Brad and Jake dive into the cinematic highlights of 2018. They kick off with "mid90s," Jonah Hill's directorial debut that vividly brings to life the raw skateboarding scene of 1990s Los Angeles through the eyes of a troubled boy. The journey continues with "Hereditary," Ari Aster's haunting horror film that masterfully intertwines family drama with spine-tingling terror. Brad and Jake dissect these distinct films, wondering what will become of Hill's directing career, and whether Aster's film might be better watched through a more realistic lens than a supernatural one. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Murder by Death (1976), Dogtooth (2009), Inherent Vice (2014), Tangerine (2015), Manchester by the Sea (2016), First Reformed (2017), The Florida Project (2017), Annihilation (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), Ben is Back (2018), Blindspotting (2018), Burning (2018), Can You Ever Forgive Me? Attention, all you fast-talkin', wisecrackin' cinephiles, 'cause Never Did It's warping back to 1940, the year screwball met satire and Cary Grant met a tiny mustache. Jake's tossed Brad into the whirlwind of overlapping dialogue and rapid-fire romance that is "His Girl Friday," while Brad's sent Jake on a goose chase for Chaplin's timeless, toe-tapping takedown of tyranny in "The Great Dictator." First up, Brad's wrangling with Rosalind Russell's Hildy Johnson, a reporter sharper than a stiletto and quicker than a quip. Get ready for a newsroom brawl of epic proportions as Hildy tries to break free from her ex-husband Walter (Cary Grant, smooth as ever) and his journalistic clutches. Think witty repartee, slapstick hijinks, and enough deadlines to make your head spin. Brad might even confess his secret soft spot for the 1974 remake, "The Front Page," and spark a friendly debate about cinematic legacy! Meanwhile, Jake's navigating the Chaplinverse! He's donned the oversized pants and tiny hat of Adenoid Hynkel, the bumbling would-be Hitler with a penchant for pratfalls. Prepare for hilarious political satire, poignant social commentary, and enough double takes to give your neck a workout. Can Hynkel conquer the inflatable globe? Will Hildy make it to the altar? Tune in, but remember that back in 1940, the laughs were just as sharp as the suits, and the dictators were just as small as their hats. So polish your best one-liners, dust off your bowler hats, and get ready for a comedic collision of the highest order. Hit play and let the good times roll (or topple)! Other movies dicussed in this episode: To Catch a Thief (1955), Charade (1963), The Front Page (1974), All the President's Men (1976), Buddy Buddy (1981), The Iron Lady (2011), Spotlight (2015), Ricky and the Flash (2015), The Post (2017), Let Them All Talk (2020).

We take a look at "The Human Voice", Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's short, sharp take on Jean Cocteau's 1928 drama, with a luminous, grief-stricken Tilda Swinton in the leading role. Film critic Lisa Nesselson then tells us why Steven Soderbergh's latest release "Let Them All Talk", starring Meryl Streep, is an entertaining watch and an impressive feat in the form of a lightning-fast film shoot.

“What have you been watching?” “See anything good lately?” are questions many of us routinely ask each other, especially during the pandemic. A trusted recommendation for a movie and, for some of us even better, a series with many seasons is cause to celebrate.  How often, though, do you hear of a good movie or series about, for, or by older women? Not often. So when we heard about the film “Let Them All Talk” at the end of 2020, we asked book agent Malaga Baldi, Debbie Zimmerman who heads Women Make Movies and Emmy-nominated former TV producer and wellness and lifestyle coach Renata Joy to join us for a conversation about it and other films and series featuring older women. Two Old Bitches, Joanne and Idelisse, call them geriatric rom-coms. You know the ones we mean. “Something’s Gotta Give,”(Diane Keaton), “It’s Complicated” (Meryl Streep), “Book Club” (Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candace Bergen, Mary Steenburgen), “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (Judy Dench and Maggie Smith) and a number of others sprinkled over the past two decades. Too many of them are not very good. “Why is that?” the five of us wondered. We have some answers and laughs we’d like to share with you, as well as a list of films and series we recommend.  And, we enjoyed doing this so much that we plan to do it again.

It's not just where we're from but possibly who we become. Is the "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" full of caricatures? What does it mean to "look Jewish"? And why "Let Them All Talk" is a deeply Jewish — and pandemic-relatable — film, even though it features non-Jewish women on a cruise. 40 Years a PrisonerThis doc, directed by Tommy Oliver and available now on HBO Max.It posts a celeb lineup of producers, including The Roots, Common, and John Legend.40 Years a prisoner tells the sorry of the 1978 police raid on a peaceful group of hippies, mostly young, mostly African American, living in a house in the Powellton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 1978, Philadelphia's mayor and former police commissioner Frank Rizzo ran the city.He tried to starve the group out of its home, preventing food and water from getting into the house using barricades.  He sent in more than 600 cops armed with automatic rifles, armored vehicles, and bulldozers when that failed. Still, the MOVE members refused to "move." They hid in their basement. In response, Rizzo and the PPD pumped 250,000 gallons of water and teargas into the Move house's basement. Ultimately bullets started flying, resulting in the death of police officer James Ramp.Nine adult Move members were dragged out of the house– five men and four women. One, Delbert Africa was savagely beaten by a group of police, his jaw broken by the butt of a rifle. All nine were convicted and sentenced to 30 years to life.Rizzo quotes:“The police will be in there to drag them out by the backs of their necks. They are going to go either the easy or hard way, either standing up or lying down.” “Get the death penalty back, put them in the electric chair, and I'll pull the switch.”But this doc isn't so much about Rizzo or the cops or what happened in 1978 (and the rest of the MOVE story.) This is the story of Mike Africa Jr and his parents Debbie and Mike Sr who were members of The Move Nine who were arrested during that raid on trumped-up charges and convicted before he was born.Mike Jr was born in a jail cell and ow in his early 40's has never spent a moment with his parents outside of prison walls. Also, on HBOMax, Let Them All Talk was not what we were expecting!  We feared it was going to be yet another movie about people of a "certain age," starring some of the greatest actors of their generation reduced to cute or quirky old folks on one last adventure. We were pleasantly surprised by this story by directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Deborah Eisenberg. It boasts a top-notch cast led by Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest, and Candice Bergen with a stand out performance by Lucas Hedges. The film also features one of our fav actors from Humans, Gemma Chan.Listen to the show to hear more about this unique, quirky movie and how it was made.
