"You read the book, you have a visceral reaction to things, you take note of it, and you bring it to the author..."In anticipation of Shelley Thompson's novel Roar hitting shelves, Emma and Cyn take the opportunity to learn more about the process behind the publication of this fiercely anticipated novel. This episode, we're taking a peek into the world of sensitivity reading, and the sorts of insights this process gives to authors looking to properly represent marginalized communities in their works of fiction. Emma and Cyn are joined by Ronnie Ali, a Registered Psychotherapist, Diversity and Wellness Consultant in the arts and entertainment production, a Trauma-Informed Practice Specialist with Challenge Accepted, and Clinical Supervisor at the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy. Due to these exceptional qualifications and her insightful nature, Ronnie was chosen to be a sensitivity reader for Roar, and worked closely with Shelley Thompson to deliver a narrative that felt respectful, gripping, and authentic to the trans experience. Outside of her work as a sensitivity reader, Ronnie focuses on ending cycles of violence by addressing the roots of oppression and discrimination through research, psychoeducation, social programming, mindfulness training, and consultation services. It was the Summer of No TV - Rachel grew up, her and her twin sister on a farm in Kentucky, when one television-free summer books became her entertainment and an immersive reading experience. “It's right there in the beginning of the book,” she says, “but I wanted readers to connect a little bit with the character, sighted readers, before they realize what sets her apart from themselves..” She did the research, read their blogs, and wrote the book “Love Unseen” and we talk about what she learned throughout her research process writing a main character who is blind, how she decided to have a sensitivity reader for the book, and what it was like working with Kerry. In einem der Kinderbücher des britischen Autors Roald Dahl statt fett heißt es nun kräftig, James Bond soll in der Neuauflage der Romane nicht mehr so sexistisch sein: Ist das Zensur oder zeitgemäß? Und was macht diese Debatte mit unserem Verständnis von Literatur und Autorschaft? “Es gibt Editionswissenschaften, wenn ich die Texte wirklich so lesen will, wie sie ursprünglich erschienen sind, kann ich das machen”, sagt Aşkın-Hayat Doğan. Er ist professioneller Sensitivity Reader, jemand der Bücher mit Blick auf Stereotype und realistische Darstellungen lektoriert - immer nur als Vorschlag, nie als Vorschrift. “Literatur darf immer noch alles.” Aber er betont auch: “Literarische Originalität ist nicht wichtiger als die Verletzung, die der Text bei anderen anrichtet.” Wenn es um Änderungen an bereits publizierten Texten geht, ist Jens Jessen, ehemaliger Literaturchef der ZEIT, kritischer: “Natürlich dürfen scheußliche Gestalten in Romanen oder Theaterstücken auftauchen. Auf die Spitze getrieben hieße das sonst, wir landen wieder bei einer strengen Zensur wie im 17. Jahrhundert.” Die Autor*innen hätten vor 100 oder 200 Jahren eben nicht so geklungen wie wir heute. Sören Sieg hat als begeisterter Couchsurfer Afrika bereist. Begeistert ist er auch von afrikanischer Musik, und er liebt die Menschen in Afrika, wie sein charmantes Buch „Oh, wie schön ist Afrika“ zeigt. Doch aus der Begeisterung sollte durch einen Korrekturvorgang, der sich Sensitivity Reading nennt und Teil einer aggressiven Anti-Rassismus-Agenda ist, mit der Falschbeschuldigungen produziert werden, ein farbloser Null ouvert entstehen. Zum Glück hat das Manuskript fast alle Angriffe überstanden, Sören Sieg hat einen Sieg davongetragen. Doch das Unheil des Sensitivity Readings ist damit nicht aus der Welt.

Diversität ist in aller Munde. Wie schaffen wir mehr Vielfalt in allen Bereichen unserer Gesellschaft - unabhängig von Geschlecht, sozialer, kultureller, weltanschaulicher oder ethnischer Herkunft? Kunst und Kultur sind gute Gradmesser, um zu erkennen, wo wir gerade stehen. Ein paar Stichproben: wir begleiten junge Kuratorinnen auf ihrem "Interventionspfad" durch die Ausstellungsräume des Historischen Museums in Frankfurt, fragen nach beim transkulturellen Orchesterprojekt "Bridges - Musik verbindet" und schalten uns in die Debatte über das sog. "Sensitivity Reading" ein, das die Inhalte von Literatur diverser gestalten möchte.

Previously: Bob appears to Mist in a dream, and shows him the capture of The Revenge by pirate-turned-privateer Jonathan Barnet. Anne and Read fight to the last, Bob is shot in battle, and dies in Mist's arms. Mist then awakes, incarcerated in Barnet's house, where a raging Barnet tells him that he is planning to torture Anne and Read for the location of Rackham's treasure - but, Scratby insists, only after 4 o'clock tomorrow, as the pirates are scheduled to be visited by a high-paying baroness. Barnet then makes Mist a fugitive by exposing treasonous documents collected from his lodgings. Mist is then rescued from captivity by Bess, who helps him escape through Barnet's window, and hides him at her gaff. Meanwhile, Anne hoodwinks a well-meaning turnkey into delivering a coded letter to Mist that outlines her plan to escape Newgate, with Read at her side...
