431: Behind the Sessions: Letting go of Guilt About Not Being Present in Postpartum

Today's episode explores a crucial topic that warrants our attention. We are discussing the after-effects of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and perinatal mental health conditions. The lingering sense of guilt, sadness, regret, grief, anger, and frustration comes as a result of feeling that you weren't present during the postpartum time. How much time does it take to “make up” for that time that you felt disconnected and anything but joyful about motherhood? Do you feel that you missed important milestones in your baby's life? All of these are important questions that many mothers wrestle with in a constant mental battle. Let's take a closer look. Show Highlights: Where does the unreasonable pressure come from? Are you punishing yourself? The truth: You WERE there in all the ways you could manage at the time. You do acts of love and caring, even if you don't feel like doing them. What you need now is what you needed then: compassion, support, and loving thoughts. Self-compassion brings gentleness into the picture. Healing needs to happen (and that means allowing yourself to grieve). Dr. Kat leads a healing exercise to try on your own. (Try it!) Your healing is valid and worthwhile, even if you can't see it yourself. ג' חלקים משיחת מוצש"ק פ' מטו"מ, מבה"ח מנחם-אב ה'תשל"ט ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-07-2025 Synopsis Regarding the borders of Eretz Yisroel (as discussed in shelishi of parashas Masei), Rashi in many places interprets the word gevul to mean meitzar (“limit”), such as in Bamidbar 34:2, where Rashi writes, “Since many mitzvos apply inside the Land and not outside the Land, it was necessary to write the boundaries (מצרני) of its surrounding borders on all sides etc.” Seemingly, we already find the term gevul in earlier verses, and Rashi offers no explanation. Similarly, parashas Yisro states, “Vehigbalta” (commanding the Jewish people to make a boundary around the mountain), yet Rashi doesn't see a need there to explain that it means “a boundary”? The explanation is as follows: In general, the primary meaning of gevul is not only the boundary, but the entire area contained within the boundary. Therefore, in the places in Devarim where you can't say that gevul refers to the whole area, Rashi explains that it refers only to the boundary itself. For example, on the verse, u'gevul yam (“and the sea boundary”), Rashi explains, “the western boundary,” because since the sea itself isn't part of Eretz Yisroel, you can't say that it refers to the entire area. Among the wondrous things contained in this Rashi: Rashi states that the mitzvos are tied to “the boundaries of its surrounding borders on all sides”: being that everything in the physical world descends from the spiritual realm, the question arises: if Hashem is unlimited, where do the limitations and boundaries in the world come from? The answer is that they come from the limits and boundaries of the mitzvos, as the Torah commands, “You shall not add nor diminish,” the fact that there are only four passages in the tefillin etc.3 excerpts from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos parashas Matos-Masei 5739 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-07-2025 לזכות מנוחה בת שיינא שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה כ"ח תמוזלשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

In this episode I'm joined by author and American wine icon, Karen MacNeil. We discuss her amazing career trajectory in wine from food stamps to international fame, and her new initiative, Come Over October, which is having enormous success in encouraging people to get together over a bottle of wine!   Karen is one of the foremost wine experts in the United States. She's the author of the award-winning book, "The Wine Bible," which has been recognized as "the most comprehensive and authoritative book on wine written by an American author."  Karen is the only American to have won every major wine award given in the English language -- the James Beard award for Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year, the Louis Roederer award for Best Consumer Wine Writing, and the International Wine and Spirits award as the Global Wine Communicator of the Year.   Recently, Karen teamed up with public relations and communications veterans Gino Colangelo and Kimberly Charles (the three are pictured above) to begin a program called Come Over October. Troubled by the disconnect in society due to the faster pace of life and the dominance of technology, these three saw a role for wine. They created Come Over October  to encourage friends, family, and colleagues to “come over” during the month of October and share some wine and a personal connection.   The show is mainly about Karen's road to success, and then we wrap with the concept of Come Over October , which I fully support!       Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   Check out my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access.  They have an amazing selection -- once you get hooked on their wines, they will be your go-to! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 23, 2025 is: logy • LOH-ghee • adjective Like sluggish and groggy, logy describes a person who is not able to think or move normally because of being tired, sick, etc., or something that moves slowly and ploddingly. // The heavy meal left me feeling logy and in need of a nap. See the entry > Examples: "The picture moves at a stately pace that one supposes was considered period-appropriate but feels merely logy at times." — Glenn Kenny, The New York Times, 15 May 2025 Did you know? The origins of the word logy (sometimes spelled loggy) likely lie in the Dutch word log, meaning "heavy," a relation of the ancient German adjective luggich, meaning "lazy." The word shares no history with the log of campfires, which is centuries older and has probable Scandinavian roots. Likewise, it has no etymological connection to groggy, which describes someone weak and unsteady on the feet or in action. That word ultimately comes from the nickname of an English admiral: "Old Grog," concerned with the health of his crew, served diluted rum to his sailors, who returned the favor by dubbing the rum mixture grog. (Modern grog is typically rum, or another liquor, cut with water and served warm, sweetened, and with lemon.)

A person struggling with parnasah wakes up each morning hoping that today will be different—that this will be the day when everything turns around. He puts in a full day's work, makes phone calls, attends meetings, and develops new strategies. He pushes himself to his limits—but the income still doesn't come. The bills pile up, each one adding more weight to his already heavy heart. And in quiet moments, he wonders: Is Hashem seeing how much I'm struggling? He opens his siddur and begins to pray, like a child pleading with his father: "I'm doing everything I can. Please help me. Please give me parnasah ." One thing is certain: Hashem—and only Hashem—determines how much parnasah a person will receive. If someone has prayed with all his heart and has not yet seen the results, this does not mean he should give up on his spiritual efforts. On the contrary— if anything will help, it is his tefillah and good deeds. Hashem has countless reasons why a person may need to experience a period of financial challenge. But the moment Hashem decides that it should come to an end, it will end— and not because of any extra physical hishtadlut . A person must learn to both accept and hope. Accept that everything that has happened until this moment was for his absolute best, and hope that going forward, Hashem will provide more. When Hashem wants someone to receive parnasah , He knows exactly how to find him, and He knows exactly how to give it to him. A man told me that when he first came to America, he didn't even speak English. He struggled terribly for three years trying to earn a living, and was having a very hard time. Eventually, he decided to enter the diamond and jewelry trade. He began traveling abroad—one week away, one week at home. That was the nature of the business at the time. He always made sure to return by Friday so he could be home for Shabbat. But once, while abroad, he got sick. A local doctor told him he was too sick to fly, and he was forced to remain there for Shabbat. On Friday morning, he went down to the hotel lobby, hoping to find some fruit—perhaps apples or bananas—for Shabbat. While he was there, another Jew recognized him and asked, "Would you like to come up to my room to see some merchandise? Maybe there's something you'd like to sell." The man was weak and just wanted to return to bed. But the other fellow insisted. "It'll only take a few minutes," he said. So he went upstairs. The man showed him a new style of diamond and said, "Take it. If you sell it, you'll pay me. If not, just give it back." That Sunday, he felt completely better and flew home. On Monday, he showed the diamond to one of his regular customers. The customer was so impressed with the stone that he immediately placed an order for forty of them. This led to a partnership between the two men in the design and production of that diamond—and from that one meeting, he eventually became a multi-millionaire. "Hashem wanted to make me wealthy," he told me. "I barely spoke English, and there weren't many trades I could have gone into. Hashem made me sick just so I would be stuck in that hotel on that Friday and meet the person who was literally holding my future in his room." I read a story about a man who owned a small grocery store. He worked long hours and barely made enough to get by. After years of trying, the business failed and he lost nearly everything. But instead of falling into despair, he accepted Hashem's will with love. He decided to spend more time learning Torah and took a job working in a local yeshivah kitchen, earning just enough to cover his basic expenses. One day, someone approached him. "I always admired your honesty when you ran the grocery store," he said. "I'm looking for someone I can trust to handle the logistics of my real estate operations." That simple conversation turned into a partnership—and within a few years, the man who had once been struggling to make ends meet became a millionaire. When the time came for his financial hardship to end, Hashem knew exactly where to find him and what opportunity to send his way. All success in parnasah comes only from Hashem. He is the only address to turn to for help. And our greatest tools to draw parnasah down from Heaven are tefillah and mitzvos . The person who continues to serve Hashem faithfully, even during times of struggle, will one day see how every step was part of Hashem's perfect plan.

KYUK is the oldest Native American-owned radio station in the country. It broadcasts morning newscasts in both English and Yup'ik, the local Indigenous language, to 56 remote communities in Southwest Alaska. When there's a weather emergency or even just a local basketball game, these communities turn to KYUK for information. But soon, that could all change. Late last week, Congress passed a rescissions bill that claws back the money set aside for public broadcasting for the next two years. For KYUK, this money represents close to 70 percent of its entire budget. Without it, the station could go dark. Host Elahe Izadi speaks with KYUK's interim general manager, Kristin Hall, about what the loss of public media funding could mean for her community. Later, Elahe speaks with media reporter Scott Nover about how after decades of talking about defunding public media, Republicans finally made it happen. Today's episode was produced by Tadeo Ruiz Sandoval. It was edited by Maggie Penman and mixed by Sam Bair.Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

    Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 22, 2025 is: jettison • JET-uh-sun • verb When you jettison something, you get rid of it either because it is not needed or because it is impeding your progress or otherwise weighing you down. // Now that the purchase of the building has been finalized, we'll revamp what we want to keep and jettison the rest. // The approach of the storm forced them to jettison their vacation plans. See the entry > Examples: “A 2017 study found that participants who wrote a to-do list before bed instead of journaling about their accomplishments fell asleep ‘significantly faster.' … ‘The more specifically participants wrote their to-do list, the faster they subsequently fell asleep, whereas the opposite trend was observed when participants wrote about completed activities,' the study authors wrote in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. They speculated that writing down tasks lets you jettison your worries, so you don't need to think about them while trying to sleep.” — Tracy Swartz, The New York Post, 20 Jan. 2025 Did you know? Jettison comes from the Anglo-French noun geteson (literally “action of throwing”), and ultimately from the Latin verb jactare, meaning “to throw.” The noun jettison refers to a voluntary sacrifice of cargo to lighten a ship's load in time of distress, and is the source of the word jetsam, the word for goods that are so jettisoned; that word is often paired with flotsam (“floating wreckage”). These days you don't have to be on a sinking ship to jettison something: the verb also means simply “to get rid of.”

Mary welcomes back Juan Valdes of Reasons for Hope to discuss the hows and whys of critical thinking in a post-truth world. Humans bring many biases, indoctrinations and emotions to so many issues of the day, and seem content to take most things at face value instead of thinking things through in context. Words have meaning, and even before we speak, our thoughts have already given birth to a multitude of possible words - and actions. No believer can ever hope to be an effective apologist without understanding the importance of thinking things through - with the goal of giving an answer to all who ask about our hope. Social media, in fact, is probably the main contributor to the destruction of meaningful discourse in the public square. We talk about how critical thinking is indispensable in our lives at any age. Juan is the senior pastor of a Spanish-speaking congregation in Florida and has worked at a Christian school as both a chaplain and a teacher for more than 20 years. His educational background includes graduate work at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and master's degrees from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and Logos Graduate School. He has a Doctor of Ministry in Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary. As an educated and experienced teacher of apologetics, Juan has taught Bible and Introduction to Philosophy at the High School level, and Theology, Bible, and Apologetics at the seminary level, in both English and Spanish.   Stand Up For The Truth Videos: https://rumble.com/user/CTRNOnline & https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgQQSvKiMcglId7oGc5c46A

He wasn't just preserving tradition; he was refining it. His approach to the Shang Han Lun was rigorous yet poetic, grounded in clinical realities and shaped by decades of upheaval in 20th-century China. There's a humility to his voice—a self-proclaimed “still-learning” doctor in his seventies—and a precision that cuts through theory to show how fire and water, yin and yang, truly move through the human body.In this conversation with Eran Even, we explore Dr. Liu's remarkable clarity and how it comes through in a slim but potent book that Eran has translated into English. In the UK, traditional folk music preservation, academia and performance had long been part of the culture, but by the 1960s it seems there was conflict between those who wanted to play the music “authentically” (thus ignoring that folk songs had always evolved over the centuries), those who wanted to play those songs in a more contemporary fashion, and (shock horror) those who wanted to compose NEW songs in an accepted folk style. Welcome to episode 187 of Love That Album podcast. While there were many groups in the UK who were a part of the folk-rock scene starting in the 1960s, the three most famous were Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Steeleye Span. It seems that group memberships had something of a revolving door policy with many leaving one to join another when musical ideologies weren't being met. Ashley Hutchings had become dissatisfied with the direction that Fairport was headed, and formed Steeleye Span. Span themselves went through several lineup and sound changes before arriving at its accepted classic lineup for their sixth LP, Now We Are Six. The focus of this LTA is album number 7, released in 1975, Commoner's Crown. I am joined once again by the co-host of the superb Only Three Lads podcast, Brett Vargo. He is a man of many musical passions, and one of them is the English folk scene of that 60s / 70s period. I discovered you can't have a proper discussion on Span (or maybe other folk groups as well) without talking about the Child Ballads. I need to give credit to Nate Wilcox of the wonderful Let It Roll podcast who drew my attention to the existence of the Child Ballads through his show. It's a shame our recording schedules couldn't align for him to join us, but hopefully somewhere down the track Nate will be back on LTA. Brett and I discuss some Steeleye Span history, Frances Child's contribution to the folk and rock repertoire, murder, infidelity, drugs and theft – all folk subject staples. The folk repertoire is so much about story-telling, so we delve into the origins of some of these songs, how the stories changed over the centuries to the point of Steeleye Span recording, and the musicianship and vocal arrangements on Commoner's Crown…..oh and we discuss about how Hercules Grytpype-Thynne dropped by to play some ukelele. My huge gratitude goes to Brett for providing his insight to this music and time to the show. Only Three Lads is an essential podcast listen. Every week, Brett and Uncle Gregg bring in incredible musician guests from the golden age of alternative music to discuss not only their own work, but to help count down a top 5 of whatever the given subject may be. BE A BETTER SHOOTER with these insights from NSCA Level 3 instructor and bird hunter Dave Fiedler. My friend Dave has a different take on becoming a better shooter ... simplify, shed a bad habit (or maybe two), and soon you'll be yelling "Fetch!" Dave will take us through a lesson just as he teaches at Mid Valley Clays & Shooting School with an emphasis on hunting, not target shooting. You can take his tips into the garage and the range, then the field, from practice to practical. In the second half, we cover gun fit for us regular folk who aren't buying a bespoke English shotgun ... simple things we can do to ensure our eye, cheek and shoulder are working together. Then we fix some of the common in-field goofs we make with our feet-eyes-hands-shoulder-gun. "Fix It" squares away your mobile mapping app; and listeners share their horror stories when I requested their worst Friday the 13th bad luck. And it's all brought to you by: HiVizSights.com, RuffLand Kennels, Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, TrulockChokes, HiViz shooting systems, Pointer shotguns, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.

Matthew James Thomas opens up in this heartfelt conversation about his journey from a rebellious, bullied teen in the English countryside to finding truth and belonging on stage. Growing up feeling misunderstood, he found safety and purpose in acting, discovering early on that truth-telling through performance was his way of making sense of the world. He shares the emotional weight he carries playing Harry Potter on Broadway, how he navigates the show's intense emotional peaks night after night, and why live theatre never gets old — even after over 135 performances. We also dive into the legacy of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, his love-hate relationship with social media, and why he believes musicals are only great when they get it exactly right. And yes, there's some mutual fan-girling over Severance, a hilarious attempt at explaining Les Misérables, and plenty of insight into what makes live theatre both terrifying and electrifying. Matthew James Thomas is a British actor, director, and songwriter. He originated the title role in the 2013 Broadway revival of Pippin, starred as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and has appeared in Accused, Summer of Rockets, Britannia High, Billy Elliot, and About a Boy. He currently stars as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.
