Multi-award winning, Montreal-based DJ Jojo Flores returns to Manila this Saturday, February 10, for a spectacular all-day music festival at The Ruins in Poblacion, Makati. And we get to celebrate our ONE-HUNDREDTH EPISODE by featuring Jojo, who we can confidently say, after doing this podcast for 10 years, is our favorite DJ hands down. This set recorded live in Athens, Greece, and takes us on a nice journey through the full spectrum of the Global Soul sound. Don't miss this Saturday's Not Your Typical party that starts at 2pm and ends at 12 midnight and features organizer Kristian Hernandez, Shortkut (San Francisco), Miro, Vinroc, That Girl, Marvelous, Deejay Paeste, Henry Lami, Archie Oclos, Padyak Ph, and of course the one and only Jojo Flores. This is deep house music at its very best! https://www.facebook.com/events/2025446001044991/ http://jojoflores.com/
Due to some extra out of state business travels via the 9 to 5 AND the music ends during the past few weeks, here the latest FLASHBACK episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast for the weeks of Dec. 6 & 13, 2017 [originally broadcast on the week August 20, 2008] with some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary. During that week, we had a great interview with author Douglas A. Blackmon for his book, "Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II" (now currently out on Doubleday Books), which "brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history—when a cynical new form of slavery was resurrected from the ashes of the Civil War and re-imposed on hundreds of thousands of African-Americans until the dawn of World War II" by throwing Black Men, Women and Children into prison in the South for labor purposes under false pretenses to be arrested. Feel free to check out more information about him and "Slavery By Another Name" the official book website, http://www.SlaveryByAnotherName.com. This is a special episode based off of the audio from this year's great DC PodFest panel on diversity in podcasting ("Not All Podcasters Are White") that occurred at the Wonderbread Factory in Washington, DC on Saturday, November 11, 2017 featuring DJ Fusion (FuseBox Radio Broadcast; http://www.FuseBoxRadio.com), Ebone Bell (Tagg Nation; http://www.TaggNation.com), Morgan Givens (Dispatches; http://www.goatrodeodc.com/dispatches) & Charneil Bush (What About Your Friends; https://soundcloud.com/what-about-your-friends) talking candidly about their experiences as Podcasters of Color on multiple fronts (folks' trying to put what you talk about on your show in a box from the outside community - and sometimes your own - in the realms of race, class, sexuality, etc., how everyone got started with podcasting, the hustle one has to be on to be a quality indie media outlet at large, what IS diversity honestly, how to deal with people trying to push back against your viewpoints & expressing them and more). Due to some high out of state business as of late (and the exhaustion behind it), here's a flashback episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Ausar Ra Black Hawk episode for the week of October 19, 2017 (originally broadcast for the week of December 3, 2014) with some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary. Our commentary during that week (it takes up the 1st half of the radio show; stops at about 1 hour & 25 minutes in) touched base on the travesty of the grand jury's verdict in Ferguson, MO with the killing of Michael Brown & it's after effects (the very tilted mainstream media coverage here in the States post-verdict, racists & respectability politics folks coming out from multiple angles, how it has resparked activism all over the U.S. and more), the new & old charges of sexual assault against actor Bill Cosby, some quick pop culture news items of interest (including Marvel Comics dropping a "Black Panther" movie in the upcoming future) and some other things here & there. This is a 3 hour mix of love songs by DJ Fusion based off of the FuseBox Radio Broadcast's Medium blog series folks did last year called #29DaysOfBlackLoveSongs (an extra song in the month, since leap year and whatnot), which is/was an audio celebration she did during the Black History Month 2016 that selected various tunes that express all sorts of Black Love — self-love, platonic love, romantic love, love for community, etc. - from all sorts of genres repping the Black Diaspora. Enjoy this - not just for Valentine's Day Week, but anytime! :) For the original FuseBox Radio’s 29 Days of Black Love Songs on Medium with descriptions of why said songs were chosen and more, go to: https://medium.com/fusebox-radio-s-29-days-of-black-love-songs Feel free to check out some recent episodes of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast over at our official blog, BlackRadioIsBack.com - most of the shows are clean/radio friendly. Introduction Song: A Tribe Called Quest - Youthful Expression (Jive Records) During this vacation week, folks decided to post up a few of our most popular shows of 2016 from the FuseBox Radio Broadcast. Our most downloaded & streamed episodes was our special broadcast where DJ Fusion interviewed Emidio "Mimi" Soltysik & Angela Nicole Walker, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election for the Socialist Party USA. Our “interesting” presidential election cycle (to say the least) here in the United States during the past year had people look at the balance in how 3rd parties are looked at in our current political system in terms of exposure by mainstream media outlets, if they even get any attention at all on ANY level - local, state, national, etc.. The FuseBox Radio’s 2016 Presidential Candidate Interview Sessions were put out there to assist with educating voters a bit of information about various political parties beyond the Democrat/Republican binary with what they stand for straight from the source. During our in depth interview, we talked about what exactly IS a socialist, how Emidio & Angela decided to become deeply & personally involved with politics & the Socialist Party USA, their platform (in regards to education, health care, the legal system & more), how change needs to happen from local levels on up (in the ballot box and on the streets), the politics of division & the urgent need to change that ASAP, naturally being “intersectional as f**k”, how folks have been responding to their campaign (especially since socialism has been slandered with misinformation via various places) and lots more! For more information about the Soltysik/Walker campaign, go to: http://www.Rev16.us https://twitter.com/SocialistRev16 https://www.facebook.com/Rev2016 For more information about the Socialist Party USA, go to: http://socialistparty-usa.net/ https://twitter.com/SPofUSA https://www.facebook.com/SPUSofA Feel free to check out some recent episodes of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast over at our official blog, BlackRadioIsBack.com - most of the shows are clean/radio friendly!

This week's radio show breakdown (by minutes/hours): 0:00:00 - 1:46:47 Extended Intro 1:46:47 - 2:38:51 DJ Fusion Mix 2:38:41 - 3:49:30 Ausar Ra Black Hawk Mix Our commentary during that week (the week of Feb. 3, 2016) had some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary that touched base on: • All of the shenanigans of Super Bowl 50 (the game itself, the halftime show with Coldplay, Bruno Mars & Beyonce showing the power of Black Music once again, the crazy racial vibes pre-game & during the event via the media, etc.) • The passing of songwriter, music artist & singer Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire • The upcoming Nile Rodgers & Duran Duran tour • Rihanna's new album dropping via TIDAL and the new (kinda, sorta) standards for RIAA platinum and gold certification with streaming services • Actor Don Cheadle's upcoming Miles Davis movie "Miles Ahead" • DJ Big Kap passing • Beyonce dropping her new song and video this weekend with "Formation" song, the Internet’s extreme responses to it and how far can a pop artist go with pushing their own definition of Blackness (whether for activist or superficial reasons) • Various jackassed rap beefs over the past 2 weeks (B.o.B. vs. Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Wiz Khalifa vs. Kanye West) • Kanye West being the embodiment of the bitter ex EVERYONE despises when you’re just moved and are living your life • DJ Kool Herc's old NYC block in the Bronx being now being officially called Hip-Hop Blvd. • Black Folks winning with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards • The UN talking about the need for reparations from slavery for Black Americans • Flint Water Crisis updates and new stories about issues of harmful amounts of lead being in the water all over the U.S. • Black Lives Matter’s DeRay Mckesson running for mayor of Balitmore and what that means • The African wife who crashed her fake funeral after her husband tried to kill her • And some other stuff here and there… There was no brand new Black Agenda Report news mini-segment on this week's episode due to our extended commentary. [W]e've had some amazing guest mixes over the last few weeks, and now it's back to a dose of the sound you hear regularly at MUSIC & WINE. This week's episode is the opening hour at the March 5th Gentlemen's Night--an M&W tradition of cigars, fast cars, and masculine cocktails dating back almost 3 years--and the deep organic jazzified mood of the mix says it all. There's quite a bit of raiding the crates in this set. Hear music by Ron Trent, Sun Orchestra, Robert Owens, Jazzanova, Roy Ayers, DJ Spinna, Lady Alma, and many others. Catch the full 3-hour set this Saturday night from 9-12mn on 106.7 Dream FM. P.S. For those in Manila this weekend, we'll be taking the night off (Sat Mar 12) to catch some rays in Boracay! [O]ne of Manila's most iconic house DJs Benjo Marquez graces our show with an exclusive music mix inspired by his last performance at MUSIC & WINE at Martinis in the Mandarin Oriental. Benjo has opened for some of the industry's most followed artists as they have made their way through Manila, including Louie Vega, Tortured Soul, and most recently Bob Sinclair. As the organizer of the monthly gospel house music party series SPIRIT held on Sundays at Warehouse 135 last year, Benjo brought together a unique group of family and friends that danced united by their love of the Spirit behind the music. Today, Benjo is busy as the Director of Marketing of Picasso Serviced Residences, a sophisticated boutique hotel in the heart of Makati known for its elegant art exhibits. He's not too busy, however, to put together a superb mix. P.S. For M&W fans, we'll be taking the night off the weekend at Martinis. [T]his week's guest mix is by Mothership, a team of usual suspect artists now based in Tacloban, Philippines. This set is mixed by M&W Radio favorite Kevin Ruiz (NYC). Find out more about this alien phenomenon by visiting Mothership. "We come in peace." THIS SATURDAY AT MUSIC & WINE
[W]e've got a special guest mix to help ring in the New Year by Chicago-based DJ Alex Callejo, formerly of Housejunkyz. I first connected with Alex on his last trip to Manila in 2005, when he performed at the party I was co-hosting at M Cafe called MyHOUSE (with Mark Cali-Jentes and owner Martin Wisniewski). Growing up in the fertile Chicago scene, Alex's been DJing since he was a little kid. He's played at house meccas such as the Green Dolphin, Zentra, Zippos, and Beviamo's to name a few, and has performed with Chicago house icons like the 3 Degrees Global boys, Gene Hunt, Luey, and Boo Williams. Alex and I got back in touch recently and he's recorded a gorgeous mix for musicandwineradio.com called "Simply Raw" that we're very proud to feature on this New Year's week to lift your spirits and start 2011 on a right note. Also, catch Alex's guest mix on our radio show on 106.7 Dream FM in Manila (97.3 FM in Boracay) this coming Saturday night from 9pm to midnight. So sit back, push play, and enjoy the ride. Cheers Alex! Subscribe for free with iTunes to receive this and future episodes of our podcast directly into your iPod, iPhone, or computer. The Night We Partied in HADES (As published in the Manila Standard Today, Nov 13, 2010) [H]alloween was a night full of madness and mayhem in Manila, with every hot night spot throwing their own themed parties. Without a doubt, one of the definite places to be that night was HADES: The Black Party thrown at Martinis in the Mandarin Oriental Manila. As guests approached the entrance to Martinis, they were greeting with flaming cauldrons and statues of ancient Griffins. The interior of the bar was draped in black cloth as hot models roamed around dressed in their darkest Greek godliness. Firma team Markus Schmitt and Richard Danao dressed up the space with beautiful sculptures and designer lamps. A large slab of decadent Jamon Serrano was propped up on the bar, and all night long guests were treated to ghoulish blood red cocktails and amputated finger candy treats. The waitresses in Martinis donned goddess gowns especially provided by designer Pia Gladys Perey, who was the event’s official wardrobe stylist. The special bar menu for the evening was designed by Martinis manager Javier Berenguer-Testa, and was sponsored by Belvedere vodka and San Miguel Beer. The music was dark and pumping, as DJs Elian Habayeb and Cocoy Puyat kept the partygoers dancing on the floor till the wee hours of the morning. Some notable costumes included Angelo Villanueva as a black swanned masquerader, Jon Herrera as a glamorous 17th century princess, Erika Aquino and Cheryl Tiu as matching Greek Goddesses Persephone, Frank Shrope and Jens Behrend as The Super Mario Brothers, Elian Habayeb and Ines Cabarrus as Perseus and Medusa, Tessa Dragon as a 60’s Swinger, and Arrun Bhavnani as an air flight controller. Other notable guests included Star columnist Pepper Teehankee, fashion writer Jujin Samonte, JR Isaac, the lovely Sigrid Villamil, Lucas Raven, ANC’s Boyet Sison, Events Specialist Cacay Moras, Illac Diaz, Mandarin GM Mark Bradford, Mandarin Food and Beverage Director Chico Angeles, F.A.S.H’s Ferdi Salvador, Moet-Henessey’s Olga Azarcon, glam girls Kate Moynihan, Gerri Giles, Amy Alvarez and Sarah Rosser, and SeaAir’s Nikos Gitsis. It was definitely a night that will live long in our memories—and there certainly was nothing like it in the city! Talk about one wild and crazy Halloween! I first met Tommy Bones in New York City in 2005 at the Undaground Archives Choice Awards (the Oscars of the House Music industry) where I was invited to present the award for Best DJ International (the award that year went to Montreal's own Jojo Flores for the fourth time). Tommy that year accepted the Best Emerging Talent award (an award received by Julius the Mad Thinker the previous year). I got to meet him and he handed me his latest mix on CD. Ever since, I have been listening to his epic sets available on his website and we've remained in touch. Tommy has also developed into a respected producer putting out some really sublime tracks you may have heard me play at M&W. This week, we proudly feature Tommy's Winter Music Conference 2010 Mix recorded a few months ago. Here's also an insightful article on Tommy Bones featured in Chicago's 5 Magazine and written by Czarina Mirani: "I used to see Tommy Bones at the many New York clubs I visited in the last 5 or 6 years. He was that unmistakable white kid with the huge back pack, big smile, and always made you wonder if he was old enough to be at the spot. I then started hearing his name from my dance teacher, who always made sure she rocked one of his mix CDs for her House classes. Growing up and immersing himself in the underground party scene both in his hometown in Connecticut and in nearby New York, Tommy would often be the only white kid in a scene dominated by blacks and hispanics. By the time he learned how to spin at the age of 14, he was heavy into the culture as both a DJ and a dancer. Explaining why he is known as "the dancer's DJ," he explains that "the dancers in New York are the ones that support me the most." His mixes have been transported by them to other countries via the classes they taught. That's why by the time he played a gig in Japan in 2004 "every dancer there knew my name!" Tommy has a very old-school do-it-yourself self promotion ethic that is refreshing at a time when everyone now relies on the internet. Guaranteed if you've gone to any NYC clubs in the past decade, there has to have been a point when Tommy handed you one of his mixes. "DJs and producers within my scene might look at me like I'm crazy! What they're not realizing is not only does it make me happy to hand someone a CD and hear that they love it, but I'm reaching out to more people than they are! For one CD, there might be 5 people listening to it at the same time. Or it might end up in a restaurant, or a clothing store... The Ralph Lauren store on South Beach has my whole collection and that's all they play there!" By 2003, music production was inevitable, and his material can be found on record labels Kingstreet, Wave, Ransom Note, Lionimusic, Real Tone, Nufaze, and Defected. He also just finished two remixes "Mahwuelele" for Mzee and "Keep it Rockin" for vocalist Wunmi. His positive energy is infectious and when asked what to expect from his upcoming set, he says "when I'm feeling the music I'll leave the DJ booth and go out in the middle of the floor and dance! I want to feel the crowd's energy. I want to be in the middle of the dancefloor so I can shake people's hands. My goal is to get out there and make you smile." One click on button below =) We've been in touch with Brent Crampton for years and finally met him in person in Miami at the Winter Music Conference - Mi Casa Pool Party. We are very proud to bring you this exclusive [M&W Radio] set from an amazing artist who is properly holding it down in the Midwest. Multi-award winning DJ, including Best DJ in 2006-2008 for the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards, Scion/Imeem Breakthrough Emerging Artist in 2006, named one of Omaha's top artists of the year in 2009 by The Reader and recognized as a NextAid.org artist, Brent Crampton has been pushing the boundaries of music and culture throughout the Midwest. His sound centers around the deep house and global soul movement, yet defies genres, dropping anything from underground disco, conscious hip hop, party rocking classics, post punk and world flavors such as afrobeat, samba and bhangra. Most importantly, his music has a message: Bringing people together – connecting through music – releasing in dance. Crampton founded the global soul party by the name of "loom" in 2006. It has established itself as the longest running dance party in Omaha and has had international guest DJs such as Kevin Yost, jojoflores, Sabo, FLX and Julius the Mad Thinker. Essentially, Crampton created a soulful and multicultural dance party in a middle-tier Midwestern city that previously had none. His impression has been made throughout North America and beyond, having performed in places such as London, Mexico, NYC, Chicago, Miami, Montreal, Las Vegas, Boston and Hawaii. He's promoted shows or played alongside talent such as King Britt, The Rapture DJs (The Rapture), Todd Fink & Jacob Thiele of The Faint, Alton Miller, Colette (OM), Sierra Leones Refugee Allstars, Woody McBride, Josh One and Tim Sweeney (DFA). In all, his driving ambitions have made him one of the most sought after and active DJs in the area. “There is a healing power in music - and I want to get that out to the people,” says Crampton. For more information visit www.BrentCrampton.com Here's the tracklist of the mix (for the collectors among us): 1. Love Will Find A Way - Stardust 2. In Pursuit Of The Pimp Mobile - Isaac Hayes 3. There's something about South Africa... The country has been on the tip of everyone's tongue lately. We've seen countless big musical acts perform there and we've heard countless productions and DJ sets come out of the continent's most progressive country. To top it all off, the eyes of the world are now on South Africa as the World Cup 2010 kicks off with all of its excitement and fanfare. Well we've caught South Africa 2010 fever as well here at MUSIC & WINE. This month, we are showing the football matches on the big screens at Martinis in the Mandarin Oriental; we've got Foosball tournaments organized at the front of the room every Saturday; and we are featuring South African wines by Nederberg at M&W all month long. Even our music has got Africa written all over it, with Part 1 of a special mix this week that includes tracks by MAW, Bhoddi Satva, Rancido, Black Coffee, Abicah Soul (feat Julius the Mad Thinker), Art Jones, and dunnEASY (remixed by Hallex M). Stay tuned for Part 2 of this mix coming next week. Ke Nako!!! Football + Foosball + Nugz... Check out the photos
Mr. Nugget hits Manila! (As published in the Manila Standard Today’s June 12th edition) London-based DJ and producer Mr. Nugget is on his Asian Tour and is hitting Manila venues throughout the week. On Tuesday night June 8th, he performed at Café Mondial in Pasig at an event titled “A Common Future” organized by Play Tuesdays’ Tollo Bote. “Last night was fantastic, such a great vibe, and to get everyone dancing can be a big task, especially to music they may not be used to,” says Mr. Nugget about his Café Mondial gig, “but I managed to do it, very pleased.” On Friday night June 11th, he guests at MOVE, part of M Café’s M Sessions. And on Saturday night June 12th, Mr. Nugget headlines at MUSIC & WINE at Martinis in the Mandarin Oriental playing soulful deep house music to a knowledgeable audience. “House music is really big in London now, and I’m bringing with me this sound to Manila,” he says with a confident smirk. Mr. Nugget is expected to drop his latest hot release “A Little Fire” featuring vocalist Natasha Watts (now out on Barcoda Records) and “Free” featuring Brooke Bailey, a track also remixed by DeepCitySoul that went on to become one of the soulful house gems of 2009, getting played across the globe, and registered in countless DJ's top ten on online house music megastore Traxsource. From warming up sets for the likes of Jojo Flores and Alix Alvarez, Mr. Nugget has gone on to forming his own live band, record label and promotion under the Hot Yoga brand. With an undeniable passion for house music, he has taken inspiration from the likes of MAW, Blaze, Reel People, Osunlade and Joey Negro, coining a sound that’s distinctive and filled with creativity. With his profound DJ sets that take you on a musical journey of unprecedented mixing ability, encapsulating House, Funk, Disco and Broken beat, “Nug” as his friends call him ignites dance floors across the UK and abroad on a regular basis. After playing Hong Kong’s Kee Club last week, he is in Manila this week, and he hits several cities in Vietnam next. But while he is here, we anticipate great things from the man they call Mr Nugget! Listen to Mr. Nugget’s smooth grooves on [MUSIC & WINE Radio] where he is our featured artist of the week! For more information, visit www.djmrnugget.co.uk. Originally from Boston, currently living in L.A., and credited by many for building the deep house scene in Phoenix, AZ, Joe DiPadova performs from coast to coast, frequently playing the very best events with the very best djs at his side. Quickly building a worldwide reputation as one of Global Soul's young rising stars, Joe's adept combination of DJ and music production talent, coupled with a kind, down-to-earth nature have allowed him to garner the respect and friendship not only of many deeply involved with the music, but of crowds across North America. Apart from DJing and production, one of the largest manifestations of his musical vision has come through event promotion, including his ongoing event called ONE (One People, One Soul, One Love). At this gathering, DiPadova brings together people of all color and sexual orientation through a common spool of thread - expression through dance and love of music. With eye on the forefathers of the past and an ear to the progression of the future, Joe DiPadova has become a disciple through music, serving to make positive change via rhythm & dance. Whether it's through his deep and introspective productions or his music selections in Disco, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Techno based dance music with African and Latin rhythms, DiPadova's vocabulary in music transcends generations, continents and consciousness while interweaving gatherings of people into one elevated symposium of dance. Joe is a good friend and a hell of an artist... Thanks for the great music!!!
