In this episode, I reveal the key signs it's time to hire your first team member and how to make this transition successfully. Learn how to identify what tasks to delegate, who to hire first, and why having systems in place before bringing someone on is absolutely critical for success. This episode is perfect for designers who are feeling overwhelmed and considering growing their team.Hope you enjoy the episodeBeth xxHow to Know When You're ReadyHiring your first team member is a huge milestone, but it can also bring up a lot of fear. Here are the tell-tale signs you're truly ready to make this move:• You're constantly booked out and turning away work• You're spending too much time on admin and logistics rather than design• Your service quality is slipping because you're spread too thin• You can financially sustain an extra set of handsHiring isn't just about getting help. It's about building capacity in your business. The right hire allows you to stay focused on what only you can do—the design thinking, the vision, the client relationships—while someone else supports the execution.Mapping Your TasksBefore writing that job description, I recommend mapping out the tasks you do weekly:• Highlight the ones only you can do• Circle the ones someone else could do with trainingThis exercise becomes the foundation of your first job description and helps clarify exactly what kind of support you need.Who Should Your First Hire Be?There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but most designers fall into one of these three paths:Studio Coordinator/Admin Assistant: Someone to handle inboxes, supplier quotes, follow-ups, and schedules. This hire often gives you the biggest time win right away.Junior Designer/Design Assistant: Ideal if you need help with sourcing, documentation, or CAD work. Great if you're creatively stretched but still managing admin on your own.Bookkeeper/Virtual Assistant: Sometimes you don't need someone full-time or in-person. Starting with part-time support can ease your workload while reducing risk.Think about where your time is most drained and what tasks you procrastinate about the most. That clarity will show you where your first hire should be.The Hiring ProcessTo make hiring smoother, follow these steps:• Write a clear job description that outlines what success looks like• Create a simple application process (CV and short video introduction)• Interview for values, not just skills—the "vibe" needs to be right• Set clear expectations from day one with a basic onboarding checklistThe vibe of the person needs to be right, especially if they're the first person you're bringing into your business. The Systems ImperativeThis might be the most important point of all: Do not take on someone until you have good systems and processes in place.Without clear systems:• You'll spend all your time answering questions• Your new hire will feel lost and frustrated• You'll wonder why you bothered hiring at allIf you don't have systems and processes in place, you are setting yourself up to fail and you're setting up this new person to fail. The Leadership Mindset ShiftHiring is more than a process—it's a mindset shift from doing everything yourself to being a leader. That means:• Setting boundaries• Creating systems• Sometimes letting someone else make mistakes so they can learnYour job is to grow the business, not just run it.This episode is essential for interior designers approaching that growth threshold where doing everything yourself is no longer sustainable. Whether you're ready to hire now or planning for the future, these insights will help you make this transition successfully. Want to work together? In this episode, I tackle one of the biggest decisions you'll face as your design business grows: when to move out of your home office and into a dedicated studio space. Learn the key signals that it's time to make the move, how to budget for this significant investment, and why a studio space can transform both client perception and team dynamics.Hope you enjoy the episodeBeth xxEpisode NotesThe Home Office Reality CheckWorking from home has its perks—comfy clothes, coffee on hand, and efficiency. But there comes a point where your dining table setup or spare bedroom studio no longer supports the business you're building.Let's be honest, working from home has its perks. You're in comfy clothes, coffee is always on hand, and it can feel incredibly efficient. Until it isn't.Signs you might be outgrowing your home office include:• Constantly rearranging or working around home life• Hesitating to host client meetings in your space• Needing to hire team members with nowhere to put them• Wanting to create a more professional brand experienceThe Emotional ShiftMoving to a studio space isn't just a logistical decision—it's an identity shift. You're not just moving locations, you're stepping into a new identity as a business owner. One who is investing in space, presence and scale. This transition brings up big questions around confidence, money, team structure, and what kind of studio you're creating. The Financial ConsiderationsStudio space isn't cheap, and it's not just rent you need to consider:• Internet and utilities• Furniture and fit-out costs• Insurance and security• Cleaning and maintenanceI recommend looking at this decision through the lens of revenue per square meter: What will this space help you generate? Could it allow you to bring on another team member, raise your fees, or streamline your workflow so you take on more projects with less stress? Also consider the tax implications—office expenses are deductible, and separating your business from personal life can help with tax clarity. The Perception FactorA studio space tells clients, suppliers, and collaborators that you're established, trustworthy, and in it for the long game.It becomes part of your brand story. Clients are walking into your curated environment. They're experiencing your process before you even open your mouth and that elevates everything—your confidence, your pricing, and your position in the market.Team Dynamics and Studio CultureIf you're planning to grow your team, having a studio can be a game-changer:• Creates clear boundaries between work and home• Allows for real-time collaboration• Builds a studio culture where people feel aligned with your values• Attracts talent who want to be part of something biggerPerhaps most importantly, it creates a studio culture. One where people feel proud to come in, aligned with your values, and invested in the long-term success of your business.Practical Tips for Making the LeapReady to consider a studio space? Here's some practical tips:• Start small—you don't need a huge space in the trendiest suburb• Think about client flow from parking to signage to meeting space• Do a cost-benefit review with your accountant• Get support from designers who've made this transition beforeA small, well-located, beautifully styled space can be incredibly impactful. This episode is essential for interior designers who are feeling the limitations of their home office and considering the next step in their business growth. Whether you're ready to make the move now or planning for the future, these insights will help you make a confident, informed decision. Want to work together? Shane waxes eloquent (ok, he might rant mildly) on several aspects of the mainstream comic book industry including the direct market business model, variant covers, multiple characters with the same name, and constant status quo changes (plus the overuse of the word “iconic” these days, which isn't comics-related but Shane kvetches about it anyway). A mini-review and comparison of DC's Absolute Universe and Marvel's Ultimate Universe (which one does Shane like best). Doctor Who has been back on the air for 20 years! A sincere shout-out to Toby Hadoke. An ailing Doctor Who super fan, lost episodes of Who, and the use of AI. D&D 2024: is it a new edition or not? (and no one seems to really be talking about D&D 2024 to be honest). The tariff war's effect on game publishers and vague predictions and hopes for the future. I've noticed a concerning shift in how organizations are handling their design budgets lately. You're probably seeing it too - companies are tightening their belts, and unfortunately, senior design leaders are often the first casualties of these cuts. It's understandable from a pure numbers perspective as they are the most expensive resource. But losing these leaders creates a significant void in strategic design oversight and user advocacy that's hard to fill.Worse still, some organizations are removing their internal design capabilities entirely and instead relying on agencies. Although an agency can do an excellent job, they will not provide the design leadership and direction that organizations require. The Impact of Losing Design LeadershipLet me tell you what happens when design leadership disappears from an organization. The strategic vision that once guided product development starts to fade. You see it happening - teams that previously shaped innovative solutions now find themselves simply implementing other people's ideas. The disconnect between user needs and business decisions grows wider by the day.You might recognize this pattern in your own organization. Junior designers become trapped in execution-only roles, missing out on growth opportunities. Their valuable insights get buried under stakeholder demands. Before you know it, your design practice loses its strategic edge and struggles to deliver the value you know it can bring. If you are a design leader or have ambitions to become one, you might want to consider attending my Design Leadership Workshop this coming February. And don't forget I also have a workshop on website conversion optimization in January. Introducing a Solution: The Fractional Design LeadLet me share an alternative approach that's gaining traction: the fractional design lead. Think of it as having an experienced design leader working with you for just a day or two each week. This setup works when you can't justify a full-time senior position but still need that strategic guidance. The value of this arrangement lies in its flexibility. You get someone who can steer your design efforts in the right direction, keeping everything focused on your users while aligning with your business goals. It's a smart way to maintain high-level design leadership without breaking the bank. What makes me think this approach has potential is how it supports your existing team. Junior designers get the mentorship they need to grow, while having someone in their corner who understands design thinking. This protection from well-meaning but misguided stakeholder requests ensures your team can focus on creating truly user-centered solutions.Don't misunderstand me, this is not a replacement for a full-time design lead. It saddens me that we're seeing the cuts we are in the design sector at the moment. However, we're not going to change that reality by moaning. A fractional design lead offers the best solution in a bad situation.Benefits of a Fractional Design LeadNow, let's explore what makes a fractional design lead valuable. Having worked with organizations who have adopted this model, I've seen firsthand how it can deliver significant benefits while addressing the challenges of our current economic climate. Here are the key advantages I've observed:Save Money: You get access to seasoned leadership at a fraction of the cost of a full-time position. Perfect for keeping design standards high while managing those tight budgets we're all dealing with.Start Quickly: Tired of those endless recruitment cycles? You won't need to wade through countless CVs or sit through interview after interview. A fractional design lead can hit the ground running within days.Keep Design at the Top Table: Your users' needs stay front and center in decision-making. Having a design voice at a strategic level ensures products and services actually solve real problems.Scale With Your Needs: The role grows or shrinks alongside your organization. When times are busy, increase the hours. When things slow down, scale back. Simple.Grow Your Team: Your junior designers won't feel lost or unsupported. They'll have someone to learn from, bounce ideas off, and help them develop. The result? Better design work across the board. Is a Fractional Design Lead Right for You?If your organization is struggling to maintain a strategic design vision, or if your junior designers are lacking the guidance they need, it might be time to consider a fractional design lead. Here are a few questions to reflect on:Are you struggling to keep a cohesive and strategic vision for your design work?Do your designers need mentorship and a champion who can advocate for them?Has design been undervalued at a leadership level since the economic downturn? If any of these questions resonate, it might be worth exploring whether a fractional design lead could provide the support your team needs.Navigating Challenging TimesSure, times might be tough right now, but your design standards don't need to suffer. I've seen how a fractional design lead can make a real difference, giving you that strategic direction while staying within budget constraints. You can still deliver exceptional work, mentor your team, and keep users at the heart of everything you do.I'm Happy to Discuss This With YouIf you find yourself wishing that your organization had stronger design leadership but are unsure how to make it happen, please drop me an email. I am happy to discuss how we can build the business case and see if we can get you the support you need.

Richard is back to host this week's aBlogtoWatch Weekly show — sadly, he needs a vacation from his vacation — and the team starts right off on its usual quirky path by asking ChatGPT the price of a rhino. What does this have to do with watches? It all comes back to Hublot. (You'll have to listen to decode all this.) Then Rick chastises Ariel and Ripley for talking about too many watches last week. Once that post-mort is done, the guys spend some time talking about Ariel's recent column, whose thesis is that watch consumers don't really care who invented things. An interesting convo ensues. Back on the subject of watch books, which took up a good bit of air time last week, the team discusses the new Rolex Submariner book. Then it's on to some chitchat about watches from Casio, Sinn, and Hublot, followed by the moment we all wait for every week.... Guess the Price of the Seiko! The best operating models for design orgs are mission-driven, evolving, and team-developed. Those criteria might seem daunting, but Daniel Orbach, Lou's guest and a speaker at September's DesignOps Summit, explains how he facilitates a dynamic culture of co-creating with his team at JP Morgan Chase. Daniel outlines his framework, one where the whole team is involved. It's a dynamic, fluid process that builds teamwork, creates buy-in, and establishes a framework of periodic review, which encourages continual evolution. Lou and Daniel discuss the impact of rituals and mission statements on both teams and individuals. Not since the 2013 release of Black Flag's 'What The...' has semi-prominent album release featured cover art nearly as diabolical as Sebastian Bach's forthcoming 'Child Within The Man', though spare a thought for the original designer who misheard his instructions and delivered a sleeve bearing the title, 'Man Within The Child', which for obvious reasons would not fly. Nearly 5000 recycled jackets later, here we are with a printed cover which is deeply confusing (as opposed to highly offensive). Analysis of the aesthetic atrocity in question takes up much of this week's program, though you'll be pleased or relieved to know none of the music is featured. Not for the usual rights clearance issues, mind you, I misplaced the album on the "Bach" shelf and now i can't find it anywhere.

Komplett in Deutsch? Kevin Tufts is the real deal when it comes to tech and design. With over two decades of experience working across a number of companies in the Bay Area — Lyft, SendGrid, and Twilio, to name a few — he's now a product designer at Meta working on their Creation team. So believe me, we had a LOT to talk about. Our conversation begin with a look at the current climate inside Meta (pre-Threads, FYI), and he gave some thoughts on where the company is going as it approaches its 20th anniversary. From there, Kevin talked about his path to becoming a product designer, and we took a trip down memory lane recalling the early days of web design and what it was like working during such rapidly changing times. He also spoke on what he loves about product design now, and how he wants to help the next generation of designers through mentorship.Kevin's secrets to success are simple: seize opportunities for growth where you can, embrace collaboration, and remain flexible. Now that's something I think we could all take to heart!LinksKevin Tufts' WebsiteKevin Tufts on LinkedInFor a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Donate to Revision PathFor 10 years, Revision Path has been dedicated to showcasing Black designers and creatives from all over the world.
