While Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass might be dated now, it was certainly controversial 15 years ago. It's jammed with violence and bad language...and many of those naughty words come out of the mouth of an 11-year-old girl. But it's also a story about a young nobody who becomes a star on social media and goes on to save his city from very bad guy. Take away that he DOES become a superhero and this movie IS our current culture. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the title character and he's about as average as he always is, but Chloe Grace Moretz is fantastic as the merciless Hit-Girl. And while Kick-Ass' Big Bad, Mark Strong, is just okay and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is nothing special as Kick-Ass' friend/foil, Nicolas Cage has a phenomenal time playing Moretz's vengeful dad. And even though Vaughn's adaption of the comic book is colourful and often fun as it explores the theme of "what if a regular kid tried to be a superhero", it doesn't really deliver on that promise. Each episode superhero authors, T.L. Heinrich and Jeremy Flagg rate comics and novels for the Pull List and present shows and movies for listeners to Geek Out over. For this episode’s Deep Dive, they’re delving into the latest Marvel television the Falcon and Winter Soldier to discuss the good, the bad, and the missed opportunities. Geekorama is Produced by Superhero-Fiction.com https://www.superhero-fiction.com THE PULL LIST Jeremy - The Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons One of the most iconic graphic novels ever made, The Watchmen remains undecided on if it is genius or garbage. After having a few years between readings I returned and found myself extremely captivated by its less than idealistic heroes. It demonstrates that even the best meaning people are tempted to darkness and we are ultimately left asking, "In the dawning of the superhero, who watches the Watchmen?" It's a behemoth of a book, but despite the slow pace, I give it a 5 out of 5 Capes. Warning: There is a rape scene that is brutally candid and pulls no punches making it more disturbing than many. Trish - Forever Never by Lucy Score Though not a superhero novel or even a genre novel, this book is hands down one of the steamiest, most awesome romance novels I’ve ever read. It’s safe to say that Lucy Score is easily one of the best contemporary romance authors out there today. I learned A LOT about writing romance in general just from reading her books. Five out of Five capes. If you want more book suggestions stop by www.Superhero-Fiction.com and read our editorial reviews. GEEK OUTS Trish - To celebrate the premier of season six of DC Legends, I’m rewatching the show starting from the very first episode, or at least I was until my husband suggested we skip to the last episode of season one. It’s been really fun to watch these characters at the beginning of their journey knowing where they will end up. Although I do miss the weird and wonderful craziness of the later seasons. Jeremy - Shadow in the Cloud starring Chloe Grace Moretz Filmed prior to lockdown, this movie not only embodies the horrors of flying at 20,000 feet, but what can be done with a compelling storyline and a minimalist set. While some of the action (and wow, questionable motivation) is just flat out laughable, Moretz delivers an emotional performance that manages to rely almost entirely on her own abilities. Definitely something to check out if you’re not worried about some questionable moments in your period piece action film. Deep Dive - Falcon & Winter Soldier Trish - I thought that overall it was a good show. The chemistry between Bucky and Sam was wonderful and complex. I loved how they showed Bucky’s struggle with rebuilding his life and making amends. And how Sam was trying to wrap his head around what it meant to be Captain America while also trying to catch up to life after coming back from the blip. I didn’t like the treatment of Sharon Carter or US Agent’s character. Carter was flat, one dimensional and dull. I feel that what they did was a betrayal of who the character was in the comics and who she was set up in the films to be. She didn’t even get to tell us her emotions or feelings because everyone else around her did that. US Agent had potential but his character arc was muddled and without clear direction. The character of Isaiah Bradley was a heartbreaking, amazing stand out played to beautiful perfection by Carl Lumbly. He has two of the best, most gut wrenching scenes in the entire show and brings up the ugly things white Americans don’t want to be cognizant of in our own history. It was the best performance of the show. Jeremy - Is the U.S. Agent single? Cause, I have me a new man crush. Overall I was a huge fan of this because of the underlying social commentary and the logistics approach to what happened after the events of End Game. Sam and Bucky are the married couple we all crave and as their relationship blooms, you almost wonder if they’re secretly dating off screen. But there are some pacing issues that radically undermine the show. The plight of the original black Captain America is such an impactful moment mixed with heartache and fury, it is cut short by a tidy resolution. The same can be said for the rise and fall of U.S. Agent and Sharon Carter. It feels like a few episodes were knocked off for no real reason and it left a mixed taste in my mouth. I feel the writing (which got ham stringed after a near perfect WandaVision) is rushed and inconsistent which seems to run counter to much of Marvel’s master plan. But with that being said, it’s a great watch and I’d gladly sit through the whole season again. But seriously, is U.S. Agent single... You know you're in for trouble right at the start, when the pigeons begin rapping. Tim Story's Tom and Jerry opens to the strains of A Tribe Called Quest's classic “Can I Kick It?” as the camera swoops over the New York City skyline and finds Tom relaxing between subway cars and Jerry looking at rental properties with a shady rat real-estate agent. (“Wait till you see the next place. It just screams ‘Mouse House.' Wait, can I say that?”) Ignore the anachronism of lyrics like “Mr. Dinkins, will you please be my mayor?” — the idea here is presumably to situate Tom and Jerry in a modern-day version of the city. Maybe the filmmakers were just trying to cash in on the Secret Life of Pets gravy train, but it also makes some narrative sense: After all, the city is full of cats tasked with catching mice, in bodegas and apartments and even some movie theaters. But look, this is already way too much work to do for a Tom and Jerry movie. A cluttered, awkward, pandering mess, Tom and Jerry (which debuts on HBO Max today) is a good example of what happens when the filmmakers don't understand (or maybe just forget) what made their subject exciting in the first place. The classic Tom and Jerry cartoons were engines of wordless slapstick joy: fast, clever, and fun. While they have certainly gone through many iterations over the decades and are maybe not as well-regarded today — with little of the surreal inventiveness of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner, or the wiseass narrative intricacy of Bugs Bunny & Co. — their thundering bluntness retains a primal cinematic appeal. (Besides, for all the show's simplicity, you could spend hours arguing over who was the good guy and who was the bad guy: the craven Tom, with his Sisyphean drive, or that ever-triumphant teacher's pet Jerry.) A nightly newsletter for the best of New York SIGN UP FOR ONE GREAT STORY Anyway, you'd think that a new Tom and Jerry feature film would prioritize the part where, you know, the cat chases the mouse. You would be wrong. Story's film sidelines its title characters to focus on the efforts of Kayla (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young woman who loses her bicycle delivery job and then lies her way into a gig at a fancy hotel as it prepares for “the wedding of the century” between two celebrity influencer types, Preeta (Pallavi Sharda) and Ben (Colin Jost). Kayla immediately draws the suspicions of the hotel's ambitious, snooty event manager Terence Mendoza (Michael Peña), even as she becomes friendly with the soon-to-be-weds. When Jerry wreaks havoc in the hotel's fancy kitchen and strikes fear in the hearts of management on the eve of the big day (“If a picture of this mouse is tweeted to the InstaBookFace, or the Ticky Tock, we will be ruined!”), the resourceful but out-of-her-element Kayla hires Tom to catch Jerry. For about ten minutes, at least. Tom and Jerry the film seems interested in just about everything but Tom and Jerry, with its elaborate (but somehow still totally half-assed) plot and its scenes of nonstop talk that pile unfunny jokes atop one another. These aren't bad actors: Moretz was once one of our most promising young performers, and Peña is among our most versatile. But they've clearly been directed to exaggerate wildly, perhaps in an effort to match the cartoons they're acting against. The result is a kind of gathering desperation, as if by making bigger facial expressions or talking faster the actors might be able to will laughs out of lines like “I'll catch it, sir. Him. Or her. It could be a female. I'm not gender-biased.” (Still, it could be worse. Even as everyone else hams it up, the stone-faced Colin Jost drifts through the film, seemingly asking himself the very question that is also on the audience's minds: Why is Colin Jost even in this movie?) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Directing duo Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan deliver a fresh animated take on the Addams Family as Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley and Uncle Fester square off against a crazed reality TV host. On July 17, 2009, longtime music video director Marc Webb dazzled with his debut feature film, 500 Days of Summer. Despite a flawed script and odd choices for the main character, this film still is fascinating. We discuss what it was like to relate to Tom in our 20s versus our 30s and the amazing performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. We are @decaderewind on Twitter. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
With several high-profile releases mere weeks from hitting the big screen, Rob decides to test a new concept in this week's episode. Rather than bringing on a guest to discuss a film of their choice, as normal, we take a look at the films hitting theaters throughout March 2019. It's that weird compromise between the relative dead period of the beginning of the year and the thick of the summer movie season (which, these days, really starts in late April). This month, Captain Marvel is set to take flight, setting the stage for Avengers: Endgame. Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele deliver another disturbing horrorshow with Us. And many more! Before we begin to face a deluge of major Hollywood films arriving in the months ahead, let's relish in the chance to focus on the few true highlights coming out in March. Like this idea? Let us know! We're considering a monthly special episode focusing on the month ahead. So now's your chance to have your voice heard. Which March 2019 film are you most looking forward? Sound off in the comments or reach out to us on social media with your thoughts. Plus, it's never too late to stake your claim for April as well. Contact us with your thoughts, and we might even include your comment in an upcoming episode. SHOW NOTES Want to appear on a future episode of the Crooked Table Podcast? Happy Valentine's Day! This time we tore apart the 2009 movie "(500) Days of Summer," an overly-stylized hipster attempt at an anti-romantic comedy. You can't spell parenthetical without pathetic. This is one of the most pretentious movies in the last ten years. They bounce back and forth between timelines for no reason, make obvious literary, music, art, and film references to try and seem smart, and they even have films-within-the-film to seem clever. It also hits the annoying montage trifecta: a sadness montage, a redemption montage, and a post-coital-skipping-around-super-happy montage. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom Hansen, man-boy who works as a writer at a greeting card company, but secretly wants to be an architect, his true passion. Well, he only decides to be one when he's told to become one once by a hot chick. Zooey Deschanel play Summer Finn, a classic Manic Pixie Dream Girl who makes it perfectly clear to this dude that she doesn’t want a serious relationship, and in a sense, is the real victim of this story—even though she’s made to be a pseudo-villain. Join as we discuss how this movie is weirdly racist against Chinese people for no reason and how it's another modern movie about Los Angeles a la "La La Land" where L.A. is showed in a clean and idealized old-timey way. Two children befriend one and another in this throat ripping coming of age story...wait what? In 2008 a small Swedish film based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist called Let the Right One In made quite the splash at film festivals and global cinemas. Two years later the newly resurrected Hammer films took interest and remade it for English speaking audiences starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Elias Koteas, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. While both films are quite similar, the changes made by Hammer make these films feel quite different.
