What does it really mean to create a “safe space” for young people in our churches—not just a place free from harm, but a place where their deepest questions and unique experiences are genuinely welcomed? In this episode, Tanita Tualla Maddox, National Director for Generational Impact for Young Life and author of What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God, helps us understand Gen Z's core questions about faith, the meaning of safety and trust, and how churches and ministry leaders can communicate and lead adaptively in today's cultural landscape.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Tanita Tualla Maddox describes Gen Z as digital natives who blend the physical and digital worlds, which shapes their outlook and identity.Stereotypes about Gen Z often paint them as weak, fragile, over-emotional, and self-centered.Tanita Tualla Maddox emphasizes that Gen Z has faced unique challenges such as growing up with social media, experiencing school shootings and lockdown drills, and living through a global pandemic.Social media exposes Gen Z to global comparison, leading many to wrestle with feelings of not being enough. The words older generations use about Gen Z—often negative—shape Gen Z's perception that they are disliked and not valued as they are.Tanita Tualla Maddox points out that generational miscommunication happens even when the same words are used, because their meanings shift between groups.Safety means more than just the absence of physical danger for Gen Z; it also encompasses emotional, psychological, and even comfort-based dimensions.Defining what makes a space or relationship "safe" often varies from person to person within Gen Z.Tanita Tualla Maddox suggests that churches should directly ask young people what makes them feel welcome and safe, rather than make assumptions.Spiritual leaders often answer questions that Gen Z is not asking, missing opportunities to address their actual concerns. The incarnation of Jesus can help Gen Z trust God, because it shows he experienced abandonment, public shame, betrayal, and other relatable human struggles.Trust for Gen Z is not automatically given to authority figures or institutions—they expect trust to be earned and proven.Safety is seen as a right by many in Gen Z, and the loss of safety can feel like a violation of that right.Truth has become highly individualized for Gen Z, with "my truth" and "speak your truth" surfacing as common phrases; this complicates their relationship to universal or absolute truths.Tanita Tualla Maddox encourages church leaders to treat generational differences as cross-cultural experiences, approaching Gen Z with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to ask questions and learn.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Tanita Tualla Maddoxtanitamaddox.comBooks mentioned:What Gen Z Really Wants to Know About God, by Tanita Tualla MaddoxThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Happy holidays, lil onions! As our gift to you this season, we've got a special extended episode on one of Ross' favorite fantasy films The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe (2005). There's so much lore here, folks. Carie surprisingly comes to the defense of Edmund Penvensie when he falls for the White Witch's charms. Ross provides a deep dive on the origins of Narnia and how it came to be vis a vi The Magician's Nephew, as well as pointing out a frustrating plot hole regarding Jadis' demise. Also Santa is here? Which makes sense. After all, the Jesus lion is here as well! Thank you all again so much for supporting us this year. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe “Human beings are not self-referential. You don't make yourself feel loved by telling yourself ‘I love you.' We are relational beings, and so we need something outside of ourselves to tell us we have value and worth.”~Dr. John Ashley Null, Humboldt University (Berlin) and Anglican Bishop of North Africa “But where, say some, is the King of America? I'll tell you, friend, he reigns above….”~Thomas Paine (1737-1809) in “Common Sense” (pub. January 10, 1776) “There has not been a ‘when' when the Father was not in existence. This, then, is true of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Put another question and I will answer it.Since when has the Son been begotten? Since as long as the Father has not been begotten.Since when has the Spirit been proceeding? Since as long as the Son has not been proceeding but being begotten in a non-temporal way that transcends explanation.”~Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329-390) in “On the Son” orations 29, chapter 3 “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of all things visible and invisible. “And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father, the only-begotten; that is of the essence of the Father, God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; by whom all things were made both in heaven and on earth. Who for us men and for our salvation came down and was incarnate and was made man; he suffered and the third day he rose again, and he ascended into heaven; from then he shall come to judge the living and the dead. “And in the Holy Spirit. “But those who say: ‘There was a time when he was not;' and ‘he was not before he was made;' and ‘he was made out of nothing,' or ‘he is of another substance' or ‘essence,' or ‘The Son of God is created,' or ‘changeable,' or ‘alterable'—they are condemned by the holy catholic and apostolic Church.”~The Nicene Creed (325 AD) “…we are not entitled to such license, I mean that of affirming what we please; we make the Holy Scriptures the rule and the measure of every tenet…”~Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335-c. 394), church leader from ancient Cappadocia; key participant in the Council of Constantinople (381AD), that confirmed and expanded the Nicene Creed (325 AD). SERMON PASSAGEselected passages (ESV)John 5 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. Philippians 24 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Psalm 21 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Advent is a time of great anticipation as we await the Christ-child entering our world at Christmas. This year, through the imagination of C.S. Lewis and his book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, join us on Sunday mornings as we uncover the story of the birth of Christ in a new way. When the Pevensie children hear Aslan's name for the first time it does different things in each of them, revealing their hearts' truest needs. The names of Christ—"Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace"—do a similar work in us. What are we most waiting for this season? The world is a cold dark and dead place! I know that sounds morbid, but it is true. C.S Lewis paints this picture in his book, "The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe" he writes, "it was all winter and no Christmas." This is a reality, a cold world without hope, but praise God for the Lion from the tribe of Judah has overcome! The Lamb that was slain is now our risen king! He was clothed in swaddling cloth only to be wrapped in burial cloth, He was born in a borrowed stable, to be buried in a borrowed tomb, the incarnation was the beginning of the crucifixion! Today we are focusing all our attention of This Lamb, The Promised Lamb, The Prophesied Lamb, The Perfect Lamb who came into the world to make our cold world of sin a means of Salvation. He is calling you today to come in from the cold and be revived, restored and redeemed, are you going to answer His call?
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland held a special meeting of its general assembly on Thursday- five weeks after its moderator and clerk, the Reverend Dr Trevor Gribben, resigned over what he called serious and significant failings in its safeguarding process. Alan Meban reports from the Assembly and then Audrey talks to former PCI Moderator Norman Hamilton and Belfast Telegraph journalist Angela Davison about what it achieved. Its 75 years since The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was published. We step into Narnia with writers Tony Macaulay and Shirley Ann McMillan and Theologian Elaine Storkey. And we also hear about the enduring popularity of the book with some kids from a local school putting on a stage version of the book this Christmas.
Belts, scarves, and hats don't look like a problem — until they quietly take over drawers, bins, and shelves. Because they're small, they often escape decision-making. And because they feel optional, we keep far more than we actually use. In this episode, we declutter the accessories that create background noise in your wardrobe and teach the skill that actually matters: making decisions without perfect certainty. Hey Friends, Coats and jackets are one of the biggest space stealers in the home. They're bulky, expensive, and rarely worn evenly — which makes them one of the hardest categories to declutter. In this episode, we focus on why letting go of jackets feels harder than it should, and how to make clear, calm decisions without second-guessing yourself. A thaw has come to Narnia, and with it comes a forerunner of Aslan: Father Christmas bringing gifts to all the Narnian animals, the Sons of Adam, and the Daughters of Eve. The gifts he brings are meant to prepare the Pevensie children for the hard work of following Aslan, who is coming. Isaiah 35 tells the story of a spring thaw too. Meanwhile, we remember that Christ also had a forerunner in his cousin, John the Baptizer. And in baptism we receive the gifts we need to follow Christ, who is coming. Well, we recently talked about the first Chronicle of Narnia … the book! Any informal shared advice, constructive criticism, final memories. Com station Top question for listeners How did you first see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)? Terri Hamilton recalls her Narnia origin tale (ep. 289): I found the Narnia series in my school library when I was in 4th grade, and yes, they were in the proper order. It was a watershed moment for me. I bought myself a boxed set a few years later. Boy, did I look for portals! When I get into a discussion about the book order, I point out The Magician's Nephew is a prequel, explaining the back story of the first book. Next on Fantastical Truth “We do not celebrate Christmas that way.” “We do not read those kinds of books.” “We ‘do not handle, do not taste, do not touch.'” We know our world is full of rebellion against God's law. But many people overreact to moral license with a strict imposing of out-of-context or made-up laws. Faithful saints call this legalism, and Christian fantasy fans know plenty about this. When that social-media pastor rebukes your favorite sci-fi, or that relative raises a judgy eyebrow at holiday dinners, how you can respond with grace, truth, and love for legalists?

Advent is a time of great anticipation as we await the Christ-child entering our world at Christmas. This year, through the imagination of C.S. Lewis and his book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, join us on Sunday mornings as we uncover the story of the birth of Christ in a new way. C. S. Lewis writes this story against the backdrop of war. Little children are shipped to the North of England, away from London bombings. Imagine the Pevensie children's fear and powerlessness, but also the power of a story like this to restore their hope. Two thousand years before, a girl not much older than Susan wondered, "How can this be?" The truest things are not always the most probable. Salvation comes in extraordinary ways. Well Dressed Nashville started in 2019 when Bonnie, a pediatric cancer nurse, saw an opportunity at an influencer closet sale. WD was supposed to be an in-person event, but when COVID hit before the first sale, she moved everything online and it took off.
