I am so excited to bring you this incredible conversation with Robyn Youkilis. If you've been following along, you know we're diving into a series I've lovingly dubbed the "Mommy Olympics"—a reflection on the pressures of modern motherhood. Is it a race to win gold, or is it more of a team sport where we all win by showing up authentically? In this episode, I sit down with Robyn, a wellness entrepreneur, bestselling author, and intuitive guide who has been transforming lives for over 15 years. Robyn's approach to health, parenting, and self-love is a breath of fresh air in a world that often glorifies overextension and martyrdom. We dig deep into her journey from maiden to motherhood, her philosophy on “mothering without martyring,” and how she's rewritten the rules for herself, her kids, and her thriving business. Robyn's wisdom about embracing the seasons of life, setting boundaries, and staying true to yourself left me inspired and, frankly, ready to let go of some things I've been holding onto. This conversation is packed with relatable moments, actionable tips, and so much heart. Whether you're navigating the chaos of motherhood, building a business, or just trying to stay grounded, this episode will leave you feeling seen, supported, and maybe even a little lighter. Key TakeawaysHonor Life's Seasons: Motherhood, work, and life all have cycles. Embrace where you are now instead of trying to do it all.Prioritize Yourself: Taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it helps everyone around you. Start with small, intentional “me time.”Simplify Meal Prep: Use pockets of time to prep basics like grains or veggies and focus on “good enough” meals rather than perfection.Let Things Go: If you haven't tackled a task in two weeks, delegate it or let it go—it's not worth the stress.Be Present: Even 20 minutes of undivided attention with your kids can create deep connection and joy.Use code MOMMYOLYMPICS to receive Robyn's Guided Grounding Meditation bundle for free!Connect with Robyn YoukilisWebsite: Yourhealthiestyou.com - Learn more about Robyn's programs and read her blogsRobynYoukilis.com – Explore her speaking events, and guided meditations.Social Media: Follow Robyn on Instagram @robynyoukilis for daily inspiration, recipes, and wellness tips.Books: Check out her bestsellers Go With Your Gut and Thin From Within.Mentioned in This EpisodePrograms: Hot Mama, Your Healthiest YouWellness Insights: The RIE Method, Ayurvedic approaches to seasonal eatingUpcoming Events: Robyn's speaking engagements and retreats—stay tuned on her website! Listen to your intuition! In today's episode, host Meagan Fitzgerald is joined by a very special guest, Robyn Youkilis. Robyn is an AADP certified health coach, CEO, and founder of Your Healthiest You. She and Meagan talk about the importance of listening to your intuition and how to grow into your best self.  Robyn explains that she became a health coach because her intuition led her down that path. She listened to that voice in her head pushing her towards nutrition school and made it happen. If you feel like you have a calling, you need to do everything in your power to make sure it happens and follow that guiding voice. By listening to your intuition, you will grow and truly live the life you are meant to be living.  Tune into this week's episode of Resting Bliss Face with your host Meagan Fitzgerald and special guest Robyn Youkilis to learn how to hear your intuition and take the first steps towards growth. Decide today to start truly living your happiest life!   Quotes  • “I was not like the other kids. Everyone else had homemade trail mix in their bags, and I was just like, ‘what is a goji berry?' Literally. But I never let that stop me. I felt like I didn't know anything. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I learned and I listened. I came from this true place of, because I don't really know anything, I can start from zero. And I let myself really start from zero and take one intuitively led step at a time.” (8:03-8:32 | Robyn) • “I'm showing up and I'm sharing myself, and it's shaky and scary sometimes. But I'm proud of my ability to truly feel the fear and do it anyway.” (12:03-12:13 | Robyn) • “If you have an idea, you have a calling, then you are more than capable to find all of the tools to make it happen. You will figure it out.” (24:46-24:54 | Meagan) • “For the people that are listening: what is right for you? Where do you need to go to grow? And growth is when you feel like you're living. What's the whole point of any of this? Whether it's with yourself or people that you care about, or your clients, or however it is you're showing up in this world, that's the good stuff of life. That's when you can walk outside and notice the leaves and the details and you feel alive, and you feel in your life and in your body and in your families. To me, that just feels like you're really living.” (45:49-46:27 | Robyn)    Links Connect with Robyn! Happy Workout Wednesday! Renaldo and Bernadette are doing great and are ready to get their days started! Bernadette made a delicious dish last night and is still so excited about that! Bernadette and team OLR are so excited for today's guests. Its workout Wednesday! We are into fitness... fitness this whole pizza in our mouth! Let's get this show started with our guests, Dr. Denis Wilson and Robyn Youkilis. Dr. Denis Wilson and Allison Roberts Today we welcome Dr. Denis Wilson to One Life Radio! Dr. Wilson has spent 30 years of his medical career focusing on body temperature and human metabolism. Over the past three decades, he has trained thousands of doctors on his methods, revolutionizing the way doctors diagnose and treat thyroid symptoms and metabolic disorders. Along with his daughter Allison, they founded Fastercise, a fitness program that uses medical-based research to help with weight management. Fastercise Fastercise is a fitness program that works when nothing else does! It allows you to eat less but not feel hunger! A day of fastercise is a day filled with waves of hunger. People typically get hungry morning, noon, night. Before eating your first meal, do one minute of "shivering" exercise. Your hunger will actually go away for two hours after you shiver! To shiver, just shake your legs and arms back and forth an inch in either directions. Even just laying down on your bed and shivering can stop hunger! Dr. Denis has noticed that children with autism spectrum disorder sometimes shiver or shake to their advantage! Shivering can give you energy. Shivering can be a great addiction to whatever exercise routine you already follow, or according to Dr. Denis, you can replace your workouts with fastercising completely! Allison had just had her baby and was 30 pounds heavier when she started fastercise. Filled with stress, Allison gave her Dad's fitness program a try. She lost the weight in 3 months! Just 8 months after having her baby, Allison entered a fitness competition and played high! Fastercise works! Tightening also works as a way to curb hunger. With shivering and tightening your muscles, hunger is canceled! The way you can think of it is the way a syphon works. One end has water and the other has an end that draws water. So with fastercise, your re creating a huge draw on your energy reserve, You are basically telling the body you are needing tons of energy When shivering and tightening, your energy need goes up 120 fold! Timing is important, you won't start burning fat until you are hungry. Wait to fastercise until you are hungry. A good time to tighten your muscles is after you've eaten. Fasting helps you rebuild your mitochondria, which is crucial for your brain. Fasting increasing longevity and brain function. Robyn Youkilis Robyn Youkilis is an AADP Certified Health Coach, author, internationally renowned speaker, and leading expert in holistic digestive health. Robyn’s coaching practice, “Your Healthiest You”, helps clients shed both physical and emotional weight with her straightforward yet supportive coaching style. Robyn wanted to write a book that didn't make demands of people for them to lose weight. She wanted to focus on the internal and not the external. It's all okay! Weight loss is a complicated conversation. You body may look exactly the same after following her regime, but you will feel better. Bernadette feels that Robyn's book is the key for calming the mind surrounding food. Intuitive eating is all about balance. Trust your body. Eating a croissant isn't always bad! Since it is the end of Recovery Month, we’re ‘Going Deep’ and taking a look at my own journey with addiction and recovery.   Throughout this month, we’ve talked with some incredible guests and gained insight on their own journeys with recovery. This month is truly about opening up your eyes, ears, and hearts to different ways to heal because there is not a one-size-fits-all recovery journey for those struggling with addiction. It’s also incredibly important to remember that addiction is not a standalone thing; addiction comes out as a way to deal with a deeper, underlying issue that needs to be resolved in order to begin to truly recover.   In this episode, we’re going to be taking a deep look into my own journey with recovery and take a look at some important aspects I’ve never discussed before. I tell you about what my life looked like; peak addiction, my experience in rehab, when my recovery truly started and the mindset shift that took place, what helped me immensely in my recovery, and where I am today with all of it.   Topics Discussed: [:35] About today’s episode. [5:10] Why we need to stop measuring success in recovery through abstinence. [9:40] The power behind radical transparency. [12:50] Diving into my journey into recovery, I speak about the different ways I coped, tried to quit, and how I came to start using daily and began selling. [27:44] What my life looked like when I was deep into my meth addiction. [31:53] ‘The beginning of the end’: my motorcycle accident, getting arrested, going to jail, and going through withdrawal. [41:52] My experience in rehab and why it ultimately didn’t work for me. [46:50] Getting kicked out of rehab, becoming homeless, and finally coming clean to my dad about my addiction. [50:14] When my recovery truly started: taking ownership. [56:25] When we first met, going to court, and how the judge gave me the opportunity to change my life. [1:01:35] What helped me immensely in my recovery, especially following the worst of my addiction. [1:05:04] What my current boundaries with substances are. [1:07:07] Explaining neuroplasticity. [1:08:12] About an important chat I had with a client struggling with drinking. [1:10:11] A challenge I have for all of you (on the theme of neuroplasticity)! [1:11:55] Answering a listener’s question; Do I still deal with any triggers? [1:13:52] How do you know when you have a problem? [1:17:30] Recovery doesn’t end and things don’t have to get ‘bad’ to get started. [1:18:11] About the IGNTD Hero program and how it works. Today I’m here to talk with you all about what recovery really looks like when you do it well. If you’ve been listening to the podcast long enough, you all know my stance on recovery and that it’s is not really about abstaining, but instead about creating a different reality for yourself and changing the circumstances of your life. But what does it look like to recover? And to do it well?   Today I’m going to be presenting the topic of what recover looks like and how to improve your life through the lens of what it is that we did to create the IGNTD Glow Event. This event will help not only those in recovery but anyone in their life journey, in figuring out how to become a better person and continuously improve upon yourself. We found, through setting up this event, that these four major categories are the most critical in allowing people to be their best selves: movement, mindfulness, inspiration, and education. Through these four areas, you can become more than you are right now.   Tune in to this episode to learn more about what real recovery looks like, about this transformational event, and what you can do to better yourself with a supportive community!   Topics Discussed: [:42] About today’s episode. Continuing on our recovery month theme, we have Donny Starkins joining us today! Donny is an international yoga instructor, mindfulness teacher, and personal development coach from Phoenix, Arizona. He is a professional speaker, teacher, and coach leading classes, workshops and seminars all across the world. Donny is also an ambassador for lululemon and works directly on their Mindfulosphy Team as both a yoga/meditation teacher and personal development coach. In addition to that, he is also the official yoga instructor for the Phoenix Suns and educates other professional athletes in the ways of yoga and mindfulness.   What’s really interesting about Donny too, is that his path to recovery is a lot different from my own. He actually went through the 12 steps and AA and has found it has helped him immensely in his recovery. With his story being very different from my own, it was very insightful to hear how it has helped him and hear his own perspective on it.   We hope you’ll tune in to hear more about what led to Donny’s addiction, his path to recovery, his take on traditional recovery, how yoga aided him in his recovery, how the concepts in traditional recovery resonate with him, and how his past became his purpose!   Topics Discussed: [:44] Reading the review of the week! [1:33] Sophie shares one of her favorite quotes from Rupi Kaur. [7:02] The importance of allowing yourself to feel, sharing your feelings, and confronting the root cause of these feelings. [15:28] Choosing happiness and drowning out the negativity. [17:12] About today’s interview with and what we really liked about it! [30:33] One of the main reasons Donny thinks people go down the addiction route. [31:30] Donny tells the story of what led to his addiction. [39:30] What it was like for Donny in traditional recovery (12 steps), why the concept of being “powerless” resonates with him, and how his past became his purpose. [52:45] Donny explains why AA, 12 steps, and yoga works for him in maintaining his recovery. [1:01:53] Donny tells us about his transformational coaching program, The Shift. [1:05:38] What’s the best advice Donny has ever received? [1:06:11] What has been Donny’s proudest moment? [1:06:48] What has been one of Donny’s most difficult moments? Why Focusing on the Positive is a Decision

IGNTD

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2019 15:50

This week I’m here for a really simple — yet, important — topic. This is something that I deal with, with many of my clients — and that is, making the decision to focus on the positive.   When I was at my lowest point, I considered myself a realist. I was proud of the fact that I saw things exactly as they were. And for me, at the time, that meant a pretty strong existential crisis. My whole world was focused on these dark topics with depressing themes, which I considered at the time to be a very realistic way to view the world.   Here’s the thing: I now know that what I considered a realistic and objective view of the world was not necessarily A) as valuable as I thought it was, and B) as honest and objective as I thought it was. So that’s what I really want to talk about with you all today: making the decision of where you put your focus on. Life will always have both positive and negative aspects, so where you put your focus makes all the difference.   Topics Discussed: [:01] About upcoming IGNTD events and offerings for September’s recovery month! [1:10] About this week’s episode. [1:48] My past struggle with being a ‘realist’; not focusing on the positive. [3:55] Here’s the thing: my past view of the world was not as realistic as I thought it was. [4:18] The problem with our search for objectivity and truth. [9:50] An important exercise for you all to begin focusing on the positives. [10:40] Life has both aspects: the positives and the negatives. Here’s what we have to get good at: making the decision to focus on the positive. [11:38] Here’s what happens when you begin working on this exercise. [12:01] The qualities of a person who focuses on the positive. [12:39] My question for you: what is it you want? Do you want to be right? Or do you want to be happy? [13:31] How focusing on the positive has helped me in my own life.   Mentioned in this Episode: IGNTD Recovery Month Promotions: [ALL MONTH LONG]: IGNTD Hero Nohab Reset Program Scholarships Application We are giving away 10 scholarships to our “Nohab” Reset Program that gives you full-year access to the course that will help you discover your path to true success, identify your subconscious barriers, and reset your subconscious scripts. Rewriting Recovery with Mishka Shubaly

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 11, 2019 77:48

Welcome to our second episode in our recovery month! Today we have another incredible guest, Mishka Shubaly. Mishka is a bestselling author, cult songwriter, and storyteller. After receiving an expensive MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, Mishka promptly realized he was more interested in playing music in dive bars than writing. He lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring non-stop, and shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and many others! He’s become a cult favorite, opening nationally for comedy iconoclast, Doug Stanhope; penning the soundtrack for The Unbookables documentary, and headling the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour. His most recent record, “Coward’s Path,” has even won praise from Johnny Depp and Joe Perry.   But perhaps the most interesting aspect of Mishka is the incredible recovery journey that led him to where he is today. He’s lived through some traumatic life experiences and is a great example of how, as a kid, when your painful life experiences are simply brushed under the rug from those around you, it can lead to dangerous coping mechanisms and addiction.   This month is all about spreading the awareness of how everyone has their own path to recovery, and Mishka’s story illustrates this so well. He has been through a lot, so we’re sure when you hear his story — and learn about all that he struggled with and how he got to the other side — you’ll have even more hope in your own recovery journey.   We truly hope when you hear this episode you’ll also discover your own way to move forward and recover — just as Mishka has.   Topics Discussed: [:37] Kicking off the podcast with our review of the week! [1:22] Sophie reads an inspirational quote for us. [3:02] Some of our future IGNTD events and offerings this month! [5:53] About this episode’s interview with our incredible guest, Mishka Shubaly. [7:58] Our approach to recovery and how we help those struggling with our online offerings. [10:22] The main message of this recovery month. [12:45] More about today’s guest, Mishka Shubaly. [13:10] Screenshot this episode, tag us and Mishka, and let us know what most resonated with you in this episode! [14:46] Welcoming Mishka Shubaly to the podcast! [15:31] If Mishka could meet any historical figure, living or deceased, who would it be and why? [16:30] How a sustained dialogue affects how people think. [18:32] Mishka speaks about all that he does to avoid working a classic ‘9–5.’ [20:54] Mishka tells us about his background that led him to who he is today. [25:35] Mishka recounts his experience surviving a school shooting and how it affected him. [32:22] How divorce and changes have affected us and our children. [35:00] Mishka recounts a beautiful experience about teaching his younger cousin, Kai, about death and loss. [40:06] How Mishka coped with the pain from divorce and the school shooting. [43:27] Why it is worse to not acknowledge something than to have the tough conversation. [46:53] Why Mishka didn’t go the traditional route of AA for his recovery. [51:17] The moment Mishka quit drinking and why he never relapsed. [55:30] What really helped manage Mishka’s stress and kept him sober. [59:46] Why Mishka’s recovery story is both incredibly unique and not — and the important message that brings along. [1:07:07] What is the best advice Mishka has ever received? [1:07:49] What has been Mishka’s proudest moment? [1:09:05] What has been Mishka’s most difficult moment? [1:10:23] What are some of Mishka’s self-care rituals? We're so excited to welcome world-renowned Health Coach and Chewing Queen, Robyn Youkilis. As a former serial dieter herself, Robyn struggled with binge eating, weight, and poor body image her entire life. One day, she decided enough was enough and enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Health to become a Health Coach. Little did she know that nutrition would become her soul's calling. There, Robyn channeled her love of food and cooking into food and lifestyle tools that empowered her as well as her future coaching clients to heal from the inside out, starting with the gut. As soon as her clients ate more mindfully and cleaned up their gut health, their psychological, social and spiritual lives also improved. As Robyn poignantly said, “A powerfully functioning gut relates to a powerful gut instinct.”   When we're in a constant state of anxiety, especially around food, we're not only holding onto emotions but also gripping our organs tightly, inhibiting them from executing their intended job. One of the ways we can release tension in the body and mind during mealtime is to chew slowly. Oftentimes, we chew three to five times per bite before swallowing, burdening our stomachs and digestive tract; instead, Robyn suggests that we chew until our saliva has had a chance to break down our food.   Robyn also recommends that we explore a gut reset cleanse to give our digestive system a chance to reset and repair, while simultaneously alleviating brain fog. Since 90% of serotonin - the brain's “happy” hormone – is created in our bellies, it's no surprise that our gut health directly relates to our psychological wellbeing. When the bacteria in our gut are happy, we're happy and healthy. It's as simple as that. That power of intuition we all have can also apply in eating intuitively to heal our gut and improve our digestive health. To explain how we can develop our intuition towards making the right food choices, my guest, Author of Thin From Within and The Go with Your Gut Way to Lose Weight, Robyn Youkilis will dive into that and more in this episode. Ideal Figure Robyn Youkilis’ journey began when she was just 13 years old. It was a time when her body started to have a defined shape. Hence, she started getting conscious especially because magazines featured women who supposedly had the ideal form. It ended up that Robyn Youkilis thought there was something wrong with her body and that she needed to fix her body. Because of this, she started looking into the diet culture. “At the same time, my mother was always an incredible cook, whipping up wonderful dishes. So, I always had a deep love and appreciation for food. However, it also led to the torment,” recalls Robyn Youkilis. It eventually confused Robyn Youkilis through her teenage years until her 20s. But when she started dating her then boyfriend who is now her husband, Robyn Youkilis learned how to buy her food at the Farmer’s Market. Turning Points Another turning point was when Robyn Youkilis went to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. She enrolled in the school as she started getting into cooking more for herself and her boyfriend. It was here when Robyn Youkilis made the connection between how she ate and how it was making her feel. But the real turning point was when Robyn Youkilis and her husband talked about starting a family. Little by little, she shed more of that obsession and more of that unhealthy view of self. Robyn Youkilis eventually brought in more nourishing food, cooking for herself and connecting to who she already was. Create Your Space Robyn Youkilis’ job as a health practitioner and an individual is to create a little space. She advises people to create some support and some lightness around showing up for yourself in that change. “Create a space so you can have this consistent conversation with yourself. When you have these little turning points along the way, they can serve you instead of taking you down,” Robyn Youkilis said. She adds, “Everyone deserves to feel amazing in their body. And your body wants that for you. No matter what you feed it, your body will digest it for you. We can’t have our focus on so many different things. You have to think about it and feel it as well.” Listening To Your Intuition First, Robyn Youkilis says we must understand that it’s going to be a winding path and it may take some time. She usually likes to teach this practice to clients where you put one hand on your lower abdominal wall and let that go. “A lot of us spend a lot of our day sucking it in, especially women. And it’s really about giving yourself a moment to breathe into that space. At that point, ask yourself what would make you feel most supported,” said Robyn Youkilis.  She adds, “You have the answer already. Often, we’ll hear a little helpful voice from our intuition.”  Robyn Youkilis says journaling is also good because it means your thoughts have space and they feel valid. You may not do anything with those thoughts. But just having a place for that helps, rather than turning to food to experience comfort, space or a place. “In learning to listen to your intuition, you would learn to figure out what feels more supportive in a given situation,” Robyn Youkilis said. “For example, having a grounding practice like taking a bath when you go home for the day can help you feel supported instead of turning to food.” Understanding Your Cravings According to Robyn Youkilis, a healthy craving feels like it’s something nice to have. And a craving that you might want to gather a little more information on is one that feels like you have to have it. There might be a nutritional deficiency going on there, or it might be something around your day. Ultimately, Robyn Youkilis says it takes little moments from our day where we can start to have that conversation more deeply with ourselves. Eating Using Intuition Robyn Youkilis loves all kinds of food. But it doesn’t have a grip on her because she says her diet now is much more supportive of her gut and her body. “Focus on the gut because that is the center of your body. Our digestive system is responsible for so many things on even more than just digesting food,” explains Robyn Youkilis. Having A Healthy Gut A healthy gut better absorbs the nutrients from the food you’re eating. Robyn Youkilis believes you get more out of what you’re consuming. You’re going to feel better from that food. A healthy gut also means a happier you because 90% of our serotonin is produced in your gut. And 80% of our immune tissue is in our gut. “Aside from the mental conversation going on, there’s a lot at play. Something that may serve you this month may be different next month,” said Robyn Youkilis. “So, know that there’s never going to be the one thing that’s going to fix all the things. It’s always going to be a lot of parts of this conversation.” To have a healthy digestive system, Robyn Youkilis also reveals that it is ideal for releasing waste at least once a day.  She recommends a huge glass of water first thing in the morning and gives your system a chance to flush itself out. For others, it may be a dehydration issue for our colon. Importance Of Hydration Juicing organic celery first thing in the morning is quite trendy. Robyn Youkilis says there are some medicinal benefits, but she believes that part of the reason why it’s working so well for so many people is that it’s hydrating their body on a cellular level. Robyn Youkilis says adding chia seeds to water is also helpful. Chia seeds act as a lubricant and essentially allow your organs and the cells of your body to integrate the hydration into your body. A pinch of Himalayan sea salt or lemon water can also help with hydration. “The ultimate goal is to connect to our intuition more so that we can digest not just our food, but we can digest our lives,” said Robyn Youkilis. Importance Of Chewing Robyn Youkilis stresses that another important thing is how you chew your food. Take time to eat your food well. It’s a miracle worker. “The science behind that is because our stomach does not have teeth. It wasn’t designed to break down whole chunks of food the way we usually do it,” Robyn Youkilis explained.  Robyn Youkilis also says some foods are harder to digest like nuts, dried fruit or some leafy greens. That’s why raw, dense, leafy greens are going to cause a little bit of bloating or stomach upset. Red meat is also hard to break down. Meal Prep Meal prep for Robyn Youkilis means making some basics ahead of time. A lot of people take this further and meal prep specific meals. But in Robyn Youkilis’ book, she teaches readers first to boil an egg and roast two trays of vegetables. “Prep your greens and keep in the fridge, ready to go. Once you have done these basic items, I also talk about a power parfait in the book. It’s like an amped up yogurt bowl so that you feel full longer,” said Robyn Youkilis. Robyn Youkilis does meal preps for the week, and when it’s time to put it together, she will use a basic template. The Rule of Five Plates is part of what she teaches in her book. “I would have the power parfait in the morning, mix and match based on this little light template for lunch. Dinner will be some prepped things. Keep it simple and get real with your meal prep. It’s about having these staples ready in the fridge,” advises Robyn Youkilis. For me, the Panasonic infrared oven significantly made meal prep easier. The oven heats things fast like two to three minutes. I use glass containers without the lid. It heats up way more than a microwave would, so you have to use a mitt. Rule Of Five Plates Robyn Youkilis has a meal prep class showing how she meal preps and walks you through it. She does the templates from the Rule of Five Plates mostly for lunches. One template is greens. Raw or steamed is fine. Mix up the greens. The next template is healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, butter, coconut oil or some good healthy fat. Sliced almonds or goat cheese is also good. The third template is protein. Wild salmon, grass-fed beef, organic chicken, lentils, trout, sardines, smoked mussels are sustainable options. Know what you have and know what your resources are. Number four is fermented foods. That is where the gut health comes in, and it’s going to be the food that helps you digest the other foods better. Fermented foods can be raw fermented sauerkraut, fermented carrots, radishes or kimchi. “I have some recipes in the book that’s easy to do. Fermented food is rich in live probiotic bacteria which will feed on the good bacteria in your gut and create a happy, healthy microbiome,” Robyn Youkilis said. The last template is a cooked vegetable. This is where the meal prep comes back into play. It could be anything from cubed sweet potatoes, roasted zucchini or roasted carrots. Ultimately, you can do so many different things using the templates. “For dinner, you can have a bean pasta with some tuna and kale. And then I would eat some of my fermented radishes on the side,” said Robyn Youkilis. “I’m always thinking more greens, healthy fats and fermented food. Also, know when you need new inspiration to shift things up.” She adds, “I don’t want you to feel bad about what you’re doing or not doing. You got this. Life is always changing, but you can do it. You are designed to thrive, heal and to feel good.” Bio Robyn Youkilis is changing the way thousands of women and men around the world relate with food, and she’s redefining what it means to eat and be healthy.  Robyn Youkilis is a Certified Wellness Expert, TV personality, and author. Robyn is the perfect mash up of health expert and your good-advice-giving girlfriend. She talks about fermentation just as easily as she talks about flatulence. It’s all good. No need to be embarrassed, folks. Here's some of what we covered with Robyn: ·     Here we go again with the gut health! We just can’t talk about it enough and neither can Robyn Youkilis. We have so much in common! ·     The first thing we clear up is that, despite her last name, she is not Greek—she’s Jewish. Zoe thought she was going to have a new Greek BFF, but, alas. ·     Hippocrates – also Greek – said all disease begins in the gut. Good thing it’s only thousands of years later and we’re just now revisiting this point. Geez. ·     We talk about how 90% of your serotonin – your brains happy hormone – is produced in YOUR GUT. ·     Should I eat that cupcake? Robyn would answer: What’s your gut say? We would answer: Robyn, if it’s, say, our birthday, can’t we just eat the cupcake and stop listening to that backseat driver? Just for today. ·     She explains how to ferment your own veggies – it’s super easy. You know how every now and then you get lucky and have a conversation with someone who just “gets” you, your journey and how your brain works? Well, today’s guest, Robyn Youkilis checked that box. Growing up in a family that used food as a source of love, comfort and connection, I could completely relate. Don’t get me wrong this is a great thing, however the breaking point for Robyn (and myself) is when we started gaining weight and that warm, fuzzy connection went away and instead turned into a difficult connection.   Once she made this realization, Robyn set out to create a new conversation around food and weight. She didn’t want to view things as “good” or “bad,” rather she wanted to slow things down and figure out what foods would best support her body.   After much trial and error (that still happens on a daily basis), she now teaches others that it’s OK if you don’t have it all figured out – it may even take decades. It’s all about finding a formula that works for your body and adheres to what your intuition is telling you and keeps you in alignment. She also touches on how motherhood impacted her relationship with food and how it led to an impactful shift in her life then and now.   I had such a great time connecting with Robyn during this conversation. If you’re someone who struggles with your relationship with food, this episode is a must listen (and her book, Thin from Within, a must read).   --   Question Highlights: What is your life philosophy and how did you get to this place? What did the process of slowing down look for you? How has food become a foundation for everything you’re doing? What’s something in your life right now that you’re so excited about that you weren’t able to do before because food/body was taking up so much space in your brain? What is lighting you up the most right now? What is a question you wish more people would ask you? Robyn Youkilis, a certified wellness expert, author of the best-selling book Go with Your Gut, and leading authority on gut health and weight loss.  Robyn’s new book which we talk about on this episode, Thin From Within - The Go with Your Gut Way to Lose Weight is part coaching guide and part cookbook, with 75 delicious recipes, to help readers optimize their digestion and shed weight from the inside out. Robyn teaches you how to feel comfortable, confident and energized in their bodies, and how stubborn weight can melt away when they learn to tune into their gut. Robyn has been featured on Today Show, The Cooking Channel, CBS News, and many more media outlets. Can you talk a little about your book? What is it about? Her aim of writing book was to make people passionate about making changes in their lives. She wanted people to have a conversation around the word ‘thin’ in a new way. She aims to promote self-love through her book. She has not used the word ‘thin’ in reference to a body type but because we have just developed an ideal with the word ‘thin’. She wanted to connect with women who were still chasing this ideal consciously or sub-consciously. She does not talk about weight in terms of the number on a scale but more of what it is an individual is chasing. According to Robyn, a desire to lose weight means we want something different in our bodies and something different in our lives. She talks about meal preparation and food recipes in the book that can help you lose weight. Can you tell us about the benefits of fermented foods? Fermented foods are typically raw and have some pro-biotic nature in them. Fermented foods are good for your microbiome. A microbiome is a bacterium that resides in and on your body. It is responsible for a number of body processes that help our body run and function properly. What was one of your first jobs? The first job she had was when she was in high school. She was a ski instructor and rock-climbing instructor. She also worked as a babysitter while in high school. How did you get into health coaching? Robyn says she did not follow traditional route to becoming a health coach. It was not something she wanted to do from her childhood. She was doing odd jobs before going into college and she was also interested in acting. She did musicals as a kid and loved theater as well. However, she opted for international law in college mainly because she always had an eye for atrocities and wanted to help people around the globe. Later, she worked for UN for some time and in local non-profits doing criminal court work. She eventually found her way to Los Angeles and did small acting gigs over there. She started to get into cooking and food. She came across this nutrition school, The Institute for Integrative Nutrition which is considered as the world’s largest nutrition school. She enrolled in one of their programs and graduated as a certified health coach. She opened up a health coaching practice after she graduated. It has been nine years and Robyn has not looked back. Did you ever think you would write a book? Robyn says she was never a good writer. She recalls her time in high school when her best friend used to help her in work that involved any sort of writing. Robyn says writing books was something that really happened on its own once she started to list down all the things she was offering to her clients in her programs. How did you end up getting a book deal? Alex Jamieson, a famous food chef and health counselor who also happens to be Robyn’s friend invited her to a conference. Alex introduced Robyn to a literary agent over there and told the agent about Robyn’s work. That agent helped Robyn create her proposals for different publishers. Robyn eventually got a book deal with a publisher through her agent and was able to publish both her books through the same publisher. What failure later became a success in your work? She was very hesitant in doing group coaching programs in the first five years of her practice. Initially, she tried group coaching programs but was not very successful in it as only one or two people would sign for it. She decided to drop this idea of group coaching and went solo coaching for the next few years. Eventually, she launched her first successful group coaching program Rockstar Roadmap, it was a huge success. It felt fun, she didn’t feel it was forced. What is the best advice you have ever been given? The best advice she was given was by Joshua Rosenthal who is the founder of The Institute of Integrative Nutrition who said: “Life is a long time”. It simply means that you don’t have to do all the things at the same time, you need to go slowly and steadily. You can do different things in different phases of your life. Any final thoughts you would like to share with the audience?  Robyn advises everyone to take a moment every day just to connect with themselves. Say something nice to yourself before going to bed or in the morning. How can we connect with you? You can find more about her work and her books through her website. Her website’s URL is https://www.robynyoukilis.com

Jordan chats with Robyn Youkilis, an expert in holistic digestive health and the author of two incredible gut health books, (https://rstyle.me/n/cxcxtcbejn7) . Despite many mutual friends, Jordan and Robyn met while recording this ep… but you would never guess based on the energy in this episode (#FriendsAtFirstSight)!! Robyn has an AMAZING, intuitive ability to connect on a deep level with the people she’s talking to and working with, as you’ll see when she asks a few questions (and gets responses!) from Jordan’s body! Robyn also answers all of Jordan’s questions about balancing the flora in our gut and just generally treating our tummies as best as possible, and then we dig into her new book. Jordan LOVES how Robyn is disrupting the conversation around being thin – because thin isn’t a dirty word, it’s simply a feeling from within! The feeling of LIGHTNESS and vibrancy. Robyn is empowering people to find their happiest, healthiest, and most vibrant sense of self, and we are stoked to share that with all of you! We’d like to thank our sponsor, HUM Nutrition! Jordan has been talking about them on the blog for YEARS because they help her feel amazing, and she wants you to know about them too! HUM is an all-natural line of supplements, and their goal is to use science-based and clinical-backed nutrition as a tool for helping people feel amazing. We love how they focus on inner beauty, and holistically approaching outer beauty concerns from within! When you go to HUMNutrition.com, don’t forget to use the discount code SOUL at checkout to get 20% off your first order! Jordan also wants to tell you about something she’s been loving lately: Woo for Play, an incredible, all-natural, coconut oil-based lube. We love it for SO many reasons, but our favorite thing is that it empowers women to bring a sexual health product into the bedroom (without making the bedroom any less fun) – and it’s so good for your body that it’s literally edible! Dieting sucks. Let's just be honest about that. Holidays, birthdays, and even just a Friday night out with friends means we are all often surrounded by tempting foods that are not perhaps the best for our midsections. How can we easily navigate the endless food options that always appear in front of us at the worst times? For Robyn Youkilis, she understands this struggle. She also recently had her first child and had to re-shift her thinking as she set realistic goals in returning to her normal pre-baby weight. Regarding the struggle of losing weight, sometimes people can become hard on themselves if the results aren't immediate. How can we push back against this mentality of wanting and needing quick weight loss?

The weird thing about the internet is that you can discover people and without meeting them in person know quite a lot their tastes, interests, and life. If you follow them long enough you start to feel like you  eventually even feel like you're friends. Of course you're not fully friends because they know nothing about you. Today's conversation is one of the rare (yet becoming more frequent for me) occasions where an internet friend becomes a real friend live on the podcast (over Skype in this case). I've been getting to know Christine for years through being entertained by her Vlogs, discovering new music & brands through her favorites videos, style tips from her daily uniform series, and feeling inspired from her apartment tours & intimate interviews on YouTube. I'm so glad this conversation lived up to my expectation of what Christine would be like live. She was ever bit as thoughtful, earnest, and wise as she comes off in the hundreds of YouTube videos. While Christine went to film school and began on YouTube when she was just 18 she's an eclectic creative who has interests ranging from home decor to film photography to make-up to design. We get into everything from a cultivating a career as a creative freelancer to recovering after a tough breakup to handling aging and body image and creating community. We talk about style and religion and family and travel and everything in between. Full show notes:: here The coolest thing about the internet is how it allows you to connect with people all over the world you otherwise may never known. While I only met Tero Isokauppila for the first time this summer when we recorded this conversation in person while he was here in New York, we've been friends on the internet since early 2013. Tero's from Finland and founded the popular superfood mushroom brand Four Sigmatic over five years ago. While I've loved Four Sigmatic's products ever since I was one of the first bloggers in America to try them, my knowledge on the fungi kingdom, foraging, and the benefits of utilizing mushrooms was limited until this conversation. Wellness wise, we got identifying adaptogens, how to use powerful herbs, ‘mushroom hacks’, and why not all water is created equal. He answered everything I was curious about in the fascinating fungi kingdom. Beyond mushrooms we had a meandering conversation where we discussed everything from entrepreneurship,  inclusivity in the wellness industry, the importance of family, cultural and education system differences in other countries, his life growing up in Finland and moving to the States, his thoughts on living in New York City, and his journaling, reflection/gratitude practice. Tero is a great guy and I loved finally meeting him in person and getting to record this episode. His new book Healing Mushrooms which you'll hear a bit about in this episode is out now and it's as great as he is. My favorite part of being in New York are all the interesting, creative, talented people I serendipitously meet. Some of them, like today's guest Dr. Emily I know immediately after meeting them that I've made a life friend. Not only are we both from Michigan, Emily and I connected right off the bat over a million similar interests, mutual friends, and ideas for collaborations. Her expertise of the human body and her feminine approach to chiropractic are unmatched. She's a chiropractor and founder of Midtown Manhattan's Urban Wellness Clinic, where sure curates a team of expert healers from a personal trainer (shout out Trainer Matt who is the best!), to an acupuncturist, to a masseuse. It was her dream to built this clinic in New York and we get into the goal setting and visioning of how she made that dream reality.  We discuss ways fitness can be harmful to the body, reprogramming bad body patterns, the body working holistically, the importance of breathing and belly breathing, “tech neck”, bio hacks for everything from walking, sitting, and looking at our devices. She's not only highly skilled, she's warm, empathetic, and articulate. The story of how she met her husband is an auditory romantic comedy. You'll love her, I sure do. Today on the show I am going to be talking about chewing your food with Robyn Youkillis! Robyn wrote this amazing book called, Go with your Gut, that is half cookbook with vegan and paleo recipes and talks about the connection between your gut and your “gut instinct”. Most people don’t realize that they are not in the moment when they are eating so they just keep eating and eating. Robyn explains that if you just take time to look at what you’re eating, breathe and chew your food until its mush your digestive system or “gut” will be much happier. At a young age she struggled and had an unhealthy outlook on food. She saw her mother hide food from her dad and then saw her dad sneaking food.  She talks about her ups and downs, “good and bad rollercoaster” journey. She went from eating less junk and losing weight to eating out of boredom and eating the wrong things. She attended The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and really spent a few years after graduation really trying different healthy foods and trying to find what worked for her in changing her relationship with food. I am thrilled about today’s episode of The Wellness Wonderland Radio, where every week I share interviews with wellness extraordinaires. Today I’m honored to have one of my biggest mentors,  Robyn Youkilis of Your Healthiest You. Robyn is a holistic health coach, body image expert for The Today Show, Ayurveda expert, and Quinn’s other half in their amazing collaboration in the kitchen  {Healthy} Cooking Camp with Robyn + Quinn. In this conversation with Robyn, we cover so much including what to eat late at night, go-to easy meals, body image and mindful eating practices. We mention a plethora of links & takeaways: -We chat about how Chia Pudding is the perfect night-time snack or for some extra energy during the day. Here’s a link to my super simple  chia pudding video & Robyn’s awesome recipe for chia pudding. -We talk how some recipes we can just eat over & over like her Easy Lemon Red Lentil Soup ( a fav of Gabrielle Bernstein) -She mentions this {Healthy} Cooking Camp spring salad. This slim-down spring detox salad has me drooling, it looks so nourishing and yummy! -We honestly discuss how mindful eating can be hard. Here’s the link to Robyn’s amazing blog post on it that I mention & my post on the eating awareness guidelines we had to follow in my yoga teacher training visualized. -And we also mention how labels are stupid & Robyn reveals her amazing journey to being a rad health/kitchen/wellness/body image guru, that I look up to so much. Don’t just read the cliff notes! There’s so much more great info in the interview so download it by right clicking the golden dot below or listen right on YouTube.
