This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Metal Church – “Ton Of Bricks” from The Dark (1986)Hot Water Music – “Trademark” from Fuel For The Hate Game (1997)Love/Hate – “Blackout In The Red Room” from Blackout In The Red Room (1990)The Baboon Show – “Gold” from God Bless You All (2022)Grave Digger – “Hymn Of The Damned” from The Living Dead (2018)The Distillers – “Die On A Rope” from Coral Fang (2003)Asomvel – “Born To Rock ‘n' Roll” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Her newest effort, Big Dog, written with longtime collaborator Duncan Hay Jennings is due out March 25th via Sub Pop Records.  Bria shares her early relationship with music, how Brody Dalle inspired her to start writing songs and why a guitar teacher caused her to subsequently set the guitar down for 6 years. She tells us why Big Dog is a natural progression from Cuntry Covers, why having vocal coach Meg Remy in the recording sessions was so valuable and how the idea of permanence played a role in her studio performance. He tells Tom about how his first guitar teacher taught him polka, why he wanted to play Let's Dance at Taylor Hawkins tribute concert, and how he reflects on his spirituality after facing so many hardships.

Tina Swithin, survivor, author and family court advocate, joins Amanda and Jenna in today's episode to talk about the confounding decision some family court judges are making to force traumatized and abused children to see or even live with their abusive parents. Utilizing something called Family Reunification Camps, these judges order already terrified children to be forcibly removed from a protective parent's home and sent to a facility where they're isolated, abused and gaslighted into believing the abuse they just recently escaped from never happened at all and that the parent they saw beat their mom is real sorry about that. Sweet! It recently happened to the children of Josh Homme, accused abuser of his wife Brody Dalle. Homme, vocalist/guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age and drummer for Eagles of Death Metal. Though he threatned to kill his wife, among other atrocities, and despite Dalle testifying that Homme had hit the children, drove drunk with them and that they were scared to be with him, his two young sons were forcibly removed from their home and haven't seen their mom in over a year. Not shockingly, abusers who insist on having custody of their kids who are terrified of them is a power move by abusers to punish and control their partners, and not about these a-holes being any kind of decent parent. And since our criminal justice system was largely built by men to benefit men, these legalized kidnappings track. But that doesn't mean they have to continue. Thanks to the efforts of tireless advocates like Swithin, we're hoping these so-called “camps” will disappear into the ether very soon.   Find Swithin at One Mom's Battle or @OneMomsBattle on Instagram or TikTok. Quick content warning: Plouffe notes at the beginning of the episode that the lyrical content of the album features talk of sexual assault and suicide. On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Plouffe's next pick, The Distillers Coral Fang. Their third studio album, and only major label release, Coral Fang came out in 2003 to positive critical reviews. Stradling the line between punk and grunge music, the album produced three singles, two of which charted. The tour supporting the album went from 2003 to 2004 and when it ended, the band never released another studio album. Some controversy ensued because the album was recorded and released in the midst frontwoman Brody Dalle's divorce from her then husband, Tim Armstrong, the frontman for the punk band Rancid. Speculation swirled in both the media and the fanbases for both The Distillers and Rancid as to whether the album was about the divorce. The album was released with two different covers, one the original artwork by Tim Presley, and another 'safe' artwork which was sanitized for sale in stores such as Walmart. Will the boys stir up controversy with their verdicts? Come along and find out!

We kicked episode 6 with a track called ‘Burning For You' a cover of a great track by Blue Öyster Cult, very well done here by Iced Earth.  The show then got heavy with Killswitch Engage and Annihilator,  with ‘Desperate Times' and 'Set the World On Fire' respectively.   Both of these fall into the TSORR Songs that could be about South Africa category.  Accept and Sinner gave us a taste of German metal and then we had Thundermother out of Sweden.  There was a great little SA music segue early in the show where we checked out Jack Hammer Band with a pre-released track called 'As I Turn Away' and then a band out of Sekunda called Pilgrim South.  Their new track 'Old Man Moonshine went down well.  From there we were into familiar territory with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Def Leppard.  my love affair with Def Leppard's Mutt Lange produced Hi 'N' Dry album continues, we listened to 'Lady Strange'. Manic Street Preachers and a new-ish band I am not too familiar with called St. Aurora changed the pace a bit and then we started to delve into this week's Ultimate Challenge, 4 albums released in 1980 and you can only choose one.  The albums selected were Judas Priest - British Steel, Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Motörhead -  Ace of Spades, and ACDC - Back in Black.  the votes came in but in the end, it was one-way traffic with the winner of this week's Ultimate Challenge going to Back In Black.  The Immortal track was Gun ‘n' Roses with Estranged and we kept our punk confined to the USA with Iggy Pop, The Distillers, and Weezer.  I had some problems with Brody Dalle squashed in the middle.  This week I discovered Doomsday Outlaw, this track called ' Is This The End of Everything' features the kind of guitar tone and phrasing that I absolutely love.  Talking guitar, a track off the new Winery Dogs with Richie Kotzen, Bily Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy hit the stop.  Girish and the Chronicles are just simply blazing, what a band.  We ended heavy with Ablaze My Sorrow off their new EP, and Phantom Days by Dark Tranquility.  Oh, one last thing TSORR made No 12 on the list of top 35 Rock Podcasts on the planet, check it out right here:https://blog.feedspot.com/rock_and_roll_podcasts/?feedid=5328472Artists Featured:  Iced Earth, Killswitch Engage, Annihilator, Bullets & Octane, Deaf Havana, Accept, Thundermother, Five Finger Death Punch, Sinner, Theory of a Deadman, The Cult, Alabama 3, Godsmack, Ozzy Osbourne, Jack Hammer Band, Pilgrim South, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Def Leppard, Adrenaline Mob, Manic Street Preachers, St. Aurora, Black Sabbath, Dan Patlansky, Hinder, Motörhead, Winery Dogs, Black Veil Brides, Guns ‘n' Roses, Iggy Pop, The Distillers, Weezer, Doomsday Cowboy, Girish & the Chronicles, ACDC, Ablaze My Sorrow, Dark TranquillityThe Story of Rock and Roll. Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it's a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you

Episode 39 of Season 5 went out live at 7 pm sharp on 29 Sept 2022.  As usual, the show was hosted by Rebel Rock Radio.  We got going with Jorn and a track called 'Some Day They Will Put Out the Sun', it was agreed that if it was in Soth Africa it would have been out long ago, or broken, or lost.  Next up Hell Fire out of San Fransisco, a truly wonderful band with a track called Cities Ablaze off their 2nd album called Free Again.  From there a bit Sevendust with ‘Black' and Last In Line with ‘Already Daed' with Vivian Campbell playing like he used to in Dio, which is fitting as they are Dio but without Ronnie James Dio.   We went back to the early '70s circa 71/72 and listened to Mott The Hoople Cover the Lou Reed classic ‘Sweet Jane', which led to Neil Young's ‘Sugar Mountain', sweet thing geddit?  A new track from Billy Idol off his new EP The Cage went down well, as did a new track off Ozzy Osbournes latest album Patient #9.  We listened to 'Immortal' featuring Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCreedy.  Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan in Mr Big reminded us just how well bass and lead can fit together.   We took another new track off Five Finger Death Punch's latest album AfterLife.  Germany got a look in with Die Toten Hosen and ‘Alles Wir Gut'.  We carried on with last week's discovery, a band called Sumerlands, and then went off in a classic rock direction with 'Riders On the Storm' specially dedicated to one of TSORR's much-appreciated listeners ho lost a family member this week :-(. We had tracks from The Stranglers and The Jam, it's just punk by virtue of the time the bands were formed and their history but I consider them truly iconic rock bands.  The ladies were represented by Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers with ‘The Hunger' and The Donna's and a track called ‘Who Invited You'.  The South African stuff came from When Angels Came, Francois Van Coke, and Fire Horses.  After that, we checked out the debut album from My Chemical Romance and a track called 'Headfirst For Halos' which is really cool.  We finished heavy with In Flames, Arch Enemy and Slayer. Artists featured:  Jorn, Hell Fire, Sevendust, Tremonti, Last In Line, Mott The Hoople, Neil Young, Mr Big, Tygers of Pan Tang, Rush, Billy Idol, Black Spiders, Alice In Chains, Bush, Anvil Black Veil Brides, Die Toten Hosen, Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, Sumerlands, Rob Zombie, The Doors, Live, The Stranglers, The Jam, Parkway Drive, Venom, The Donna's, The Distillers, When Angels Came, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, in Flames, Arch Enemy, Slayer

Episode 39 of Season 4 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio, incredible how the year is flying past!  We kicked off with 'The Mob Rules' brilliantly covered by Adrenaline Mob.  The track came off a tribute to Ronnie James Dio album called This is Your Life.  It set the show off to a blistering start.  It fell to Alice Cooper and Slash's Snakepit to pick up the pieces.  Slash features on both tracks.  From there we were into some Gospel music from Stryper and some not gospel music from Mötley Crüe.  There was a bit of early '80s stuff then we went to Seattle to check out solo work from Stone Gossard and Jerry Cantrell of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains respectively. One of the show highlights for me was a 3 song bit featuring SA bands spanning nearly 40 years.  We went from a new band in Cape Town called Image&Nation with a track called 'Rivers and Dreams' back to the mid-'80s and a recording I have of The Diamond Dogs, to AKing out of Bellville featuring half of Fokofpolisiekar.  We also checked out the power of Dean Smith, an ex-South African responsible for pioneering some serious SA Metal, and his new album released as Deangersmith.  The album is called Lead Us to Your Taker (Disarm the Corrupt) and the track was called 'Buckle My Shoe'. In the last hour we got heavy with Hatebreed and Testament then commercial with Nickelback and Bon Jovi ( yes I said the N-word), and played out with some classic ACDC, Judas Priest, and show closer 'Gypsy Lee Rose' from Brody Dalle's outfit The Distillers.  I Ran out of time as usual.  I was so busy I totally forgot to play the new Guns 'n' Roses track, which tells you something about a few things.  Artists featured: Adrenaline Mob, Alice Cooper, Slash's Snakepit, Stryper, Triumph, Texas Hippie Coalition, Black Star Riders, Sebastian Bach, Mötley Crüe, Stone Gossard, Jerry Cantrell, Biters, Kid Rock, Frank Marino, Rory Gallagher, Rival Sons, Black Stone Cherry, Dangerous Toys, My Chemical Romance, Seether, Image&Nation, The Diamond Dogs, AKing, Deangersmith, Testament, Hatebreed, Serj Tankian, The Stranglers, Queensrÿche, ACDC, The LA Maybe, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, The Distillers.

Episode 22 of season 4 was recorded at 7 pm on 3 June 2021.  It did not air due to the collapsing infrastructure in South Africa.  A continuous spate of load shedding, almost 12 hours in my area , in the last 24 hours has led to the cell phone tower batteries running down and thus no internet to send out the show.  Fortunately, the podcast is here to make sure that you get your weekly dose of music that matters.  The show kicked off with Axel Rudi Pell and a track called 'Gunfire'.  We followed with Black Sabbath and  'Tomorrow's Dream' which at the moment is looking like a nightmare.  It is very easy to go off on a tirade about this so I will resist but just know that as relaxed as the show may sound I am in a constant war with wifi throughout.  I even set up a whole separate router system during the show which didn't work either.I played Beatallica which is a very odd mash-up of The Beatles and Metallica, it sounds ridiculous I know but just listen to it, the guy has Hetfield down to a T.  I played another Sinner track off There Will  Be Execution, really enjoying the band, I paid tribute to the amazing Francois Van Coke and celebrated his fantastic victory over rugby star Derick Hougaat last Saturday.  Rock gave rugby a lekker klap, we took a listen to Fokofpolisiekar with 'Tygerberg Vliegtuig' to celebrate.  Then it was time for some UK punk in the form of the Sex Pistols with 'Holidays in the Sun' and The Clash.  Another notable mention was that it's 10 years to the day that I was in Germany for Rock Im Park.  We took a listen to Avenged Sevenfold and Bring Me The Horizon to mark that momentous event.  It's 2 years since Piet Botha passed and I played 'Die Gemmerbroodman' and told you a little bit about who I had been told that song is about.  Incidentally on my iTunes copy of Die Mamba Piet Botha is called 'Pie Botha' so if you are living in another country and have the album, his name was Piet........not Pie.  I played the brand new Buckcherry called 'Hellbound' and I went on yet another big gushy rave about Sunken State.  It has been a long time since I have been as excited about a band as I am with SA's own Sunken State.  The album gets released on 11 June.   We wound up with The Parlotones and 'Disappear Without a Trace'  because that is how the future in SA feels right now and we said happy birthday to Charlie Watts by playing 'Street Fighting Man' and closed out by continuing the love affair with Brody Dalle and The Distillers with a track called 'Seneca Falls'.  Adios amoebas, check you next week.    Artists featured:  Axel Rudi-Pell, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Bush, Keel, Seether, Sinner, Ratt, The Winery Dogs, 12th Avenue, Rammstein, Type O Negative, ACDC, Aerosmith, Beatallica, Machine Head, The Band, Matthew Goode Band, Fokofpolisiekar, Sex Pistols, the Clash, Piet Botha, ZZ Top, Avenged Sevenfold, Bring Me the Horizon, Hollywood Vampires, Buckcherry, Mark Morton, Greta Van Fleet, Halford, Iron Maiden, Sunken State, The Parlotones, The Rolling Stones, the Distillers.

Episode 11 of season 4 aired on 18 March 2021 amidst national load shedding and general chaos from power outages.  It had an effect on the show with people having to drop out continually.  The broadcast itself wasn't affected but it's a real fucking pain.  We had a mellow start for a change with Rainbow and ' Catch the Rainbow' and then followed with The Wizard, the 1972 classic from Uriah Heep.  After that, it got a bit rowdier with Q5 and Slash.  It was great to hear Tank and Savage, the two invoking some good early '80's NWOBHM memories.  We paid tribute to Brisbane as Brissie has overtaken everyone as the greatest supporters of TSORR.   I am deeply grateful for the support.  In deference, we played Airbourne and The Screaming Jets and then later we some Jimmy Barnes and The Lazy's.  From there we went all over the place from The Police to Kreator, Marianne Faithful to W.A.S.P, and then some SA rarities in the form of Kobus! and Blue Scream.  There was plenty of punk with Anti-Flags 'Wake Up!' and The Distillers with L.A. Girl, which makes it about 4 weeks in a row of the wonderful Brody Dalle.  There was a nice little bit of nostalgia where we took in 3 tracks from albums released in 2006, I had good memories of MTV days at between 4 and 6 in the morning.   The highlight for me was Rammstein with 'Mehr' and Alice Cooper's new track 'Hanging By a Thread', I enjoyed the Little Steven track as well. Artists featured:  Rainbow, Uriah Heep, Q5, Kiss, Volbeat, Slash, Tank, Savage, Rammstein, Airbourne, The Screaming Jets, The Police, Marianne Faithful, Probot, Kreator, The Pretty Reckless, Lita Ford, Alice Cooper, Alice in Chains, Blue Scream, Kobus!, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Billy Talent, Anti-Flag, The Distillers, UK Subs, Guns 'n'  Roses, We Are Harlot, Jimmy Barnes, The Lazy's, W.A.S.P., Warrant, The Rolling Stones, Arch Enemy, Clutch, Little Steven, Tom Waits

Courtney Love’s acerbic lyricism breathed precious fresh air into a male-dominated genre. In the spirit of Hole’s Live Through This, Matt looks to two groups fronted and run by women with strong musical chops and even stronger voices confronting the, often stupid, men around them in love and their scenes. Justine Frischmann of Elastica and Brody Dalle of The Distillers bring fire and wit to Brit-pop and punk, respectively. Listen to hear which lands the heaviest knockout punch to the Patriarchy.

Hard to believe we are already 4 episodes into 2021, time flies when you are having fun.  This episode aired on 28 Jan 2021 at 7 pm so that's January in its poes :-).  We kicked off with 'Ride the Monkey'by Burning Rain and followed it with Sister Sin out of Gothenburg.  That got the lesser-known stuff out and on your airwaves and then we hit the ACDC and some W.A.S.P.  It was one of those shows where I wasn't getting any flow but then record-breaking numbers started tuning in and everything fell into place.  Highlights for me included rediscovering Bon Jovi's 'Wild As The Wind' and taking a listen to Body Counts 'Institutionalised 2014', not everyone's cup of tea but the lyrics are hilarious and if you've ever lost your e-mail password you'll relate.  The back to back Pantera to Sepultura worked for me and then The Clt with Heart of soul was like soothing water.  Another highlight was Dog detachment with 'The Last Laugh' what a song, the Armstrong brothers got that one right.  We also celebrated the discovery that uber rock chick Brody Dalle is single.  Black Label Society as always, ratchets up exponentially when Zakk hits the solo, what a player.  And speaking of players, Satriani in Chickenfoot is in a class of his own.  Artists featured:  Burning Rain, Sister Sin, ACDC, W.A.S.P. Edguy, Live, The White Stripes, The Color Blew, Mark Haze, Pantera, Sepultura, The Cult, Tesla, Gary Moore, Mötley Crüe, Ruff Majik, All Them Witches, The Distillers, the Wildhearts, Iron Maiden, Stiff Little Fingers, The Boomtown Rats, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dog Detachment, Black Label Society, The Diamond Dogs, Massive Wagons, Chickenfoot, Megadeth, Body Count, Staind, The Answer, Bon Jovi, Rush, Sugardrive, Nazareth, Rory Gallagher.

As the legendary front-woman of the Runaways, Cherie Currie and her teen bandmates Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, and Jackie Fox exploded out of L.A. in 1975 and became the first American, all-girl rock band to make it big. She put out two studio albums and one live album with the Runaways and created an absolute frenzy in Japan before calling it quits in 1977. Since then, Currie has never stopped creating, putting out seven more studio albums as a solo artist, with her twin sister Marie, and more recently with Brie Darling from Fanny. And now, her new album, Blvds of Splendor—a tour de force featuring collabs with Billy Corgan, Slash, Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan, Juliette Lewis, Brody Dalle, and the Veronicas— is being unleashed on a world that desperately needs to rock and it’s a total winner. On this episode of BUST’s Poptarts podcast, she opens up about celibacy, chainsaws, communicating with ghosts, and more!

After last week’s vote ended in 100% of people agreeing that Mule Variations should go into the discography, we thought we’d return to punk and cover Sing Sing Death House by The Distillers. We also welcome back Anna Goldthorp! The Distillers only released 3 albums in their career, and people generally tend to look more favourably on their 3rd (and to date, final) album Coral Fang. But this week Anna and Mark are here to argue Sing Sing Death House is not only unsung but also the band’s best record. On this episode, aside from going into the band’s limited back catalogue, we spend a good chunk of time talking about how influential Brody Dalle is, why The Distillers were an important band in the early 00s, and her legacy. As we’re now recording remotely, we’re still sorting out a few things on the audio side, so this episode may sound a little strange in places. Sing Sing Death House - unsung classic? You decide.

Episode 43 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at the stroke of midnight on 8 November 2019.  We were straight into it with a brand new release by Airbourne, who were referred to as “the thinking man's ACDC” by a quick witted listener.  The pace stayed right where it was all the way through Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson and Iron Maiden.  Next we hit a short blast of Punk with the amazing Brody Dalle before going off to the movies for a few tracks.   Speculation is rife that we will get to see KISS in July next year so we took a listen to them.  The highlight of the show for me was taking a listen to Metallica's  ‘The Four Horsemen'.  It's amazing how refreshing that track sounded and it was a great reminder of just how cutting edge they were back in 1983.  The speakers in the studio are really good so I got to hear it properly at about one thirty a.m. and had the speakers glowing red by the end of the show.  It must be really cool to be driving a big truck through the night and to have that track come over the airwaves like a fucking super nova.  After a false start we got our weekly dose of Cold Chisel and we also got to hear one of those bands you can't play on the radio. Artists featured in this episode include:  ZZ Top, My Chemical Romance, Sugar Drive, Airbourne, The Mayfield Four, Kiss, Badlands, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, Metallica, The Distillers, Marilyn Manson, Foo Fighters, Guns ‘n' Roses, Northward, Steel Panther, The Drop Kick Murphy's, Halford, Cold Chisel, Stone Temple Pilots, Oasis, Def Leppard, Hinder, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden as well as Mick Jagger & Dave Stewart.

The Skies Above – The Equals Eddy “Electric Avenue” Grant was the leader of this group, and this is one of his more arresting, freaked out songs. B-Side of the 1968 single, “I Get So Excited.” Ghetto Love – Spinnerette Spinnerette is headed by Brody Dalle, a pillar of punk rock in the 90’s who then slipped into synth-pop for a while. This track came from the sole record the group produced. Gasoline Alley – Dave Grusin Heard in the 1969 racing movie “Winning”, this song was one of the groovy staples on the soundtrack. Nothin’ in the World Can Stop Me Worryin’ Bout That Girl – The Kinks One of the more undiscovered Kinks classics, the song didn’t get played a lot when it came out, but resurged when Wes Anderson used it for the pool scene in “Rushmore”. All Night Long – The Mavericks This is the first song off the Mavericks new 2015 album “Mono”, and is a sexy salsa tune that has influences of Latin pop, rock and the unique sound that this band brings. Down In Mexico – The Coasters As this unmistakable 1957 tune proves, nobody ever combined doo-wop, R&B and a sense of humor quite like The Coasters did. Shrinking Violet – Kinny Off the 2009 album, “Can’t Kill A Dame With Soul”, a soulful, dirty groove anthem. Viol – Gesaffelstein After listening to over three-hundred tracks, we finally selected this driving beat from French DJ, Gesaffelstein as the theme for the new Turtle Wax campaign. Free your soul, baby! Wolverton Mountain – Claude King Coming from the collaborative efforts of King and Merle Kilgore, this 1962 hit is pure country corn.
