From his days of having a “hall pass” to play with Dr. Lorraine Wilson as a child to bringing LIFE and MUSIC to Preservation Hall, Mr. Louis Ford embodies so much of “What it Means to Love New Orleans”. He shares with us what it meant to sit next to THE legendary Mr. Clarence Ford (his father) and play and record music-while realizing his genetic calling to serve this profession. Mr. Ford teaches, and performs with such passion.Listen in and learn about “The 3rd floor of Charity Hospital” and what that still conjures in his soul.Hear how his proximity to the “Greats” of Jazz Music like Fats Domino, Mr. Charlie Gabriel and many more propelled him to remain here-in New Orleans--while still traveling and sharing this gift of music all over the world. We thank Mr. Louis Ford, Preservation Hall and ALL the musicians for their fostering of this LOVE OF JAZZ in the next generation with the “Kids in the Hall” program. He also, along with Jazz Foundation of America, helps our older community and family members remember the life that music can evoke. We are NEVER TOO OLD to fall in love with music, our city and each other-one note at a time… https://lessons.preshallfoundation.orghttps://fordmusicproductions.comhttps://www.preshallfoundation.orghttps://jazzfoundation.org

Conversation highlights: Music opened the world to her, but she began in Miami (hometown). She went to NYC to launch her recording career, not get into nightclub singing, which is demanding. But she worked hard gigging while going to school! Take a listen, and you can understand the magnitude of her talent, hoot spa, love for her musical studies while singing six nights a week! Her work in Europe Her brother Curtis, their background, and its impact on her music How she creatively worked through the early lockdown days of covid and the negativity in the world.  Carmen spent 8-to-10-hour days, four ½ months to edit VHS film that celebrates the music & conversations of her mother and aunts, singers in a gospel group for over 40 years! To revisit that “time tunnel” was a gift, and Nothing But The Blood was born! Her Grammy-nominated work Modern Ancestors https://youtu.be/8dyKPez2SM0 We speak of her work Soul to Soul. Today's guest deejay is Steve Targo, AKA Inner Travels. I met Steve when Soundwave guest deejay Rhucle (listen to his mix here) who he knew who he knew would share a mix with us. He suggested Steve. After listening to today's show, you'll hear why. It's a lovely mix, and by coincidence, it paired well with the rare rainy weather we've been having in San Diego for the last week. There were times when I wasn't sure if what I was hearing was the rain outdoors or Steve's music indoors. It was a magical experience. If you'd like to hear more music from Steve, be sure to check out his project, Nimbudala. His debut album, Universal Compassion will be released on October 22, and you can pre-order it on Bandcamp as well as listen to a few preview tracks. Steve says while the album still fits in the New Age ambient realm, it also has more acoustic sounds and influences from kosmiche, rock, jazz, and world music. I'm playing the album as I write this, and it's wonderful. Steve has some words about today's show below. Before I leave you, I wanted to tell you about a project that I'm launching on January 1, 2022, called Genius and Soul. The show will feature a series of mixes from guest deejays from Jazz and Black Classical Music to today's scene's many styles and branches. Our show's efforts will also include fundraising for the Jazz Foundation of America. Follow us on Twitter for more updates. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be PCM. See you then! Here is, I believe, an excellent primer for those interested in exploring the music of Inner Travels—four songs from four albums released between 2016 and 2019. From trance-inducing synthesizer work to an improvisation led by electric piano and singing bowls, the common theme in this mix is rain. I say “mix,” but really, this feels to me like its own album. Thanks for listening, and Joseph, thanks for asking me to do this! Sarah Dash defines the word "legend." As an award-winning vocalist, songwriter, motivational speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Sarah is a unique force whose voice has touched millions of listeners around the world. From co-founding Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles and making history as a member of Labelle to becoming the very first Music Ambassador (2017) of Trenton, New Jersey, Sarah has blazed a trail in every facet of her remarkable career. Music has been a constant source of inspiration in Sarah's life ever since her childhood in Trenton. The seventh of thirteen children born to Elder Abraham Dash and Mother Elizabeth Dash, Sarah sang in the Trenton Church of Christ Choir as a young girl and entertained her classmates with renditions of standards like "With These Hands." The radio dial introduced her to everything from R&B and rock 'n' roll to country and polka, with the voices of Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Smokey Robinson shaping some of Sarah's earliest influences alongside albums by Mahalia Jackson, Nat "King" Cole, Andy Williams, and her brother's jazz collection. Doo-wop groups The Capris and The Dells inspired the name of Sarah's first group, the Del-Capris, which included another Trenton-based singer, Nona Hendryx. When Sarah and Nona teamed with Patricia (Patti) Holte and Cynthia (Cindy) Birdsong of The Ordettes, a new group was born — The Bluebelles. Beginning in 1962, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles were among the most dynamic vocal groups of the 1960s, recording for major labels like Cameo-Parkway and Atlantic, touring the Chitlin' Circuit, and earning rave reviews for their appearances at the Apollo Theater where they were affectionately nicknamed "The Sweethearts of the Apollo." Four years after Cindy Birdsong left the Bluebelles to join Diana Ross & the Supremes, Sarah, Patti, and Nona signed with Warner Bros., unveiling a new name and a new style on Labelle (1971) and Moon Shadow (1972), and recording with acclaimed singer-songwriter Laura Nyro on Gonna Take a Miracle (1971). Working with manager and former Ready Steady Go! producer Vicki Wickham, the trio began writing their own songs and geared their sound towards a progressive fusion of rock and soul. With the release of Pressure Cookin' (1973) on RCA, Labelle transformed into funk-rock goddesses outfitted in fashion-forward couture. A trio of albums on Epic Records, the gold-selling Nightbirds (1974), Phoenix (1975), and Chameleon (1976), sparked Labelle's breakthrough to mainstream success. They topped the Hot 100 with "Lady Marmalade," graced the cover of Rolling Stone, sold out theaters across the country, and made history as the first black group to perform at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. After Labelle parted ways in 1977, Sarah embarked on a successful solo career. She acted in and wrote the theme song to Watch Your Mouth! (1978), a PBS series produced by Ellis Haizlip (Soul!) that also starred Joe Morton (Scandal). She released three albums on CBS-distributed Kirshner Records, Sarah Dash (1978), Oo-La-La (1980), and Close Enough (1981), scoring a massive disco hit with "Sinner Man," which featured Jerry Butler. Throughout the '80s and '90s, she recorded a series of club singles, including "Low Down Dirty Rhythm," plus her fourth solo effort You're All I Need (1988) on EMI-Manhattan Records. Her highly accalimed Gospel project featured several of her own self-penned tracks, including "I'm Still Here," which has since become a show-stopper of her concerts. In between producing her one-woman stage shows, "Dash of Diva" and "Sarah: One Woman," Sarah brought her talent to several different projects. Having worked with a variety of acts like Living Colour, Nile Rodgers, Alice Cooper, The Marshall Tucker Band, The O'Jays, Wilson Pickett and Bo Diddley over the years, she toured and recorded with Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos and appeared on the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels (1989) album. She reunited with Patti and Nona for the #1 club hit "Turn It Out" (1995), received the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's "Pioneer Award" in 1999, and recorded the Labelle reunion album Back to Now (2008), featuring productions by Lenny Kravitz, Wyclef Jean, and Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. In 2017, the members of Labelle were inducted to the Philadelphia Music Alliance's Music Walk of Fame. She's a member of the Grammy Board of Governors (Philadelphia chapter), serves as the Grammy New Jersey Ambassador for the Advocacy Board of the Membership Committee, and is a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame (2003), as well as the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic Orchestra. Most recently, she joined fellow legends at the Apollo Theater for the Jazz Foundation of America's salute to singer Merry Clayton. Sarah Dash has built on a legacy that traces more than 50 years of music. Like the greatest music legends, there is truly no limit to the inspiration Sarah Dash brings to every note she sings.

Great Billie Taylor explains the origin of jazz in the United States. Billy Taylor was an American jazz pianist, composer, broadcaster and educator. He was the Robert L. Jones Distinguished Professor of Music at East Carolina University in Greenville, and from 1994 was the artistic director for jazz at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. A jazz activist, Taylor sat on the Honorary Founders Board of The Jazz Foundation of America, an organisation he started in 1989, with Ann Ruckert, Herb Storfer and Phoebe Jacobs, to save the homes and the lives of America's elderly jazz and blues musicians, later including musicians who survived Hurricane Katrina. Taylor was also a jazz educator, who lectured in colleges, served on panels and travelled worldwide as a jazz ambassador. Critic Leonard Feather once said, "It is almost indisputable that Dr. Billy Taylor is the world's foremost spokesman for jazz."

Kassa Overall - “Darkness In My Mind” from I THINK I’M GOOD on Brownswood Recordings. Originally hailing from Seattle and now based out of New York, Kassa Overall has used his inimitable blend of jazz, hip-hop, and experimental leanings to explore heady and existential topics. With his latest record, I THINK I’M GOOD, he’s at his most personal and revealing. On the record he explores his own experiences with mental illness, having experienced manic episodes and subsequent hospitalizations in his youth.  “Mental instability or hyper-sensitivity was something that felt too taboo to talk about," Kassa Overall says in the record’s Bandcamp description. "I want to show the world that mentally sensitive people are the innovators of our society, and hopefully set a new standard that includes a healthy way of life and embracing our unique perspective on reality.” He addresses these themes directly on the LP’s standout track, “”Darkness In My Mind.” Joined by jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner, the two create an atmosphere that veers into the gothic with elegant-yet-nightmarish piano keys cascading against Overall’s mournful, vocoder-effected vocals. The song veers drastically between moments of beauty and bliss to skittering, hectic rhythms and electronic fever dreams. The musical tension is an apt complement to Overall’s musings over his troubles, recreating that troubling and inescapable dream that can come in our most difficult mental moments.  In conjunction with KEXP’s upcoming Music Heals: Mental Health, we’re asking Song of the Day artists to spotlight a different organization. Overall has chosen the Jazz Foundation of America’s Musicians Emergency Fund. The foundations outlined goal is to create a program that protects artists and “turns despair into hope.” They do this by ensuring blues, jazz, and roots artists are given the housing assistance they need, the care they need to stay healthy, and financially security to keep their basic needs met.  Learn more about the Jazz Foundation of America here. Watch Live Tonight at 8pm EST and 10pm EST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYoeS...   #bobbybroom #jazzfoundationofamerica #chicagomusicrevealed   About Bobby Broom By 16, Broom had a regular gig with bebop pianist Al Haig when the saxophone colossus himself, Sonny Rollins, invited him to go on tour. Broom declined, though he did perform with Rollins at Carnegie Hall later that year. Five years later, including one at Berklee, Broom at last joined Rollins’s touring band, ultimately spending two five-year stints with him. Prior to joining Rollins, Broom declined yet another prestigious gig—a spot in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers—to instead sign with GRP Records and make his crossover jazz debut, 1981’s Clean Sweep. That record and its follow-up, 1984’s Livin’ for the Beat (Arista), attracted a following and promised a career in what would soon be known as smooth jazz. Broom, ever independent-minded, though, instead jumped ship for Chicago, where he concentrated on straight-ahead jazz. He continued with Rollins, joined Kenny Burrell’s Jazz Guitar Band, and worked with Miles Davis, Stanley Turrentine, and his early idol Charles Earland. In the 1990s Broom formed two trios: The eponymous Bobby Broom Trio and the Deep Blue Organ Trio. Deep Blue recorded four albums before its dissolution in 2013. Broom also made three quartet records (No Hype Blues, Waitin’ and Waitin’, and Modern Man) before deciding to focus on his guitar- bass-drums trio as his primary outlet, beginning in 2001 with Stand! (Premonition). He solidified a lineup with bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins with 2006’s Song and Dance, which was also Broom’s first recording for Origin. That trio also scored with the vibrant 2008 live date The Way I Play and the 2009 Bobby Broom Plays for Monk, which Allmusic’s Rick Anderson called “a warm and wonderful tribute to one of America’s finest composers.” Makaya McCraven was introduced on drums for Upper West Side Story (2012), Broom’s first collection of all original compositions, and My Shining Hour (2014), his first standards album. The Organi-Sation was born from the ashes of the Deep Blue Organ Trio, which had been a regular touring opener for Steely Dan. Unaware of their 2013 disbanding, the Dan once again called Broom in 2014 to book his “organ group” for their summer tour. Broom was reluctant to throw together another organ combo when he wanted to focus on his working trio, but McCraven wouldn’t hear of it. “He said, ‘Man, you can’t not do this,’” Broom recalls. “He said, ‘Let’s sit down, go through our rolodexes, and figure this out.’” When they reached the name of organist Ben Paterson, Broom thought he might be on to something. As Paterson was about to begin an extended stay in Chicago, he agreed to join the band. McCraven took a leave midway through the tour, with Watkins replacing him. The Organi-Sation quickly jelled as such: “I thought after the Deep Blue Organ Trio that I would never feel anything quite like that chemistry again,” Broom says. “And boy, was I wrong.” If Soul Fingers was the product of that chemistry, it’s also a natural outgrowth of Broom’s personal artistic values. “The interpretation of popular songs doesn’t seem to be the mode du jour for jazz players, but I have to play music and a style that suits me, one that I want to hear,” he says. “This record—these songs, this presentation—is how I want to engage with the world.”

Kayti Didriksen is a multidisciplinary artist focused on capturing movement and sound with line and color. Didriksen uses blind contour drawing, a fundamental hand eye coordination technique of learning to draw what you see to record the ephemeral traces of movement during live music and performances. In the next step of her process, she overlaps the drawings creating a matrix for larger scale work that represents space and movement with color and generates the feeling of the performance in the viewer. She also draws as a performance, engaging guests at events with quick and quirky lines while speaking about what happens to the brain during this process. Didriksen has collaborated with organizations throughout the US and abroad including Faberge’, TEDx, The Joan Mitchell Foundation, NYU, Brooklyn Museum, and the Jazz Foundation of America as well as countless bands and musicians. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, NY Times, CNN and the BBC. She served as the Artist in Residence for the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2017. In addition to her more line-driven works, Didriksen enjoys painting landscapes in plein air with a palette knife while traveling. Currently, Didriksen lives in Washington, D.C., and is the Artist in Residence for Long and Foster Capital Region.

Those are La Palapa, The El [caption id="attachment_194" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into The Vista Grill. That’s The Vista Grill that used to be up on the hill overlooking the city?  Well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where you get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and it’s right there on the beach with a dramatic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course at La Palapa you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 22nd of August, 2017. The Ocean Grill Closed Down By Authorities Last week I talked about taking a hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas Beach. Remember? And in that podcast we talked about the famous Ocean Grill built into the cliffs at Colomitos Cove. Well, if latest my podcast has spurred you to give the Ocean Grill a try, hold everything boys and girls, stop the presses, the restaurant has been temporarily shut down by the authorities. Mexico’s equivalent of the EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency, has put an end to their operation. There are lots of stories swirling around, I have a link to an article written about the closure which you can find in the show notes of this podcast. Hey, listen, I have some information from pretty solid sources as  to what's going on, but for now, I just want you to know that if you currently have a reservation for the Ocean Grill, it will not be honored. They won’t send a panga to Boca de Tomatlan to pick you up and whisk you to Colomitos Cove and the Ocean Grill. They are shuttered at least until further notice.  http://www.elsoldenayarit.mx/cultura/54509-clausura-profepa-obras-e-instalaciones-del-complejo-turistico-ocean-grill-en-jalisco Upcoming Hotel and Resort Reviews One of my friends, Pamela, who lives in Lake Chapala just spent some time at the Garza Blanca Resort just south of Puerto Vallarta and I want to find out what she and her husband thought of the place. But more than that, Pamela is going to talk a little about her timeshares she owns and about the properties in Puerto Vallarta and along the Bajia de Banderas. I would consider Pam to be a luxury traveler. You remember, in the first episode I promised that this show was for the economy as well as the luxury traveler, well this episode will be for you. Imagine if you will, living just 6 hours’ drive from Puerto Vallarta like Pamela, that’s like me driving from LA to San Francisco. Well, that’s what Pamela needs to do to get to Puerto Vallarta. Pretty cool, right? How often would you hit PV a year if you could just hop in the car and drive there? What like, once a month? Well Pamela knows lots of great restaurants all along the bay, and more so stay tuned. Man killed by Crocodile in Ameca River, Puerto Vallarta Remember when me and JR talked about the crocodiles that live in Puerto Vallarta? Well, check out this article from yesterday’s Vallarta Daily.com.. The State Civil Protection and Fire Department of Jalisco confirms that a man in Puerto Vallarta was attacked by a crocodile in the Ameca River while fishing and was found dead. The man was identified as Gerardo Alvarez, 30, Corporal with the 41 Military Zone, who at the time was fishing in the river, located in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta. The report was received on Saturday when the search for the missing man began in the river, but the search was discontinued in the evening. Sunday morning the search was continued at 8:00 AM with the body being recovered at 9:44 AM in the Bay. The exact cause of death and injuries is still being investigated, however experts in crocodiles believe the man was fishing along the banks of the river with his feet inside the water. The crocodile, defending his territory, grabbed the man by his feet and dragged him into the river. The body showed signs of bites from the attack. Okay, so the Ameca river is the river that separates the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. It’s just north of the airport. You can see the crockodiles sometimes just lying there on the sandbars as you drive over the bridge, and there’s signs posted everywhere so heed the warning signs folks. Now crocodiles are actually seen regularly in the Marina, on golf courses. They are around so be aware. I have a link to the article in the show notes to this episode so check it out if you wish. https://www.vallartadaily.com/news/puerto-vallarta/crocodile-attack/   I received a couple of notes and letters and one great review on iTunes this week. The iTunes review is from Leaningoak from somewhere in the USA writes…. Excellent listen for travelers to paradise aka Puerto Vallarta in iTunes by Leaningoak from USA on August 14, 2017 Listening to Barry’s podcast has become very addictive. Before my last trip to paradise aka Puerto Vallarta earlier this year I discovered this absolutely essential listen for travelers to Mexico’s most popular tourist destination. And since returning home I continue to listen each week carefully noting travel tips for my next vacation. I would love to meet Barry in person but for now the world has this excellent podcast to keep us up to date and informed. The podcast has introduced us to J.R. of VallartaInfo.com who has lived in Puerto Vallarta for almost 40 years. We have gotten to hear from full time resident and restaurant reviewer Gary Beck. And then there’s an episode with Gary Thompson, owner of Galeria Pacifico, who graciously donates his time to do free walking tours along the Malecon. All excellent listening and soo much more. Thank you Barry for PuertoVallartaTravelShow.com and your podcasts! Thank you Leaning. I would love to meet with you too sometime in paradise. Let me know the next time you’re planning on coming down and if I’m in town, why not? Last time I was in town I had a meet and greet open mic event at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse and we had a pretty good showing, problem was, some of my interviewees were a little bit sloshed. I mean, some of the interviews were actually pretty good, and I have some of those coming in the next few weeks to come, but man, I listened to some of the interviews and I just can’t use a whole bunch of them. I mean… well, it is a family show. Plus, I’m just not quick enough with the beeper to keep us rated as clean in iTunes. Just saying. Anyway Leaning Oak, we need to have a beer or a Paloma. Oh, I gotta tell you about Palomas but before I get off the subject, I just want you know Leaningoak from the USA, that these reviews keep me going. So Thanks by all means, all of you, and keep them coming in. Please. Okay, back to Palomas. In the interview I had with Jeff Bassett from Sun Sport Travel, Two weeks ago, oh by the way, Jeff wanted me to let all of [caption id="attachment_1384" align="alignright" width="300"] Amy Armstrong, The Palm Cabaret[/caption] you know that he is now full time in the travel agency business, so check out the links again to Sun Sport Travel on my links page. Anyhoo we talked with Jeff about fun in the summer sun.  Jeff and I were going back and forth about Palomas, Jeff saying that he was told that the true margarita was a Paloma, made with tequila, lime and squirt, and I laughed at him. Well, I got an email from my buddy Skip, from Minnisocold, we and Skip says this…. Like Jeff, I like the Paloma (Dove) as opposed to the Margarita (Daisy).  Palomas are less sweet and syrupy to my palate and I like the grapefruit taste. I make them with 4 parts Tequila, 1 part Lime Juice and add ice and either Squirt (Grapefruit soda) or Fresca (the sugar free stuff) to taste. Now I had to look up The Daisy and it’s made as  follows… INGREDIENTS 45mls of tequila 15mls triple sec [caption id="attachment_1363" align="alignright" width="198"] Incanto Puerto Vallarta[/caption] 30mls lime juice 15mls sugar syrup 15mls lemon juice 5mls orange juice Guava soda water   All right then, Who knew, but here’s how I was always taught a margarita was made. [caption id="attachment_1365" align="alignright" width="198"] Incanto Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Ingredients Lime wedge, plus 2 lime wheels for garnish 1 tablespoon coarse salt, for glass rims 4 ounces high quality blanco tequila (see note above) 2 ounces Cointreau 1 1/2 ounces fresh juice from 2 limes Directions Run lime wedge around the outer rims of two rocks glasses and dip rims in salt. Set aside. In cocktail shaker, combine tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. Fill with ice and shake until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds (the bottom of a metal shaker should frost over). Fill glasses with fresh ice and strain margarita into both glasses. Garnish with lime wheels and serve. I really like Skip, He’s my kind of guy. We’ve been emailing back and forth. He wanted to know the best places to buy alcohol in PV and maybe in an upcoming episode, I’ll give you all the great tips for stocking up on alcohol for your extended stay in paradise. I mean, what kind of fun do you expect to have if your liver isn’t properly pickled in Paradise Pal? Really! [caption id="attachment_149" align="aligncenter" width="705"] The Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Guide With Author Gary Beck[/caption]   Puerto Vallarta Entertainment Venues [caption id="attachment_1346" align="alignleft" width="300"] Act II Stages[/caption]   Okay Let’s get to the show, Back in February I had a great conversation with Gary Beck, the author of The Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Guide, and we talked all about the restaurant scene in Puerto Vallarta. Gary is a wealth of knowledge and I asked to let me interview him again so we could talk about the entertainment scene in Puerto Vallarta.     So we sat down back in May and talked about the different venues as well as the shows from the previous year. One of the busiest places we [caption id="attachment_1366" align="alignright" width="340"] Danny Mininni[/caption] talked about was Act II Stages and The Red room cabaret, and I thought before we get into the conversation with Gary, I would bring on Danny Mininni, the head honcho at Act II to talk about what’s in store for the rest of the summer season. So let’s go to Puerto Vallarta and talk with Danny… [caption id="attachment_1362" align="alignnone" width="692"] Supermana[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1361" align="alignright" width="691"] Christine Deaver[/caption] Listen to The Interview   [caption id="attachment_1364" align="alignleft" width="213"] Salvatore Rodriguez[/caption] Also, before we get into Gary’s interview I want to introduce you to Salvatore Rodriguez. Salvatore is a Pianista. A pianist with a career spanning 38 years, and one of his claims to fame is that he is a Liberace Impersonator. Salvatore performs at Incanto at the piano bar playing for the breakfast and lunch crowd. But this week, if you happen to be in town, Salvatore will be playing at Incanto, August the 31st.  Here’s Salvatore explaining how he earned his stage name. … Listen to The Interview I like Salvatore a lot, and when I get back to Vallarta in a few weeks, I’m going to do an entire segment on this wonderful man. Stay tuned, Now, Back to the interview with Gary Beck all about the entertainment scene in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. [caption id="attachment_1354" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Palm Opening Night 17[/caption] Listen to The Interview Okay, that should do it for this week’s episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. We Talk Her concept, menu, and Cooking Classes  Subscribe to The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show on iTunes Listen to the Podcast Below!       Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be to introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants,  La Palapa and The Eldorado Restaurant on [caption id="attachment_196" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] the Southside of town, right down on the beach in Puerto Vallarta La Palapa is one of Vallarta’s oldest and most loved restaurants with that toes in the sand experience right at the water’s edge. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, a great location and a great time awaits you. It’s so romantic, so Puerto Vallarta. If you haven’t been here yet, take my advice and get your selves down here. The people of Vallarta await you with open arms. Take my word for it. Semana Santa in Mexico This week I have a real treat for you guys but before I get to the show, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 16th of April, 2017. Today is Easter and  Easter in Mexico is a two-week holiday consisting of Semana Santa (The Holy Week, beginning on Palm Sunday and ending Easter Saturday) and Pascua (Starting with Easter Sunday and ending the following Saturday). Now believe it or not, because the holiday calendar is really long and frequent here in Mexico, Semana Santa is without a doubt, the most important holiday in [caption id="attachment_382" align="alignright" width="300"] Semana Santa[/caption] Mexican culture. Many Mexican families go on holiday during Semana Santa and Pascua so if you plan on just popping in during this time of the year, you may have trouble squeezing into a room so be aware of that. Anyway, all around Mexico, Mexicans celebrate the last days of Christ during Holy Week with elaborate processions, ceremonies, and rituals. Most of the larger Semana Santa celebrations include a dramatic reenactment of the capture, the trial, and the crucifixion of Jesus. Mexicans are known for practicing unique traditions during Semana Santa such as acts of physical torture, public displays of political/social ridicule, and displays of resolutions and commitment. [caption id="attachment_383" align="alignleft" width="300"] Semana Santa[/caption] In some of the more devout regions of Mexico like Taxco, the reenactments include penitentes – men and women who show their penitence and prove their faith by inflicting physical pain. Many of us have seen these reenactments. Very interesting. Lots of parades and processions. Very cool. Just be ready for the crowds. In fact, the reports I’m getting and the pictures I’m seeing of the crowds at the beach are all pointing towards a record number of visitors. Traffic was backed up for miles on the road coming into Vallarta on Friday. The Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta Highway to Open Soon Also, this week, the new highway connection between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta was supposed to have it’s grand opening. This highway will shorten the time it takes to travel by road from Puerto Vallarta to  Guadalajara from 5 hours to 2 1/2 hours. That is a big deal for travelers who want to see Guadalajara while in Puerto Vallarta. You can actually make it a day trip. Really cool. Puerto Vallarta Airport Updates And they are still slaving away at the airport. One day it will be complete and I will update my photos if they become unusable so let’s see. For information on what [caption id="attachment_109" align="alignright" width="300"] What to Expect When You Arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Airport[/caption] to expect when you arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Airport, Packing tips, cell phone plan tips and more, listen to episodes 2 and 3 of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show where we talk about all of those important items and more so listen to the podcasts or read my shownotes to those shows. Meet-Up in May? I’m also thinking of doing a meetup for the Middle of May in Puerto Vallarta. I’ll bring my microphones and we can hear from you listeners about what you are up to in paradise. If you are interested, send me an email by clicking on the Contact Us tab at the top of the page and let’s see is we get some interest. I will be there from the 7th through the 16th of May so let’s see what we can do. Let’s get to the show.... [caption id="attachment_417" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] El Array'an Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Photo by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] We are coming upon the month of May and here in Puerto Vallarta, that means Restaurant Week in Puerto Vallarta! So the next couple of shows are going to [caption id="attachment_365" align="alignright" width="300"] El Arrayan, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] concentrate on food in Puerto Vallarta and today I will be talking with Carmen Porras, the co-owner of El Arrayan Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. She will tell us about their menu, and her great cooking classes she gives. So we will be talking with Carmen in a few minutes. But it’s been a little while since we’ve heard from JR so let’s bring him on to talk a little about some tours that you can do by yourself, without the help of a tour guide or a tour company so Let’s zip on over to Puerto Vallarta and JR. Conversation With JR in PV This week saw the end of an era here in Puerto Vallarta with the Passing of longtime resident Howard McGill. Howard was the husband of Jenny McGill who was [caption id="attachment_387" align="alignright" width="300"] US Embassy Mexico[/caption] an employee for the US consular office , in Puerto Vallarta from 1982-1996. [caption id="attachment_370" align="alignleft" width="212"] Drama & Diplomacy in Sultry Puerto Vallarta[/caption] The consular office is under the auspases of the State department and the US embassy. And she wrote a book titled Drama & Diplomacy: In Sultry Puerto Vallarta is a really fun read. You can get the book through Amazon for $18 US. You knew Jenny didn’t you JR? Listen to the Podcast... Her job was in part, to get hold of persons related to US  citizens in trouble, dead, dying, roaming the streets naked, you name it. She tells stories of repatriation of live and dead US citizens.   At any rate, if you happen to be a Puerto Vallarta freak like me, you need to get this book, then share with other freaks. New DIY Page at Vallarta Info.com You have a new page on your website at vallartainfo.com. I was hoping we could go over that today with our listeners and me. It’s a DIY page right? Listen to the Podcast [caption id="attachment_385" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Vallarta Info.com DIY Page[/caption]   All right then, just go as I said to vallartainfo.com and check out JR’s new DIY Tours Page. El Arrayan Restaurant, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Now El Arrayan Restaurant. It was the last day of my Puerto Vallarta stay, I had made arrangements to meet Carmen at the restaurant about 30 minutes before her class that she was teaching for the day would begin to arrive. My plan was to get the interview and then stay to tape portions of her cooking class. [caption id="attachment_384" align="aligncenter" width="870"] JR's Map[/caption] El Arrayan is located in a real Mexican neighborhood, five blocks up from the Malecon. Using the Malecon as reference, where Calle Allende ends at the Malecon is the restaurant La Bodeguita de Medio and The Jazz Foundation. That is the place you start your walk up to El Arrayan, that is if you are walking. This morning I was hungry. I was coming from my apartment in El Cerro so I walked down Matamoros to Allende. On the corner of Matamoros and Allende, on Matamoros is the most amazing taco stand. Tacos de Birrea Alex. This place is always busy, day and night. A great tip from my buddy David Ostlund from Chef’s Pass Food Tours. Try it for sure. Buy a couple of tacos and sit on the curb and munch away like the locals do. [caption id="attachment_360" align="alignleft" width="300"] Chilliqueles[/caption] I was looking for a quick bite and stopped into a little restaurant called PV. El Gran Olivo Mex. I was the only customer so I quickly scanned the menu and found what I was looking for, Chicken Chilaquiles. I ordered it along with a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. But there was a problem, they had no chicken. Before I could change my order, the waitress was out the door, off to buy some chicken. I was a little worried because well, I had an interview scheduled and didn’t want to be late. She reappeared minutes later with chicken breast for the cook so my anxiety level dropped down to almost normal. [caption id="attachment_364" align="alignright" width="300"] El Gran Olivo[/caption] The food was absolutely delicious. I have a picture of the plate of Chilaquiles in the post and shownotes for this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show, episode 15. The bill came and I was floored! 60 pesos. $3 US. So good! Tummy full, I walk back up Allende to El Arrayan. The front of the restaurant looks like a pink Hacienda. It is a stark contrast from the other buildings that surround it in this traditional Mexican neighborhood. As you open the large, heavy front door, you walk right in to a courtyard setting, open air with tree growing in the center. [caption id="attachment_418" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] El Array'an Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Photo by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] It is wonderfully described by my friend Constance, from Canada who was kind enough to let me borrow and read from her Trip Advisor review of El Arrayan. Here goes… For our last dinner in PV, I wanted to have cocina auténtica Mexicana. I was not worried about having a panoramic ocean view as both the condos that we stayed in had very [caption id="attachment_416" align="alignright" width="300"] El Array'an Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Photo by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] special bay views. I decided El Arrayán had the credits & reviews that promised a wonderful evening. I made reservations & asked to be seated in the garden. When, we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated at sweet little table for two under the Arrayán tree in the center of the courtyard. It really felt like a special date night.   I ordered a liquid appetizer: a Tangerine Mezcalita made with 100% Agave Mezcal from Oaxaca. Lovely & tart. For dinner, I ordered the DUCK ‘CARNITAS’ (200 GRS) The specialty of the House. 1/3 of a duck in one piece, Slowly cooked, Guajillo-orange-arrayán sauce with sautéed potatoes, zucchini, & carrots. My meal was perfectly cooked. The flavors were delightful. Only one fault, the potatoes were seriously over-salted.  My husband ordered the BEEF ‘BARBACOA’ (180 GRS)Steamed beef. Cooked in avocado leaf, plantain leaf & thyme. Served with Nopal cactus salad, and ‘borracha’ salsa. [caption id="attachment_362" align="alignleft" width="300"] El Arrayan, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico[/caption] Although, he enjoyed his meal. He said that next time we go to El Arrayán, he would order the duck carnitas as it was more exotic in flavor. The service was impeccable at this lovely restaurant. We both agreed that El Arrayán was the perfect place to enjoy our last evening in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. Last time I was in town, I had dinner with Constance and her husband  at Layla’s, another great place to eat, near the ocean on Calle Venezuela in the 5th of December neighborhood. So Constance knows good food, that’s for sure.   So thank you Constance for letting me share your review with my listeners. So without any further ado, lets get to the interview with Carmen Porras of El Arrayan Restaurant, in Puerto Vallarta Mexico…   [caption id="attachment_420" align="alignleft" width="300"] El Array'an Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Photo by Eduardo Solorzano[/caption] After the interview I filmed and recorded portions of the cooking class…..   Carmen was an amazing person and she and her partner Claudia do such a wonderful job, putting out the finest cooking in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. My sombreros off to you Carmen and Claudia. Visit El Arrayan and see for yourself. I have all the links to El Arrayan in my shownotes for this episode of the PVTS. The people of Vallarta await you with open arms. Take my word for it. This week I have a real treat for you guys but before I get to my guest, let’s see what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 9th of April, 2017. [caption id="attachment_105" align="alignleft" width="300"] Pay For Taxis Here[/caption] As you may or may not know, the Puerto Vallarta Airport is going through a remodeling process but my man on the ground Yael who works at the airport tells me that there are two of the Mexican Bank Affiliated ATM Machines up and running now in the airport lobby where you buy your travel voucher for your taxi or van to your hotel or lodging. That gonna make it easier to get your pesos when you land at the airport with your ATM debit card. For more information about money exchange and cell plans and what to expect when you arrive at the Puerto Vallarta Airport, you should listen to episodes 2 and 3 of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show where we talk about all of those important items and more so listen to the podcasts or read my shownotes to those shows. Now you listeners are really coming through with your great suggestions, your stories and questions all about Puerto Vallarta and I just want to say thanks! Thank you for reaching out to me with your positive feedback and really thoughtful suggestions. First, another great review on iTunes. Those reviews really help me get to word out about Puerto Vallarta so please keep them coming in. Give us a Good Review on iTunes! I got an email from John who is coming in June with his Fiance and he wanted to know what to expect. I talked with our next guest about that subject so John, if you are listening, I have an answer for you coming up soon from our guest, and let’s get to him right now. You know that I’m always asking you my listeners for your suggestions and stories right? Well our next guest did just that. He reached out to me and told me his story and I just had to bring him to you. His name is Steven Tenney and he is from New Jersey. Just love his accent I gotta say. Steven is a musician, he is a drummer for the Group Tequila Rush. Now the Group Tequila Rush   was created in 2015 by Carlos Urrea and Carlos came up with the name, he is the band leader, plays guitar and sings and  Danny Hermosillo who plays the bass and sings as well and Steven rounds out the trio. The group was created  as a trio for clubs and private parties around the bay area and they play year round. They don’t stop for the summer months. They play classic, and contemporary rock as well as wide selection of Spanish lyric Rock to cater to a domestic audience as too. They like to think of themselves as a “Music of your life” kind of group. Both Carlos and Danny are from Guadalajara and live in Puerto Vallarta and although I didn’t get a chance to talk with them, I hope to sit with them when I get into town next month and hear from them what they like to do in and around Puerto Vallarta.  Now Steven is going to come on and tell us a little about some places to go dancing and listen to music and party all along the Bahia de Banderas. And he is going to tell us about some places I didn’t know even existed. NATURAL BEAUTY AND GREAT FOOD AND THE FRUIT TASTES LIKE IT DID WHEN I WAS A KID. After graduating from Fairfax high school, Russ studied drama at Los Angeles City College. He returned to the music industry and with friends recorded a song entitled ‘Just A Little Touch Of Your Love’.
