This Day in Legal History: Easter RisingOn April 24, 1916, the Easter Rising erupted in Dublin as Irish republicans launched a bold and ultimately tragic insurrection against British rule. The event, intended to establish an independent Irish Republic, had enormous legal and constitutional consequences that would ripple through British and Irish law for years. Roughly 1,200 rebels seized key buildings across Dublin, proclaiming the establishment of the Irish Republic from the steps of the General Post Office. In response, the British government declared martial law and deployed thousands of troops to suppress the rebellion. Courts-martial were swiftly convened, and between May 3 and May 12, fifteen rebel leaders were executed, including Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, and Thomas Clarke. These summary executions, carried out without the protections of civilian trial, shocked many in Ireland and Britain and were later criticized as legally excessive and politically tone-deaf.The use of military tribunals rather than civilian courts raised serious questions about the limits of legal authority during wartime and the rights of those accused of political violence. The Rising also marked a critical turning point in British colonial legal practice, highlighting the inherent tension between empire and constitutional rule.In the wake of the rebellion, the British government passed additional emergency laws to manage dissent in Ireland, but these legal measures only deepened nationalist sentiment. The Easter Rising set the stage for the Irish War of Independence, the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, and ultimately the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922.The legal legacy of April 24 is one of sharp contrast: between the rigid imposition of imperial law and the revolutionary demand for self-determination. It remains a powerful example of how law can be both a tool of control and a symbol of contested legitimacy. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has agreed to drop its appeal in a longstanding legal battle with PayPal over a 2019 rule that required digital wallet providers to disclose fees using a standardized form originally intended for prepaid cards. The decision came through a joint filing on April 21 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, following a March 2024 district court ruling in PayPal's favor that limited the reach of the rule. The CFPB's regulation extended fee disclosure mandates for prepaid cards to digital wallets, despite the agency's own acknowledgment that most digital wallets don't charge such fees. PayPal contested the rule soon after its issuance, arguing that digital wallets function differently from prepaid cards since they store payment credentials rather than actual funds. In contrast, prepaid cards are used to store and spend cash directly. The legal journey began when Judge Richard J. Leon initially sided with PayPal in 2020, but his ruling was overturned by the D.C. Circuit in 2023, prompting a remand. Leon again ruled for PayPal in March 2024, leading the CFPB to appeal before ultimately deciding to drop the case. This withdrawal marks the second recent instance of the CFPB, under acting Director Russell Vought, stepping back from litigation challenging its rules. A week prior, the agency also agreed to halt enforcement of a proposed $8 cap on credit card late fees amid a separate lawsuit. PayPal is represented by WilmerHale which, you will of course remember, has been targeted by a Trump executive order.CFPB Agrees to Halt Appeal of PayPal Win on Digital Wallet RulePresident Trump announced via Truth Social that he is suing the law firm Perkins Coie, accusing it of committing “egregious and unlawful acts,” specifically pointing to the actions of an unnamed individual at the firm. However, it remains unclear whether Trump intends to file a new lawsuit or was referring to ongoing legal disputes.Last month, Trump signed an executive order that aimed to terminate federal contracts with clients of Perkins Coie if the firm had performed any work on them. In response, Perkins Coie sued the administration, claiming the order was unconstitutional.Trump's legal team also requested the recusal of U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell from overseeing that case, alleging a “pattern of hostility” toward the president. Trump repeated his criticism of Judge Howell in his latest post, calling her “highly biased.”The legal conflict adds to Trump's ongoing confrontations with the judiciary and firms linked to Democratic causes. Perkins Coie has historically represented Democratic interests, making the dispute politically charged.Trump says he is suing Perkins Coie law firm | ReutersLaw firms Perkins Coie and WilmerHale asked federal judges in Washington, D.C., to permanently block executive orders issued by President Donald Trump. The firms argue the orders are unconstitutional acts of political retaliation. These orders sought to revoke government contracts held by their clients and restrict the firms' access to federal buildings, citing their ties to Trump's legal and political opponents. The legal battle marks a significant escalation between major law firms and the Trump administration. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell heard Perkins Coie's request for summary judgment, while Judge Richard Leon handled WilmerHale's case later in the day. Both judges had already issued temporary blocks on Trump's orders in March. The Department of Justice defended the executive orders as valid exercises of presidential authority. Meanwhile, other prominent firms like Paul Weiss and Skadden Arps have settled with the White House to avoid similar orders, agreeing to provide pro bono services and other terms reportedly totaling nearly $1 billion in value. The legal community has widely condemned the executive orders. Hundreds of firms and legal organizations argue the moves were designed to chill legal representation against Trump, infringing on the right to counsel and undermining the legal profession's independence. Some attorneys at firms that settled have resigned in protest.Law firms targeted by Trump ask judges to permanently bar executive orders against them | ReutersThe State Bar of California plans to ask the California Supreme Court to lower the passing score for the February 2025 bar exam after a troubled rollout that included technical and logistical failures. The proposed score of 534 is below the 560 recommended by the bar's testing expert. This score adjustment would apply to all test takers, regardless of the specific issues they faced.February's exam marked the first time California administered a hybrid bar test, offered both remotely and in-person, and without components of the long-used national bar exam. Although the change aimed to reduce costs, it resulted in significant problems such as software crashes and intrusive proctoring interruptions. It's unclear how many of the 4,300 examinees were affected, but the State Bar has opened an investigation into the widespread issues. The bar also recommended imputing scores for test takers unable to complete key sections, a process that estimates performance based on completed answers. The Committee of Bar Examiners acknowledged the challenge of crafting a remedy that is both fair and preserves the integrity of the exam.In addition to adjusting scores, the committee is considering provisional licensing programs that would allow affected test takers to practice under supervision while awaiting full licensure. Final test results are due May 2, and the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the score change request by April 28. The committee will meet again on May 5 to consider further options.California bar seeks to reduce pass score after disastrous exam rollout | Reuters This is a public episode. The 1916 Easter Rising was a definitive moment in 20th-century Irish history. Its memory was evoked throughout The Troubles, with republicans wearing commemorative Easter Lily badges to honour the revolutionary martyrs that came before them. On Easter Monday in 1916, amongst the backdrop of the ongoing First World War, Irish revolutionaries brought the anti-colonial struggle to Britain's doorstop. Armed men and women stormed and seized important buildings across Dublin, and proclaimed the beginning of The Irish Republic. From the steps of the General Post Office, Patrick Pearse read the proclamation of independence that would be referred back to for generations. As the leaders of the revolution faced their tragic fate, we trace the journeys of three rebels who escaped execution: a countess with a pistol, a maths-teacher-turned-military-commander, and a young man from Cork who will soon oversee a guerrilla war campaign as the revolution is reborn… Listen as Anita and William are joined by Diarmaid Ferriter, author of A Nation Not A Rabble, to discuss the impact of the Easter Rising. _____________ Empire UK Live Tour: The podcast is going on a UK tour!
The Easter Rising began in Dublin's General Post Office on Easter Monday, 24th April 1916, with Patrick Pearse's dramatic proclamation of the Irish Republic. Led by republicans opposed to British rule in Ireland, this was the most significant uprising in more than a century - and changed the entire course of Irish and British history, with effects that still reverberate today. In today's episode, Tom and Dominic return to the GPO in Dublin, as the brilliant Professor Paul Rouse tells the bloody story - at once inspiring, terrifying and heartbreaking - of the Easter Rising and its extraordinary aftermath. *The Rest Is History Live Tour 2023*:Tom and Dominic are going on a U.S. tour in 2023, performing in Washington D.C. and New York! “In every generation the Irish people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms.” The proclamation of the Irish Republic, delivered by Patrick Pearse in Dublin, marked the beginning of the Easter Rising in 1916.Looking at the Anglo-Irish relationship leading up to the Easter Rising, Tom and Dominic are joined by historian Paul Rouse, to explore the deep history between Britain and Ireland, from the Norman conquest to the rebellion of 1798.*The Rest Is History Live Tour 2023*:Tom and Dominic are going on an U.S. tour in 2023, performing in Washington D.C. and New York! The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1575 Birth of Jakob Böhme, German original thinker. Jakob Böhme did a great deal of thinking and writing, not only about theology and Christianity but also about the natural world. Here's what Mary Oliver wrote about Böhme. I read Jacob Boehme and am caught in his shining web. Here are Desire and Will that should be (he says) as two arms at one task; in my life they are less cooperative. Will keeps sliding away down the hill to play when work is called for and Desire piously wants to labor when the best season of merriment is around me. Troublemakers both of them them. And another writer I admire and enjoy is Elizabeth Gilbert. Elizabeth wrote about Jakob Böhme in her book, The Signature of All Things. The title of her book is from something that Jakob Böhme had written. Jacob Boehme was a sixteenth-century cobbler from Germany who had mystical visions about plants. Many people considered him an early botanist. Alma's mother, on the other hand, had considered him a cesspool of residual medieval superstition. So there was considerable conflict of opinion surrounding Jacob Boehme. The old cobbler had believed in something he called the signature of all things"- namely, that God had hidden clues for humanity's betterment inside the design of every flower, leaf, fruit, and tree on earth. All the natural world was a divine code, Boehme claimed, containing proof of our Creator's love. 1766 Robert Bailey Thomas, founder, editor, and publisher of The Old Farmer's Almanac, is born. Robert made his first edition - his very first copy of The Old Farmer's Almanac -back in 1792. 1889 Paul George Russell, American botanist, is born. Paul George Russell was born in Liverpool, New York. He worked as a botanist for the United States government for over five decades. Paul George Russell went on collecting trips in Northern Mexico. He's remembered in the names of several different plants, including the Verbena russellii, a woody flowering plant that is very pretty. And he's also remembered in the naming of the Opuntia russellii, which is a type of prickly pear cactus. Now during his career, Paul George Russell could identify plants based on what their seeds looked like. One of the ways that he developed this skill is he compiled a seed bank of over 40,000 different types of sources. Today Paul George is most remembered for his work with cherry trees. He was a vital part of the team that was created to install the living architecture of Japanese cherry trees around the Washington Tidal Basin. Paul George Russell put together a little bulletin, a little USDA circular called Oriental Flowering Cherries, in March 1934. It was his most impressive work. His guide provided all kinds of facts and detailed information about the trees just when it was needed most. People were curious about the cherry trees and fell utterly in love with them once they saw them blooming in springtime. Paul George Russell passed away at the age of 73 after having a heart attack. On a poignant note, he was supposed to see his beloved cherry trees in bloom with his daughter. They had planned a trip to go to the tidal basin together. But unfortunately, that last visit never happened. So this year, when you see the cherry trees bloom, raise a trowel to Paul, George Russell, and remember him and his fine work. And if you can get your hands on a copy of that 72-page circular he created in 1934, that's a find. It's all still good information. 1841 Charles Sprague Sargent, American botanist, is born. He was the first director of Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum. Charles was known for being a little curmudgeonly. He was pretty stoic. One of my favorite stories about Charles was the day he went on an exploration of mountains. The botanist accompanying him could hardly contain himself when they stopped at a spot of singular beauty. The botanist was jumping around and shouting for joy, and he looked over at Charles Sprague Sargent and said something to the effect of "How can you stand there and say and do nothing amidst this incredible beauty?" That's one of my favorite stories and a glimpse into the personality of Charles Sprague Sargent. 1914 James M. Bates observed a deep violet patch of blooming flowers in an alfalfa field in Arcadia Valley County in Nebraska. James wrote about the experience in a publication called The American Botanist. The plant that James was writing about was Chorispora tenella, which is in the mustard family. It is known by several common names, including purple mustard, Musk mustard, or the cross flower - because it's a crucifer meaning the flowers are in a cross shape. Now the name Musk flower has to do with the fragrance, the smell;, on a website for Colorado wildflowers, the author wrote, I think they smell of Crayola crayons, warmed and melting in the sun. And so I called this plant, the crayon plant. So purple mustard or Muskflower, however, you call it, is edible, in case you were wondering. The backyard forger writes that You can snip the top four to six inches off of each plant. Including the flowers, which are not only edible, but pretty, now you might be asking yourself, how could I use purple mustard And feast magazine says this purple mustard can be used much the same way as you would. Other mustards Spread some on your next arugala sandwich. Serve it alongside pickles and crusty bread with charcuterie. Whisk a teaspoon into your vinaigrettes instead of Dijon. So there are some uses for your purple mustard. 1916 Today Vassar College honored Shakespeare on the 300th anniversary of his death by planting pansies. Students from Winifred Smith's Shakespeare class and Emmeline Moore's botany class planted the pansies in a garden on the school grounds. And, of course, Shakespeare referred to pansies as the flower for thoughts. A flower that can withstand the cold, pansies have a chemical, essentially nature's antifreeze, that allows it to fight those cold temperatures. The Canadian naturalist Charles Joseph Sariol once said that pansies should be grown from seed. Beatrix Potter liked Pansies. And the happy poet Edgar Albert Guest wrote about pansies in verse from his poem To Plant a Garden. If you'd get away from boredom, And find new delights to look for, Learn the joy of budding pansies, Which you've kept a special nook for. Pansies are a happy flower and a great way to honor Shakespeare. 1919 Ernest H. Wilson worked at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and received a shipment of Kurume azaleas from Japan. Ernest wrote, "104 azaleas were unpacked at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard, and all were found alive. Considering the length of their journey. They were in good condition." Ernest also alludes to the fact that he had to work on nurturing his relationship with his growers and gardeners. The Kurume azaleas were grown by a Japanese gardener who had "a reluctance to part with them". And so the fact that these azaleas made it to America was in no small measure due to the relationship building and people skills of Ernest Henry Wilson - something that doesn't often get enough attention when we think about plant explorers. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Tiny and Wild by Graham Laird Gardner Graham has the perfect last name for a garden author - Gardner. I mean, how'd that happen? In any case, this is a beautiful book. It's one of the prettiest books for gardeners this year. And the subtitle is Build a Small-Scale Meadow Anywhere. So, of course, we're talking about creating tiny Meadows on your property. The cover of this book had to be appealing; there are a lot of attractive purple flowers in the meadows, of course. The cover illustrates how you can integrate wildflowers - flowers you will find in Meadows that you can use in your outdoor living spaces and garden designs- and how those flowers play an essential role in our ecosystems. Now Graham kicks things off in this book by asking, "Why a mini meadow?" (I will share my thoughts on why a mini meadow might be just the ticket for your garden after Graham's appeal.) Graham writes, You've heard the calling for a more resilient biodiverse garden, full of flowers and movement that's inspired by natural plant communities and the wild spaces around you. Perhaps you feel a sense of nostalgia for the wilderness of your childhood? Or need to invite wild places home. Do you have a balcony or an underperforming section of yard? Maybe you have an area of lawn you'd like to convert or a section of your veggie plot you'd like to devote to attracting more pollinators and other beneficial insects; however, you're not quite sure where to begin. And so, of course, many Meadows might be the solution that you've been looking for. Now, when I think about answering the question, "Why mini-meadows?" I think the timing is correct in terms of design trends and acceptance. We've all been exposed to Piet Oudolf's gardens, and he's been incorporating plants like grasses and wildflowers for so long. He's been painting our public spaces with his version of Meadows - beautiful, beautiful Meadows - that are handpicked and planted to maximize beauty. So I think gardeners are ready for this book. The other day, I talked to my neighbor across the street, and she shares a common pond area with other neighbors. And for most of the year, it can be rather unsightly, especially if we're going through a drought. And so she was wondering what they could do, what they should be planting, and I think the answer is found in this book with many of the plants that would go in a meadow. Think of all kinds of grasses, wildflowers, and of course, incorporating lots of native plants - embracing the wildness that you find along so many of our waterways, whether it's a river, a brook, or a pond, for instance. Now the chapters in this book are as follows: First, find inspiration in your parks and the plant communities that are around you. The second chapter talks about the importance of site selection. Don't underestimate this because, as the saying goes for real estate and houses when you're going to home your plants, you need to think about location, location, location. Then the third chapter talks about design tips for your mini meadow -how to combine the beauty and the function of a field in your garden. The next couple of chapters get into the nitty-gritty of installing a meadow, which isn't as complicated as it sounds, but it's great to have a detailed guide like this to help you remember all the little details. Chapter Six talks about how to maintain your meadow, which is Probably the most crucial chapter in the book, and it's where the bulk of your annual laborers will come into play. And then, chapter seven is the fun chapter - What to Plant. Here Graham shares a bunch of different plant lists and charts so that you can pick the perfect plants for your tiny metal. I love that. So in the past couple of years, you've heard me talk about planting mini orchards, Reforesting with mini forests - and now we are here, building Tiny and wild Meadows In our gardens. You can get a copy of Tiny and Wild by Graham Laird Gardner and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $17. Botanic Spark 1916 On this day, a small garden known as Foundation Stone was installed at Farm Leigh house in Phoenix Park. A man named Patrick Pearse helped christen the garden with a commemorative speech. This unique garden was a reflection of the solar system on that very day. So the planets and their alignment were perfectly represented by nine lichen-covered boulders positioned to orbit a granite bowl, representing the sun. This simple garden with nine boulders and a granite bowl also incorporated circular ripples of grass around the boulders, accentuating their perfect placement in the garden, which mirrored the night sky. To me, this garden perfectly illustrates that there is no end to the amount of creativity we can use when it comes to garden design. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Reading, Pennsylvania's first and only socialist mayor. Music: The Rebel by Patrick Pearse, arranged and performed by Sam James.
On August 1, 1915, Patrick Henry Pearse delivered a graveside eulogy at the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa that would go down as one of the most important speeches of 20th century Irish history.
This week we're reading the first third of The Scorching Wind by Walter Macken. The Scorching Wind opens from the perspective of Dominic, who is preparing to accompany his older, more handsome brother Dualta to the train that will bring Dualta to the Western Front of World War I. The boys come from a family steeped in the politics of Irish Independence. The Irish Nationalist movement is split at the outbreak of the Great War, on the one side the Redmond volunteers agreeing to fight for the empire in exchange for Home Rule, on the other the hardcore nationalists who wish to prosecute a national independence struggle in Ireland. The family of Dominic and Dualta reflect this split, Dualta is volunteering with Redmond, their father a principled nationalist. After Dualta is sent off, the book transports us to the future, which culminates in the Easter Rebellion of 1916. The hardcore nationalists, led by the likes of Patrick Pearse and James Connoly, attempt an insurrection against the British state to establish an Irish Republic. Their efforts failed and 16 of the leaders of that rebellion are hanged by the British state. In the wake of the Easter Rebellion, Dominic's father is arrested by the British military and dies from a persistent cold exacerbated by prison conditions, Dualta returns from the Western front crippled but still impressive. Dominic remains resistant and intentionally aloof of the bubbling Irish resistance brewing around him, but is inevitably sucked into the schemes of his friends and associates. The sections leaves off with Dominic on a train, watching as the charismatic Irish section leader Lorry is arrested by the infamous Black and Tans. Dominic wonders of Lorry's fate and little does he know that Lorry was executed, with two bullets to his head and thrown in a ditch.
Join Lorcan Collins as he discusses the life of Patrick Pearse, the poet, teacher, language enthusiast, revolutionary and signatory of the 1916 Proclamation who was executed for his role in the Easter Rising. Guest appearance by the biographer of Willy Pearse and Irish language expert Dr Roisín Ní Ghairbhí.
A bit over one hundred years after the Irish Easter Rising, author Colm Toibin recounts the slow movements for independence that peaked in the rebellion in Dublin in 1916. It was the first armed action of the Irish revolutionary period. The British army suppressed the rebellion. But the high number of civilian casualties and the severe punishment of the Irish leaders let to increased support for Irish independence.

Grattan de Courcy Wheeler, who sadly passed away in August 2020, was brought up at the Drummin family estate near Carbery, Co. Kildare.I met Grattan initially in 2009 while researching for the Irish Country House Oral History Collection, and was immediately taken by his gentle manner and warm hospitality. Drummin House was wonderfully atmospheric and, on entering, I felt as though I was taking a step back in time. A fire blazed a welcome in the drawingroom where we sat to compile a recording on Grattan's story. We were to become firm friends, and his generous hospitality over the succeeding years eased the burden of travel for me as Jane and I continued our research in oral history. His real fascinating with history was evident as he recalled the lives of his ancestors, who include the builder of Drummin, John Grattan; Grattan's grandfather, Robert de Courcy Wheeler, a medical officer who served in the Great War and who inherited Drummin, Grattan's granduncle, Henry de Courcy Wheeler, aide de camp to General Lowe in Dublin during the 1916 Rising and the officer who took Patrick Pearse's surrender.
Welcome to Cerddoriaeth Celtica, a companion piece for the Starlight Radio Dreams series “Celtica”. When we conceived of Celtica the desire was to create an adventure serial which used music as part of the action and story. From using music to power Celtica’s magic tools to musical numbers for the big moments, Celtica does exactly that. And Cerddoriaeth Celtica lets us further explore the beauty of Celtic music, both as part of the serial and just for its own sake.In this episode of Cerddoriaeth Celtica, Karolyn Blake, co writer for Celtica and the actor behind the title character, sings Come Out Ye Black and Tans, an Irish protest song with lyrics by Dominic Behan and a tune by Piaras Mac Gearailt* (Pierce FitzGerald). It is a rousing tune with lyrics that inspire us to rise up against our oppressors. The world is in need of uprisings right now, and it’s hard to beat the Irish for a good old protest song!Starlight Radio Dreams stands with protesters and affirms that Black Lives Matter. Keep yourselves safe, and stay well.*In the episode, Karolyn mistakenly attributes the tune to “Pearse” as in Patrick Pearse. Join the Boiz for a polarizing story of bravery as the men and women of Ireland (specifically Dublin) fought and died for independence and Irish freedom. A listener request, just in time for Easter!
The episode you’re about to hear has a lot of quoted oratory in it, which not only makes my job a little easier, but it is also probably more pleasing to your ear since the subject was infinitely better with words than I could ever pretend to be. It’s actually quite fun to have a great orator as a biography subject… I get to relish in the speeches. My subject in this episode was a man born for a different time. And when you listen to his speeches, you get the sense that he knew this about himself. Nonetheless, he knew his mission, or vocation in life almost from the day he was born and was singularly focused on it until the day he died.So dedicated to the cause of his country he was that there’s no evidence that this otherwise, young, hansom, educated, eloquent and very eligible bachelor ever had a romantic interest, which have led to speculations about his sexuality that I think are inappropriate to entertain since there’s just no information about this personal part of his life.Others have wondered if he was on the autism spectrum. Again, speculation, and I’m not sure it’s important anyway. What I found was a man who had a vocational love of his countrymen with such passion that he happily gave his life for them. It appears by his own words he knew this would be his fate, even from a young age. His mastery of words, eloquence of speech, and unabashed passion for his people’s heritage in the face of the British Empire, culminated in a showdown with that great power. That showdown is the snowball that spurred the avalanche of Irish Independence, and it all started with The Deeds of Easter Week.
Listen to the debate from the Battle of Ideas Festival 2019. The result of the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 seemed to put paid for the foreseeable future to the most significant threat to the Union, but the result of the EU referendum in 2016 has put the cat amongst the pigeons once more. The future of Northern Ireland has also been a constant bone of contention since the Brexit vote. In September, a shock opinion poll suggested that a quarter of Welsh voters would vote for independence. Is the Union really in imminent danger? Is there a positive case for the UK today, whether economic, political or even emotional? **SPEAKERS**MEV BROWNspokesperson, SDP Scotland; former spokesperson, Business for Britain in Scotland; campaigner, Better Together DR RUTH DUDLEY EDWARDSjournalist, historian and broadcaster; award-winning author, The Seven and Patrick Pearse: the triumph of failure LINDA MURDOCHcampaigner for rights and democracy in Scotland; director of careers, University of Glasgow AKASH PAUNsenior fellow, Institute for Government; associate fellow, Centre on Constitutional Change, Edinburgh University DR GLYNNE WILLIAMSassociate professor, School of Business, University of Leicester CHAIR: JUSTINE BRIAN director, Civitas Schools Subscribe to the Academy of Ideas newsletter at battleofideas.org.uk/subscribe
Gerry Adams, one of the most important figures in the history of the Irish State, joins us in the studio for episode #103 of Paddy Holohan’s No Shame Podcast. A man who needs little introduction on these shores, Gerry is an Irish Republican politician, current Louth TD, the former president of Sinn Féin & was an instrumental figure behind the Northern Ireland Peace process during the 1990’s. There are so many topics up for discussion on this week's show with Gerry & Paddy covering a lot of ground in a landmark episode for the No Shame Podcast. Some of the key areas during the 55 minute conversation include, the Ballymurphy massacres, internment, Gerry's friendship with Bobby Sands, the Hunger strikes, British Collusion, the assassination attempt on Gerry's life, Nelson Mandela, the peace process, Martin McGuinness, Brexit, Irish Unity, the cook book & so much more. In a standout moment, Gerry acknowledges that there were killings at the hands of the IRA during the Troubles & states that Republicans are trying to atone for what they did, something that can't be said for the British Government. In a powerful closing statement, Gerry discusses the prospect of Irish Unity & how it's finally achievable through peaceful means for the first time ever. This is an option that didn't exist for Patrick Pearse, Michael Collins or Bobby Sands. Having served as president of Sinn Féin for over 35 years, Adams will be calling time on a truly remarkable political career in 2020 when the next general election is announced. Until then he is still working actively in the community. He was on the doors in Tallaght last Tuesday canvasing for Sinn Féin candidate Mark Ward. It's quite fitting that the podcast finishes on the subject of the Presidential office. Where one beard bows out another one enters the fray with Paddy Holohan stepping up his bid to take the Áras next time out. We can't be sure but we think, on a technicality, Paddy got an unofficial, indirect but albeit solid endorsement from big GerryA #FairDig #SeenThemGiven #Paddy4Prez We'd like to finish by giving a very special thanks to Gerry & the party of Sinn Féin for appearing on the No Shame Podcast. This was one of Paddy's top three guests when he started the show over two years ago & we promise this one lives up to its billing. The full podcast is available now across all the usual platforms including Youtube, iTunes & Spotify, enjoy.
Full text: http://www.president.ie/en/diary/details/president-attends-state-ceremonial-event-as-part-of-the-ireland-2016-centen On 7 July 2016 President Michael D. Higgins gave the keynote address at a ceremony in honour of Patrick Pearse’s contribution to the Irish language. The ceremony formed part of 'An Teanga Bheo' strand of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. The revival of the Irish language was a core ambition of many of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, based on a vision of an independent Ireland with its own spoken and written language.
The world was a strange place in 1916. In this episode, we'll do some more contextualising (don't sigh at me like that) by examining an unlikely mirror image of Patrick Pearse in the thoroughly nationalist France of 1914. Additionally, we'll examine in closer detail the beliefs of the rebels on their deathbeds, and what they expected to come after their sacrifice. We also take a look at how the reporting of events during the war changed after the rising, something which adds to the idea that the rising was an avenue of the First World War which went on to have such dramatic consequences for Ireland and the wider world. In this episode, we look at the beliefs and passions of men like Patrick Pearse, Tom Clarke and James Connolly, as well as set the scene for the radicalisation of Pearse following his return home from the United States. We unwrap the structure of the IRB, and detail how a minority came to take over the group and control it with radicals. It's a critical building block for what's to come in the series, so I hope you'll check it out and enjoy it! MUSIC: 'Absent Friends' by Anna on the flute, self titled theme. 100 Years Ago on this day, Patrick Pearse read out the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, a document and event which was to have profound consequences for the island of Ireland for the next century. In this episode, experience the atmosphere of that event, and a special vocal history of Ireland up to the point that the Rising took place - from Gladstone's news that he would have to form a government in 1868, to the point that Dublin became the warzone that was the 1916 Rising, where a terrible beauty was born. (Christine and Elizabeth) In Part II of their examination of the rebellion, Christine and Elizabeth follow Patrick Pearse and his associates from the GPO to Kilmainham Gaol, take a look at how Britain handled the rebels, and assess what it all meant.
This Easter marks the beginning of the celebrations of the centenary of the Easter Rising in Dublin, when the Irish patriots under the command of James Connolly, Patrick Pearse, T.J. Clarke and others led a revolt against the British Empire and established the first Provisional Government of the Republic of Ireland. Together with the former Connolly Show presenter, Dave Gibney, we will discuss the significance of this important date and what it means for the political situation in Ireland today.
We are joined by David Bracken who works as the Limerick Diocesan Archivist to talk about the publication of a new book about the faith profiles of the 1916 leaders. The title of the book comes from the last letter of John Mallin to his wife from Kilmainhan Gaol written the night before his execution, "My darling Wife pulse of my heart, this is the end of all things earthly; sentense of Death has been passed, and a quarter to four tomorrow the sentense will be carried out by shooting and so must Irishmen pay for trying to make Ireland a free nation, Gods will be done.....My heart strings are torne to pieces when I think of you and them of our manly James, happy go lucky John, Shy warm Una dadys Girl and oh little Joseph my little man my little man Wife dear Wife I cannot keep the tears back when I think of him he will rest in my arms no more, to think I have to leave you to battle through the world with them without my help, what will you do my own darling …Edited by Limerick Diocesan archivist David Bracken, ‘The End of All Things Earthly' has contributions from 18 academics on this aspect of the leaders' lives and also includes personal letters and testimonies of the leaders, as well as rarely seen photographs and transcripts. Commenting ahead of the book launch, Bishop Leahy said, “The question of how faith and armed rebellion can be compatible has exercised much conversation from the time of the rising to, indeed, the present day. However, the book does not seek to adjudicate on this but, instead, merely give a sense of what faith meant to the Leaders.“The Rising Leaders clearly had varying degrees of faith. But what is striking is the closeness with God in the final moments before execution, including for those with little Catholic faith prior to this. It's a piece of work we are very proud of and indebted to all involved, including our own David Bracken for his effort in pulling this together, and, of course, all contributors.”Featuring contributions from a selection of Irish academics and historians, the book comprises seventeen concise, yet richly detailed, essays that provide a fascinating insight into the faith profiles of the leaders of the Easter Rising. The essays trace pivotal movements: from the horrors witnessed by Roger Casement in colonial Africa and South America; to the radicalisation of Patrick Pearse, whose writing reflected his Catholic upbringing; to the quiet prison cells in the sober aftermath of the Rising, where the likes of Con Colbert and Joseph Plunkett found consolation in their faith. The personal letters and testimonies of the leaders contained in the book provide a window into the minds of these revolutionaries as they faced their deaths.Including rarely seen photographs and transcripts, The End of All Things Earthly, offers a poignant perspective on the events of 1916, and explores the spirituality that shaped those who gave their lives to Ireland's independence. Contributors to the book include:Damien Burke, Assistant Archivist at the Irish Jesuit Archives.Bernie Deasy, Archivist at the Delaney Archive, which cares for the archival collections of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, the Patrician Brothers, Brigidine Sisters and Carlow College.Noelle Dowling, Archivist at Dublin Diocesan ArchivesRoddy Hegarty, Director of the Cardinal Tomán Ó Fiaich Memorial Library and ArchiveBrian Kirby, Archivist at the Irish Capuchin Provincial Archives.Bishop Brendan Leahy launched the new book in Dublin and his talk at the launch is available here.
The Bohemian Beat - Ep293 - RIddhi explores Irish folklore and poets. Including Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Kennelly, Padraic Colum, WB Yeats, and Patrick Pearse.
On Easter Monday 1916 Patrick Pearse stood on the steps of the GPO and read the Proclamation. John Cunningham questions how our view of Pearse has evolved from the adulation of the early years to his relevance today (Broadcast 2005).
