Don and Tom tackle some of the most common retirement planning mistakes, with a particular focus on taxes and the danger of becoming overly obsessed with them. They discuss taxable Social Security benefits, the importance of diversifying across account types, Roth conversion considerations, tax-loss harvesting, and why most retirement decisions ultimately fall into the category of “it depends.” They also answer a listener question about navigating poor 403(b) plan options and the advantages of a 457 plan for educators. Finally, they dive deep into a thoughtful challenge from a listener regarding Avantis and Dimensional factor funds versus traditional Vanguard index funds, examining the evidence for factor tilts, the role of risk premiums, costs, and whether higher expected returns justify modestly higher expense ratios.0:05 Retirement planning mistakes, taxes, retirement income, financial independence, retirement readiness1:58 Tax obsession, retirement taxes, income planning, financial priorities, wealth management2:43 Social Security taxation, taxable benefits, retirement income, Social Security myths, tax planning5:14 Tax diversification, traditional 401(k), Roth accounts, brokerage accounts, retirement savings7:57 Roth IRA, young investors, compound growth, retirement investing, tax-free income9:11 Tax-loss harvesting, brokerage accounts, capital gains, tax strategy, investment management10:03 Roth conversions, Medicare IRMAA, retirement taxes, financial planning, tax efficiency12:03 Inherited IRAs, heirs, estate planning, retirement accounts, legacy planning13:35 403(b) plans, 457 plans, retirement savings, school employees, listener question15:29 403(b) Wise, 457B Wiser, educator retirement plans, high fees, retirement options18:35 Roth IRA investing, small-cap funds, emerging markets, diversification, asset allocation19:38 Avantis funds, Dimensional funds, Vanguard funds, factor investing, index investing23:55 Fama-French research, small-value premium, indexing, active management, factor premiums26:08 Rules-based investing, passive investing, factor tilts, portfolio construction, diversification27:02 Small-cap value investing, fund performance, index comparisons, advisor value, investment returns30:25 International small value, emerging markets, factor premiums, diversification, expected returns32:55 Academic investing research, Nobel Prize economics, risk premiums, value investing, factor investing35:18 Portfolio construction, asset allocation, diversification, retirement planning, investment strategy36:16 Free portfolio review, financial advice, portfolio allocation, retirement readiness, fiduciary planningQuestions? 6/1 Proverbs 18 - Wise & Godly Words in the midst of Conflict

Most of us face conflict from time to time and God's Word tells us there IS a way to speak with wisdom, even in conflict. Today we'll work through Proverbs 18 and learn about how to work through conflict with God's wisdom. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Hopefully, you've already read Proverbs 18. Take a moment and make a note of which verses address godly speech. How many did you find? Why do you think godly speech is so important for having godly wisdom?  2.    In verse 1, why is it foolish to quarrel against wisdom? Why do people sometimes "stomp off" when faced with wisdom? How is this a reflection of verse 2, where that person just wants to "reveal their own mind"?  3.    What are the benefits of wise words in verse 4? What is the danger of foolish words in verses 6 & 7?  4.    How are whispering words described in verse 8? What do you think the author means by "whispering words"?  5.    In verse 13, how might a person give an answer "before he hears"? Why do you think this would be folly and shame to him?  6.    What is the principle of impartiality in verse 17? Why is this a key aspect of gaining wisdom?  7.    According to verse 20, what is the fruit of wise words?  8.    According to verse 21, what are the dangers of evil words?  9.    As you reflect on this quick study of Proverbs 18, which principles of these verses most describes you? Are there any areas that you need to work on, that you might be a person who speaks with wise and godly words?  Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! MEDICARE ADVANTAGE VS ORIGINAL MEDICARE: KEY DIFFERENCES WATCH ON YOUTUBE Thad Ismart, CFP®, ChFEBC, CEPS Senior Financial Planner, BWFA Tessa Hall Media and Communications Specialist About This Episode Tessa speaks with BWFA's Thad about how to compare Medicare plans and what individuals should consider when evaluating coverage options. They explain the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, along with how prescription coverage, Medigap policies, and supplemental benefits can affect overall costs. The conversation also covers travel coverage, plan comparisons, and why many individuals overpay simply because they do not review their options regularly. To better understand how Medicare planning fits into your broader retirement strategy, visit our Financial Planning services page. Read Full Description Choosing a Medicare plan involves more than comparing monthly premiums. Coverage, deductibles, prescriptions, and long-term healthcare needs can all impact which plan makes the most sense. In this episode of Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, Tessa speaks with BWFA's Thad about how to compare Medicare plans and evaluate different coverage options. They explain the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, as well as how Medigap policies and prescription drug coverage fit into the overall picture. The discussion also highlights why many individuals overpay for Medicare. In many cases, people continue using the same plan year after year without reviewing costs or comparing alternatives. Travel coverage is another important consideration. Some Medicare Advantage plans may include coverage for healthcare outside the United States, while Original Medicare typically does not. The episode also explains why comparing plans regularly matters. Even when benefits remain similar, pricing can vary significantly between providers. Ultimately, Medicare planning requires balancing costs, flexibility, and healthcare needs. Understanding your options can help you make more informed decisions, avoid unnecessary expenses, and feel more confident about your healthcare coverage throughout retirement as healthcare needs and costs continue changing over time.

All Shall Be Well: Conversations with Women in the Academy and Beyond

Welcome to The Wise & Courageous Podcast, where we host conversations with women leaders about how they are seeking and engaging wisdom and courage in their leadership and work in this unique season. “Once you have been to the edge of the cliff, it gives you a heart for others who are feeling like they are barely hanging on.” — Pamela Simmons Pamela Simmons joins Nancy Pedulla on The Wise and Courageous Podcast for a conversation about her journey to becoming an instructor who is passionate about serving community college students with a heart for each person's situation and needs. Professor Pamela Simmons found her calling as an educator while tutoring classmates as an undergraduate. She loves “demystifying” accounting — translating complex ideas into something clear, practical, and even enjoyable lessons for her students. A CPA with both an MBA and a Master's in Accounting from Kent State University, she taught at Kent State University, Hiram College, Wayne College, and Baldwin Wallace University before finding her home at the student-centered Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). She remains dedicated to helping every student overcome challenges and reach their fullest potential. How do you find the Lord's invitations in the midst of the circumstances of your life? Pamela shares her unexpected career journey, from working in the university business office to deciding she wanted to invest her time in teaching others in a student-centered college. She describes her experience as the mom of a disabled child and the way that has deeply impacted her teaching and her values. Listen for her determination to help a sight impaired student pass a challenging Accounting course. Listen to the end to hear about how prayer infuses her work with students. In this powerful first conversation, Dr. Sina McCullough shares how she went from a vibrant, athletic life to being so sick she could no longer stand, eat, or care for herself—and how she found her way back.   Despite her PhD in nutrition, Sina spent years searching for answers within the medical system, only to be told her symptoms were "all in her head." At her lowest point, she chose a different path—one that led her to uncover hidden toxicities, nutrient deficiencies, and overlooked food sensitivities that were keeping her body from healing.   In this episode, she introduces the concept of "The Veil"—the unseen trust we place in our food system—and challenges the idea that chronic illness is something we must simply manage. Instead, she offers a powerful reframe: the body is designed to heal when we remove what harms it and restore what's missing.   We also explore why diets often fail, the difference between remission and true healing, and the critical role of emotional and spiritual stress in long-term health.   Sina's message is both sobering and hopeful: healing is possible—and it begins with seeing clearly.   Stay tuned for Part 2. Governor Mills, who recently suspended her Senate campaign, takes Julia behind the scenes of that legendary White House moment when she looked Trump in the eye, said "see you in court," and won. Julia also learns how Janet navigated the ups and downs of becoming a stepmom to five young girls, and what her Republican family said when she became a Democrat.
