Guest Profiles: Brett Seals is an expert in instant response and threat detection engineering, currently working at the firm 1898. Before joining 1898, Brett garnered a decade of invaluable experience in the United States Navy, where he supported both expeditionary and cybersecurity operations. During his Navy tenure, he served at the Navy Cyber Defensive Operation Command, the Navy's equivalent of a Security Operations Center (SOC), managing a fleet of sensors. Brett also spent considerable time around the Fort Meade area. As the COVID-19 pandemic began, he transitioned from his military role to his current position, continuing his commitment to cybersecurity in the private sector. Gabriel Sanchez embarked on his professional journey in the early 2000s, transitioning from college into what we now recognize as a burgeoning career in cybersecurity. Initially, Gabriel found himself working as a contractor for the Department of Defense, focused on missile simulations and charged with the responsibility of protecting their network—an early, hands-on introduction to cybersecurity before it even had a formal name. Following this formative experience, Gabriel spent the next decade in the electric utility sector, stepping into a groundbreaking role to establish an entirely new cybersecurity program from scratch. His trailblazing efforts in this novel position underscored his capability and foresight in an evolving digital landscape. Pascal Ackermann is a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience in controls engineering and operational technology (OT), having entered the field in 1999. Throughout his career, he has focused on building resilient and secure OT networks. For the past year, Ackermann has specialized in helping customers make sense of security events within their environments. He assists clients in discovering and interpreting security incidents, providing insights into their relevance and impact. Additionally, Ackermann and his team are equipped to respond to security breaches, offering on-site services to recover, remediate, and ensure systems are back up and running efficiently. His deep expertise makes him a trusted resource in cybersecurity for OT environments. Landon Gnade was reunited with his puppy, Lepo, thanks to the nonprofit Paws of War, after serving in Kosovo. Gnade met Lepo, originally named Onyx, during his deployment, and they quickly bonded. Paws of War, which helps veterans by reuniting them with animals they bonded with during service, facilitated Lepo's journey to the U.S. Despite challenges in transporting animals, the nonprofit successfully brought Lepo to Georgia, where he will live on Gnade's farm. Paws of War will cover Lepo's medical and insurance costs for life, supporting both the soldier and his pet. STORY 2: Cobb Approves Indoor Soccer Facility in Mableton The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal for an indoor soccer facility on Lions Club Drive, requested by Trejo Soccer Academy. The facility, a 24,028-square-foot warehouse, will be rezoned for commercial indoor recreation, allowing the academy to expand with two indoor fields for youth and adult training. Initially met with opposition over parking and rezoning concerns, the proposal was approved with stipulations, including occupancy limits and a 40-foot buffer. The facility must be completed within 180 days, and the property cleaned up. The building, originally a roller rink, will be repurposed for soccer training. STORY 3: 40-Home West Cobb Subdivision Approved The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a subdivision on Midway Road, proposed by Poston Properties, with a 5-0 vote. The development will feature 40 traditional and craftsman-style homes, reduced from an initial 47, with sizes ranging from 2,200 to 2,800 square feet. The 48.67-acre property will include 20.93 acres of protected open space, walking trails, and park areas. A homeowners association will maintain common areas. A 100-foot buffer will separate the subdivision from neighbors, and development hours are restricted. The project aims to offer diverse housing sizes, addressing some affordable housing concerns. Kay Kirkpatrick and Rep. Sharon Cooper, are defending the polio vaccine amid efforts to undermine its credibility. Kirkpatrick, a physician, emphasized the vaccine's role in preventing polio globally, while Cooper, a nurse, criticized misinformation and stressed the importance of childhood vaccinations. Both highlighted the resurgence of polio cases and the need for proven vaccines. Meanwhile, Cobb County Commissioner Jerica Richardson was recognized for her service, despite uncertainties about her political future due to districting issues. The Cobb County Democratic Party announced its new leadership team, focusing on maintaining their influence in the area. STORY 5: No. 9: Cobb Sees Primary Upsets, Presidential Visits In 2024, Cobb County saw significant political shifts and high-profile election events. Sonya Allen, a former deputy district attorney, unseated incumbent DA Flynn Broady in the Democratic primary, securing her position without Republican opposition. In Georgia House District 42, socialist Gabriel Sanchez defeated incumbent Teri Anulewicz, later winning the general election. Cobb was a battleground for the presidential race, hosting multiple visits from President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite Cobb's Democratic lean, Trump won Georgia with 51% of the vote, highlighting the state's swing status. On this week's second serving of Political Breakfast, host Lisa Rayam, Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson and Republican strategist Brian Robinson discuss a surprise upset in the Georgia primary. In Cobb County, 27-year-old Gabriel Sanchez defeated the ncumbent State Rep. Teri Anulewicz.Sanchez now faces Republican Diane Jackson in this fall's general election. The gang poses the question: IF elected to the Georgia House, will Sanchez be able to govern alongside moderate Democrats and make friends across the aisle? Now that we're (hopefully) in the final hours of "Aquapocalypse" (or are we going with "Watergeddeon?"), city council had the chance yesterday to grill its watershed commissioner, Al Wiggins, Jr., yesterday, and for the most part, the engagement was polite - with a lot of deserved commendation for the department's employees' putting in the work. That said, communications was the key gripe, and it extends to the mayor, per Bill Torpy at the AJC. Local media finally picked up on Mayor Dickens' Memphis trip in the throes of the water crisis after George Chidi and I discussed it on this show (maybe local journos are paying attention to me?) I got to catch up with Democratic Socialist - and Democratic nominee for Georgia's House district #42 - Gabriel Sanchez today for an extended Q&A as well. He upset Rep. Teri Anulwicz in the party's primary last month, so now that he's in "general election" mode, learn with me what events shaped this "under-30" candidate ideology and platform.
Count me among those who have doubts Georgia's Tuesday primary results are much of a "bellwether" for expectations in November. For the most part, incumbents prevailed, save for a couple here or there who fell to primary opponents. One, in particular, Rep. Teri Anulewicz, lost to a Democratic Socialist millennial named Gabriel Sanchez. Hear some of his lingo and you may come away thinking "wow; a liberal who's talking about issues the average American is dealing with? How refreshing." I sure did. Samuel Alito has more flags than the theme park in South Cobb, apparently, and it has folks wondering why he isn't recusing himself from any Trump-related matters. Me, too.
State Supreme Court Justice Andrew Pinson beat back an aggressive challenge to his seat on the bench by John Barrow, who ran on a pledge to restore abortion rights in Georgia. Pinson won the race by 10 points. What do the results say about abortion as an issue for the state's voters? How much did incumbency play into Pinson's victory? In a conversation with Tia, Greg, and Bill, Pinson said, “Georgia is not ready to have and does not want a politicized judiciary like we've seen in a lot of these other states.” Then, the two big names in the Donald Trump election conspiracy case – Fani Willis and Judge Scott McAfee – cruised to easy victories. Plus, Veteran legislator Teri Anulewicz loses in the biggest upset of the day to challenger Gabriel Sanchez in his first race for public office. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Max Felker-Kantor, associate professor of history at Ball State University, to discuss his recent book DARE to Say No: Policing and the War on Drugs in Schools. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent gender identity review by the National Health Services (NHS) in the United Kingdom. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's ongoing assault on Rafah, ongoing institutional support for Israel's genocide among the US government and major corporations, US sanctions against Iran, the White House's climate stance, Boeing hearings, Disneyland unionization, Biden's polling numbers, Mike Johnson's failing speakership, and the Senate's rejection of the Mayorkas impeachment sham, before parsing a little deeper through the recent report on the horrendous abuse and torture of Palestinian hostages in Israel and the ongoing showdown between Columbia University's anti-zionist student body, and hyper-zionist institutional leadership. Professor Max Felker-Kantor then joins, diving right into the evolution of DARE's prevalence in US schools and society, and how it got its start with the LAPD. First, Professor Felker-Kantor walks Emma through the precursor to DARE, with LA Chief of Police Darrel Gates' strategy throughout the 1970s to send undercover officers into schools to bust drug dealers – a project that had been failing as the War on Drugs kicked into full swing by the end of the decade – and his subsequent attempt to shift from cracking down on the supply end of the War on Drugs, to cracking down on the demand. Expanding on this, Felker-Kantor explores the creation of DARE as a joint venture between the LAPD and local schools, with officers essentially becoming ingrained the education environment and classrooms, even going as far as to pitch themselves as friends and mentors to the students, and quickly taking off across the US over the 1980s, before walking through the slow collapse of the program as more and more evidence came out about the strategy's failure in preventing drug addiction or exposure. Wrapping up, Max walks Emma through the extensive funding network of the DARE program, beginning with internal LAPD funding before quickly expanding to state and federal grants over the 1980s and start of the ‘90s, and why its particular ability to cling to its non-profit status has allowed it to remain, in some capacity, as a global organization today. Erin Reed and Emma then jump right into the background for the UK's recent Cass Report on transgender care, stepping back to briefly cover the rise of transphobic activism in the UK at the end of the 2010s, and the major policy impacts it had despite fringe following, including the NHS-sponsored ‘independent' and ‘unbiased' review by Hillary Cass. After giving some background on the evidently not-so-unbiased Cass herself, Reed parses through the clear failure of the report itself to live up to these supposed standards, actively excluding both trans voices and experts on trans care from the report, relying on outdated and fraudulent statistics (compiled by notorious homophobes nonetheless), and repeatedly requiring absurdly high standards for trans care – standards not met by the vast majority of both adult and pediatric care – while rarely substantiating any of the claims about the supposed dangers. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Colin from Missouri about sports team owners extorting taxpayers, address the absurdity of “woke” segregation, and watch Professor Ruha Benjamin absolutely nail her acceptance speech for a Spelman College honorary degree by calling out institutional support for genocide and white supremacy. They also dive into the ongoing suppression of student activist voices on college campuses right now, with a particular focus on Columbia University's ongoing campus activism and the administrative backlash, before talking with Genevieve from Tucson about Operation Olive Branch's work helping Palestinians in Gaza. After touching on the mass manufacturing errors facing Tesla's Cybertrucks, they talk with Erin from Atlanta about Cobb County State candidate Gabriel Sanchez, and watch Matt Walsh pretend like nobody cares about women's sports, after months of obsessing about women's sports, plus, your calls and IMs! The crash involved at least five vehicles, with Slaymaker's 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan colliding with a 2012 Honda Civic driven by Anthony Taylor. After the collision, Slaymaker exited his vehicle to check on Taylor and was struck by a 2022 Kia K5 driven by Tekila Glass. A 2017 Toyota Highlander driven by Joseph McWilliams then collided with the rear of the Volkswagen. Taylor sustained serious injuries, while Joseph and Tina McWilliams had minor injuries. The crash is under investigation. STORY 2: 'A Long Shadow': Marietta Football Legend Dies at 81 Howard Jesse Simpson III, a prominent figure in Marietta known for his athletic achievements, local business, and strong faith, passed away at the age of 81. Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, Simpson played football at Marietta High School before earning a scholarship to Auburn University. He had a brief NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills. Simpson was also known for his contributions to the community through his successful construction business. Described as a "gentle giant," he leaves behind a legacy of kindness and respect. STORY 3: Mayor Expects Growth and Engagement in Mableton's First Full Year The city of Mableton, formed in June 2022, faces challenges and opportunities in its first six months. Despite a pending lawsuit alleging the city's formation was unconstitutional, leaders are working on building blocks, including tax filings and service agreements. The city plans to offer code enforcement, planning and zoning, sanitation, and parks and recreation services. Community engagement is the next phase, with the establishment of boards and commissions. Despite opposition, Mayor Michael Owens remains committed to the city's trajectory. The city also aims to be a leader in technological innovation for municipal governments. Growth management is a priority, considering Mableton's proximity to Atlanta. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG STORY 4: Stoner Says He Will Not Run in Redrawn Smyrna District State Rep. Doug Stoner, a Democrat from Smyrna, will not seek re-election due to redistricting placing him and state Rep. Teri Anulewicz into the same district. The redrawn district maps followed a federal judge's ruling that the previous GOP-drawn congressional maps violated the Voting Rights Act. Stoner plans to serve out his term until December 2024. This eliminates the possibility of a primary battle between the two Democrats, but Anulewicz faces a challenge from first-time candidate Gabriel Sanchez. Stoner's decision allows him to continue his advocacy for Smyrna and Cobb County, focusing on issues like emergency treatment for students with Type 1 diabetes. STORY 5: Korean Restaurant to Open on Church Street led by Local Chef Bōm, a casual Korean eatery, is set to open in the upcoming Bridger Properties development on Church Street in Marietta. The restaurant, slated to open this summer, will be led by Chef Brian So, who also manages the kitchen at Spring, a New American style restaurant on Marietta Square. Bōm aims to bring a unique culinary experience to Marietta Square, offering traditional Korean cuisine in a casual setting. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 12th Publish Date: Dec 11th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, December 12th and Happy heavenly Birthday to entertainer Frank Sinatra. ***12.12.23 -BIRTHDAY - FRANK SINATRA*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Councilwoman Calls for Cobb Court Clerk to Resign; Redistricting in Cobb Two 18-Year-Olds Indicted for Street Race That Killed 15-Year-Old Takeaways From Polling on the Cobb Transit Tax All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: AROUND TOWN: Councilwoman Calls for Cobb Court Clerk to Resign; Redistricting in Cobb Attorneys in Cobb County express frustration over a nearly three-month backlog in filing online court records, a delay considered unprecedented for the usually efficient court system. Cobb Superior Court Judge Rob Leonard has urged urgent filings to be sent directly to his office due to the backlog, prompting Marietta City Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson, also an attorney, to call for Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor's resignation. The delay has been exacerbated by a redistricting dispute and the creation of new maps, with Democrats alleging partisan gerrymandering by Republicans. Some Democratic incumbents, like Rep. Teri Anulewicz, face tough challenges in the new maps, drawing criticism for potential political motivations. Anulewicz is likely to run for re-election in District 42, potentially facing primary opposition from Smyrna resident Gabriel Sanchez, who announced his candidacy with a left-wing platform endorsed by the Atlanta chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. STORY 2: Two 18-Year-Olds Indicted for Street Race That Killed 15-Year-Old Two 18-year-olds, Garrett Tyler Betts and Caleb Evan Hasty, were indicted by a Cobb grand jury for their alleged involvement in an August street race that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old. The charges include first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, street racing, and speeding. The incident occurred on the East-West Connector when Hasty, driving a Pontiac G8 at 100 mph, and Betts in a Mustang were involved in a race. Betts lost control, collided with a tree, and the 15-year-old passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Both accused individuals were released on $82,720 bond last month. STORY 3: Takeaways From Polling on the Cobb Transit Tax A poll commissioned by a group of Cobb business leaders found that initially, 63% of voters supported a 30-year program to expand transit and build a new rapid bus system in Cobb County. However, as voters learned more about the transit tax proposal, support dropped to 47%, and undecideds increased from 9% to 25%. Opposition remained at 28%. The poll, conducted by LINK Public Affairs and Co/efficient, included 1,320 likely general election voters. It revealed variations in support across demographics, with stronger support among younger and older voters, Black voters, women, and less-educated voters. The proposed Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST) would fund transit programs over 10 or 30 years. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG STORY 4: Eager Children Rush Santa After Austell Parade The Austell Christmas celebration featured Santa Claus arriving on an Austell Fire Department engine, greeted by excited children. A parade followed, with dancing children, a gingerbread man reacting to horn blasts, and characters like Mr. Grinch and Whoville residents. Despite a one-week postponement due to weather, the festive spirit prevailed. Councilman Marlin Lamar sported a vibrant Christmas suit, and Darrell Weaver, the city's director of community affairs, dressed as Willy Wonka. The event concluded with the lighting of the Christmas tree. Families, like the Bowmans of Austell, expressed gratitude for the holiday season, their children, and the gifts they would share. STORY 5: 'It is a loss': Roswell Street Baptist Church Chapel Razed Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta has demolished its chapel and west wing, initiating a new era for the downsized congregation. The decision to create green space for sports and community activities followed a year of prayer, with the congregation opting to raze two additional buildings—the pregnancy center and counseling center. The $500,000 demolition project is part of a $1.7 million budget for renovations. The church aims to attract new members, especially young families, by offering sports programs and a family-oriented space. While the physical change signifies the end of an 80-year era, it marks a fresh beginning for the church. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: Ossoff Calls for Expanding Breast Cancer Screenings For Veterans in Marietta U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff visited Cobb County to discuss expanding access to breast cancer screenings for female veterans. The bipartisan amendment, introduced by Ossoff, Sen. Mike Braun, and Sen. Thom Tillis, added $10 million in funding for mobile mammogram screenings to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriation bill. Female veterans are 20 to 40% more likely to develop breast cancer than the general female population, according to Disabled American Veterans. Ossoff emphasized the importance of early detection and the need to prioritize screenings for female veterans, particularly those in rural areas. The bill awaits approval in the House of Representatives. STORY 7: Fullers Rec Center Becomes a Christmas Wonderland The Fullers Recreation Center in Marietta hosted the Christmas Wonderland event, attracting around 100 children who enjoyed various Christmas activities such as ornament decorating and cookie making. The event also featured performances from the Blue Diamond Step Team and the TLC Dance team. Tiffani Ephrom, the facilities manager, and Sobany King, the recreation coordinator, organized the event over two months to bring the community together and highlight the Fullers Recreation Center. Activities included watching "The Polar Express" in the theater, and the event aimed to spread Christmas spirit in the community. Cobb County Parks continues to organize various Christmas events throughout the year. Break: Henssler :60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
Earlier this month the national Democratic Socialist of America joined the Atlanta chapter of DSA in publicly endorsing a campaign to put a referendum on the November ballot that would stop “Cop City”, a massive police training facility that has been proposed to be built in the Weelaunee Forest - public forest land and one the largest remaining green spaces in Atlanta - surrounded by predominantly Black working class neighborhoods.Tonight we'll hear from Atlanta DSA member Gabriel Sanchez about the chapter's effort to stop Cop City through a ballot referendum, the terrifying tactics police, the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia have used to in order to crush opposition and what motivates them to keep fighting despite few clear victories for the Defund the Police and abolition movements in recent years. In this podcast we examine the rhetoric and the reality of Latino voting in the U.S. Are Latinos themselves to blame for not voting at the same rate as other groups? Or have the political parties created systems that keep Latino voters on the margins, and discourage them from participating in American democracy? Our guests - Latino analysts, organizers and journalists from around the country - reflect on lessons from the 2022 midterm elections, dive into polling research, and offer suggestions for election reform. Carolina González in New York City moderates this conversation with Maritza Félix in Arizona, Daniel Garza in Texas, Leo Murrieta in Nevada, Gabriel Sanchez in New Mexico and Virginia Lora in Florida.

Latino voters registered and voted in higher numbers in the 2020 presidential election than in prior years, according to a 2021 report, and recent findings from the Pew Research Center count 34.5 million eligible Latino voters, which is a significant increase since the last midterm elections. The results of the 2022 midterms will have lasting consequences on American politics and policy, making it critical to protect and amplify Latino voices along with the type of information they receive to make credible opinions about potential candidates and their platforms Tech Tank co-host, Nicol Turner Lee, spoke with Gabriel Sanchez, a David M. Rubenstein fellow in Governance Studies and faculty at the University of New Mexico, and Nora Benavidez, senior counsel and director of Digital Justice and Civil Rights at Free Press, about the ecosystem of Spanish-language media. Trump shrunk Democrats' advantage with Latino voters this year. Why do Latino voters usually support Democratic candidates by large margins and why did they swing toward Trump in 2020? Gabriel Sanchez finds that Latino voters were highly engaged this year but less focused on immigration, meaning traditional divisions on the economy were more salient. Latinos strongly supported Democrats in the last two elections, so Republicans had room to gain. Giovanni Castro finds that Latino national origin groups that emigrated from countries governed by right-wing leaders often identify with Democrats, whereas those fleeing countries governed by the left are more likely to be Republicans. That might explain why associating Democrats with socialism mattered this year. They both see a lot of diversity in the Latino electorate.

On this episode of the Co-Authored podcast, we learn about one the most ambitious recent collaborations. The Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey or CMPS has brought together hundreds of scholars of racial and ethnic politics. Started just in 2008, the collaboration aims to map the political opinions and behavior of people who have never been seen or studied in this way. Previous surveys have not had the focus on collecting a sufficiently large number of respondents to answer questions and compare the attitudes of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and other marginalized groups. The CMPS has aimed to solve this problem. The original team in 2008 included: Matt A. Barreto, (then at the University of Washington-Seattle) now at UCLA; Lorrie Frasure-Yokley, University of California, Los Angeles; Ange-Marie Hancock, University of Southern California; Sylvia Manzano, Latino Decisions; S. Karthick (Subramanian Karthick) Ramakrishnan, University of California, Riverside; Ricardo Ramirez, University of Notre Dame; Gabriel Sanchez, University of New Mexico; and Janelle Wong, University of Maryland. That team has grown to be much much bigger, likely over a hundred collaborators spread out across the country in 2020. Listen, learn, and share how this collaboration came together and what has made it work on this episode of the Co-Authored podcast. Join Oliver as he sits down with travelling artist Gabriel Sanchez. A very talented painter, sculptor and percussionist (to list a few of his many skills). Originally from Peru, Gabriel shares some of the experiences and impressions that he has had so far while visiting Canada for the last 5 months. The discussion leads into many interesting facts about Gabo's homeland of Peru. From mythical legends, to a bizarre (and brutal) custom that Oliver still can't believe is real.Recorded on November 7th, 2019Audio/Visual Production by Brian ReillyEdited (poorly) by Oliver GeorgeDon't forget that you can reach out to the show at: justchillpodcasting@gmail.com *For reference: The Peruvian ritual Gabriel eluded to is actually called a 'Yawar Fiesta'.

Gabriel Sanchez, PhD, Founder & CEO, Enspectra Health Gabriel Sanchez, PhD, is founder and CEO of Enspectra Health. As a doctoral student at Stanford University, Gabriel was the lead inventor of portable second harmonic generation microendoscopy and created the first functional system for in vivo tissue imaging of human skeletal muscle and connective tissues: the Zebrascope. Prior to founding Enspectra (formerly Zebra Medical Technologies), Gabriel taught biomedical device design in the Bioengineering Department at Stanford and consulted for several Biodesign teams at Stanford. Gabriel holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford and a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Zebra Medical Technologies is part of a new breed of medical device companies. They understand the reality that the funding market for truly novel, innovative devices is tight along with a host of other hurdles so they are always looking for advantageous ways to get more done with less resources. Based in the heart of Silicon Valley in Mountain View and hatched out of work done in the Stanford PhD program, Zebra Medical is creating a novel imaging system to permit live cellular pathology with cutting tissue. Their aim is to transform patient care across multiple medical regimes, and their current focus is to improve the diagnostics and treatment of skin cancers. Today we're join by Gabriel Sanchez, Zebra's founder and CEO, and Kate Montgomery, their lead R&D scientist who both have quite the impressive backgrounds. Gabriel got his BS in Mechanical Engineering at MIT before getting both his MS and PhD in the same discipline at Stanford. Kate also received her PhD from Stanford, hers being in Bioengineering, and it was there at the Stanford PhD lab that they first met. Having spent the last two years developing their technology at the prestigious Fogarty Institute of Innovation, they've also discovered some great business insights, such as the importance of quality management, and how leveraging technology has enabled them to be more efficient and pass a quality audit with flying colors even though they were going through the process for their first time. Specifically, some of the topics you'll hear about today include: ● Gabriel's and Kate's backgrounds that have led them to Zebra Medical Technologies. ● How greenlight.guru has helped Zebra Medical Technologies reach some of their milestones and put off hiring a consult or full time quality resource ● Kate's experience during an audit: How she prepared, stayed confident and passed with flying colors even though it was their first time going through one ● What to expect to see and hear in the future from Zebra Medical Technologies. ● Some information about the company's novel imaging system, which provides an alternative to the current method of surgical biopsies for live cellular pathology evaluation.

On Tuesday, voters across the country went to the polls in one of the most watched midterm elections in decades. And now the results are in. So what does it all mean? Scholars Didi Kuo and Gabriel Sanchez break down some of the biggest trends from the 2018 midterms, like the Latino vote, what they say about our two political parties, and what we can expect for the future. We talk with the Assistant Editor of Angelus Press, Mr. Gabriel Sanchez about this shocking news from the East. While it may be too early to call the Moscow Patriarchate’s move...
An interview with Gabriel Sanchez, editor for Angelus Press and an attorney for the Maul Law Group in Grand Rapid, MI. We discuss the difficulties people in debt face, the options they have for help, and the Catholic basis in Scripture and Tradition for aiding those in monetary distress and finding relief for those laboring under the weight of debt.
If we could get the first five years of life right, it would transform society: less crime, less violence, less poverty, more people having happy, productive lives. Lots of research backs that up. When young children suffer from poor health, neglect, missed learning opportunities, or trauma, they can pay for it for the rest of their lives. So do the rest of us. Many of our biggest social problems originate in troubled childhoods. So if the goal is to make the world better, improving life for the very young is one of the best things we can do. The people of California took a step in that direction in 1998 by passing Proposition 10. That created a state commission called First 5 and funded it with a tobacco tax. First 5 finds and supports effective early childhood programs. It also advocates on behalf of young children. The work gets done through 58 local First 5's, one in each California county. Spencer's guest is Gabriel Sanchez, the Director of Communications for the biggest one: First LA, covering Los Angeles County. Spencer first met Gabriel while both were doing communications work for the 2008 Obama for America campaign. As you’ll hear, Gabriel's experience includes politics, government, education, and now, trying to change the way we think about and invest in early childhood. Show Links First 5 LA First 5 California First 5 Parents' Site The Power of Moments, by Chip and Dan Heath (source of Gabriel's "trip over the truth" reference) "Myers study: Investing in children critical to nation’s economic, political future" "How to Say 'No' to a Toddler (Without Actually Saying No)" Gabriel Sanchez LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielsanchez Southern California native Gabriel Sanchez is the Director of Communications at First 5 LA. As the principal communications and marketing strategist for the organization, Gabriel leads a department of 12 to spearhead communications, media, social marketing, public education, advertising, digital and social media, sponsorships and related activities for First 5 LA’s ongoing work to support young children and their parents across Los Angeles County. Gabriel came to First 5 LA from Green Dot Public Schools, where he was the communications director. Previously, he was a senior strategist with The Strategy Group in Pasadena and an independent communications consultant in Orange County, serving a range of corporate, labor and political clients. He also has served in top communications roles in the offices of then-Governor Gray Davis and then-Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez. During the 2008 presidential campaign, he was the California Communications Director for Obama for America. Gabriel is a graduate of California State University Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Chicano studies. He is in the process of completing a master’s degree in political science from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. He also is a graduate of the MALDEF Leadership Development Program, and Cal State Fullerton’s Leadership Institute. A Letter from Gabriel to His First 5 LA Communications Staff I was thinking deeply about the “why” of what we do. We point to facts and figures on brain development. We talk about outcome areas. Yes, it’s about kids. Yet I feel we aren’t connecting with audiences. Then I thought about how parents are the focus of our work. What do parents do when they become parents? They re-order and re-prioritize their lives. Parents sacrifice. Parents go without. No more going out to eat, weekend getaways or fancy sportcars (if you could afford that earlier). Sleep is a like a long-lost friend you hope to see again someday. Why? Why endure all of that? Because parents want that little human to be the best they can possibly be. We speak that truth in the tagline below our current logo, but I offer to you we haven’t embraced it fully. Aside from some tax credits, there isn’t any new revenue that comes in when you have a child. Your spending on baby furniture, food and clothing skyrocket. And your household income may dip if one parent chooses or has to stay home with baby. We offer tips, ideas and resources to parents to help with these priorities. We don’t ask parents to “make a greater investment in early childhood development.” Maybe we shouldn’t ask decision makers and lawmakers either. Rather, we should ask them to “think like a parent” and prioritize policies accordingly. We can bridge our parenting and community audiences with decision makers by messaging a “parenting approach to policies.” Parents – that, is constituents - sacrifice and re-prioritize to give their kids the best start. We should ask lawmakers to do the same, across all policies. We should be asking decision makers and lawmakers to re-order their priorities, not make new investments, as if they too were parents and had to sacrifice for their kids. The Mercury News last week and the NYT’s California Today newsletter capture examples of decision makers taking a parenting approach to law making. In this case, it’s because they became parents themselves and “tripped over the truth.” (h/t Dan and Chip Heath, the authors “The Power of Moments,” who say, “the way to get an idea to stick is to have someone experience it.”) I can share my own example. I would have never lobbied my friend, then-Assembly Member Ricardo Lara, on diaper changing tables in mens’ restrooms unless I had experienced, first-hand, the frustration of needing to change my daughter’s diaper in stores that sold diapers and baby food. I’m not sure how this can fit into the message platform development, but I wanted to share the idea. Gabriel
