This episode, I speak with Scott Sonenshein, the Henry Gardiner Symonds Professor of Management in the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University.  In our conversation, we talk about a recent paper he published in AMJ, with co-author, Kristen Nault, about organizational resilience.  The paper explores the different ways that firms approach adversity and how these approaches can lead to distinctly different outcomes.  We also discuss how resilience is best thought of as a verb and not a noun, and how leaders can prepare their organizations for adversity.   Sonenshein, S. & Nault, K. Admissions Straight Talk
Can the Consortium Help You Get Accepted and Fund Your MBA?

Admissions Straight Talk

Our consultants receive a lot of questions from clients about applying to MBA programs through The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management. I've heard myths that suggest that applying to one (or more) of the 22 Consortium schools through The Consortium's application is disadvantageous. But as the former director at two Consortium schools, I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth — provided you meet The Consortium's minimum qualifications. Though the requirements, participating schools, and corporate partners have changed over The Consortium's 57-year history, not only is the organization the best deal in town but it also gives its members an alumni network that extends throughout the 22 member schools. The Consortium history and mission Initially, The Consortium provided opportunities for young African-American men to have a fair chance at rising up the corporate ladder via the MBA. Later, The Consortium added Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and women to its mix. Membership came along with the fellowship. However, after the Supreme Court decided the Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger cases, The Consortium opened its doors to offer membership to selected applicants that further The Consortium's mission to promote the “inclusion in global business education and leadership . . . of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans.” Members do not need to belong to one of these groups but must demonstrate the mission through community and professional action and impact. Thus, membership is no longer race based but rather mission driven. Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to succeed in a Consortium member school's MBA program. Consortium member benefits Like the undergraduate Common App, candidates can apply to up to six schools with only one application for a fraction of the cost that the candidate would incur by applying to each school separately. The Consortium membership grants the candidate access to the orientation and corporate partners. Many members receive internship offers before the start of school. To summarize the benefits: Applicants can use a single application for up to six schools at one low cost. Members gain access to a vast alumni network of 22 schools, including mentorship from among the approximately 9,000 Consortium alumni (formal or informal). Students gain access to corporate sponsors at orientation if selected as a member. If selected as a fellow, students receive full tuition and a stipend. Cendie Stanford is a “Triple Eagle” scholar, becoming a first-generation college graduate to earn two Master's Degrees, one BA Degree, and a business certificate from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. A Texas native & former public school educator, she is extremely passionate about Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) education and trauma awareness. Cendie's Stanford has lived experiences with childhood adversities, most of which were experienced in zip code 79403. Unaware that her childhood adversities played a role in how she responded to stressors in her career as an educator, relationships, and even parenting, she sought the why. With two decades of experience working in the public education sector, Cendie traded in her classroom keys to secure a business license to spread the message of ACEs in corners of the world that needed to hear it most. Living with the consequences of childhood wounds for over four decades, Cendie took a leap of faith to start ACEs Matter as a not-for-profit organization because she believed everyone deserved access to this science. Cendie says, “Seeing adults who are struggling due to the templates from their childhood and seeing children being reared in similar environments motivate her to work harder at this vision for ACEs Matter.” Since 2021, Cendie has made several public appearances discussing the impacts of ACEs as a lived experience survivor in underserved and professional communities. Her long-term goals include empowering Title 1 schools and communities with research-backed practices that aid in nurturing the neurons of students, parents, and educators affected by adverse childhood experiences. Cendie serves as a mentor for youth and rising education entrepreneurs. She has also conducted over 10,000 hours of professional development training and over 150 hours of online interviews.

Robyn O'Brien never called herself a foodie. That's until her son had an allergic reaction one morning, and it sent her down a rabbit hole of uncovering what goes into the food we get off the shelves. With a 20-year career in food and finance, Robyn has been called “The Erin Brockovich of Food” by the New York Times and Bloomberg. She is recognized as one of the most visionary voices in the food industry. She's the co-founder and managing director of rePlant Capital, a financial services firm scaling climate solutions and transitioning farmland to regenerative and organic agriculture by focusing on soil health and farmer profitability. Robyn is also an adjunct professor of strategic management at Rice Business.Robyn sits down with Christine to talk about her relationship with the real Erin Brockovich, the loneliness of this kind of pioneering work, marrying intuition and analytics, and the importance of women mentoring women. Episode Quotes:How to keep doing work in this field when everything seems so dire06:46 - We have inherited an absolute truckload of a mess. I mean, it is just catastrophic when you start to look at some of these systems and the crises that we're confronting, whether it's agricultural environment, water, you know, these fires, these floods, I mean, what's happening in South Africa right now. It's catastrophic but at the same time, the scope of opportunities in front of us to be part of that solution, to create a solution, to innovate, to drive change, is also enormous. So that's where I tend to put my energy.Intuition & analysis09:55 - Intuition is something that I think is such an important skill that is not recognized enough for the value that it brings. Can it be everything? No, you need to do the analysis too. So I try as much as possible to be unbiased in my own approach. I try as much as possible to play the devil's advocate on whatever assumption I take, because I've had to stand on that frontline.Women mentoring women16:04 - I do a lot of mentoring of younger women because I did not have a female mentor.  I now have women that I work with who are like sisters. There's a real sisterhood in the fortitude that's required of women stepping into some of these industries and some of these businesses. I think a lot of reasons women have imposter syndrome is because these systems were not created for us. They were not designed for our leadership. They were not designed for our roles as mothers. And so of course there's imposter syndrome, because guess what, you weren't actually the person they had in mind when they were creating, C-suite executives and the board of directors.Show Links:Guest Profile: Faculty Profile at Jones Graduate School of Business Robyn O'Brien Website Robyn O' Brien on LinkedIn Robyn O'Brien on Twitter Robyn O'Brien on Instagram rePlant Capital Website

However, the opposite is true. If you give more, you'll get more. Not every person wants to dedicate their whole life to one company. People have dreams, aspirations, and goals of their own. When you start making people feel that you genuinely care about them, they'll start trusting you more. You have to communicate to your team that embodying the culture and values of the organization is the most important thing. Be serious about culture, and hold people to your expectations. It's better to be prepared yet humble enough to know that there is a lot that you don't know. When experimenting, try the small and fast ideas that have any potential rather than big ideas that would take a lot of time to execute. "It's better to give as much as you can away because you'll actually get people more loyal, more satisfied, and that goes with not just your customers - it's especially true with your employees." —  Jay Steinfeld See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Jay Steinfeld:  Website: https://www.jaysteinfeld.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BlindscomCEOLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaysteinfeld/  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Join me today as I speak with the amazing, Dr. Christie Cornelius about neurodiversity, retirement, corporate house call practices, and more!  Christie was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where she graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology from Loras College in 1997.  Wanting to develop her career in a warmer climate near big cities, she moved to Texas and began a Master's Program in Zoology while engaging in research for the National Fisheries and Wildlife Department.  While in this program, she applied and was accepted to Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2004.  She moved to Houston, TX to start her career as a small animal GP, eventually moving into emergency medicine, where she developed her passion for assisting families with decision-making and euthanasia.  In 2012, she created Last Wishes, a mobile euthanasia, and pet hospice service in Houston, eventually re-branding to Senior Paws and expanding it into an interdisciplinary team of 25 pet hospice professionals.  In 2015, she started The Last Wishes Fund, a non-profit 501c3 organization to help struggling families afford end-of-life services in the Greater Houston area.  In 2017, Christie opened the first pet hospice center in Texas, and added pet aquamation services, offering a robust A to Z end-of-life operation to her community.  In 2021, she sold both services to BluePearl Veterinary Specialists and stayed on as a Medical Director to help develop a global Pet Hospice initiative.  Wanting to develop her business and leadership skills to a higher level to open herself up for more opportunities outside of a corporate structure, she recently decided to leave BluePearl to pursue an Executive MBA Degree from Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business to help other independent veterinarians improve the success of their mobile practices despite the rise in corporate consolidation in the end-of-life space. Simply put, NRG helps industries of all kinds in the U.S. and Canada reach their energy goals.  NRG offers a simplified approach to renewable energy, helping its customers gain budget security through fixed-price contracts. NRG also helps them achieve energy flexibility — an important price strategy goal —  with distributed energy and demand response. Rob's team provides market expertise to help businesses manage their energy strategy, helping customers reach their sustainability goals and navigate the challenge of the ever-evolving energy industry. Managing data Many of NRG's customers are evolving from smart energy managers to smart data managers. More customers want real-time access to their information, using this knowledge to better understand their energy usage in the context of other marketplace data and trends around them.NRG's operating platform is the central nervous system that collects that data and powers the analytics that help support the customers, making them more effective in their operations across the spectrum of NRG. Through their operating system, NRG can track trends from the individual business level up to an extensive network level. For example, they can view one customer's usage in terms of how they are being affected, as well as their effect on a region or specific industry. NRG uses this information to make decisions that benefit its customers and deliver insights that help them make informed decisions in the future. Customer Choice Two significant societal drivers are pushing the evolution of customer choice. The first is digital. People are now used to a digital-enabled lifestyle that never could have been imagined possible years ago. Technology has helped customers become more knowledgeable about their energy usage and options. The engaged energy customer wants to be a partner who's constantly thinking about and tailoring their energy experience, so these partners need to accelerate their efforts to provide those types of technological solutions. The second trend is the overarching need to decarbonize energy use. Both society and industry have a role in decarbonizing to address climate change. Energy is a massive component of decarbonization inside the economy. Renewable energy is the most visible way to decarbonize and has become more affordable and accessible than ever before. Prices are expected to continue to decrease and customer choice to continue to grow.  Resources & People Mentioned Energy Advisory Services NRG Products and Services Rob's Blog on Looking Ahead Connect with Rob Gaudette On LinkedIn Robert Gaudette is Senior Vice President of NRG Business, where he manages the largest B2B retail gas and power platform and the top three largest provider of demand response in North America – overseeing market leading products and services, including renewable energy acquisition strategy and private load management programs. Jay was an early adopter of this thing called “the internet” and transformed his small retail business into the world’s #1 online blinds retailer as well as the leading e-tailer of hard-to-buy custom categories of home goods. Jay intentionally designed a successful exit to Home Depot that included him staying on to run Blinds.com for an additional six years after acquisition. When you hear the words “company culture,” what comes to mind? Workplace culture is a hot issue these days, especially as it relates to jobs and the so-called “Great Resignation.” What do employees really want: freedom, tangible perks, a more inviting company culture? CEO and Entrepreneur Jay Steinfeld shares his story of success and expertise when it comes to corporate culture.  “If you want to do things of consequence, if you want to build consequential things, I think you must first help people become consequential.” - Jay Steinfeld, on improving company culture. On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Jay Steinfeld to chat about corporate culture and the impact it can have on a company's workforce. Jay was the founder and CEO of Global Custom Commerce, which operates the world's number one online window covering retailer, blinds.com. Jay bootstrapped the company in 1996 from his garage with just $3,000; Global Custom Commerce was acquired by The Home Depot in 2014. Jay remained the company's CEO, and later joined The Home Depot's Online Leadership Team.  After stepping away from these roles in early 2020, Jay has increased his involvement in numerous private company boards and serves as a Director of the public company, Masonite. He also teaches Entrepreneurship at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business, and supports numerous charities. Jay is an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and has earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Houston Technology Center.     Listen to Kelly and Jay talk about company culture and the Great Resignation:How did Jay start his business, how did it grow, and how did he make a name for himself in the booming world of tech and entrepreneurship? Jay says he frequently tells entrepreneurs to “experiment without fear of failure.” Experimentation is necessary and key to evolving and growing any venture. When he began his company in the 90's, it was before even Amazon was born. He built his business one step at a time, and gave himself permission to fail. The idea of failure can be terrifying for small businesses because of the heavy stakes on the line. How does Jay advise small or startup businesses to experiment and take risks with confidence? What does Jay wish he'd known before he started his business in the 90's?  How did Jay approach hiring decisions while growing his business? How can business owners know when to expand hiring, even when finances are tight?  Did dynamics change when Jay sold his business to Home Depot? Jay shares how the transition went: the CFO said they'd expected him to get tired of them and quit after 90 days, but Jay stayed on for 7 years after the acquisition.   Jay explains the idea of business “love languages” and how to find harmony with team members of different strengths, disciplines, and personalities.  When Jay's company reached significant milestones over the years, how did they impact the company (and the way Jay ran the company)? Jay details his definition of success and the way it informs his strategic choices in both workplace culture and business operations.  Kelly asks Jay to describe the moments when he “felt” successful along the journey of growing his business. He shares he felt many of those moments over the years, though sometimes the impact of his success came to him retroactively.  As the head of a growing business, Jay says he often felt he was seen as intimidating or scary, which greatly bothered him because he genuinely wanted everyone's voice and feedback.  How does Jay feel employee's thoughts on their superiors plays into today's Great Resignation? What advice does he have for companies to make their management teams more approachable and receptive? Jay says what people want most is autonomy. Why not give more generosity to employees? More traction, more upward mobility? More transparent conversations?

Welcome to the Employer Blueprint Podcast, and this week we are excited to present the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hooray Health, Shane Foss. When beginning his career, Shane spent four years in the military as a Scrub Tech, assisting surgeons, and this is where he found a passion for health care. After leaving the military, Shane went to work for Johnson and Johnson selling orthopedic implants and moved to Stryker Orthopedics after that. According to Shane, this is where his career really took off. At Stryker, Shane really enjoyed the team building and development experiences. While at Stryker, Shane also pursued higher education by attending and graduating from Rice University - Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management and as he mentions in the podcast, this gave him the entrepreneurial bug. After Stryker, Shane worked for Avalign Technologies, Inc. before buying a business called Zimmer Alliance, a distributor for Zimmer Orthopedic.  It was around this time that Shane had an issue with his back and had to go to a local Urgent Care facility. During that time his deductible hadn’t been met on his health insurance and after what he assumed would be a small fee, instead became a bill for more than $800. This shocked Shane, especially because he knew the facility was within his network. Shane called and negotiated the bill down to a comfortable amount, however he couldn’t help but wonder how many people would have just paid the bill. After some research Shane determined that it was more than 52% of Americans who would have just paid the amount, 8% would have negotiated another amount, and 40% would have let the amount go to collections. This research led Shane to start Hooray Health, which provides affordable alternatives to traditional health care plans, and helps to empower their customers to protect themselves against large balanced unexpected bills.  Enjoy this episode of The Employer Blueprint Podcast as Kyle and Shane dive into the many topics around Healthcare, Affordable Care Act, and the Healthcare industry.
