For much of India's democratic history, the woman voter has either been invisible or ignored – at times she has been spoken for, but very rarely listened to. A new book by the journalist Ruhi Tewari argues that this is no longer the case and seeks to understand why women have emerged from the political shadows. What Women Want: Understanding the Female Voter in Modern India draws on years of journalism and field reportage to trace the rise of the woman voter from 1947 to the present day.Ruhi is a journalist with nearly two decades of experience covering politics, policy and their intersection for leading Indian media organizations. She's developed a reputation for being a savvy political reporter who spends quality time in the field understanding what makes voters, politicians, and parties tick. Ruhi joins Milan on the show this to talk more about her new book. They discuss the “subtle but steady shift” in how women voters are perceived, the narrowing gender gap in voter turnout, and the distinctive voter behavior of India's women. Plus, Ruhi and Milan discuss the proliferation of “pro-women” welfare schemes and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's unique ability to connect with the woman voter.Watch this episode on YouTube here.Episode notes:1.

In 2014, Narendra Modi became India's Prime Minister, marking the beginning of what many experts and international watchgroups identify as a period of democratic erosion in the country. Since then, a number of other democracies around the world have followed India on this path — including, by many measures, the United States. On this episode, Dan Richards talks with two experts on Indian politics and society about Modi's rise in India: its causes and effects, how it compares to other instances of democratic erosion around the world, and what it can teach us about democracy's weaknesses and strengths. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him earlier Wednesday that India would halt imports of Russian oil. According to a Chinese analyst, Trump's remarks appear to be aimed at increasing pressure on Russia, particularly as his efforts to influence the Russia-Ukraine conflict have so far yielded little progress. He's assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia - I don't know, maybe that's a breaking story, can I say that?" Trump said from the Oval Office, according to CNN. He continued, "there will be no oil, he's not buying his oil from Russia, it started - you know, you can't do it immediately, it's a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon." Trump has for months been calling on India to cease purchasing Russian oil, citing India's continued purchases of cheap Russian oil in escalating his trade war. In August, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on India as a penalty for importing Russian oil and gas, building on a previously announced 25 percent tariff rate. In a follow-up exchange on Wednesday, Trump called Modi "a great man, and he loves Trump." India is in discussions with the US about energy sourcing, said India's Ministry of External Affairs, adding that New Delhi's policies have always been guided by the interests of the Indian consumers. The MEA response came after Trump's claim, according to Business Today. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "India is a significant importer of oil and gas. It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective." Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions," he added. Trump's claim that Modi had agreed to halt imports of Russian oil is likely a move aimed at pressuring Moscow, Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times. After all, Trump's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has so far failed to produce any tangible progress, Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times. By releasing such information, Washington appears to be signaling to Moscow in hopes of nudging it toward a cease-fire on terms set by the US, Qian said, noting that however, given the close ties between Russia and India, the effectiveness of this strategy remains uncertain. The US has long sought to pressure India on this issue, yet considering India's long-term foreign policy priorities and national interests, it is unlikely to fully abandon energy cooperation with Russia in the near future, Qian emphasized. haltv.停止;中止/hɔːlt/yieldv.产生;取得(结果、成果)/jiːld/volatileadj.

Jim Geraghty is back! Join Jim and Greg on Friday's 3 Martini Lunch as Jim shares highlights from his recent trip to India, including how the opportunity arose and why it happened now. He also explains how Indians are currently viewing the Trump administration and the overall relationship between India and the U.S. as well as the emerging threat from China.First, Jim shares how he got invited on the trip, the significance of the timing, and more. He also goes into detail about the RSS, a powerful group in Indian politics that is closely connected to current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Next, Jim details how Indian officials currently view the United States and President Trump. Some strain has emerged in the relationship over the past year, but it has less to do with the tariffs applied by Trump and more to do with how the administration intervened in the tensions between India and Pakistan earlier in the year. Finally, Jim reveals how India is watching China's relentless military buildup with increasing concern, both in terms of a possible invasion of Taiwan and India's own border problems with the Chinese. And, of course, Jim offers some additional humor and flavor from his visit to the world's most populous nation. Please visit our great sponsors:Open a new qualified IRA or cash account with Noble Gold and get a free 10-ounce Silver Flag Bar plus a Silver American Eagle Proof Coin—visit https://NobleGoldInvestments.com/3MLSupport your health with Dose Daily. Indian markets are poised for a steady start this Friday after the Nifty ended near the 25,200 mark. The Gift Nifty is hinting at a muted opening but renewed Modi-Trump camaraderie could buoy market sentiment. Meanwhile, global cues remain mixed as Asian markets track Wall Street losses. The spotlight today is on TCS's better-than-expected Q2 earnings and its ambitious AI plans, alongside Tata Elxsi's steady quarterly performance. Also LG Electronics IPO creates history as it becomes the first-ever IPO in India to cross Rs 4 lakh crore mark in subscription.
In the run-up to the Bihar Assembly elections, political parties are rolling out several welfare measures for women. On October 3, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar transferred ₹10,000 to the bank accounts of 25 lakh women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana. Earlier, on September 26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also announced the transfer of ₹7,500 crore under the same scheme to 75 lakh women. This pattern has been seen in other Assembly elections as well. Moreover, the share of women voters has also been steadily increasing over the years. Are women deciding Assembly elections?
Trump's foreign policy means the United States is leaving a vacuum in world affairs – and China looks increasingly willing to fill it. Following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin last month, what is the real nature of Xi Jinping and China's expanding but complex international relationships, including those with Narendra Modi in India and Vladimir Putin in Russia? On-again off again. Hot and cold. That's how I would describe more than 75 years of America's relationship with India. It's a story that seesaws between extremely close cooperation and virtually full ruptures and severe sanctions. And the goal of this interview is to learn from history how Pres. Trump's 50% tariffs may impact our relations with India now!
For a quarter century, Washington policymakers made a strategic bet on India premised on the belief that shared values, shared interests, and a shared strategic convergence in Asia would bind these two countries together as ‘natural allies' in the twenty-first century. All of this optimistic talk came crashing down to Earth a few months ago with the Trump administration's decision to slap 25 percent tariffs on Indian exports. This was exacerbated by a second decision to add an additional 25 percent tariff on India for its import of Russia oil. Taken together, these policy measures plunged U.S.-India relations into their most significant crisis since the late 1990s and the era of U.S. sanctions on India in the wake of the latter's nuclear tests. How did we get here? Where are we now? And where might we be going? These are the questions Milan takes up on this week's show with guest Ashley J. Tellis. Tellis is the Tata Chair for Strategic Affairs at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and is well-known to Grand Tamasha listeners as one of the sanest, wisest voices on South Asia and U.S.-India relations, more specifically. Milan and Ashley discuss the policy of U.S. “strategic altruism” toward India, the ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and India, and Modi's recent visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in China. Plus, the two discuss the latest turn in U.S.-Pakistan relations and whether the thaw in China-India relations is sustainable. Episode notes:1. Robert D. Blackwill and Ashley J. But the group noted that “In exceptional circumstances, consideration will be given to financing upstream gas in the poorest countries where there is a clear benefit in terms of energy access for the poor and the project fits within the countries' Paris Agreement commitments.” The Trump Administration is advocating for the World Bank to increase its financing for oil and gas projects, a reversal of its previous policy to cease funding new fossil fuel ventures after 2019. This push prioritizes energy security, especially for upstream gas developments, and also extends to other development banks to finance fossil fuel projects. The U.S. is also pushing other development banks to finance fossil fuels, including gas pipeline projects, according to FT's sources. In recent years, the World Bank and many commercial banks have backed out of lending money to some fossil fuels, including coal, oil sands, and Arctic oil and gas. Banks were under intense shareholder and stakeholder pressure to cut their exposure to fossil fuels and align their lending portfolios to the Paris Agreement goals. But the tables have turned with the U.S. Administration strongly promoting fossil fuels and America's dominance in oil and gas exports. That is, until a series of events gummed up the works.” It seems that the “bromance” has ended in Trump's second term. “From Trump's tariffs and India's purchase of oil from Russia to a U.S. tilt toward Pakistan, friction between New Delhi and Washington has been hard to miss. And much of it has happened far from the corridors of power and, unsurprisingly, through Trump's posts on social media.

Tommy & Ben discuss China's summit in Tianjin, which brought together leaders from 20 countries, including India, Iran, Russia, and North Korea, and how it signals a major shift in global alliances. They talk about the schism between Trump and India's President Narendra Modi and how Trump keeps conceding to China on issues like AI and student visas despite his many empty threats. Also covered: the administration's illegal airstrike on a Venezuelan boat allegedly carrying drugs, the new for-profit ethnic cleansing plan for Gaza, how the gutting of USAID is hobbling the response to Afghanistan's devastating earthquake, and Steve Witkoff's stupendous incompetence in his role as special envoy for….everything. Then, Tommy speaks with journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who covers the West Bank on his Substack, Infinite Jaz. They talk about what life is like for Palestinians there, the far-right's goal of achieving total annexation of the territory, and the pipe dream of a two-state solution. Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and held hands with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Beijing this weekend. Their talks came during the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting, an event that marked the first time in seven years that Presidents Modi and Xi met in person. It also comes as the US navigates a rocky relationship with China, combats India's frustration over President Donald Trump's tariffs, and tries to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine. To discuss further what Putin's latest bromance with Xi and Modi means for his on-again, off-again relationship with Trump, we spoke with Tommy Vietor. This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower, Tyler McBrien, and Peter Harrell to talk through the week's big national security news stories, including:“Faginomics.” With the recent announcement that the U.S. government would be taking a 10% stake in the company Intel, the Trump administration has ushered in a new era of state-guided industrial policy, fueled by concerns of major power competition, particularly around the race to AI. How does this new policy intersect with its other novel economic priorities, such as the imposition of tariffs? And how legally viable is it, given present (and potentially future) legal challenges?“Ménage à Trois.” On the margins of the recent meeting of the China- and Russia-led Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a point of warmly (and very publicly) embracing Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping—a move many have taken as a clear shot across the bow at the Trump administration, which has been in heated economic negotiations with India over tariffs and trade relations. What does this exchange say about the Trump administration's handling of the U.S. relationship with India—and other key U.S. relationships?“Midnight Planes Going Nowhere.” In an emergency hearing over the holiday weekend, federal judge Sparkle Sooknanan stopped the Trump administration from deporting hundreds of unaccompanied Guatemalan minor migrants to their home country—a move that the government of Guatemala has now claimed that it invited. What should we make of this move by the Trump administration? And how does it fit within its broader immigration crackdown? In object lessons, Tyler biked to City Island, NY, discovering a charming little enclave with great food, shops, and beaches. Sticking with the New York theme, Anna recommends “John Proctor is the Villain,” a play by a writer from her Georgia hometown that's so good it's making women cry. Scott, meanwhile, left New York behind to live his best Neapolitan life with a new backyard pizza oven that can achieve the appropriate temp for a puffy crust. And Peter's been reading “When the Clock Broke,” a reminder that the 1990s may have been the dress rehearsal for our current political dumpster fire, all the while keeping an eye on challenges to Trump v.
