S7E8 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 19h00 on 22 Feb 2024.  It was touch and go with a fiber failure an hour before the show, big well done to the guys at Vodacom Fibre for sorting it out in time.  We started with a bit of ACDC and ‘Overdose' off the Let There Be Rock album and just kept on building from there. This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about was the original version of Am I Evil by Diamond Head.  You may only know the Metallica version and they have indeed made it famous, but it all started here.  I went into the story in a bit of detail because it is one of the best examples of a win–win ever.  Everyone involved scored because of this track and it really is iconic.   The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Halestorm – American BoysHinder – Homecoming QueenHell Yeah – Hell YeahHanoi Rocks – Two Steps From the Move Artists Featured:  ACDC, Bullets & Octane, Danko Jones, Mötley Crüe, Desolation Angels, Great White, Foreigner, The Eagles, ZZ Top, Theory of a Deadman, Palaye Royale, Iron Maiden Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Dio, Dire Straits, Jethro Tull, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Yngwie Malmsteen, Burning Rain, Diamond Head, Hanoi Rocks, Hell Yeah, Hinder, Halestorm, Saxon, Sakis Tolis, The Rolling stones, Suicide Bombers, Volbeat, Neil Young, Tom Petty.   The Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to S7E7 of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  This one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 Feb 2024.  I was in Clarens with master guitarist Dan Patlansky and a whole lot of guitar maniacs so the show deals with that a bit, but for the main, it is straight down-the-line Rock and Metal, as you would expect.   This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about features the man himself, Mr Dan Patlansky with a track recorded back in 2006 on an album called Real. The track is called Bad Weather Blues and showcases just what a great player he is.  Next week I hope to play you a short interview Dan and I are planning regarding his new album Movin' On.   The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Grand Funk Railroad – We're An American BandGolden Earring – MoontanGreat White – HookedGuns ‘n' Roses – Use Your Illusion II Artists featured:  Saxon, Volbeat, Thunder, Burn the Priest, Five Finger Death Punch, KK's Priest, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, The Angels, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, Mother Love Bone, Junk Yard, Warrant, Suicide Bombers, Joel Hoekstra's 13, Motörhead, Buckcherry, ACDC, Machine Head, Burning Rain, The Winery Dogs, Green Day, Blink 182, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Dan Patlansky, Grand Funk Railroad, Golden Earring, Great White, Guns ‘n' Roses, Cadillac Sun, 12th Avenue, Seether, Rammstein, The Pretty Reckless, Arch enemy, Powder Finger.  The Story of Rock and Roll. (Los Angeles, CA) Desert Dragon is set to release their new album, This Side of Heaven on all digital and retail platforms on November 11. The band's first release with vocalist Keith St. John. Making up the rest of the band is Greg Patnode and Brent Barker on guitar, Rick Brandt on bass, Lenny Roberto on drums, and Michael Smith on keyboards. “We decided to go a little heavier on this album to get a little more energy,” says Patnode.Desert Dragon vocalist St John is well known in the rock world for his time in Montrose, Lynch Mob, and currently, Kingdom Come, Burning Rain, and the Raiding the Rock Vault production on the Las Vegas strip. St John cowrote and coproduced the This Side of Heaven album with Patnode and Smith and considers this record to be “au natural and straight from the heart.”The band has been making a name for themselves with their multi-rock sound which includes a mix of classic rock, blues rock, country rock, and progressive rock. This Side of Heaven features ten new songs that highlight a different side of the band's talents on every track, while they salute good old fashion rock. On the album violinist Adel Eskander (Page and Plant No Quarter Tour) lends his talents to the song “Southside Of Heaven”.

Episode 45 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Nov 2022.  The show kicked off with ACDC and a track off Let There Be Rock called ‘Overdose'.  From there we continued with Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, and White Zombie.  We went into the ‘00s and cranked the Nu Metal with Drowning Pool and the title track off the Sinner album, the one that gave the world 'Bodies' and 'Broken Home' off Papa Roach's Infest album.  Strangely enough, we went from that into some mellow blues, courtesy of Popa Chubby and ZZ Top with Trouble and Blue Jean Blues respectively.  It was the Papa to Popa connection that did it. From the Blues, we checked out Iron Maiden and another track off Power Slave called ‘Back In the Village'.  Herman Frank, ex of Accept got a look-in with a track off his latest album Two For a Lie.  We stayed in Germany for some Rammstein and a bit later 'Blackout' from Scorpions, another song written about Eskom.  A highlight of the show was the back-to-back pairing of Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner, two vocalists who have played in the best bands in the world and have both released solo alums in the last 12 months.  Joe Lynn Turner has Peter Tägtgren producing and doing the guitar work and it is one hell of a combination.  We had some more Nu Metal courtesy of Limp Bizkit and then used Courtney Love's band Hole,  with a track called 'Rock Star' to lead us into a quick farewell and RIP to Nazareth's Dan McCafferty who passed away this week.  As explained on the show Nazareth are a very special band to those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s and we thanked Dan for writing and performing some awesome classic songs.   We took in 'When Your Love is Gone' by Assie legend Jimmy Barnes and then spent nearly nine minutes on the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Still In Love With You'.  It came off the Live album called Life and features all the Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes.  Texas Hippie Coalition moved the show out of the ballads and Night Ranger and Queensrÿche continued the excellent medicine and took it to the next level.  The new Queensrÿche, Digital Noise Alliance' is fantastic, check it out.  This show just had too much material and not enough time.  We tipped the hat to Judas Priest for their well-deserved and long overdue inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we listened to another awesome Vivian Campbell solo and heard how powerful Andrew Freeman is on a track called ‘Year of The Gun' and we squeezed in an amazingly emotional track from My Chemical Romance called 'The World is Ugly'.  The consensus on the chat was that MCR are correct on this point.  Cheers all, see you next week, I hope you enjoy the episode.     Artists featured:  ACDC, Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, White Zombie, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Popa Chubby, ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Herman Frank, Rammstein, Anthrax, Dead City Ruins, Burning Rain, Skid Row, Five Finger Death Punch, Scorpions, Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner, Leslie West Tribute, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Nazareth, The Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Barnes, Thin Lizzy, Texas Hippie Coalition, Night Ranger, Queensrÿche, Halestorm, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, In Flames     The Story of Rock and Roll. S5E15 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 14 April 2022.  It had an unusual start which may have lost a few listeners.  Being a long weekend there was a bit of a party element in the air so we started with about 10 seconds of Pink 'Get This Party Started and then mercifully blasted into 'The Art of Partying' by Municipal Waste.  With that little joke out the way, we settled into some Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks Slash, and ACDC.  There was a nice little grunge bit where we revisited Alice in Chain's masterpiece 'Rooster'.  The story behind it is interesting and led to 'Blow UP The Outside World' by Soundgarden.  We bridged the grunge new metal vibe while keeping to the party theme with Deftones 'Knife Party.  Going from there into Tool made a huge amount of sense and it was here that the wheels came off.  Load shedding was scheduled for 20h00, for those who don't know what that it is it's a particular South African manifestation of mass corruption and incompetence.  It means we have no power for a few hours a couple of times every 24 hours.  I had turned the generator on before the power went off but switching it over in the dark took a bit longer than anticipated so there may be a slight gap between Deftones and Tool.  Do not adjust your set, it will come back.  There was another gap after Bobby Gaylor's interesting bit of satire titled' Suicide' let's pretend that was to allow you to reflect on what he sang about rather than a load-shedding induced gap between the broadcast time and the playback time.  The joys of shitty wifi I tell you.  This episode has a solidly embedded metal infrastructure built out of Kreator, Machine Head, Parkway Drive, Hypocrisy & Arch Enemy.  We checked out the new Rammstein track 'Zick Zack' a fairly terrifying look at plastic surgery and the dangers of the human ego.  A highlight for me was showcasing just how good our very own Dan Patlansky is, I played his 'Snake Oil City' back to back with Stevie Ray Vaughan's 'Couldn't Stand The Weather' and the main discernable difference is that Dan has a better guitar tone.  Yes, he is that good.  A bit of Samantha Fish got us out of the blues and into the metal as we closed with some pretty heavy stuff surrounding the aforementioned Bobby Gaylor track.  See what you think, it was technically very challenging.     Artists featured:  Municipal Waste, Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks, Burning Rain, The Gaslight Anthem, Slash, Sebastian Bach, ACDC. Kissin' Dynamite, Seether, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Deftones, Tool, Steel Panther, Scorpions, Dead-Line, No Friends of Harry, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rammstein, Kreator, Machine Head, Anti-Flag, The Jam, Chris Rea, Dan Patlansky, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Samantha Fish, System of a Down, Hypocrisy, Coheed & Cambria, Black Veil Brides, Bobby Gaylor, Arch Enemy, Parkway Drive, Warrior Soul

Episode 47 of season 4 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on Thursday 25 Nov.  We kicked off 'nicely' as requested by one of the ladies in the office.  Nicely lasted about 2 minutes and then we were off and running with Manowar.  We went onto the SA music early and took a listen to a track of Albert Frost's new release called Sacred Sound.  Johnathan Martin got a chance next with '7 Years Bad Luck'.  In between, we had a bit of Queensrÿche and Gary Moore before getting back to South Africa and two of our most iconic SA bands, Dog Detachment and Asylum Kids.  The Whatsapp line comments confirmed the wisdom of this selection. We took in a lekker little early '70s twosome with Free's track 'Remember' and Elton John with 'Razor Face' off the fantastic Madman Across the Water album.  A highlight for me was the new release from Pirates of Radio called 'Parasite'.  I reckon it's their best release so far and you should wake up with it stuck in your head.  Things took a turn for the weird with Electric Six's 'Danger, High Voltage' which was fun to hear again.   Then it was time for a bit of Metal courtesy of Iron Maiden Judas Priest and Hell Fire.   The Jesus and Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp and Earl Slick with a  superb cover of Sam Cooke's ' A Change is Gonna Come' provided a bit of respite before we built all the way back up to Warrior Soul, In Flames and the phenomenal Parkway Drive.  All in all, it was pretty, pretty, pretty good.   Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, Manowar, Ace Frehley, Boston, Triumph, Devils Train, Blackberry Smoke, W.A.S.P., Albert Frost, Johnathan Martin, Burning Rain, Gary Moore, Massive Wagons, Queensrÿche, Dog Detachment, Asylum Kids, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Free, Elton John, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, Pirates of Radio, Electric Six, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hell Fire, Metallica, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp, Springbok Nude Girls, Earl Slick, The Cult, Joan Jett, Warrior Soul, In Flames, Parkway Drive, Bob Dylan.

Hocus Pocus first premiered 28 years ago in the golden age of '90s cinema, and has since achieved cult-classic fame with both children and adults as a loyal fanbase. Fans fall in love with the delightful, demonic, and diva-esque Sanderson Sisters and the sleepy New England town they torment. Now as you plan your annual viewing of the family favorite flick, you can also conjure up your own spooky treats and bewitching drinks to celebrate Halloween. Introducing The Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook: Bewitchingly Delicious Recipes for Fans of the Halloween Classic by Bridget Thoreson [ISBN: 9781646042418; $19.95; Ulysses Press; September 2021], a marvelously spooky cookbook featuring delicious recipes based on your favorite cult classic film from 1993. Whether you're attending a surprise rave in town or just spending “a quiet evening at home,” you'll enchant anyone who tastes these frightfully appetizing recipes, including Baked Witch Casserole; Mischief Night Pasta; Bones of 100 Chickens; Mother's Scorpion Pie; Life Potion Soup; William's Wormy Bed Dirt Cake; Dead Man's Toes, Dead Man's Toes; Brown Butter Booooook Blondies; Burning Rain of Death Punch; Airhead Virgin Mocktail; and much more! “I hope you enjoy this homage to Hocus Pocus as much as you enjoy the film itself,” author Bridget Thoreson says. “While blondies are no substitute for Bette and no cocktail is quite as funny as hearing a young girl humiliate her older brother by saying ‘Yabos,' I hope you'll find the recipes and references fun, delicious, and delightfully spooky, and you'll rewatch the film again and again accompanied by the goodies in this booo-ooooo-ooook.” The Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook is the ultimate must-have for fans of all ages—but don't worry, no children were harmed in the testing of these recipes. Hard to believe we are already 4 episodes into 2021, time flies when you are having fun.  This episode aired on 28 Jan 2021 at 7 pm so that's January in its poes :-).  We kicked off with 'Ride the Monkey'by Burning Rain and followed it with Sister Sin out of Gothenburg.  That got the lesser-known stuff out and on your airwaves and then we hit the ACDC and some W.A.S.P.  It was one of those shows where I wasn't getting any flow but then record-breaking numbers started tuning in and everything fell into place.  Highlights for me included rediscovering Bon Jovi's 'Wild As The Wind' and taking a listen to Body Counts 'Institutionalised 2014', not everyone's cup of tea but the lyrics are hilarious and if you've ever lost your e-mail password you'll relate.  The back to back Pantera to Sepultura worked for me and then The Clt with Heart of soul was like soothing water.  Another highlight was Dog detachment with 'The Last Laugh' what a song, the Armstrong brothers got that one right.  We also celebrated the discovery that uber rock chick Brody Dalle is single.  Black Label Society as always, ratchets up exponentially when Zakk hits the solo, what a player.  And speaking of players, Satriani in Chickenfoot is in a class of his own.  Artists featured:  Burning Rain, Sister Sin, ACDC, W.A.S.P. We're close to the end of Season 3 now, episode 18 of 20 aired at 7 pm on 17 Dec 2020.  It was a pretty smooth sailing affair.  Listenership was lower than normal, I suspect because of the festive season.  Low listenership on the night, however, always drives the podcasts which incidentally hit 10 000 this week so thank you all.  I am most appreciative of the support that TSORR is getting and especially to those of you who download it as soon as it lands.  A reminder to you all that the TSORR Facebook page is the best way to contact the team if you have any comments, questions, suggestions, etc about the episodes. We kicked off with a few lesser-known bands, Drowning Pool, Burning Rain, The Answer, and Baton Rouge before cracking in with some Bon Scott era ACDC.  We continued in that vein with a good selection of the music you expect from the show: Tool, Kid Rock, Guns 'n' Roses, Judas Priest, Joe Bonamassa, Megadeth, and many more rock giants of our age.  I spent a bit of time on the SA stuff and specifically on friends and supporters of Rebel Rock Radio, The Burning, The Color Blew, and Deadline who were all present at the South African Metal Music Awards ceremony at the Fokof Bar on Sunday the 13th Dec.  We took a listen to all 3 and it's clear that SA metal is alive and kicking.  We also took a listen to Agro and we will play some more from all these guys on the final TSORR for 2020 on 31 Dec.  Gary Clarke Jr made a return to the show as did Biters and it was really cool to listen to Gene and Paul back to back from their solo albums.  Artists featured:  Drowning Pool, The Answer, Baton Rouge, Burning Rain, ACDC, Tool, Kid Rock, Testament, Guns 'n' Roses, Mark Haze, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clarke Jr, Megadeth, Theory of a Deadman, The Burning, Deadline, The Color Blew, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Loverboy, Mötley Crüe, Joe Jackson, The Offspring, Biters, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Oasis, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Wolfmother, Deep Purple, Foo Fighters, In Flames, Avenged Sevenfold, Agro, The Gaslight Anthem, Anti-Flag & The Uninvited

This show is more fun every week, it is quite strange how the ones where you initially feel you have all the wrong songs turn out to be listener favorites.  This episode took place at midnight on 25 October and it felt a bit different from normal, I figured out it's because there wasn't any Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow or Megadeth which is unusual.  It's being on a tightrope without a safety net.  Instead, there was some interesting newish stuff from Mustasch, Burning Rain.  Highlights in this episode for me were In This River off the Black Label Society - Unblackened album and Greta Van Fleet who have grown on me For the Punk slot, we went right back to the roots with The Sex Pistols and The Clash. It still sounded very fresh, I reckon that Steve Jones is far more influential than people realize.  Compare his guitar sound with everything else happening in 1977 and you'll see what I mean.  The local slot was filled by Cutting Jade and Dead-Line, I tend to gush about Dead-Line they are writing some good stuff and the guitar work is fantastic.  The male solo category was headed up by John Mellencamp and Jimmy Barnes and Metallica and Machinehead bought the Heavy.  I closed out with the greatest guitar solo ever committed to vinyl, I don't normally play the classics because in many instances they have been totally overdone, this one however just felt exactly right m/. Artists featured in Episode 41 include Black Sabbath, Jimmy Barnes, ACDC, Mustasch, Metallica, Cutting Jade, Halestorm, John Mellencamp, Machinehead, The Clash, Q5, Greta Van Fleet, Rival Sons, Black Label Society, Live, Pink Floyd, The Sex Pistols, Burning Rain, Rose Tattoo, Black Label Society, Danzig, Audioslave, Dead-Line, ACDC, Mötley Crüe the Coheed & Cambria.
