There's one little program that I could not do my work without … Git. And, so, our digital world needs to say a great thanks to the wonderful Linus Torvalds. In fact, without him, our digital world would be a whole lot more locked-down and controlled by large and faceless companies. Without Linus, we would probably now be dominated by Microsoft Windows, and your car and your mobile phone would probably be running Windows for its interface (yuk!). And if the software in your car crashed — as it would likely do on a regular basis — you might possibly have to connect a keyboard to your instrument panel and press Ctrl-Alt-Del. Your TV, too, would possibly boot up into Microsoft Windows, and you'd need a mouse to control it. And our world of servers would possibly mainly be running on Microsoft IIS and use MS SQL databases. And, to back up your code, you would need a licence for Microsoft Backup 3.1, and where you dragged your folders over to make updates. Possibly, the command line terminal would have been dropped in favour of GUI (Graphical User Interface) approaches. So, just as in the famous advert from Apple in 1984 which illustrated the smashing of a Big Brother screen, Linus smashed the world of Windows — sorry for the pun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfqw8nhUwA And, so rather than a world of Microsoft Windows, our world is full of Linux and associated distributions. For this, he wrote the first version of the Linux kernel and wrote the original version of Linux with pure machine code. I suppose there is something in the DNA for the Finnish people, that wants to be open about things, and not close them down with patents and restrictions. Git So, while the creation of Linux is possibly one of the greatest advancements in Computer Science. There is something even better … Git. With Git we have a version control system of code and documents. I use it every day, and it saves me so much time and effort. I use it in so many ways, including archiving my code and updating my Golang libraries. At its core is a smart way of keeping track of any version of a file and the difference between them. Linus wrote Git in 2005 for his Linux kernel but is now maintained by Junio Hamano. At its core, each host maintains a complete repository of all the files it has archived and how they have been modified. This differs from the client-server-based approach of code repositories, as the tracking can be done independently from a server. With Git, you end up with some commands that are hard-wired into your memory. We use “git add .” to add new files, then “git commit -m ‘New update'” to search for changes in the files, and then finally a “git push” to upload the new versions. Then a “git pull” to get things back. Anyone who has ever lost their code or created a bad version will know the power of using Git to recover things. Three basic commands are thus: git add .git commit -m "My new update"git push But, it's not just code it can archive; it can archive many different document types, and it particularly likes mark-up documents such as LaTeX. Overall, Microsoft Word is terrible for version control, as the file is encapsulated in a Zip file. Many developers thus use LaTex and archive with Git. The great advantage of this is — just like Wiki's — we can trace the updates through text. It also allows us to easily share documents and allow collaborative work (as Git can keep a track of the update). And, for large files which are more than GBs in size there is Git Large File Storage (LFS) — git-lfs. And, so, if we were to start the Internet again, possibly LaTeX and Git would be used to create our documents, and we would have no Microsoft Word. In fact, we would probably not need Microsoft Windows, as our world would be open-sourced with the use of Linux. While Linux has always struggled to compete with Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX, it is open and free. The code for Linux, too, is open to all to examine and update. People often maintain open-source software as they have a real belief in its power and in how it frees us from the dominance of large and powerful companies. Not just for source code There are so many use cases of using Git that are not just versioning code. For my own teaching, I use Git to push my PowerPoint slides, source code and labs. Students can easily download the whole module at the start of the course and thus just to a “git pull” for any updates. Students, too, can mark typos in the material. You can find this at: https://github.com/billbuchanan/appliedcrypto Another interesting example is the District of Columbia and which publishes its laws through Git. This allows everyone involved to keep track of changes in the law and also spot errors and typos. If you are interested, the laws are marked up with XML and available at: https://github.com/DCCouncil/law-xml This, though, is the definitive source of the law, and not a copy from another system, and where a “pull request” allows someone to update a document, and then for the maintainer to review and change, if required. Conclusions To, me, Git is the one tool I could not do my work without. I love it, as I don't need a fancy GUI, I just drop down to the console and let my fingers to the walking. And, so, just like smashing Big Brother, Linus smashed a closed digital world and free us from the control of software. If we were to start the computer and software industry again, it would be Linus' route we would take and not the closed-source world of big business. If not for Git, we would probably be using Microsoft Backup 3.1 and dragging our files from one place to the next.

Believe it or not, if you've been feeling like you just can't bring yourself to focus, are constantly battling procrastination, or even struggling with low mood, it's probably because you're not looking after your gut. In this episode I sit down for a conversation with Sophie Medlin, one of the UK's leading experts on gut health. Sophie is a dietitian, chair of the British Dietetic Association and a lecturer at King's College London. In the conversation we discuss how the connection between gut health and mental health has become an emerging area of research, how to feed your body with the right foods to optimise your cognitive performance and we also discuss weird and wonderful nutrition myths that have been circulating on social media over the past few years. You may have gone your whole life and not thought once about your existence, meaning and purpose of life. Well, in a world run by satanism that is by no means an accident. The soul is the highest prize, yet humanity walks around as though it is an afterthought, if that. This lesson is important for your own souls evolution, take it seriously and do the exercise. Write down the questions provided in this lesson, meditate on them, then reflect on your answers. After this, dedicate time to discovering, understanding and applying knowledge of a truth in your life. As you do this, you will begin your conscious growth journey and the renewal of your mind. No one is too busy to save their own soul. Dedicate the time and effort to learn about the nature of our reality and the purpose of life. Your TV program can wait, your soul, will not.
To say that TV show these days are mostly Left-leaning is an understatement. It's totally dominated by Wokeness at this point. How did this happen? In the end, I also gave some ideas of how to win back Television. Sit back, relax, and together, let's take back the culture. Your TV signal wobbles. An alien voice (albeit one with a Southern English accent...) seizes control of your set. And, instead of newsreader Andrew Gardner reporting on the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, you hear a voice claiming to be ‘Vrillon', of Ashtar Galactic Command, with a message for humanity.Such was the experience for viewers attempting to watch the ITV Evening News on Southern TV on 26th November, 1977 - an incident which became infamous in the ‘signal-jamming' pantheon of the twentieth-century. Nobody has ever claimed responsibility. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly compare ‘Vrillon' to its US counterpart, the ‘Max Headroom' incident; unpick the idea that the broadcast was part of the Raelian movement; and explain how Twitter ruined signal-jamming pranks forever... Episode 38- The Mindset of the Successful Job Search (Live Coaching) Lindsay 00:00I'm Lindsay Mustain, and this is the Career Design Podcast made for driven ambitious square pegs and round holes type professionals who see things differently and challenge the status quo. We obliterate obstacles and unlock hidden pathways to overcome and succeed where others have not stagnation feels like death. And we are unwilling to compromise our integrity and settle for being averaged in any way. We are the backbone of any successful business and those who overlook our potential are doomed to a slow demise. We do work that truly matters aligns with our purpose, and in turn, we make our lasting mark on the world. We are the dreamers, doers, legends and visionaries who are called to make our most meaningful contribution and love what we do. Lindsay 00:42So we're walking through, Abby, can you give me like the 92nd version of how we got to here today? And then we're gonna keep going from here. Abby 00:52So yeah, absolutely. So um, the ones who are joining to you guys already kind of know what we're talking about, I think, just career search, I had a career switch in 2021 was laid off due to the pandemic and went back to school, graduated recently and have been on the job hunt ever since. And it's been a little frustrating going through this process. For me, for the first time in over 16 years, I've been with the same company for a long, long time. So I feel a little lost in the woods, and was asked to reflect on my experience so far on this journey. And I wrote a piece that I published in medium, if you haven't checked it out, go look at it, it's posted on my LinkedIn as well. And it's just a reflection on what how I feel about the process and how it's been going for me so far, and put it up on LinkedIn. And I was blessed to have Adam Karpiak comment on it. So if you don't know him, go connect with him he's amazing. And he does a lot of really great things for those who are searching for careers to in with, you know, resume services and whatnot. So he's amazing. And he tagged me in it and just asked everyone in his network to read it, Lindsay was part of that network and that's how we got connected. And yeah, it resonated with a lot of people. And I think there's just many of us out there right now kind of feeling this. And so yeah, Lindsay asked me to be on her podcast and talk about my journey and see if we can't crack the code. Lindsay 02:21We are going to go into talking about mindset today. And I'm gonna say, mindset affects every single one of us. In fact, I'm going to be one of the things radical transparency is one of my, my mantras here. And so I'm going to tell you that somebody came back to us after last week and told me that I told Abby, that I sounded like a valley girl. Oh, my God, which is so funny, because I was. So um, I'm not really a valley girl. But let me just say, if I'm not your cup of tea, then get the heck off of here. And I don't need to hear from you anymore. The same thing goes with you in your job search that there are going to be people who are not going to resonate with you. And a lot of times we're like, What's wrong with me? Here's the deal. What's wrong with it, you is them not, not actually something wrong with you. So a lot of times, people were like, please, please pick me, I don't really care if you pick me. I know that if you decide to follow my advice, we get massive results. In fact, this first somebody just started a job after going through my program. The same program, we're actually Abby is going through right now. He had a 55% raise after being laid off for 12-15 months, 55% raised. And then I had another person who just gave notice yesterday, and she got $5,000 more than her highest end of the compensation target, which we go really high, actually, that's one of the secrets about negotiation. Stay tuned, guys, if you want to get the same kind of information, you're getting live coaching with me, literally Abby's journey here. So please make friend with her and follow me. So you can be here when I'm going live. So what I want to know what I'm telling you about is that mindset is one of the most important things in fact, when I talk about introducing mindset into what we do now, if we don't have the right mindset for success, we tend to be victims of this process. And so I am going to say something really radical right now. Life is always working for you. And I know sometimes that doesn't feel like it. It doesn't. In fact, somebody very dear to me got fired via text, yesterday. I'll go back one year ago today, I sat and some of you don't know this, but my brother was murdered in 2019. One year ago today, I sat and faced his killer and gave a deposition in court. I have chosen to see that as a chance for me to be successful and to help others because I know life is really finite. Okay. So whatever it is, life is working for you and I don't need to share all of the pain that I've had in order for you to recognize like I've been there so have you I didn't start out being awesome. That would have been amazing story. I was born I was awesome and then I've just continued to be awesome. No, I started out with a pretty privileged childhood. I watched my dad go through a layoff and then I happen to have the same thing happened in early in my career, even after being a recruiter and I learned how to kind of crack the code as Vicki said. So that's really what we're sharing today is how do we get into this process, which is somebody who's hired 10,000 people, so 10,343 people, that's what I'm gonna go through here today. And mindset is the key differentiator. In fact, if you go look, I think I talked about resiliency and job search back in circa 2016, which I was interviewed by SHRM, which is a society for human resource management, as an expert about this and resiliency is the thing and job searching that keeps you to stay above the rest. So you have to recognize that life is working. I'm going to go back to Hey, and Waseem is here from Pakistan. 3% increase and Lindsay's guidance help tremendously. And thank you so much, Vicki. So Vicki is amazing. I don't like to volunteer, if you're one of the people who've worked with me, but we have 1000s of testimonials. So this is I love these stories. That's why keeps me going. But I want you to know that nobody has to be particularly special or have a degree from you know, I don't know, yeal, or anything, actually, other than claiming your power. That's, that's what I'm going to walk you through here. And that's what we're doing with Abby. And so, in fact, I've seen some shifts, and Abby just in this last week, in some of the ways that she has approaching things and even some of the changes she's made in her her stuff now so far. So I'm going to say here, if you're not interested in what I have to say, then get the heck off my live stream, because I have no time to waste for people who aren't here to get results. Okay, same thing goes. If somebody is not treating you with respect in your life or your career, then get the heck out of their circle and recognize that that was a blessing, but they show their true colors firsthand. Okay, so I'm going to actually read to you the mantra that starts with what we do for intentional career design. So it is called the I am talent mantra, which says that I can see Oh, no, you can't see it. Well, if you were zoomed out, right behind me. The I Am talent mantra says I am human, I am not defined by a piece of paper, nor defined by a system that has been designed to set me up to fail. I persevere I believe in something better, I give, assist, uplift and empower others, I do not complain, but I take action, I understand that failure is necessary on the path to success. I give before I take I am accountable for my actions, my results and my attitude. I believe in the best in others, I rise to any challenge. And I do not make excuses. I am resilient. I have unwavering faith that I will rise above my circumstances. When I fall down, I get up and I keep moving. I believe I can help change the world for the better. So this is where I'm gonna ask you to go hashtag I am talent. If you'll do that in the chat for me, I'll know that you're here with me. And that you guys get what we're going to do at the very end, I'm actually going to give you an opportunity to join something that'll give you some free results right away. So if you want to fast track some of the work that you're doing, in fact, I've enjoyed it. And I don't know how it's been for going through dream job boot camp so far. Abby 07:57It's good. No, I think it was really helpful just to kind of, like supplemented the other things that I was doing with you as well. And I got a lot of messages from others who joined us last week that were going through it and they were you know, just what did you think of this? And then we kind of got to talk about what we were doing different and it was a really great, yeah, good, good chance to connect with some of the others who are trying like to change up, you know, whatever their, their resume or their, their profile on LinkedIn. And then we'd send it back and forth to each other, like, how does this look, you know, so it was a really cool, cool experience. I think it was definitely a few like lightbulb moments for me. Lindsay 08:33I love that. And so Bobby has behind the scenes of not just that but like my one of my highest tier paid programs. So she the fact that this free resource it was there to give you because for those that you don't know 80% of my business is run completely for free. I do everything with the idea I given given given to literally hurts we monetize a little bit of the rest. If you want to have faster results. We keep the lights on so we can feed our family one time. It's somebody who asked me, Why don't you do this for free? And I was like, so why don't you work for free? So sorry, folks, if you want the fastest results, you end up working with me personally. So if you're wanting to know what I do want you to is results, how do you get there faster, I have opportunities to work with me individually, you can work with me to apply or you can work with me on a free basis, using some of the tools I'm going to give you and that's what we do here. So if you're wondering what's in it for me, that's what's in it for me. But having the results that I get people who make an investment in their career tend to see that others will invest in them because if they believe they're worthy of it, then others are so if you're whatever you're doing to uplevel your career that tends to be how this process goes. So I'm gonna talk to you a little bit about intentional career design. So this is one of the things that I love Steve Jobs I you know, whenever you think of him as a leader, he was very visionary. And he talked about to the crazy ones. I'm going to talk to you about what that looks like here for what what career design really is about. And it's for driven ambitious square pegs and round holes type professionals who see things differently and challenge the status quo. We obliterate obstacles, and unlock hidden pathways to overcome and succeed where others have not stagnation feels like death. And we are unwilling to compromise our integrity and settle for being average in any way. We are the backbone of any successful business and those who overlook our potential are doomed to a slow demise. We choose to redo work that truly matters aligns with our purpose. In turn, we make our lasting mark on the world. We are the dreamers, doers, legends and visionaries who are called to make our most meaningful contribution and love what we do. This is actually what we what the career design podcast is all about. So if you haven't had a chance to tune into that, please go check out I have so many resources for you guys. It's been week, every time every week, I'm interviewing people and talking with some of the most amazing people out there who are making shifts and changes and have success so that you can get results. So tune in because that's what I'm doing and hit that follow button. Okay. Alright, so let me talk to you. I'm gonna teach a little bit and then we're gonna jump in. Abby 10:53I just want to say one thing real quick. Lindsay 10:54Yeah, go ahead, do it. Abby 10:55Um, so that intro like blew my mind when I heard it. And so if anyone else is listening here, and it is just, like, feel super empowered by that, like, just put like a in the chat? Lindsay 11:06Yeah, okay. Let's put a fire sign, or heck yeah, whatever it is. But let's see, let's call out the people who are the 1% of the 1%. Because most of us have been conditioned to stay small to play by the rules. And it's actually what's kept you small and being a cog in a machine when you are truly the designer of your reality. And I change that through occupation. That's how I do that. And I'm here to help you understand your true mindset like belief, which is marketability body says, awesome. So your marketability is what we're really going into inside of this. So when I talk about intentional career design, what am I really trying to do inside of this process, I'm trying to one reduce bias. So people who are being dinged for being laid off for extended period of absences, maybe you've been a stay at home mom or dad, you have been, you've had a career pivot, you are over 40 or 50, you don't have a college degree, whatever it is that your biases, there's over 150 human biases, the first thing we're trying to do intentional design is reduce bias. So slows down our process. We want to do that. So we were reducing the friction to velocity. So what we're trying to do is, this process is all about how do we streamline it. How do we become what we call the purple squirrel. And so what we're trying to do is increase that velocity. So let's get to results. Let's get it faster. Second, is to increase your power position. Okay, so low power positions means I hope to god somebody chooses me. And I'll be lucky if I make it through all this. And that is not the mindset of a successful job search. So what we're trying to do is increase our power position. So we know that we feel like we have some control in our life, which is a true like, we want certainty, that's a core human need. So that's one of them. And next is to embody that high caliber candidacy. And you have to become this high caliber candidate in order for people to what I'm really trying to get you to do is in the dream job zone, the right job, the right company at the right salary, that's really hard for some people to believe. But I mean, you've seen the results here just in what people post on the live stream, like I'm not making stuff up. This is actual real people who are talking about getting 40% increases 133% increase, or 55% increase from somebody who started yesterday, my goal is to help you get there. Abby 13:21That's the whole point of what you're saying right? Now, if you don't believe that it's possible, it's never gonna happen. Lindsay 13:26Yes, whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right. It's one of my when I was in gym class when I was in elementary school, and to Henry Ford, and at one point, I ended up being homeless as a child. That was on my wall in my elementary school. And it's one of the things whether or not you believe in Henry Ford or not, like, you know, in what his he wasn't necessarily the greatest leader, but he was very visionary. And that was one of things, I realized that you are not a product of your conditions, you are a product of your decisions, no matter what pain or what place you're at, you get to choose whether or not I'm going to increase my success, or I'm going to decrease my success. And that starts with mindset. Okay, and then next is become the candidate of choice. That's aka the purple squirrel. So we're trying to become a candidate of choice. So high caliber candidacy and next level is the candidate of choice, which means that people are banging down your door to give you a job offer and we go through career power, which you may or may not recall that from last week, which is the intersection of both passion and purpose, combined with the pursuit of what you're truly aligned in your zone of genius and to uplevel your career to create profitability for both you and the business. This is the thing, it's a win win, which is why I see career designing the system of the future of how companies will amplify their talent to create massive profitability, which is by helping people enjoy what they do do work that truly matters makes their most meaningful contribution. And they actually go to work passionate, excited and energized so they don't feel like they're selling their soul for a paycheck. Okay, so that's what we're trying to do. Now. I want to break down this and you guys tell me here that are watching right now. Which one of these relate to you because I think the traits of the high performer and this is one of the podcasts I do is I talk about the pains of Being a high performer, is one you are relentless. Okay, like I do not stop achieving my goals. Okay. And I know that Abby for you, I wanted to hear from you what these ones were for you? Yeah, you're goal oriented. Okay? Next is that you validate assumptions, meaning I don't just assume that, like, people were like, I am having age bias. And I'm gonna recognize there is age bias. But most of the time when I see age bias, and that victim mentality, and just remember I say this with love, everything here is with love. That's actually not the issue. The issue is that you believe it's the issue. So you do something to sabotage yourself because you believe that is okay. They also prioritize their goals. Okay, so that means that they don't choose to put others before themselves, they actually will prioritize their goals over everything else. They're looking for long term achievement. So always going for how do I uplevel my life, even if you get knocked down a peg, or stabbin, they're always are coming back up. They are never satisfied. Ooh, Nina says here, absolute what you decide what your destiny is, is by your decisions. Yeah, I've been asking a lot of things around spirituality, because I am very spiritual and what I do, and nice is asked like, do you believe in the law of attraction, but we're whether or not you believe in law of attraction, intention is super powerful. Okay, so what you intend, we tend to hit goals that we actually set for ourselves, whether or not usually that's law of attraction or just intentions? Either way, it's a really powerful strategy. Okay. I'm hoarse being average, radio being. Right, Abby, Abby 16:30That's a killer. Lindsay 16:33Next embraces and invites change. In fact, a lot of the times where we've had our lowest moments, we actually decided to struct ourselves. And I'll tell you that intentional career design is one of those things that I did where I was, like, I'm neglecting someone's soul in the process here, it's not just about jobs. It's about destiny, actually, and how do we create a reality for yourself, and when I decided to do that collapse timeframes, people get 10 times the results in a shorter amount of time, which is pretty crazy, since that program just rolled out this year. Next is I face fail spectacularly. And that means that we are tend to like not want to try until we know that we're going to go all out. And when we go all out, we're they're gonna go amazing, it's gonna crash and burn. So we don't do anything half. We don't do anything like that. Okay. And then the other is that they understand they're in the business of meetings. And that is the most powerful thing I want you to realize you are in a business, whether or not you believe it or not, I'm going to teach you how to market that business through this strategy. And what I mean by that is that you are selling a something of value and someone is going to give you an investment, we're not trading time for money for tasks, we're trading investment for value to get a return for that business that creates profitability. And when you see yourself as that, then you realize the most powerful impact that you can make. So that's the reprogramming here, Abby for you what was kind of a big one. Abby 17:49Um, so there was kind of like three that tied together, but like the never being satisfied and embracing, innovating change, like for me, those two really go hand in hand. Because if I'm not satisfied, I'm always looking for something else. And I know you mentioned this in your your mantra, like being average is like feels like death. Like, I just feel that if I you know, if I'm not contributing, if I'm not impactful, then like, what am I here for anyway? What is I guess? Like, if you want to get philosophical, like, what, what is my purpose if it results in nothing, right? So like, That, to me is just the worst, the worst things that could possibly come out of my life. Yeah, and I just realized, like, in the never being satisfied and embracing change, like those can be very good things. But it really depends on how you leverage that feeling. And I think going through this, I realized that, you know, in some ways, it's really good, because that means I'm open to try new things, it means that I'm constantly learning, I'm curious about life, and I will take on new challenges. And that gets me excited. But then on the other hand, if I let it overwhelm me, it turns into like, you know, just like being dissatisfied with your life in general. And feeling like I can't enjoy the the journey that I'm learning on because I never quite get where I want to go. And I sometimes don't even know what that means. But when I do achieve a goal, I can't appreciate it. Because I immediately like critiquing what I'm doing. saying like, Okay, how could I have done that better? Or, like, Where can I go next from here, and I don't even appreciate the moments that are successful. So it really kind of goes, it's like a double edged sword for me. Lindsay 19:24Yes, I feel that one too. So we tend to the closer our goal, the less impactful it actually gets. It's another high performer of not being able to celebrate the journey, and realizing that the journey is actually what we're supposed to be celebrating and the whole point of our experience, actually, so, but it's really hard when we get to that. So for you guys that are tuning in, I'm going to actually drop a link for those that want to jump into the boot camp because if you're ready to change your mindset now and get clarity in the next steps, I want you to go to dream job hack.com slash boot camp. Okay, so I'm going to talk to you about a little bit of the mindsets in order to win okay. Mohamed has a good question. I'm just going to post this up, we're not able to cover all of this today. But in two weeks, or should say, a week from a Friday, we're going to be actually going into this piece. And if you are struggling, again, how to transform your experience two to three pages, which it's two pages, by the way, then the thing is, nobody buys your resume, yet six seconds, you cannot describe your lifetime of experience in six seconds, and then two pages. So abandon that philosophy. I'm gonna teach you more about that. So dream job hack.com slash boot camp, you'll get these answers. Each one of you, it's five days to getting success, okay. And it's the quickest like version of how to get through to a place of momentum really quickly. That's why I built that program. Okay. And it's totally free. By the way, I've extended extended the timing for that bootcamp. Okay. So here's some of the mindset. First thing is I know nothing. This is a Socrates mindset, which says, If I come, I'll tell you like, one of the things that I work inside of right now like I have a coach for energy, healing, whatever it is, that's your, you know, your fruit of the week, whatever it is that you're excited about, go ahead and own it. Okay, own it authentically you. But when I come to that, I don't come and say, Oh, I learned about this, I learned about that. I'm a student. And so in here, I want you to recognize I have hired 10,000 people I've helped 15,000 people on average, someone working with me graduates with a $50,000 pay increase, not $50,000 job, pay increase, okay? Why do they get so high? Because we have people get hundreds of 1000s of dollars, that let me tell you, they didn't do anything spectacular, except work with me and a cool clothes container for that time. So here's the thing, stop throwing away unless you have hired 10,000 people have become a best selling author and have helped 15,000 people. And if you are I don't know why you're on this live stream. Go ahead. Okay, someone else? Yeah. Once you have that, then throw away whatever you know, and start with a clean slate. So we'll come to it with the idea of I don't have anything. Next thing is the secret of success is trust the process and people will be like, well, like what if you through all this? Okay, so go back to that. I know nothing. Trust the process, that has been proven like, it's kind of like, Well, you know, maybe if I'm trying to let's say I'm trying to exercise I think I'm gonna see how well just sitting on my chair is gonna work. Because that's like another idea. I can throw out like, trust the process that you're going to need to move your body if you're trying to increase your physical fitness. Okay? Okay, so I will be your truth teller. So Abby's gonna learn things. And she said she's willing to be up here and publicly critique. So she's going to get some of that. And I've seen some of the change she's already made and things and I'm like, Yes, I don't have to critique it, because she's learning and tradable relentless learner here. And then if it was going to work, what you had already been doing, it would have frickin worked by now. Okay, so stop getting in your own way and join boot camp. Okay, that's the first thing, and then make progress or make excuses. This one's hard. Because a lot of times when I see the victim mentality, and I fall victim to this as well, like life off, things are so unfair. And guess what life is unfair, sorry, that's just how it is. Okay, I can make a list of all the things I've gone through, and no offense, but it's probably bigger than yours. Okay. So and that's not to say that your pain isn't like when people. So I'll just say like, when my brother was murdered, I still ran my business, I still coach. In fact, when I was I, there was a point where I was clearing his house out after the crime scene had come in. And I helped someone negotiate a 60% raise while I was filling up the gas in the rental car, and to return it while he was at his house. I did not stop running my business and the people who are going through the pain of job searching, I recognize that pain is just as acute for them and where they're at. So what I'm trying to say here is you get to choose whether or not you move forward, or you get to choose whether or not you choose to be a victim and have excuses, okay, and I say like I literally have a victims unit coordinator, I am technically considered a victim, I choose to see myself as a frickin survivor, okay. Also, there's no magic pill. If there was, I would sell it for you for a million dollars. Okay, so there's not a magic pill, or I would just give it to you. And the other thing is that you have bad behaviors. And you have learned along the way that are holding you back, and things that you picked up from people who say they know what they're doing. And I'm gonna throw a few stones here. There are a lot of career coaches who've taken some sort of online certification, but I've actually never hired anybody. I sat in the unemployment office during the course of my layoff in the Great Recession. And listen to somebody who had never hired anybody teach me how to job search. And when I tried to do everything that she had said, which had already been doing and thought was the answer. It didn't work. So this program came from actually breaking down the process of how I went and fault found high caliber talent that we reverse engineered it. So I'm giving you the step by step plan. Okay. All right. So here's some things the things that are going to sabotage you on the way is one other coaches. Alright, so there are some people like Adam Karpiak, you should definitely listen to Adam. Yes, you should listen to Adam. Let's go look and see Adam is one of my first endorsements and he's the like, he said, I am one of the reasons that he started posting on LinkedIn. Okay, you should listen to Adam. There are people out there who are good ones, look who I'm following if you want to get the idea. There's a lot of people who aren't Okay, and they give Kumbaya messages that are like, wouldn't it be nice if the world was better? Okay, stop like having a pity party and do something. Okay. And what I share here is about how you do something. Okay. Next is your spouse. Your spouse has a big And this is shout out to all the spouses that are there and being really supportive. Your spouse has a vested interest in your success that cannot be objective. And so they cannot give you objective feedback. In fact, so my, when I was married, my husband went back to work after four years, and he was stay at home dad. And he's amazing partner and but I said, there's no way in Heck, I'm coaching you, you can work with someone on my team, because I am too invested in what the outcome is. And so I would choose something that would give me safety versus choosing what your actual purposes. So be careful of what your spouse's, your family is another one, your family tends to want to protect you versus and they're not job is not to support you, your job is to support you. So make sure you listen to that. That person is inside of you first, and then your self limiting beliefs, the things that you do to sabotage yourself. Okay. All right. Um, all right, I also swear a little bit, that's one of the things to know. Okay, so I'm here, I say that like, because I can't really swear on this platform. But if you ever join into my other stuff, you will see that I swear, because I'm considered the Antichrist of Human Resources. That's what I do at the highest, I want to completely destroy traditional human resources, it is about mitigating risk from our own people, which are our best asset and get we protect the company from them. And I feel like if we just did, and I'll talk about this through other stuff that I'm doing, if we created an environment where companies amplified talent, that would be a much better success versus trying to protect ourselves from companies, okay, or from our own people. That's ridiculous. And how do we make sure that whether Yeah, preach, right, whether or not for short term or long term, they should walk away, we still want them to do business with us, and we still want them to talk favorably about us, that should be the most powerful thing we do here. Okay. All right. I am going to go through, there's a lot of stuff inside of this. So we're gonna keep going. Okay, so what am I looking for you to do in your career? Well, I told you about the dream job zone, I'm going to reiterate that one, the dream job zone is the right job. And what I mean by the right job, let me just tell you, the right jobs is the moment you're in it, and it can change the next step, it can change because the company got a new leader of change, because your job got reassigned. Nothing is like static, when people are like, I want to find a job for my life. And I was like, good luck, you might want to build your own business, then Okay, and then likely, you're still not going to be able to stick in the same job, there is no job for life, you need to throw away that old mentality from the 1990s, it's not going to happen, okay, you are going to make a job change. And on average, if you want to increase your salary, like every two to three years is about the right move. I know. But this is the whole point no longer a victim in your, in your career, you're going to do this now. Okay, what I want you to do is the right job at the right company in the right company really comes down to both the supervisor and the company. So every job that you see posted out there is not the right job, okay, it's not the right company. That's part of your vetting process. So when we get into the employer, we're making them prove that they are worthy of our talent. That is the main mindset change, here, they are worthy of our talent, and that they would be lucky to have us repeat that for me in the chat for me, I am making sure that they are worthy of my talent, and they are lucky to have us okay. And what I want you to do inside of this is go to the place of last one was the right salary. So, in addition, you should be paid really well. You shouldn't be lucky to get a good job with a good company, you get paid really well. Likely you've generated hundreds, if not millions of dollars in impact for a business in your career. How is that their luck? You're lucky to have a job, they're lucky to have you this is the reprogramming we have to go through okay. All right. So the definition of what I'm trying to get you is this place of career power, which is anything that rewards you financially, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and allows you to build a life beyond your wildest dreams. Yes, it is possible and I choose the occupation because occupation is one of the core or five core areas of wellness. This is from Gallup. And what we're trying to do here, so there's a few ways you need to know that you should never dim your light for others insecurities going through this. So don't diminish yourself stand in your truest power, and it's going to piss off the people who feel unworthy. It's gonna piss off the people who are not your tribe. So you want to stand in your power and try stop fitting yourself into a box. There is no box, we create the damn box, okay? And it's not even a box. It's some weird shape. Okay. All right. So some of us have this mindset that we're really trying to address, which is whether or not I am worthy. worthiness is the big thing. Okay. So we come into this and we're like, Okay, I'm flawed. I'm not deserving, who do I think I am, okay. And I want you to go and change your my mantras to be I am worthy. I deserve abundance and I will change the world with my gifts. If you truly believe those things, then you will do the work to make that happen. Yeah, I'm making sure they are worthy of my talent. They're lucky deserve me. The companies are lucky to have us. Yes. Preach. Okay. Abby 29:41I hope that just people can believes in this because I haven't seen anybody else. So speak up for this. Lindsay 29:45Yes. Seriously, like this is the one main reprogramming is worthiness. Okay. I'm so ready for Lindsay. I'm so glad you're here. And yeah, I had somebody recently just on my podcast, they're like, let me talk so fast. I'm super sorry. Okay. All right. So here's some key beliefs to self worth. And then we're going to after this, I'm going to transfer mindset here, there's not a lot of work in mindset except ingraining it as far as your programming, so you're going to hear your own talk tracks, which they're going to be days where I'm like, and I'm going to say, like I am, I do not teach anything, I don't have to learn by myself. I have my own coaches, I buy my own, I drink my own Kool Aid, okay? So this will be days where I'm like, I really thought today, I don't feel very good, I am a loser, whatever it is that I want to tell myself and I have these pity parties for myself, and I recognize that I do. And then I have to get and say, I am worthy. I am deserving. Look at the impact I've made. And I'm going to teach you how to do this. Everything I do through here, by the way, is about reinforcing this mindset. So by the end, you become something we call unwithable. I say it like that, because I can't say it. You're okay. With the ball. Okay, that's our that's my favorite swear word, by the way. So what I want you to know is the key beliefs around self worth is that I don't need to please anybody else. When we start giving up what other people believe in us, and this is a practice, we have to continue, I just told you about how somebody kind of made me not to make me feel bad, I chose to feel bad about that. I also believe you choose how you feel, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt just means that I choose to how I believe and I spent a little bit time going through that and realizing, yeah, I don't really care what you do until most people, the people who are criticizing you, and this happens to me in the chat, if this is you, the most people will criticize you or never doing more than you because they're too busy doing other crap. So you're not gonna find out in cardiac, probably on this live stream talking about whatever I'm doing because he's got his own stuff to do. Okay, so people who criticize you, or always have some sort of issue with you, that have issue with you are always doing less than you. And that's offensive to people who don't feel worthy about themselves. But that's not your issue. That's theirs, let them go ahead and keep it okay. I choose how I feel about myself. My actions reflect my values, okay, my internal barometer of my value is based on my alignment to my goals, values, principles and actions, not what anybody else tells me, okay, and even when i f up and you will, because I said failure is necessary in the path to success. I know that I matter, I matter. And in turn, I will do what it takes to align myself to my goals, my values, my principles, and my actions, okay? Things are always going to shift in your job search, your career is never stagnant. It's like saying that you will never change. Okay? Nobody ever can commit to that. We invite change. Okay. One of the reprogramming things they need to have you believe is that every rulebook you've been given around, this has actually lied to you. Okay? job searching is not about searching for a job creating a single page or 17 page resume and applying online, it does not work that way. It does work point 4% of the time. Sorry, true story. Okay. So what we need to believe is that I instead of seeing limits, I see potential, I don't see problems, I see opportunities, I know that I am a catalyst to my own change. I'm not focused on the here and now and looking at my long term strategic focus. I don't care about what other people are doing for like, I was not resentful about other people's success. India's normal, India's human, but really what I'm trying to do is celebrate success for there for all I really believe in abundance, and that there is enough pie to go around. In fact, let me tell you, it's at the very top, they've got enough to give, okay, I'm not tied to any particular outcome, which means I don't care how like that one conversation or anybody here who doesn't like me today, I'm tied to whether or not my clients get results and whether or not I'm making a better impact on the world. I believe that I don't win, I win through my team and my clients. And that's the difference here. Okay, I don't have a problem for every single solution. I'm always looking for solutions that we can overcome together. I know that I creates results by taking action, not just by showing up. And instead of I know it all, I'm always learning like I'm learning from Abby. And that's probably a weird thing to say when you're supposed to be coaching somebody but we learn from every single person here, okay. Okay. All right. So I'm going to jump down here because there's a lot more that comes into this, but we always one of the biggest things inside of in mindset is your self care. Okay? So if you do not put yourself first and this means, yes, mothers or people who have spouses or partners, you put you first Okay, so oxygen mask first. If you ever been on an airplane, they tell you, if the oxygen mask drops, you put it on you first. Okay? If you cannot take care of you, then How the hell can you take care of anybody else? Okay, and it is not their job. Your job, they might support you, but the only person who can take care of you is you. Hey, key. So I'm Vicki. How about Sorry, I'm Vicki. Vicki, you can tell me about yourself here too. She's pretty excited. I was reading um, Elvie's of comments here. So tell me Abby for you. What have you tuned into for self care now in this process of really upgrading your mindset? Abby 34:54Oh my gosh, this is a big question. I think of the things that Um, we reviewed like, for me, I think it starts with my overall health. And I say that as a very general thing. So that means like physically, emotionally, mentally, you know, making sure that all those things are in the right place. There are many ways that you can shift your mindset. But for me, if I'm not taking care of myself, like you said, How can you take care of anyone else, and that doesn't mean just, you know, not just getting up and exercising, which is what I have been doing. But you know, I'm inconsistent. And I can tell when things shift, I will be, like, for example, when things are going well, it's because I woke up and I started my day, right. And I did my meditation in the morning, I did my exercise, I made myself breakfast, like, I started off on the right foot, and then from there, I can prioritize and organize my life. And on the days that are not, it's probably like, I hit my snooze button a bunch of times, didn't work out, feeling sorry for myself, like, you know, I just fall into this pattern, and it kind of spirals out. So for me, I'm really making, you know, a more conscious effort to do those things right away and just start my day, right. And then, you know, make sure that I'm thinking about it through the day and taking breaks from my screen a little bit throughout the day, just to go out and like be in the sunshine for a few minutes and brief. For me, that's really important. And, you know, taking the time to like, spend with the people who around me that energize me, and that, you know, I can share with and a lot of these guys are here for me as well. All of you guys who showed up today, like that's, I can't even tell you what that means. It's, it's like an overall, like you're frustrated together. But the fact that we're all here supporting each other is I think it's very powerful. And for me, it's very encouraging. So thank you for being here. So yeah, I'm trying to invest my time and the things that I know are going to fill my cup rather than just wallowing in self pity, you know. Lindsay 36:59And Raven says way to be authentic and vulnerable. Yes. And so authenticity and vulnerability are so so one, that's why I like Abby is here. Honestly, if she hadn't bothered to share her, her voice with the world, if she hadn't bothered to be transparent, she wouldn't have all these people who are cheering her on. So a lot of times we like to pretend that everything is okay. It is okay to say, I am not doing super great, but I'm choosing to move forward. Okay. And that's if you notice, like she said, I don't want to complain, or I don't wanna feel like I'm stuck. I know. I was like, I didn't get that at all. I just thought now how do we make the world better? Holly says she's cheering you on. So I love that. You too. Self Care is one of the big things. And I'm going to tell you that after my brother died, this was something I really struggled with, I really, really struggle with and love. People are like, wow, Lindsey, what has changed for you, like you're so much more healthy, more energized, more like able to be more consistent in everything that you do. Because running a business is just like, it is the hardest thing that to do personally, like it's the most expansive growth that I've ever seen. And I think any of my other fellow entrepreneurs will agree with that. How, what's what's changed, okay, I spent and you do not need to do this extreme, but I recommend at least one hour, three hours, three hours of self care in the morning. And here's why I have to look and I get up at five in the morning. So my little kids, when I get to the end of the day, I have something left to give them because you know what, they're the most important thing in my entire world, my job and my business and all my customers. I love you guys, you're very important to me some of my greatest accomplishments. But the thing that matters most to me is my family. There's the ones that really matter. And I mean, I tell lots of stories about my background. But I watched my dad go through an extended unemployment, he spent two years plus searching for a job and I watched his self worth completely wither away. And I'm really thankful I got to spend that time. So I'm here because my purpose is he actually went into the hospital after that job search. And he never got to walk out again. He was had inoperable brain tumor, and it's life into just a few months later. And so like I in my life been very, very hard after that, I became a homeless kid. And things were really, really challenging. So when I say like, I understand your pain, folks, I have been at the very bottom, I have been to the very bottom homeless without even a parent. So when I look at like my kids, I look and I say, they're the ones that matter most are all gonna be this little for a tiny minute. Okay, so we're gonna say an Amen. All right, so I want to say like, there's some things that we do and I love when we were like, I don't have time for this. And I was like, so and I'm gonna use an example full data because I don't watch TV. How to Game of Thrones in you can tell me that then what you're telling me is that you prioritize your entertainment over your self care. And Alright, so the first thing when we don't we, when I see people are like, I can't do this. And I'm like, if you were watching television, you have chosen something different. You have chosen that's a collective consciousness like that. Like oh, you know what is the world going on out there? Your TV is not going to uplevel your career okay? Your TV is not going to save your TV is not your family. So one stop making bs excuses second stop numbing out. And that could be through alcohol could be by hitting the snooze button it could be. And I'm not saying you don't need some time for restorative care, you should, you should and I still watch TV, there's some things I do. I'm not saying that you can't, but I limited and if you I always look at habit stacking which atomic habits is really a powerful thing. So like, I know, I can watch TV after do my dishes. Okay, like that's one of my things in order for me to get that reward. Okay. And the other thing is I do self destructive, self destructive behavior. So I'm gonna be really transparent here. When I feel really bad about my life, or whatever is going on, I will go get a Big Mac. I will go get a Big Mac at a soda two things. absolute garbage is good for which is not even that great for a little bit. And then I feel like shit and I've punished myself. So I want you to know, whatever you're doing, examine the behavior and what's the root cause of the story? You're telling yourself about it? And really, like be honest and stop hiding it. Stop making excuses. Okay. Okay. So let's see here. What? One of the things that really changed for me was when I started embracing habits and habits if you haven't picked up atomic habits, like you probably heard it a million times. It's so powerful. So habit stacking is another thing and also like consistency things like I drink a lot of water. I drink a lot of water. I've meditate I journal I set intentions. Yeah, exactly. So what I want you to think about is how do I change my mind if I can hack the first few hours of my day, when the rest of it in fact, you spend two hours just investing the beginning of your day, setting an intention, being mindful, exercising your mind exercising your body, choosing things that amplify your results versus I'm going to tune out or whatever it is that you're going to do that everyone tells you are so important. It's not so like, yeah, keetsa your legs are going I can tell you're living it. Yes. So I want you to think about what makes me feel good and do more of that. Okay, and not temporarily feel good, like a glass of wine may make me feel good. But I know that a bottle of wine doesn't okay. Choose what behaviors here that you're going to indulgent and choose for self care. And this is one thing like we've somehow especially women, women shout out to Luma shout out to the moms in particular, like Somehow, I get a shower. So I took self care, no shower is basic dignity. Okay, you get a shower. Okay, so anybody who's gonna smell it's not getting a shower regularly, please give that person some help here. Okay. Um, and the other thing here is, if you haven't ever read the book, power versus force, these are two book recommendations. Power versus force talks a lot about the different energies. We all have electromagnetic frequencies. Oh, my god, did you get it? changed my life. This book changed my life. And when I realized, like I was buying into things and grief is one of the hardest grief and shame, which are two of the things that happen in job search. When I was stopped doing that, and started resonating at a higher frequency, we tend to magnify what our successes so take a look at that book, if you haven't had a chance, cutting all the noise on radio made a big difference in my life. Yeah, the other thing I don't do is i'm a no news diet. I don't listen to the news. Because one, I literally have been the front page like of it bleeds, it leads, I have been that I have literally been, they've capitalized on my pain, they twisted my story, they've made it sound horrible when my brother was the one who was attacked and killed. And, um, it's like, I'm no longer buying into what mass media is, we have to choose what what we surround ourselves. So choose your, your, your frequency, choose your circle and choose yourself care. Those would be the big mindsets, okay. All right. So now I've got a little bit of time here. So Abby, I'm going to give you five minutes to ask your questions where you're at. And then I'm going to open up to the rest. And then we're going to talk about what we're going to do on Friday for the next thing. So the very first part here, by the way, is a lot It is low. It's really easy. When I say really easy, like I don't have people like I'm like, go ahead and write your resume. You will have that as an assignment here. But what I want you to do now is if you can change your mindset, everything else becomes exponentially easier because you realize that you're creating your own reality. Okay, go ahead, Abby. Abby 44:03Yeah, like real quick before I ask a question, though, like, I think, for me, going through this week, like you said, I feel like I've already learned so much, but I'm open to it. And I'm in a place where I finally am like, I like I have no other choice. This is where I'm going with choosing this. So it's a choice. It's a conscious choice. Like you said, you know, you can drink a whole bottle of wine or you can sit on the couch and eat like a pint of Ben and Jerry's or you can like, go do something that will actually be beneficial to you. So my, I guess word of encouragement to you guys is just pay attention to how you feel all the time. throughout the day. Start thinking about what you're doing and how that's making you feel and stop choosing the things that are making you feel bad about yourself. And yeah, we have moments, right, we're going to we're not perfect, we're human, we're gonna fall back sometimes, but um, but if you start to recognize it, it's easier to avoid right and you have to create new habits which let me just be honest, it's hard, hard work. breaking your old habits. But if you want to change if you want to feel different, you have to do something different than what you've been doing. Lindsay 45:07So if you want to feel different, you have to be doing something different. Oh my gosh, yes. Okay, I love that. And this is where I always were checking in on mindset. I'm like, this is just you have to choose to put you first. Yeah, that's the biggest thing, you have to choose to do the oxygen mask, I don't really care what you choose. There are some things like I talked about body, brain, belief and love. These are the three or four components of what I like for people to do in their daily routine, which is, what are the mantras I do? How do I take care of my mind and my body? And then how do I express love, because love for me, you can't really see it. Opposite here. value. And so if I do all things with love, so he asked me what my secret success is, if I do all things with love, then I know and turn the universe comes back to me. And people tend to know that my heart's in a really good place. Like I'm not really, I would, in very truthful transparency, I would love to unemploy myself in what I do. I would love to, because I don't want this to be a problem for anybody. That's actually what my long term goal is very weird, backwards business philosophy. I'm not in the business of making money. I'm in the business of making a difference. But I also want to take care of my family and I want you to be able to carry bores, and that's what we do. Okay, keep going, Abby. Sorry, I didn't mean to keep cutting you off. Abby 46:17No, that's okay. I kind of got on a soapbox for a second. But I just felt like maybe somebody needs Lindsay 46:21Oh, Fox, yes. If you can give like let's go I go hashtag Abby here. Amazing human, let's I keep telling her I was like, I'm just so thankful for her and being in my world now. Because she's just an amazing person. And she makes me better just by showing up. Abby 46:35I'm so happy you're here to. Um, if you guys feel I have to be up here being vulnerable. So if you feel like you want to share something and be vulnerable in the chat, it's a safe space here too. So, you know, tell us about you know, if you're struggling with something, or if you want to give something up, or if you want to change, feel free to share it. That is, I would love to hear about it. Lindsay 46:54I would love to hear so I'm gonna actually do that. Because you guys are gonna have a chance to ask questions. Go ahead and plug that in now like what are you struggling with? What like, what's the, and I might be telling you, I'm going to cover that in a later week. Or I might be telling you go join the boot camp for a dream job half because you're going to see a massive change in just five days. But let's go ahead and open for questions. And Abby, you go ahead and start with yours. Abby 47:15Oh, my gosh. Okay, I have a few. Let's see. Um, okay, so. Okay, I don't want to jump too far ahead. But I'll talk to you about something that happened to me this week. So I know that you mentioned kind of further along, and some of you guys might already be in this part on your career. Thanks for that. I'm lucky that you applying for jobs is not the way you get a job, right? Like it's not, it's not done that way. I don't know how it's done yet. But we're gonna find out. Lindsay 47:49Well, you guys, I promise. Abby 47:52But my question is, I know that a lot of us get approached, especially on LinkedIn with and I don't know if it's just like recruiters, or like people selling a service, or whatever it is, but we got lots of messages out there that are like, you know, I found you and your look like a perfect match for XYZ thing. And like one of two things usually comes out of it. And I've noticed this, like, for me, it's either I'll write back, and they'll say, Oh, I don't actually have a job for what you do. So it's, I mean, just spam. And then the other one is, sometimes you'll write back and then they don't respond, or it takes him like a week. And they're like, oh, sorry, I got busy. Like, what I guess is your advice on how to or whether or not to respond and how to respond to that, like, what's best practice. Lindsay 48:40I'm gonna give you a couple things here. So one, I'm just like, everything are really poor recruiters out there. And one of the things I do is I teach organizations how to actually go out and target people. If you've ever applied to this, every job with the same resume, you probably have also gotten these math, I'm not saying and one grace the other. But if you ever apply the same job, and then you get a response that's canned and sounds like what we call like a mass market message. Those it's the same thing. So I want you to we're going to change this completely in the way so I want you to think like I'm going to tell you I get reached out about collection agent rules. And so what I when I see that I don't know, what's wrong with me, or what's wrong with them. I think that's a plan. Okay, and so a lot of times when I'm going through this, the things that are not even close are I wouldn't do and people who treat you like you are one of many, like I look at my and I have a large following, but I don't say like oh, like McQueen, everything I have, you know, six figures of followers across all my platforms. I don't think I have you know, followers. I think I have 100,000 people and souls that are following me. So if they don't treat you like you're an individual, they're likely not have the same mindset that you have. So you kind of have to take away that idea that somebody is that they are going to be worthy of you or something's wrong with you. So if we take away that thing, I just want you to think like, these are opportunities that are coming into me. And they may or may not come to fruition, which is why worthiness is so important and why mindset becomes a big one. So that's the first thing is backup strategy. Okay. Second is people, one of the things that's challenging is we tend to, like, we put all our eggs in a couple of baskets. And so we always want to have like, one of the traits of a high caliber candidacy is having multiple options. So we never have all our eggs like, like this one thing, if it doesn't work out, suddenly, something like, all my plans have gone to crap. And now I'm a horrible human, Abby 50:34I have learned the hard way. Lindsay 50:38So this, sadly, like I had one client, she's like, I was just I knew this was the job for me. And everything like I knew it was and then that job, so she got to the second level or second, or second place, and then get the job. And she's I was like, so what happened with all this is what we're gonna do in a few weeks here. What happened with this, they're like, Oh, I stopped doing that, because this seemed like it was a thing. So we never stop, we never stop, I'm going to show you how to focus on what you do. By the way, do what I teach here is not about doing everything I say, for eight hours a day, two hours a day, Monday through Friday, in the course of nine weeks, I can get you those results, okay, we're talking about the freedom principle we're gonna do less is more. So in that every person that you're reaching out to connect with is going to be or that connects with you is going to be worthy of your time. And I say that because there are a lot of recruiters always have options. Yeah, Keith says, I probably see 20 message or respond to that I never hear from him again. Okay, so we are going to talk about this inside. So one, first off, go sign up for boot camp, because we're gonna change how like your optimization on your profile is one of the challenges that you're having. Second, you have to realize that there's people who are doing crap out there, and they're doing like they're sending out garbage and they're getting garbage back. I have been guilty of this, I'll tell you that recruiters get inundated. So we have to become the candidate of choice, which is what I'm going to show you through this process. So it means optimizing your profile, optimizing our story, and having really value out of connection conversations, I'm gonna teach you how to do this. In fact, you might have started some of this work already Abby, the value proposition is going to be the key here, it's going to be the secret sauce. It's also the hardest thing that you will ever do. And I had a Chief Branding Officer at a very major company who almost cried, and it was a guy while doing this with me. And if he couldn't get it together, I don't expect anybody to and I don't cry anymore. So I don't think actually, it's just I tapped on, like, I need you to show me that you're worthy of this. And people don't know how to deliver that. And so that's what I'm teaching you about the business of meeting. So once you to know one takeaway that there that anybody has any decision on yourself worth except how you choose, every event is neutral, it's either working for you. So if they don't respond to you then say that opportunity wasn't for me, okay? Or and I also want you to think that connections, especially the ones who are really heartfelt recruiters will want to make a connection, they may take a little bit of time, but when we want to get results, and we are showing up on our calendar versus theirs, we are overwhelmed as recruiters and so I also am a recruiter advocate. I believe the program that we've worked, like the system that HR is operating in, is not sustainable. And so recruiters, the ones who we typically like we believe in the human, we've somehow forgot about the human inside of businesses, but we believe in the human. That's why we got into it. But we are overwhelmed. Let me just ask you, Abby, how many do you think how many applicants do you think I worked with on a monthly basis? When I was working? Abby 53:17I got 1000s, I'm sure. Lindsay 53:18Yeah. So far. It's been three and 6000. And I was hiring four people a month. Abby 53:23I don't think that. Yeah, I don't I I, I mean, you've read what I wrote, like, I know that the recruiters aren't the problem. Hiring managers are not the problem, HR. People are not the problem, though, right? It's the system that they have to upgrade with the program. Lindsay 53:40Exactly, but we don't we don't have HR is not seen as a revenue generating department. So it's understaffed, and people don't place a lot of value in it, because they just don't see it. And so we've always undermined the value that has, so that makes it really hard. And so we have a really overworked system. So we need to get Oh, Vicki got a new job last week. That's amazing. I didn't really she's not sometimes not with me. So this is where I get really excited. In three years, I have people who which you should be doing, they should be about this time changing jobs. Again, we're seeing massive change. So what is don't put a lot of weight in this and know that intentional hyper targeting will be the secret of what we're going to do, we're going to find the right people which combines both influence and authority to identify our and reveal the hidden job market and I'm going to talk about this and some people and some people I really respect will say that's not true. I'm gonna say, I have I think I posted a job a long time ago with my business but I have never ever hired somebody from a job advertisement in my business and I have hired a lot of people like 50 so I'm just know that the for the right companies like I have created jobs for people we can do that. That's what I'm actually teaching you to do is how to have somebody see your value so highly, that they will create an opportunity for you. That's the end goal. So when I say like I can teach you how to land a six figure job without ever having to apply. I'm going to show you how to do that. Okay, so hang on, don't worry about the house so much right now. Exactly how you get access to the frontline, you're going to share with everybody your story so hard to sometimes get caught in that. So the big part is just No, there's nothing wrong with you the system is broken, you already know this, but for everybody else listening, and that don't put a lot of the weight in that my worthiness is depend on whether or not somebody responds to this. Abby 55:17Yeah, 100% I know, we're kind of near the end here. But like just a couple things that came to mind. Like, what Lindsay said, it's it. It's interesting to me that the job punch for me starts with my own mindset and what I think of myself, internally, it's not where I expected to start, but certainly work. Um, so just a couple things like, you know, mentioning, taking advice from other people, be careful of that, because one thing that I realized, and I'm gonna post on resonate with any of you guys, but um, I take advice from people that I respect, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I want their life. And if I'm taking advice from people whose life is not the life that I want, then guess what I'm going to end up with their life, and it's not the life that I want. Lindsay 56:03that is the most powerful statement there. So I'm going to tell you, I had a conversation and I love my m

We have a really big show this week! First off there is the news about Locast shutting down. We have what we think could be a good candidate to replace the Harmony Remote. We look at suggested seating distances based on screen size. You won't believe this one. Then we look at an article that tries to tell you how to evangelize Hi-res audio to your friends. Plus we read your emails and look at the news. SofabatonX1-Most Versatile Universal ALL-IN-ONE Smart Remote Sofabaton is launching X1, which is targeted at multi-device scenario-based Activity control, while adding a wireless Hub, which we believe can better meet the needs of power users. This looks like an actual Harmony Remote replacement with a hub. It's a Kickstarter project and has a cost of about $100. We will of course do a review when they become available. TV sizes: How big a screen do I really need? Your TV is probably too small. Use these rules of thumb to determine what size TV to buy. Full Article Here … SONY'S RECOMMENDED SEATING DISTANCE TV size Viewing distance range (approx.) 43-inch 35 inches (2.95 feet) 49-inch 39 inches (3.28 feet) 55-inch 39 inches (3.28 feet) 65-inch 47 inches (3.94 feet) 75-inch 55 inches (4.59 feet) 85-inch 63 inches (5.25 feet) Bottom line: You could go much, much bigger with your next TV The ultimate decision is one of personal preference. My goal here was to point out a rough idea of what's possible or recommended. For me, I would always err on the side of "too big." An old boss of mine used to say that no one regretted buying a TV they thought might be "too big." My opinion is that a 50-inch TV is too small for most rooms. That's not to say I think everyone should get a 102-inch screen, but the reality is a 50-inch flat panel is really not that much larger than the 36-inch CRTs of the old days. Since 65- and even 75-inch TVs are now far more affordable, they're worth considering if you've got the space. If you want to go really big, consider a projector instead if you've got control over the ambient light in your room. Another View: Breaking the Sound Barrier – How To Talk To Your Friends About High Quality Audio To stay abreast of everything Home Theater, Smart Home, and Audio, we subscribe to a lot of News Feeds, Blogs, and Newsletters and we also receive emails from our listeners alerting us to articles. This one came across in one of our news feeds from TWICE (Full Article Here) (This Week in Consumer Electronics) and thought it was interesting to discuss because we are completely on the opposite side of this discussion. The premise of the article is that with all the music sites going Hi-res, most listeners don't think they can hear the difference and somehow need you to tell them that they can. From the first paragraph of the article: For 25 years now, mainstream listeners have become accustomed to lossy, low-bitrate music. For audio enthusiasts that's been a longstanding gripe, but it appears to be finally over. With lossless and hi-res streaming about to go mainstream, bit-reduced audio will now go the way of the 8-track. That leaves an entire generation of listeners that don't know anything better and probably thinks they can't hear a difference. Audiophiles — this is a moment for true public service. Spread the word: high-quality audio is not only back, it's better than ever. Yes AAC and mp3 are lossy file formats, but low bit rate? The days of 96Kbps mp3 files on Napster are long gone. Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify and others have been serving up 256Kbps AAC and mp3 files for years! This may be lower bit rate than Hi-res but we wouldn't call it low bit rate. Most people can't hear or even have equipment capable of reproducing the sound so that you can hear the difference. To be fair, most people would hear an improvement with 256Kbps files if they listened on good equipment instead of cheap earbuds or their talking tube devices. We argue you would be doing a better service if you convinced people to get higher fidelity playback equipment than trying to tell friends that their music would sound better on the same crappy equipment because it's Hi-res. From the article: Begin your public service by assuring your friends and all who'll listen that they really can hear the difference. The rational among them will immediately understand that more digital information means more sound. We call to the stand Rick Beato and his video Audiophile or Audio-Fooled? How Good Are Your Ears? In this video Rick explores the differences between MP3s, WAV, FLAC (lossless), AAC and whether you can tell the difference? He says it comes down to how you listen to music and whether it sounds pleasing or not. It's not about mp3, AAC, or Hi-res. If you listen to music in your car or on a run with earbuds, you have a different experience than someone who listens in a dedicated room with proper acoustics. From the article: Now that master-quality audio content is going mainstream, so too will the equipment to play it back. This will be particularly true of personal listening, because headphones/earbuds have become a dominant product category. We agree here, but not because of Hi-res, but because we are used to listening on comprised equipment. That's not to say it's bad, there is a place for lower quality gear. But if you really like high quality audio, invest in some hi quality speakers, amplifiers and headphones. The author finishes with: There's never been a better time to be an audiophile. Digital audio has made tremendous strides and will continue to evolve even further. Some lossless services will even deliver spatial 3-D audio; imagine the benefits for gamers and cinephiles. Good quality sound finally matters again. To those who already know the pleasures of deep listening and flawless reproduction, company's coming. If we help people find out about it, just watch how fast the audio world will grow. We agree! But it has nothing to do with Hi-res files because we are not living in the year 2005 any longer. Good quality sound always mattered and we have been listening to it for years. It's just that many people do not know what really listening to music is all about. Introduce your friends to the concept of truly enjoying music. Take your friends on this journey. Pour a glass of your favorite beverage and enjoy the music and where it takes you. Just don't be a snob about it.

After reaching rock-bottom, today's guest knew something had to change. Today we'll hear the story of how change happened for him and how he's helping others find healthy life change. It's everywhere we look. Sexualized images that once would have been hidden from view and now are readily available online, whether we want to see them or not. More than that they're on our televisions, on billboards, in advertising in our shopping malls, and so many other places that we've become desensitized to how much something that was once private, is being pushed into the public sphere. Damon Covert is someone who allowed society's new take on sex and sexuality to shape who he was. It almost destroyed him. He's my guest on Bleeding Daylight today, and together, we'll explore a very different kind of addiction. Damon, welcome to Bleeding Daylight. Damon Covert Thank you, Rodney, it's a pleasure to be here. Rodney Olsen You describe yourself as a grateful recovering addict and that immediately makes us think of drink or drugs but your addiction was very different. Tell me what it was that gripped you. Damon Covert I was introduced to pornography when I was only about eight or nine years old. Now this is BC This is before computers before cell phones, at least before personal computers. And I grew up or rather got older in the 80s. And so you know, if you wanted pornography, you had to go out and find it. I wasn't even actively looking. I was just with some friends. And again, it was after a Cub Scout meeting of all things, which was, which was kind of crazy. Because, you know, in scouting, they teach about, you know, morality, and being gentlemanly, and so forth. And there was nothing gentlemanly about what I was introduced to in that attic that night. You know, I didn't even fully understand what I was looking at. as a as a child of only eight or nine, these magazines were actually fairly explicit. They were not, you know, this wasn't just nudity there were there was a bit more graphic nature to it. And I didn't have an immediate craving for more of that, that would that would come later in my adolescence. And my exposure to pornography actually was was kind of it wasn't terribly overwhelming until I got into my my adolescence, my teen years, when, you know, friends were exploring this sort of thing. And it developed slowly at first. But the introduction was very early. At an impressionable age, Rodney Olsen We hear more and more especially in this digital age, that the time that young people are introduced to pornography, or at least first see pornography is getting younger and younger, that it seems that it was pretty much the case back then and maybe not as widespread. But for you as an eight or nine year old, you're starting to see things that you really don't understand. So what was it that brought you back to it? Or was it something that well, that's what I've seen, and, and I'll move away from it. And you were drawn back in your adolescence, Damon Covert I think it was just like any addiction. I think this is why it's so easy for people to get hooked on anything. It could be shopping, gambling, it could be video games, I think it was just a way for me to medicate my emotional pain. You know, I really didn't understand what I was looking at. But it did, it did create a certain reaction to my brain. And and actually, we've come to understand, since that the science behind pornography is virtually identical. In terms of what it does in your brain, to drug addiction. I've seen brain scans of people who have just taken heroin. And compare those with a brain scan of someone who's viewing pornography, the same areas, the same pleasure centers of your brain are lit up when you're when those two activities are going on. So it is it is a biochemical thing. But you know, again, it's it's just interesting that you don't have to actually physically take a drug to get that same high in your brain. I was not necessarily the most popular kid in school, I wanted to be well liked. I wanted to be thought of as as a fun person to be around. I typically didn't feel like I fit in very well. And we're also hearing that a lot these days with younger people, you know, where they don't feel like they fit in. So they start to assume certain things about their, their identity and so forth. And it was just a way to medicate my emotional pain. Rodney Olsen So that emotional pain, what was going on for you at the time? Was it just those struggles that we all face through adolescence and wanting to be liked by people as we go through those high school years? Or was there more to it at that stage? Damon Covert I think there was much more to it. And I do think that a lot of addiction is rooted in early trauma. I think it had to do mostly with my family of origin. I had a loving family. I grew up in a nominally Christian home and we really didn't go to church a lot, maybe on Easter. You know, my mom sent my brother and myself to vacation Bible school to get us out of the house for a couple weeks during the summer. And you know, that really was it. I didn't have a great foundation spiritually. But my home life was a little tense. I learned to walk on eggshells because I never really could fully predict what side of the bed my mom might wake up on. And so I learned to kind of toe the line, I knew my parents loved me. But I couldn't always feel like I deserve that love. And that sort of shaped my my view of God to growing up, I wanted to have a little more control over my life didn't feel like I could have that openly. So I think it was channeled into addictive behavior. And when I think we see this with with other addictions, as well, but it certainly was, was just a way of exercising a degree of control, or at least the feeling that I was in some kind of control over some aspect of my life. And so I think it was more to do with the the early trauma of dealing with parental anger and so forth. You know, I was never physically abused, I have no recollection of being sexually abused, although many people that are addicted to pornography and struggle with sexual addiction are, in fact, emotionally, physically and or sexually abused. To, interestingly enough, the emotional abuse is, is a higher incidence, it's over 90% of people that struggle with sexual addiction, are dealing with some sort of emotional abuse, versus 70, or 80%, of physical or sexual abuse, Rodney Olsen You're talking there about having some kind of control in your life, being able to control something because everything else seemed out of control. I'm interested in the whole idea of addiction in this sexual addiction that you found yourself in, along with addiction to drugs or alcohol, that they seem to start as being a way of someone having some kind of control. But how quickly did that start to control you? How quickly did the tables turn for you? Damon Covert Yeah, that's a great question, Rodney. And I think it probably happened a lot earlier than I realized. And I think that's how it knew that is in the addict mind, is that we tend to think that it's all under control. It's not a problem, until it's a problem, it's not a problem until somebody finds out or you get caught. So I think it very quickly, especially me, in my adolescence, it very quickly escalated, daily need to partake of this, this addiction. Again, it wasn't like you could just pick up your phone these days, I actually feel sorry, for a lot of the you know, a lot of people that struggle with this, because it is so easy to access this material these days, you don't even need to go by anything, you will probably already have the phone, and you probably already have an internet connection. And so it's just a matter of grabbing that piece of technology and beaming this stuff into your brain. But even if I wasn't able to seek out and physically find pornography to look at, again, this is the early 80s, there were no personal computers hooked up to an internet, my friend had a Commodore 64. And that was, you know, the hot computer at that time. There was also the the physical gratification that goes along with that was something that quickly took over my life, we're told it's kind of a normal thing for for adolescents to do. I prefer the word common, I think we use the word normal far too often. I think that, you know, it quickly spiraled for me, where I was, you know, I was acting out in some way, shape or form almost every day, and unable to go even even a couple of days, without using my drug of choice in some way, shape or form. Rodney Olsen You're mentioning that it's very common. Society would like to tell us that this means that it's normal. And of course, it becomes more and more normalized as we go on. And I think probably around the 80s, and especially into the 90s. And after that it became even more normal, where even in our television shows if there wasn't something pornographic in there. There was mention of it, there was a lot of mentioning just some fairly standard comedies on TV where they're constantly talking about use of pornography as if it's a very normal thing. Do you think that this has been one of those things that has supposedly normalized it in our society and stopped people from getting help when they need it? Damon Covert Absolutely. It's sort of a chicken versus the egg conundrum. Which came first? Is it art imitating life? Or is it life imitating art? Or are we now just sort of stuck in this cycle of life imitating art imitating life imitating art? And and I think that it definitely has been normalized. And we've seen that across the board. And unfortunately, it's it's a slow progression as well, we're seeing more and more deviation from what used to be normal, normal no longer means much anymore, because we have overuse that word. There's a commonality in terms of our internal struggles and the way we deal with things as human beings. In the United States. We have an estimate of about 30 million Americans who are struggling with some form of sexual addiction, you know, it's 68% of our population, I honestly do the numbers a lot higher, because, you know, it's a very touchy subject, nobody wants to really admit that they have the sort of problem. But I do think that absolutely the the media have created this the sort of standard that it's perfectly normal to, to view pornography and act out on a on a regular basis, you know, alone or with others. And that's just how it is. Somehow celibacy is fatal. You know, I've never met anyone who died of celibacy. And you won't, because, you know, when I was in college, I was taught in psychology class that, you know, sex was a basic human need, you know, you had food, water, shelter, and sex. And that's just not true. It's just not true. We have a sexual element to our personalities, God created us as sexual beings. But there is a stewardship that should go along with that I never really took seriously. I mean, I did initially because I wanted to do the right thing. I wanted to be pure. I was anything but but you know, I, since I technically had not lost my virginity, yet, I still thought of myself as a pure person. And honestly, I was weird even back then for that, yes, I didn't grow up in the, in the, the new Victorian 1950s in America, where you didn't say the word pregnant on television, and people slept in separate beds on TV. You know, I grew up watching, I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke and all the reruns from, you know, the 50s, and so forth, where you didn't see, you know, husband and wife, even sleeping in the same bed now, you know, somebody goes out to a bar, and they meet somebody on a TV show, and the next scene, they're in bed together. So it is it is definitely a problem where this is normalized for our kids. This is normalized for young adults who are trying to discover, you know, what it means to be alive here in these modern times. Rodney Olsen And you're talking about the tricks that we play in our own minds. They're about thinking, Well, I haven't actually slept with anyone. So therefore, I'm still pure. I'm still sexually abstaining. And yet we see that there are these tricks that we play. And there, of course, was the famous one some years back where one of your presidents said I did not have sexual relations with that woman, because he decided what was going to be under that heading and what wasn't? Damon Covert Yeah, I had a feeling you were headed there Rodney. And I was I was going right there, too. I do. I do have to blame our one of our former presidents, but it's not just him. You know, it's it's been like that we've been trying to redefine things for so long. You know, if we don't like the way a word is used, we'll just redefine what it means. And we're seeing that more and more and more. And, and it's just to suit a certain narrative. So that we can feel like, you know, everything's okay. It's a control thing. I think we have people that are there. Basically, we're addicted to self, we want to feel better than we feel. If we don't feel accepted, if we don't feel loved. We're going to redefine what love means. And actually, I mean, that's the the the other point I'd like to make is that too often, I mean, we are trying to equate love and sex. Sex is sex and love is love. There's a certain movement where you know, you'll see this, the words Love is love, and that that's true. But sex is sex. You know, sex is not equal Love, love is greater than sex. Going back to the books, we read the shows, we watch the music, you know, the words love and sex are used interchangeably. And I think it's just because we have been for so long, we've been redefining what words mean, we're, we're redefining things where they now have no meaning. And we're seeing that go. In the United States where we're seeing that go to an extreme. We're just assigning the gender really isn't even a thing. And I know that's a very touchy topic. But, you know, we've we've gone and taken some steps here in the United States, and it still hasn't played out completely, but we are D gendering our legislation. And I do think too, and a lot of ways these gender issues, these are addictive thought patterns. You know, this is a way of exercising control a, here's how I want to be seen, here's how I want to be, you know, addressed. Here's how I want to physically dress, here's what I want my body to look like, and we just make these changes, whether it's, you know, some sort of implants to make us look more attractive. Or if it's, if it's just more radical modification of bodies. There's there's there's a whole rabbit trail of things that can come out of this, this idea that you know, our identity our sexual identity is paramount in our lives. Rodney Olsen I'm interested that you bring up the the whole point of the love is love campaign that we've seen, which is designed to say well, anything goes because They use love as as an attraction rather than defining it as that self giving love that that we might understand it to be. So when I say love is love, I have to agree. But first you've got to determine what the terms mean that you're actually talking about. Damon Covert The Greeks actually have as you probably know, there are at least six or seven different words for love. It's it's sort of like the American Eskimo or illusion, people's, you know, words for snow, they have all of these different types of snow. And they have a special word for each one. And, you know, in in the Greek language, you know, people are maybe familiar with the term agape love, which is sort of that all encompassing, accepting altruistic love, but then you know, you have philia, which is a love of friendship. And again, there, there's an interesting, we're not going to touch on a really touchy topic here. But when we talk about pedophilia, for example, and when you tell somebody you have a sexual addiction, I think their mind in a lot of cases wants to go to the worst possible place. They want to assume that you're some sort of pedophile that you know, you have a problem with sexual attraction to children. I praise God that my situation didn't get to that point. But it is a progression. So it is something to be very, very careful about because, again, the mind wants something different all the time. And the media will feed you whatever filth you want, they will provide that for you ad nauseum. I don't like the word pedophilia, only because I don't think that really fits the definition. a pedophile is a Laker of children. I think that we should if we're going to create a word for that that type of aberrant behavior or attitude, it should be a little more accurate. This is we're talking about erotic love, or physical love. You know, the Greek word arrows. You know, again, it's a way of softening that word. Well, I just like kids, you know, when when Penn State University in my home state of Pennsylvania, a number of years ago, there was the Jerry Sandusky scandal. And Jerry Sandusky, for example. He just said, Well, you know, I just I like kids. I love kids. But yeah, not in the right way. Jerry, I'm sorry, you know that there's, there's no point at which a child should be subjected to the sexual advances of an adult. And I think most people would agree with that. But we are gradually heading toward as you said, anything goes? The logic could be well, that's just my sexual expression. You don't have the right to tell me that that's not okay. I think right now, the majority of people would say, absolutely not, this is totally off limits, and never should be okay. But I think we are going to see a Fabian progression, start to blur those lines. And we do see that, where I'm where I'm broadcasting from right now, in the state of Maryland, we have a law that says if it is cultural, that a minor can be married to a much older adult with parental consent. So if it is cultural, you know, out of specific religious belief. And we have a 14 year old girl whose parents are okay with this 45 year old man being her husband, that's legal. And again, as you said, it's we're headed toward a situation where anything goes where there's this this concept of pansexuality, you know, anybody anything anytime, as so long as I can feel better about me. And that's really what addiction is all about. Rodney Olsen We were talking about the fact that you became hooked in your adolescence. But where did it go from there? Where did it become such a problem for you? Damon Covert You know, when you're young, and you're single, and you're unattached, and you think, well, this is no big deal. You know, first of all, sounds like all my friends are doing the same sorts of things. It's not a problem. But it becomes a problem when you're especially when you're impacting another person directly. Now, I think there's there's a concept in a lot of people's minds that pornography is a victimless crime. It's not. Because you know, we have we can demonstrate the direct connection between human trafficking and pornography, and the the so called sex trades and pornography. Where it became a problem for me was relationally. One of the one of the things about a sexual addict is typically when they will want to find someone who's willing to to be with them and kind of satisfy their physical needs or desires. A lot of times, immediately after that there's a rejection because of the shame But the addict feels, and they will often push that person away. And this would this was my problem, too, I was keeping people at arm's length, I was desperate and hungry for intimacy. And the physical intimacy did not provide what I wanted. I was not I do not feel necessarily accepted, simply because I was with someone physically. And so I kept trying to go back to that. And a lot of times that, you know, there is a cycle where you'll go to someone you know, is going to say yes to whatever it is you want to do. But immediately after, there's almost always a rejection, well, look at the time I've got to go. And, you know, we see that played out in the media, too, that there is there is some truth to it. I mean, that's the the really attractive thing about any lie is a grain of truth, that rings, you know, with, with other people in resonates with them and say, Oh, yeah, I've experienced that, where it really hit home for me, I wish I could say that this was not part of my story. Out of my addiction, and, and out of a lack of caution. One of the young ladies that I got involved with got pregnant. You know, we were panicked, we were scared, and we were young, it was a terrible time for either one of us to try to start a family. And because we didn't know what else to do, we had an abortion. I am every bit as responsible as the young lady involved, I still deal with the feelings about that. I mean, I think about that almost every day of my life. And it's easily by far the worst thing I ever did. And again, here, here's society, saying this really isn't a big deal. You know, we don't even call it a baby anymore. We're not we're not, you know, terminating a baby, it's a pregnancy, we're just terminating the pregnancy, the condition of being pregnant. That was my first real rock bottom moment, where I thought, Oh, my goodness, you know, this disease that I have, has driven me to the point where I have taken someone's life. In terms of the other ways it affected me. I carried it into my marriage, I you know, I eventually met a wonderful woman got married. And, you know, we were pretty happy at first or so I thought I still had my my secret sin, you know, ever since I bought a computer and was hooked up to the internet, I could access that. Anytime I had a little privacy. And that has, you know, I was going on for a long time. And, again, it wasn't a problem until it was a problem that kept fueling my my desire for that intimacy that I was searching for, which again, was never gonna be satisfied by pornography, or by physically acting out, you know, so this was going on, the entire time I was I was married, I would be okay, for a couple days, maybe, or I would try to quit. And maybe I'd make it a couple of weeks sort of white knuckling my way through recovery. And I wasn't involved in a recovery program at the time. So I was just doing it on my own, which by the way, never works. But eventually, because of the other stresses and strains on my marriage, I had emotional affairs, a couple of these in a short period of time. And then my wife found out she asked the right questions, and I was honest with her, and things hit the fan. And I really felt like, you know, my marriage was over, my family was over. And, you know, this was this was the next rock bottom for me. But by the grace of God, my wife took me back. And we've worked things out. And here we are, you know, 15 plus years on the far side of this stuff. Our marriage is not perfect, but it's good. And we work on it, you know, we actually have true intimacy, I can talk to my wife about some of my issues, and, and I have accountability and so forth. Rodney Olsen I'm interested, first of all about that term of an emotional affair, because this comes back to the whole idea that we can justify certain things Hey, look, I didn't go very far with it. It was just a sort of a connection for those that that perhaps don't understand what we're talking about. What would you classify as an emotional affair? Damon Covert I would say it's any relationship that you wouldn't want your spouse or girlfriend or boyfriend to know about. We have these relationships, whether it's someone at work, or someone we know socially, or an online relationship. So I think anything that you would want to keep a secret, when truth is our secrets keep us I was as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, as they say, I just always worried that one of those rocking chairs was going to come down on my tail. It's any kind of relationship that you would not want your significant other to know about. I termed these emotional affairs because they did stop short of sex. But there was a physical element. You know, there was a physical affection element to these relationships, but just because they didn't actually involve intercourse. That doesn't make it right. We have to put up boundaries in our lives to be safe. You know, because Because it's it's very easy to get into a conversation and feeling an emotional connection with someone. And again, if you are an addict mindset, you can find a little touchstone with just about anybody. But it's just very dangerous. And it doesn't end well Trust me. Rodney Olsen So you've come to your own rock bottom, what was it that turned things around for you? How did you start to claw your way back to where you should have been? Damon Covert I can't take a lot of credit for that. I think that in a lot of times, a lot of situations like this, we have to be broken, very, very few people will wake up and just change because, okay, you know, I realized I'm in a bad way. For me, and let me just speak from my experience, I had to have those Wake Up Calls, you know, that was I had to suffer the consequences. And again, this is something we like, we want to have our, you know, our cake and eat it too. We don't want to have the consequences of our actions. And so I had to feel that sting. And I had to realize that, you know, the pain of continuing in my current way of thinking, My current mode of operation is greater than the pain of dealing with my stuff. And so after the disclosure of these emotional affairs, and the fallout from all of that, there was a long road, the spiritual connection really was, was what started that for me, I began to realize that I could not help myself, I needed a power greater than myself. And until that point, the God of my understanding was me. Again, I grew up in a in a nominally Christian home, I had heard the name of Jesus, I knew, you know that God loved me. But I didn't really comprehend that. I didn't really get that until I realized, I have nowhere else to go, and God will still take me back. I was the Prodigal Son, you know, I had been given all these great things, and I squandered them. And yet, my father not only took me back, but ran out to meet me. That was the point for me where it turned around, I realized that I was isolated, and shows isolation, as a way of protecting myself and my lifestyle. But I got plugged in to a church. And in my case, I'm a musician. So plugging into our worship team was was a logical step. And I served in any capacity, I told the worship leader, I said, I'll do whatever you whatever you need, you know, I ran the soundboard. I wasn't on platform for a while. I just did whatever they needed. And that helped me and I met some real friends, I met people that I can actually talk to. And I remember very clearly a number of years later, you know, finally opening up to one of my buddies on the worship team and telling him I had a long way to go in terms of my sexual purity. I remember that night with crystal clarity. And that was the beginning for me. And then our church started a Celebrate Recovery ministry. I started attending that because I knew they needed a worship leader for their their program. And I thought I'd go help those people, only to find out I was those people. And I needed to be there for me. For the last several years I've been I've been involved in some capacity with Celebrate Recovery. And then I heard about another fellowship that was geared towards sexual addiction. I started attending that as another layer of accountability. And, you know, I found a sponsor and people that understood my specific issues, although I have found and what I love about CR is that it is basically everything, you know, I mean, you can you have shopaholics there, you have gambling addicts, you have people who struggle with drugs and alcohol, you have people who struggle with codependency and sexual issues, it's across the board, we can get hooked on anything, to try to medicate that emotional pain Rodney Olsen Before we talk about the this ministry that you've begun. And I want to find out about that, and how we can hook people into that. But I want to go back to some of the things that you were saying before you were talking about pornography and those that it affects. And it's not just those who are consuming pornography, but those who are involved in it in the first place. And I heard a statistic somewhere that it's around 70 to 80% of the people that we see in those images have been forced there that have been trafficked there in some way. And, and I'd suggest that their number would probably be even higher. Damon Covert I'm sure it is Rodney, and you cannot prove consentuality even if there's some affidavit on the website that says everybody's 18 is here of their own free will. There's just no way of knowing that for sure. I don't want to be part of that problem. I got better for myself, and you have to want to get better for yourself. You have to be, I guess more miserable. You know, again, realizing that that point of your own pain is greater to continue in what you're doing then to make a change and start owning up to your stuff but You know, socially and culturally, there there is a greater mandate to not be part of the problem. I was definitely part of the problem. And I think you're right, I think that the the numbers are probably much higher. I actually had the privilege and blessing of hearing a woman speak her name is harmony Grillo, she was pimped out as a dancer by one of her former boyfriends. But she got out of that got away from this guy and went to school. Now she's got a master's degree, I think she might have two master's degrees. And she actually has her own ministry in her own organization that helps women get out of the sex trades. Over 80% of people that are working in the adult industry, women in particular, say they would rather not be some of the like, they don't have any financial choice. This is just, you know, the only only marketable skill they think they have. They also get into these situations where it's it's a promise of some some degree of fame and notoriety. I actually sat on a plane with a young lady. I was visiting my brother in Atlanta. God has a sense of humor, he puts the sex addict next to the aspiring playboy model. This young lady was probably 20 college age. I just felt like God was saying, you know, you should talk to this young lady, but it was not in a creepy way. It was just Hey, let's there's something going on here. Let's find out what what her story is. And so I started talking to her and I found out she was actually flying to Atlanta to do a swimsuit, shoot. This is how it starts, it starts out as Okay, well, we're going to bring you in, we're going to take some some pictures of you and your bathing suit next to a car and the setting, I think for some sort of advertisement. But then hey, what if we did this? And what if we did that? And hey, if we gave you a little bit more money, or let's let's have a couple drinks, or have some some, you know, have some drugs and try something else. And people get duped into this fraud, coercion and force? And yes, absolutely. I think the numbers are shockingly and terribly high. And it needs to stop. But we have to stop the demand. And the demand is within each one of us on some level. Even if you're just buying a dimestore novel, book, something that has graphic descriptions of you know, these these sexual conquests with these guys in a loincloth and tearing some lady's dress on the cover. This is porn. This is pornography. I had a pastor friend, retired pastor challenged me said, Well, how do you define pornography? I said, Well, you know, I had to think about it, because the old definition was you knew it when you saw it. Unfortunately, we don't know it when we see it anymore. So I would say that we should redefine pornography. Anything that triggers you to sexual lust is pornographic. Whether it's a book, you're reading a magazine, you're looking at a video, you're watching the music, you're listening to the way someone is talking to you or the way you're talking to somebody else. All of these things can be pornographic, it does not have to be an image. It does not have to be a video, we have to stop that demand in our hearts. We have to stop looking to fill ourselves up by taking from somebody else Rodney Olsen And stop redefining things. Stop calling something like 'ethical porn', when there's no way that it can be. We've got to stop redefining it to make ourselves feel comfortable, I guess. Damon Covert Absolutely. Yeah. And actually, there's a there's a fantastic but disturbing TED Talk. Lady talks about the so called ethical porn and some of these issues. And that the titles, the most popular titles, and the things that people search for are absolutely shocking. It's you know, whether or not that's actually what's being depicted, or whether it's just this is a scene we're setting for you. It is very disturbing. But again, it's disturbing, because this is somehow in some way it is relating back to an unresolved trauma, or unresolved issues in your past that caused you to seek out certain things. It is common, but it's not normal. There are other ways to process this, instead of just giving in and saying, I'm going to look at this, that or the other thing, I'm going to seek this stuff out and as you pointed out, it's you don't have to seek it out. It will find you and your phone and your TV, your TV's watching you. I don't think people realize this. But you know, George Orwell was right. He just didn't get the timeline quite right. You know, we're well past 1984. But we have black screens hanging on our walls listening to us watching us. Your TV has a camera, your phone has a camera. My computer has a camera, my iPad has a camera. There are microphones and there are things going on where I will have a conversation with my wife about, I don't know, paper towels or something. Sure enough, the next time I'm on social media, I get an ad for paper towels. So if we are, again, sort of letting these sort of things come out of our mouths, certain words, certain phrases, things like that. Then our phone is feeding us what we want. AI is behind all of that stuff, you can have an argument with your spouse, or your your boyfriend or your girlfriend, and it, you know, he may not even be specific to sex. But now, big brother knows your relationships a little rocky, Hey, remember this old girlfriend, you know, remember this thing that maybe you haven't seen this before? You know, take a look at this. And unfortunately, it's meant to divide. It's meant to undermine the the safety and security of our relationships and our families. Rodney Olsen It takes a lot of courage to come out to the world and say, this is where I was, these are the issues that I faced. But you've gone beyond that. And you've started up an opportunity for others who are caught in these addictions, to actually make a change in their own lives. Tell me about that. Damon Covert This actually was born out of my own recovery. And again, I'll give Celebrate Recovery, a little plug here, because that was that those were the rooms that I started to get well in and continue to work with other men and women toward getting better. And actually, the ministry is called principle eight. And it is based on the eighth principle of Celebrate Recovery, which mimics the 12 step of you know, and any other a program, whether it's, you know, Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous or Overeaters Anonymous or what have you. And that is to share the message, I consider myself a hope dealer. For me, Jesus is the hope, but I want to make the introduction, I used to be a certain way, and now I'm not. And the difference for me was my higher power, the highest power that I can can think of, and that's, that's Jesus Christ. So I want to share that message. But a lot of people are skeptical of the church, they've been hurt by the church, they've been hurt by somebody in the church, you know, they think of religion versus relationship with God. And, you know, maybe they grew up in a certain type of Christian church or, or they just have certain baggage attached with the way someone treated them. So they won't necessarily come to a church, they won't necessarily come to a recovery meeting that's held in the church. I know when I was in my active addiction, I thought, Man, I'm going to walk through the the threshold of that church and I'm going to burst into flames, God is going to smite me right there, I thought I had to get cleaned up. So I was good enough to present to God. And that's not the case. God says, Come to me, I will get you cleaned up. I want to be able to take this message out to college campuses, where we have hookup and date rape culture, and wild promiscuity. I want to take this into jails where you know, not everybody is there for a sexual offense. But there There certainly is a great deal of difficulty behind bars, and certainly, people medicating their emotional pain, sexually speaking, I think we need to start talking about this in church, you know, some pastors are brave enough to actually bring these things up. But it's usually one Sunday, a month, or maybe an occasional allusion to pornography or something like that. I'm actually really proud of my home church pastor, because he does bring this up on a regular basis. And we're very recovery friendly. Because I think recovery is God's plan. It's the same sort of thing. Look, you can't do this, I can turn it over, let's work on this together and get better. But I want to be able to take this message out to coffee houses, campgrounds, basically any place where I can gently ambush somebody with a message. And I do that through music, I write original recovery based and faith based songs. And somewhere in that language, maybe something's going to resonate with somebody, and they may not even fully understand why. But it's an introduction to a conversation. And a little explanation, then after the fact, might might help them, you know, want to seek out certain resources. And we're developing our own curriculum. But we also recognize that there's a lot of great work that's already been done. And we can refer people out to different organizations and different resources to help them on their journey. Rodney Olsen I'm sure there are some people who would feel that you're just another one of those Christians trying to tell others how to live. But in the meantime, I'm sure that there are so many people that you come into contact with who are saying, this is something that I need, I need this to break free from what is holding me back, as you said before, it started out as me wanting control. And now this thing controls me. I want out. So there must be a number of people that you've met with that are just so thankful that you were there for them. Damon Covert Well, it is a blessing to hear that somehow your story is helping somebody else. Because I have had people come up and say, You told my story or at least a part of and we say in the rooms of recovery, that if you you know come here long enough and you listen to enough testimonies, eventually you're going to hear your story, or at least something very much like it. You know, there is that again. It may Be not normal, but there is a commonality that exists. And, you know, just hearing that and knowing that you are not the only person who is struggling with this right now, you know, when we think about pornography, even in terms of whether it's a gender specific problem, it's not. It is a male and female problem. Sometimes it manifests in different ways, with men and women, but it is a it is a human problem. And acknowledging our commonality, our common struggles are common, you know, we suffer no temptation, except that which is common demand, it says right in the Scripture, and that is the truth that we do have these issues. We don't know how to solve them. But yes, talking to people and saying, Man, I really appreciate that you actually came out. And I mean, I started out by sharing a very, very detailed testimony in front of 150 strangers at a men's conference at my church, and I was terrified. But I was met with acceptance and gratitude. And it was a beautiful thing, to be able to share these deep, dark secrets and not be kept by them anymore. It was like, like nothing else, you know, it's just being accepted for who I was. And that's what that's what I was shown the love of God that way. You know what I want to show the love of God other people that way, regardless of what you done, no matter how far down that that spectrum, you slid. And again, it's not about comparison, everybody's rock bottom is going to be a little different. But boy, I would have loved a wake up call earlier, the alarm was going off, I just, I just kept hitting snooze, I wasn't listening, Rodney Olsen I know that you've come to that point where you can share what you've been through. But I'm sure that there are people listening right now who say, Look, I'm not at that point, I need to reach out. But this needs to remain something private, until I'm ready to share it is there hope for people like that, Damon Covert I wouldn't just encourage them to find one safe person that they can talk to. And that can be difficult. You know, it might not be your pastor, it might not be. It's probably not your spouse or your partner right now. Because again, they they are on the receiving end of this. And we have to be very sensitive that we have heard other people that there is there is absolutely hope. There are lots of great programs, many of them are geared toward anonymity, it is just a firm understanding and requirement when you walk through the door. The people you see the things that you hear, they stay in that room. And so you know, there, there are safe places. But even your most trusted friend might not be the best person because it might be your so called drinking buddy that you always, you know, hung around with and gotten into trouble with. So you need to find someone who looks like they have what you've got and then spend some time with that person, you know, find out if they're they're the real deal. Do they really walk the walk? Or are they just another, you know, person dressing up and shining up for Sunday. Rodney Olsen If people want to find out a little bit more about principle eight ministries or to contact you where's the best place to find you? Damon Covert Start with our website. It's www.principal8ministries.org. There are some resources there to help you get started on your recovery journey. Really, the vision for the ministry is to be able to go wherever God calls and whatever way God provides. So it is a vision driven, mobile, global multimedia ministry. And we exist to engage, encourage, equip, and empower people who are struggling with or affected by sexual addiction. That's the 15 second elevator speech for you right there. So yeah, check out www.principal8ministries.org And you can find out more about what we do and how we do it. Zengineering: A Philosophy of Science, Technology, Art & Engineering
Howdy, Zengineers! Did you know everything you do all day runs on software? Yup. It’s true. Everything. Well … I mean, not EVERYTHING, but pretty much everything. Your car. Your electricity. Your phone. Your computer. Your TV. Even our dishwashers and blenders, doorbells and lights, all run on software. There’s no way around it. Software is powerful and enables the technologies we’ve all become accustomed to. But what’s so unique about it? Well, one of the primary drivers behind software’s viral spread is that once you digitize something, you can share it with everyone at almost no additional cost. The same cannot be said about the tires on my car, or the wood used to make my front door. Since sharing software is virtually free, free-software has come to rule the world. And, that’s Open Source. Software anyone can access, anyone can build upon, and anyone can get the benefit of… often, at no cost. The engineers and designers behind the software that runs the world realized decades ago that innovation is enabled when these software solutions are shared openly and freely. Business can grow faster. Money can be made more efficiently. Lives can be made better… all because we share with one another, and collaborate on the world’s big problems through Open Source Software. What a joy, you might say. So smart. So wonderful. I can’t believe it. Well … believe it. Your phone may have software on it that you paid for, but your phone simply would not work and, quite frankly, would not even exist, if it weren’t for people AND BUSINESSES freely sharing critical softwares systems with each other. This revolution is starting to come to other industries, as well, as the marginal cost of other technologies continues to be driven down. What an innovative and functional time to be alive. Who uses those words to express the thrill of life? Nerds, baby. Er… I mean, Zengineers!! We hope you enjoy this episode as much as you enjoy all the Open Source Software enabled technologies that you’re using right now. Series: Staycation, Speaker: Pastor Jim Groves, Scripture: Psalms 103:1-22, Mark 12:28-31, Deuteronomy 6:4-5, 2 Samuel 6, Luke 21:1-3, John 7:38-39, Video: https://www.facebook.com/avalonchurch/videos/396231907999935/, Sermon page: https://www.avalonchurch.org/sermons/staycation-default-settings-part-3/, Sermon Notes: 2020-07-05_staycation-part-3_sermon-notes.pdf, Discussion Questions: 2020-07-05_staycation-part-3_discussion-questions.pdf, Notes: Psalms 103:1-22 NIV 1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: 8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children— 18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. 19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. 21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. 22 Praise the Lord, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the Lord, my soul. Default Settings – we know what these are (printers, for example) In 2005 the brilliant author and professor David Foster Wallace offered the commencement address at Kenyon College in Ohio in which he spoke about default settings: “Here is just one example of the total wrongness of something I tend to be automatically sure of: everything in my own immediate experience supports my deep belief that I am the absolute center of the universe; the realist, most vivid and important person in existence. We rarely think about this sort of natural, basic self-centeredness because it's so socially repulsive. But it's pretty much the same for all of us. "It is our default setting, hard-wired into our boards at birth. Think about it: there is no experience you have had that you are not the absolute center of. The world as you experience it is there in front of YOU or behind YOU, to the left or right of YOU, on YOUR TV or YOUR monitor. And so on. Other people's thoughts and feelings have to be communicated to you somehow, but your own are so immediate, urgent, real.” He continued: “[And so] petty, frustrating [stuff] like traffic jams and crowded aisles and long checkout lines in the grocery store give me time to think, and if I don't make a conscious decision about how to think and what to pay attention to, I'm gonna be [upset] and miserable every time I have to shop. "Because my natural default setting is the certainty that situations like this are really all about me. About MY hungriness and MY fatigue and MY desire to just get home, and it's going to seem for all the world like everybody else is just in my way.” Wallace followed that with a clear statement to the seniors gathered that it’s a matter of choice to do the hard work of somehow altering or getting free of the natural, hard-wired default setting which is to be deeply and literally self-centered and to see and interpret everything through this lens of self. Wallace, who was raised by parents who were atheists, spoke of one more default setting: “In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the best reason for choosing a God to worship is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things—if they are where you tap real meaning in life—then you will never have enough. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly, and when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally plant you. Worship power—you will feel weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to keep the fear at bay. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart—you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on. The insidious thing about these forms of worship is that they are unconscious. They are default settings.” Our message series, Staycation, is subtitled, “Chasing Joy in the Everyday.” Three years after his commencement address, at the age of 46, David Foster Wallace committed suicide He found no joy in the default settings King David pens Psalm 103 with a full awareness of default settings. Look at how he begins: Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Ps 103:1-2 NIV) -- Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits (Psalm 103:1-2 ESV) “Bless the Lord” or “Praise the Lord” is not the default setting at birth Praise should be but is not very often natural David writes an exhortation to himself – and shares with us as an example The Hebrew word for bless is barak and has a distinct meaning of expressing joyful gratitude as an enrichment of God That is, the praise (however expressed) will make more people aware of the person and works of the Lord, and so God’s reputation will be enriched This act does not revolve around me at all – in fact, it only includes me as an undeserving recipient of the blessing of God It is fully adoration “All that is within me” (all my inmost being) Mark 12:28-31 (NIV):One of the teachers of the law asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ [Deuteronomy 6:4-5] What does it look like to bless and praise with all that is within me? I don’t know -- David doesn’t tell us Probably because each of us is uniquely created by God and he relates to us and us to him as uniquely as a father does each of his children What God receives as blessing and praise from you may not be his expectation for me, at all I would guess that our immediate response to this question would include enthusiastic singing, perhaps even a little dancing or shouting Doris caught up in Hillsong concert Mike Smith understands that King David would understand that 2 Samuel 6 records that when the ark of God was being brought into Jerusalem, King David was leaping and dancing before the Lord But later he sits down and writes Psalm 103 because getting caught up in praise – which is good, by the way – is different than choosing and determining to praise I would suggest that certain widow “blessed and praised the Lord” Luke 21:1-3 (NIV): As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. It took all of her heart, mind, soul and strength to make that offering – and it blessed God Let me additionally suggest that “all that is within me” changes over time I loved Debbie with all that was within me when I was 20 and we got married How that love looks is radically different (and significantly deeper and more intimate) 48 years later So, while I cannot give you specifics, I can assure you that blessing and praising the Lord involves aligning all of who I am in intentional, God-centered adoration With an audience of one “And forget not all his benefits” This is more than a mental activity – like “it slipped my mind” It has to do with actions – intentionally make the effort not to forget This is not just “don’t do something” – it is definitely “do something!” David goes on to list so many things that God had done But more to reveal God’s character than make a list of deeds This is about who God is, not so much what he has done God forgives – and heals – and redeems – and crowns with love and compassion He satisfies and strengthens – and intercedes on behalf of the oppressed He is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love Our Father does not stay angry or treat us as our sinful behavior deserves Instead, he has compassion on his children and treats us tenderly David is so correct But David can only recite what he has seen in the past He had no idea of how much bigger and better it would be for those of us on the other side of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah He could have never imagined the magnitude of love that God would display by sending his son, Jesus, into the world to pay the final and full payment for sin And neither could he have imagined the gift of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and the role he would play in blessing and praising John 7:38-39 (NIV): Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. David implores himself and all of us to do the hard work of changing our default settings so blessings and praise flow freely from within Like John Molloy’s jelly-filled donut Let me close by reminding you of a Kay Warren quote that Pastor Don shared last Sunday: Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things. “Bless the Lord, O my soul; all that is within me bless his holy name!” My challenge to you this week – work on changing your default settings. Memorize and meditate on Psalm 103:1-2, them make the choice to praise the Lord. In a world of social distancing you may not feel comfortable coming forward to ask for prayer or talk more about Jesus But we really do want to hear from you and speak with you Please take advantage of our text number 407-559-8210 Text the word “prayer” to make a prayer request Text the word “life” if you would like to ask questions about following Jesus or to let us know you have already made that decision but would like some guidance on the journey

Blockchains and Algorithms Blockchain is the latest tech craze and has attracted a lot of attention. Before blockchain, computers operated in a client/server relationship, where one central authority (the server) is contacted by a client (your laptop, phone, etc.) and is requested to send back information. An example of this is when you use Netflix. Your TV connects to a Netflix server, which has preloaded movies and shows for you to choose from. Once you select your show, it then streams the video content to you. That’s fine, until Netflix removes the show you want to watch, and you let out a big sigh. Well, it could be that their contract for sharing that show expired, or they needed the space to upload a new show. Either way, it is too bad for you. What if there was infinite space, lots of bandwidth, anyone could upload a movie or TV show, and nobody was in charge, so your favorite show could never get removed? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, that’s essentially what blockchain is: A network of ordinary computers, sharing resources, all working together with no master. The only control is the code shared by all these computers, which make the blockchain. Every blockchain (network of computers) is designed to do something different. There are video distribution service blockchains being created right now, but there are many different uses for this technology, and ways to go about creating this network. No one way is perfect right now, and there is a huge race to evolve into the best overall solution. To have a blockchain, computers called miners must create new blocks which are then accepted or rejected by the network. Blocks are rejected if they are invalid, malicious, or incomplete. There have to be certain rules and guidelines set in place in order for the network to function properly. It wouldn’t make sense if a Netflix blockchain suddenly allowed someone to upload a book, or even a podcast, or upload a movie claiming themselves as the director or producer. Here’s a brief overview of the Top 10 most used algorithms, and a sample of which popular blockchains use them: Proof of Work - Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Monero Bitcoin’s founder created Proof of Work, where miners configure their computers to solve very intense puzzles, competing to create the next block. When they solve that puzzle (once every 10 minutes), they are given a reward (coins). Bitcoin has become so valuable, entire countries are setting up huge factories to create blocks and claim rewards. Places that have free power have a tremendous advantage, as the machines required to mine these blocks suck up unbelievable amounts of power. A decommissioned power plant in Australia was recently purchased solely for the purpose of Bitcoin mining. Video cards from NVIDIA and AMD have also been in exceptional demand. They are selling above MSRP, often sold out the same day a retailer has them in stock. Proof of Stake - NEO, DASH, and NavCoin Instead of mining, people who hold the coins belonging to the network have the option of being “minters”. A designated third party creates the blocks, then the minters run software on their computers that act as validators. It’s much less energy intensive and requires no special hardware, just coins. The more coins you have “staked” in the blockchain, the higher the chance you have at being selected (at random) to validate a block. Delegated Proof of Stake - EOS, Bitshares, and Lisk There is a major difference in this system compared to the previous two listed. Instead of everybody having a chance at validating a block, only a small number of machines on the network are selected, by a vote. This way, it is much easier for a handful of computers to talk to one another to compare blocks and validation, in a much more efficient way. If one validator starts to fail, they are voted out of circulation and replaced by another computer on the network. Instead of miners competing with each other, in DPoS they all work together to solve the block puzzle, creating blocks much, much faster. Proof of Authority - POA Network, Ethereum’s Kovan Testnet This consensus algorithm is pretty much the same as the client/server relationship. There is one authority in charge of everything, and the clients can just read the information (if allowed). This is best used in private corporate chains. Additional conditions to become an authority can be specified, including identity management and verification, in contrast to the previously mentioned algorithms, where the only identity on the network is often a wallet address or IP address/port. Proof of Activity - Decred This is a combination of both PoW and PoS. Currently only Decred uses it. Pros and Cons remain to be seen. Proof of Burn - Binance Coin, Counterparty, Slimcoin Instead of being rewarded for solving puzzles, you are supposed to send coins to an irretrievable address, to be lost forever. The concept is by decreasing the supply of coins, the value of the remaining ones increase. More often than not, the practice of “burning” coins is something done by the developers rather than the community. Blockchain ICOs often burn any unsold tokens remaining, as they cannot be allocated to any other area in an honest way. Binance burns some of its profits every quarter, to ensure its coin gains value. Proof of Elapsed Time - Hyperledger Sawtooth Every participant in the network is assigned a random time in each block. Whoever’s time runs out first, gets to create the next block. Clients on this network must be identified, and their code must have passed verification trust, to avoid simply exploiting the time on your network node to trigger sooner. Pros and cons are yet to be determined. Directed Acyclic Graph - IOTA, Hashgraph, and Nano Participants in this network that want to send a transaction, are first required to do a small proof of work, in which they verify two previous transactions that occurred before. In theory, this tangle can accelerate to near-instant speeds. Unlike traditional servers, the more users that are logged on, it gets faster instead of slower. Each of the networks has their own unique take on how to organize transactions, so read into each project more if you desire. Byzantine Fault Tolerance - Ripple, Stellar, and Dispatch Pre-selected validators are in charge of the network. No miners or community contributors are required. With that said, Stellar allows anyone to become a validator, while Ripple itself decides who validates blocks on their network. These are centralized services using blockchain technology. Proof of Space/Capacity - Burst Although, only one coin currently uses this, it is a fantastic algorithm. It allows people to mine using spare hard drive space, instead of CPU/GPU cycles. Your hard drive space is filled up with small amounts of random files that act like lottery tickets. The network elects a winner every defined number of seconds (or minutes) and gives them a coin reward. It takes tiny fractions of energy (5 watts) to power a hard drive, compared to 100+ watts of a single GPU or 1200+ watts of an ASIC (specialized mining hardware developed just for Bitcoin and other major coins). There are still many more algorithms out there, including: Proof of Importance Proof of Reputation Proof of Weight Proof of Evolution Tendermint CASPER Distributed Byzantine Fault Tolerance SPECTRE If you’re thinking of creating a blockchain of your own, continue your research! It will be time well spent. It seems like a sick joke, at first. You just spent hundreds, possibly a thousand bucks on that brand-new 4K TV in your living room, and your home theater-nerd friends are already telling you that you need to spend a more on a soundbar and subwoofer? [caption id="attachment_1382" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Debt for Happiness[/caption] We never learn me included, I was financially obese and in debt. the original post Are you financially fat or Obese? 2009 was my financial wake-up call. I was laid off from my job because our economy went to shit in a hand basket. Like many Americans, there was a shift in consciousness concerning ideology concerning the American dream and living. Once you begin to lose "things" "Thought" of as important and find how important they are not. I like many other fellow citizens were living way beyond our income level. Funny thing, I kept asking myself before the 2008 crash, how long could real estate prices continue to rise, and banks keep making refinance loans greater than 100 of collateral. Still, my logic did not deter me from spending five hundred to a thousand dollars more than I was making at my day job. Here are the bills I was paying frequently costing me $5k a month. 1st mortgage Second mortgage Discover card (several thousand dollar balance) Very high balance revolving open credit line. Visa #1 Master card #1 Visa #2 Car payment number 1 Car payment number 2 Cable bill Separate internet bill Daughter's Harp rental(yes full size) Mbna credit card Car insurance for three cars (two drivers in household) Misc bills I can't remember. All told I was drowning in debt. Then I was laid off. All hope was not lost as I had a small business that generated the money outside of my day job to keep us afloat. In addition, my wife worked and had her own bills, WTF was I/we thinking. The layoff and the temporary reduction of income cause me to pause and rethink my situation. Since 2008 I have managed to turn my life and credit rating g around. I forgot to mention, during my financial reprogramming, just when I was seeing serious financial daylight, my wife and I separated. I was not deterred. Mission Statement I will not have more debt than I can pay off at any given moment of my choosing. There is one exception I had to make, which is housing. For several years I was an apartment dweller until I remarried. The apartment allowed me to control my living expenses for about 5 years. The good news is, because I worked on living for need versus want, I was able to repair my credit, savings, and peace of mind. When I did purchase a new home i received the best interest rate. My interest rate made me gasp, as it was the lowest I've ever experienced. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJfHD7DPl9U] What I learned. Even though everyone and common wisdom may inform us to save your money, the financial temptation is EVERYWHERE! Don't be good rich! rich is looking like you have everything under control materially but owning nothing of value. Being Rich is looking like you have everything under control materially but owning nothing of value. Don't be surprised, doctor, lawyers people who you think have the resources are suffering too. It's all about outside perceptions. Just because someone earns $250,000 annually does not provide financial security, if someone is financially overextended. Money is the new crack! Companies make it easy to take your money in order for us to look wealthy but be functionality poor. Banks make us functional addicts by issuing credit, and the lessons learned by many in 2008 are starting g to be forgotten. Not me! Live for need and make "wants" rewards for good behavior. I know now, a second reprogramming was required. After paying off my debts and living below my means, what's next. The answer, more of the same. Don't spend it just because you have it to spend. Here is how it's done. Your phone works find you don't need a new one. Your TV still has sound and picture you don't need a 70 inch OLED because it's new. Yep, your car is old but it cheaper to fix it than to buy a new one. Make your much it's healthier than buying processed fast food. Use your library, you would be amazed at how much it saves you. Chose to purchase experiences versus things. Get a bank account not easily accessible and direct deposit minimal 10% of your income. Learn something new to generate an income. (Try to make(profit) $100) a month and save that money. We are programmed in industrialized nations to be financially obese. This is psychological warfare to keep you low. Every day you are told you are not good enough if you don't have the latest item being sold. It's not true. Think of it this way. Do you have a safe home? Do you have enough food? Are you healthy? Are you loved? Do you have clothes to wear? If you can answer yes to these questions, then 99.9 of your needs are set, the rest is extra. The other demon we deal with is boredom. I have had a tendency to spend unnecessarily when I get bored. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I am bored often. This is where I learned to use my mind and begin creating to stave off boredom. So it's time to cut the financial fat and create a financial reserve for the lean times.

How to care for your HDTV Most of us want to preserve the life of our home theater investments. Some, who want to upgrade, may not. For those, do the exact opposite of what we talk about. For the rest of us who want to protect our hard-earned investment, to make sure our televisions to last as long as possible, there are a few simple things to remember to make sure you get the most hours you can from it. Most of these apply to any piece of electronics you have in your theater: receivers, DVRs, Blu-ray players, projectors, you name it. Keep it cool Nothing kills a TV prematurely like heat. The TV, especially if you have a plasma, will heat up quite easily on its own. All this heat, if it can't dissipate, can destroy the internal components of your television. If you don't allow for adequate air flow or ventilation around the television, you may be killing your set off before its prime. Your television manufacturer will typically list ventilation requirements in your manual. If you live in a very hot climate, you should be concerned about the life of your TV. Not that it needs its own cooling system or dedicated air conditioning unit, but if it is difficult to get heat to leave the room, it will be that much more difficult to get heat to leave the TV. Proper ventilation is key, but you may also want to consider installing some small fans, either in your TV cabinet or near the television, to make sure the air is always moving. Some after-market thermal controlled fans can be used to turn on only when a specific heat threshold is met. It isn't just heat, humidity can also cause severe damage to a television set. Liquid is the enemy of electrical components and humidity is no different. Do your best to keep the area clean and dry. If you don't keep it clean, the moisture in the air could mix with the dust in the TV set and form some very damaging gunk on your sensitive circuit boards. More on keeping them clean later. But make sure you keep them dry. While very cold temperatures can impact the performance of the TV, very rarely will they have a negative impact on the life of the TV, unless the extreme cold is also coupled with moisture of some kind. However, rapid swings in temperature, where the set goes from very cold to very hot and then back again, in a short amount of time, can wreak havoc as well. The electronics are tested for extreme temperatures, but assuming you'll be in Arizona if its hot or Alaska if it's cold. Try to keep the environment consistent. Keep it clean Dust and dirt are another plague on the extended life of an HDTV. As we mentioned before, dust, especially when mixed with moisture from humidity or anything else, can cause severe damage to the TV. The dust-moisture mixture can cause electrical circuits to connect to the wrong chips, shorting them or overloading them. It's like the classic problem of “bugs” in mainframe days. Anything on the circuit board that isn't supposed to be there can cause problems. Proper ventilation is very helpful to reduce dust formation, but even with good airflow, dust still builds up on and around your television set. Routine cleaning is critical. Don't allow the dust to build up long enough that it can cause an issue. Use a soft rag to remove the dust from the exterior of the television cabinet. If there are vents in the cabinet, blowing them out with a can of compressed air can be quite helpful. You'll want to be careful with this, though. You don't want to blow all the dust deeper into the TV and cause your own build-up mess deep inside the bowels of the television. Keep the usage smooth Your television likes to do what you ask of it. It likes to perform for you. But it doesn't like to do tricks. The less you make your TV work, the longer it will last. For example, the climate issue of quick changes in temperature is not good for the TV. Keep the air temperature consistent as much as possible. Also, constantly turning the TV on and off can cause problems. It shouldn't. And all manufacturers test this (or at least should be testing it), but the power up/self test/initialize sequence can be intensive. Performing that rapidly and repeatedly could be problematic. You should also look to keep the power going into the TV as smooth and consistent as possible. This more than likely means the use of a power center with power conditioning. Something that will sit between your TV and the wall outlet to make sure that a sudden jolt in power, or a momentary dip in power, won't make it through to the TV. If you're using a UPS to maintain power to the TV even if you lose power in your home, make sure the UPS provides smooth (sine wave) power, not choppy (stepped wave) power. For many years to come In the end some simple rules to follow and a couple quick maintenance steps can make sure you get the maximum life out of any HDTV, or any home theater component for that matter. Whether you want to preserve your TV or projector, receiver or amplifier, the rules are pretty much the same. If you're in the market for an upgrade and need an excuse, ignore everything we said. In fact, do the exact opposite. Your TV will come to a screeching halt in no time. It is important to remember that despite your best efforts, home electronics aren't perfect. You may put all the love and attention into your television that you humanly can, and it can still fail. There may be a component failure that is completely outside your control. Chips fail, boards die, pixels stick. It just happens. Doing the simple things we talked about won't guarantee your TV will last for a long time, but it will improve your odds significantly.

Your TV ad isn’t going to drive patient volumes, inbound vs. outbound marketing, are awards and rankings gaining import with consumers?
It seems like every new home theater device wants a network or an Internet connection these days. Your TV wants to be connected, your Blu-ray player, even some receivers want to be online. Not to mention dedicated media players and gaming devices. If you don't have a hard wired connection to your theater gear, you can usually try WiFi, but even good connections can be unreliable at times. That's where a good Powerline adapter can make all the difference.

You open your mailbox and grab a handful of paper. How long does it take you to sort that mail? Do you open each envelope and consider its message, or do some of them get tossed into the trashcan unopened? More than 71 billion dollars were spent on direct mail marketing last year according to the US Postal Service and each of these dollars was spent in the hope that: 1. your attention would be gained by the advertiser's message and 2. you would spend time – at least a moment – considering it. Less than one fourth the amount spent on direct mail – 17.3 billion dollars to be exact – was spent on radio advertising in 2010 according to the Radio Advertising Bureau and each of these dollars was spent in the hope that: 1. your attention would be gained by the advertiser's message and 2. you would spend time – at least a moment – considering it. More than 131 billion dollars was spent on television advertising in 2010 – not quite twice the amount spent on direct mail, but nearly 8 times as much as was spent on radio – and each of these dollars was spent in the hope that: 1. your attention would be gained by the advertiser's message and 2. you would spend time – at least a moment – considering it. Business owners are excited about Facebook and Twitter because these social media outlets offer them potential access to – wait for it – your time and attention. Are you beginning to see a pattern here? Time and attention are currency. Shoppers today are confronted with an unprecedented number of possibilities. Welcome to the 21st century, where shoppers carry the world in their pockets, giving them instant access to everything they want to know. Now what were you saying? A 1978 consumer behavior study by Yankelovich indicated the average American of that time was confronted by more than 2,000 selling messages per day. These “selling messages” included the signage in front of strip centers, posters in windows, point-of-purchase displays in convenience stores, product packaging on shelves, stickers on gas pumps and all the major media, of course. Yankelovich revisited that study in 2008: today's shopper is confronted by more than 5,000 selling messages per day. Shoppers don't buy things until they know about them. And they have far too little time to consider all their options. This is why the value of time and attention has risen to unprecedented heights. And it's also why clarity is the new creativity. If today's advertisers want to ring the bell, win the prize and cash the check, they must: 1. Gain attention 2. Speak with impact and 3. Prove what they say 4. In the fewest possible words. A few final thoughts: 1. Radio has weathered the techno-storm better than any other media. 2. Following a brief flirtation with the iPod, Americans returned en masse to broadcast radio for exposure to new music and breaking news. 3. You can close your eyes, but you cannot close your ears. 4. How many hours a week do you spend driving? 5. World-class radio ads are cheap to produce. 6. It costs big bucks to look good on TV. 7. A modest budget for a national advertiser to produce a 30-second TV ad is $350,000. Your TV ads, by comparison, will always look “homemade.” 8. But national advertisers have no advantage over local advertisers on radio. 9. Advertising agencies can't pay the bills by producing radio ads. Their profitability – indeed their very existence – depends on their ability to steer advertisers into high production-cost ventures: television and direct mail. 10. The smart place for local advertising is usually on the radio. According to the US Census, America is home to 5.91 million businesses with fewer than 100 employees. My life's work is to help these businesses achieve greater...
