A reaction by Gary. The man arrested on suspicion of possibly trying to assassinate former president Donald Trump spent his recent years in search of a mission — trying to muster up a ragtag army to defend Ukraine and writing a book about his failed efforts, according to law enforcement officials and his online data trail.Ryan Wesley Routh was taken into police custody Sunday while FBI agents scoured his car and examined his life for clues to his actions and possible motives, according to multiple law enforcement officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to confirm the identify of the man who allegedly crouched outside a Florida golf course with a rifle while Trump played about 400 yards away.Authorities have not publicly released Routh's name. Public records show Routh, 58, as living most recently in Kaaawa on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, at a property also linked to a person named Kathleen Shaffer. No one answered when a Washington Post reporter called a number associated with the address Sunday.A blog on the crowdsourcing fundraising site GoFundMe, posted in 2022 by a Kathleen Shaffer, said she was raising funds to support her fiancé, Ryan, who “put his life at home on hold and traveled to Kyiv in April to support the people of Ukraine. He plans on staying for at least 90 days and stays at a hostel with a military unit.” Photos on the page show a slim, blond man resembling other pictures of Routh that have circulated online and in news accounts. That blog said Routh was coordinating international volunteers and had helped “send 120 drones to the front lines. Wow!” The page had collected pledges totaling $1,865 out of a goal of $2,500, which Shaffer said in the posting would go toward paying for flags, tactical gear, hostel lodging and other supplies for volunteers.Public records also show that Routh, originally from North Carolina, faced criminal charges for two separate incidents in 2002 for possession of a weapon of mass destruction. He pleaded guilty to the first charge in April 2002, a court docket filing shows, though no other details were publicly available. He also was charged in December of that year, when, according to an account from the News & Record newspaper, Routh, armed with a machine gun, barricaded himself in a United Roofing building in Greensboro for three hours. Authorities say the incident began after he was pulled over for a traffic stop. Police ultimately arrested him without incident. In that second case, he pleaded guilty to driving without a license and registration, resisting a public officer and carrying a concealed firearm, while the weapon of mass destruction charge was dropped, public records show. That was a sharp departure from a younger Routh, profiled in the same newspaper in 1991 for his assistance in helping defend a woman against an alleged rapist. Roth, then 25, was wearing a coat and tie in a large photo accompanying the story. He was dubbed a “super citizen” and awarded a Law Enforcement Oscar by the Greensboro chapter of the International Union of Police Association. The headline on the story: “Crimefighting pays.”Last year, Routh was interviewed by the New York Times for a story about Americans' often faltering efforts to provide military aid and support to Ukraine. Routh told the paper that after spending several months in Ukraine in 2022, he planned to move Afghan soldiers who had fled from the Taliban to Ukraine to fight.“We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it's such a corrupt country,” he said in an interview from Washington.Routh also apparently wrote a 291-page book last year about his disillusionment surrounding Ukraine, according to an Amazon listing that was selling the tome for $2.99.The book, which purports to be about Ukraine's “unwinnable war” and the “fatal flaw of democracy,” includes pages of graphic photos, including beheadings, dead children, & bloodied corpses. A HANDY MAN—Photographers are gearheads. They're always throwing around brand names, model numbers, product specs. So when legendary photographer Eddie Adams asked today's guest, Dan Winters, if he knew how to handle a JD-450, it was a no-brainer. He had grown up with a JD-350. So yeah, the 450 would be no problem. But here's the funny thing: the JD-450 is not made by Nikon. Or Canon. Or Fuji. Or Leica. Not even his beloved Hasselblad. Nope. The JD-450 isn't made in Tokyo, Wetzlar, or Gothenburg. The John Deere 450 bulldozer is made in Dubuque, Iowa, USA.And what Eddie Adams urgently needed right at that moment, was someone to backfill, level, and compact a trench at his farm, which, coincidentally, was prepping to host the first-ever Eddie Adams Workshop, the world-renowned photojournalism seminar, at his farm in Sullivan County, New York, near the site of the 1969 Woodstock music festival.Get to know Dan Winters a little bit, and none of this will come as a surprise to you. It also won't surprise you that the bulldozer incident isn't even the funniest part of the story of how Winters got to New York City in 1988 to launch what has become one of the most distinguished careers in the history of editorial photography. A career which began with his first job at the News-Record, a 35,000-circulation newspaper in Thousand Oaks, California. The secret—spoiler alert—to his remarkable career, Winters will say, “is based in a belief that I'm being very thorough with my pursuits and being very realistic. I'm not lying to myself about the effort I'm putting into it. Because this is not a casual pursuit at all. This is 100 percent commitment.”Well, that, and out-of-this-world talent and vision. On June 12, 2024, a concerning situation began to unfold as an official NASA live stream featured audio that appeared to reveal a medical emergency unfolding on board the International Space Station. Although the incident turned out to be a false alarm, it served as a reminder of the dangers astronauts face while in orbit. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we look at several of the most alarming incidents that have occurred in the history of spaceflight, as well as occasional encounters with unidentified objects reported by astronauts during orbital operations. Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Please consider reporting your sighting to the UAP Sightings Reporting System, a public resource for information about sightings of aerial phenomena. Last Wednesday, lawmakers convened for a widely-anticipated hearing on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) featuring testimony from witnesses that included former Navy pilots Commander Dave Fravor and Ryan Graves, and recent UAP whistleblower David Grush. In this installment of The Micah Hanks Program, we provide an analysis of last week's hearing, and the explosive statements the former military witnesses provided under oath to members of Congress about the U.S. federal government's involvement with UAP, as well as bombshell claims about the alleged coverup of a UAP crash wreckage retrieval program. A Chatcast update: The News + Record's Bill Horner III first spoke with New York Times journalist Elizabeth Williamson back in May about her new book, "Sandy Hook: An American Tragedy and the Battle for Truth," the compelling story of the aftermath of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. It's an engrossing account not of the shooting at Sandy Hook, but about what happened in the hours, the days and the months that followed as conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones of InfoWars used their platforms to incite and enrage millions of listeners and followers by telling the the tragedy didn't happen. (Jones, for example, claimed no one died at Sandy Hook and that child actors were used in the “false flag” event designed to boost gun control measures.) It's also the story of how false conspiracy narratives and malicious misinformation have gained traction in today's America.Horner and Williamson spoke again a few weeks later following the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and then again on Aug. 13, after Jones' first trial in Texas. This episode is an update recorded Friday, Oct. 21, after Jones' second trial in Connecticut.

My guest on Episode 194 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is former drummer for White Zombie, Ivan de Prume! Born in Brooklyn, then moved to Lower Manhattan where he eventually met Sean Yseult, who eventually became the bass player for White Zombie. They formed a short lived band called, "Life". Then enter Rob Cummings, also known as Rob "Dirt" Straker also known as Rob Zombie. Sean and Rob formed the band, then after their first EP "Gods on Voodoo Moon", their drummer left so they called on Ivan. He remained with the band until the middle of the "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1" tour. Releasing three full length records and a couple EP's before they signed to Geffen Records and released La Sexorcisto. He went on to produce records and had a band called "Healer" and a side project or two. He histed a weekly metal show in Portland, Oregon and continues to live a good life out there. Definitely a lot of fun to chop it up with him. Enjoy.

In this episode of NFL Fantasy Matchup, Tommy and Jed look at the news and notes coming out of Week 2 of Training Camp, their final four teams and Super Bowl Winner, and their predictions for the 4 breakout players of 2020.
Dallas Cowboys rumors today focus on big-names like Randy Gregory, CeeDee Lamb and Jaylon Smith. But there’s also a Cowboys trade rumor on Jaylen Samuels and discussion on a Cowboys record prediction. The Cowboys got CeeDee Lamb in the NFL Draft but the hype train has already gotten out of control. Michael Irvin is hyping up Lamb at a pace that, frankly, doesn’t help the rookie WR. Speaking of Lamb - get his jersey for under $80 right now: http://chatsports.com/ceedeejersey/ Cowboys news on Randy Gregory, who remains in NFL limbo. He’s not been reinstated yet, but hasn’t been told ‘no’ yet either. And he’s taking out his frustrations on Twitter with his NFLPA rep. Jaylon Smith is switching to the WLB spot, which means he might be blitzing more. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell says the Cowboys are likely going to improve this season. And Cowboys Report host Tom Downey completely agrees because he’s said this for months now! The Cowboys might have gone 8-8 last year, but they should be expecting a better result this year. Cowboys rumors also include trading for Jaylen Samuels, the Steelers RB, which makes sense in light of the Jamize Olawale opt-out. But what would be the trade value and cost? There’s also the question of the biggest concern for the Cowboys - which is at CB. Here’s the full list of Cowboys Rumors: - Cowboys Set To Improve? - Cowboys Record Prediction? - CeeDee Lamb Hype Train Out Of Control? - Trade For Jaylen Samuels? - Randy Gregory Still In Limbo? - Jaylon Smith Blitzing More? - Corner Biggest Concern? Today's top headlines: Employment meltdown: More than 20,800 Northwest Georgians out of work in April. Jobless rates soar to 12.7 to 17.1 percent across Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk, Chattooga counties. Gordon County sheriff: Tennessee couple held on numerous charges following armed standoff at the Express Inn near Calhoun. State death count at 1,933, up by 236 over 7 days; third largest gain to date. Floyd sees highest increase in positive cases in week ending Wednesday. Kemp on TV at 4 p.m. Business: Greater Community Bank opens lobbies on Monday. Berry reopens campus, weekends only, starting June 13. River Ratz: No floating this summer. Politics: Latest updates on absentee ballots, from new drop boxes to today's media briefing to scanning -- not counting -- those ballots starting June 3 in some areas. Guest column: Whit Whitaker on what Herb's Barber Shop meant to West Rome: It 'stood as an example of where and how true community is formed.' Ware Mechanical Weather Center: Two-thirds of an inch of rain today as showers, storms continue. Highs in the low to mid 80s into the weekend. Truett's Chick-fil-A Sports Update: Delay of game for announcing early college football starts. Rant of the Day: Nearly 21,000 of our neighbors were unemployed in April, the latest and continuing fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. A county-by-county look on our Hometown Headlines' website today shows just how severe the numbers are. In Floyd County, nearly 6,000 were without jobs with an unemployment rate of 13.5 percent. A year ago April, the jobless rate was 3.2 percent. In Bartow County, more than 7,000 were out of work with a 14.8 percent unemployment rate. A year earlier, a record low or near-record low of 2.9 percent was posted. Sadly, these reports will only empower the "Open Georgia" crowd even as our state's death count approaches 2,000 victims since March 5. Those Clorox drinkers got vocal on Wednesday when a local business owner announced he's closing for the season, in part because of safety concerns. Some of the reaction was not just nasty but bitter. As some of these commenting were from the business community, we hope their employers and customers react accordingly and send them to the unemployment lines. Let's see what they say then. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support
It’s Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Welcome to Raging Chicken’s Out d’Coup podcast. This is Kevin Mahoney, editor, and founder of Raging Chicken Press. On today’s show, we’ve got a Raging Chicken interview with Brian Bailie. Bailie is an Assistant Professor of rhetoric and composition at the University of Cincinnati’s Blue Ash College. He’s got some new articles that hitting the interwebs in the weeks ahead: “Are We an Academic Journal? Editing as Ethical Practice for Change,” in Reflections: A Journal of Community Engaged Writing and Rhetoric. That’s authored with Steve Parks and the article, “So, Richard Spencer is Coming to Your Campus. How He was Allowed on, and How You Can Confront Him,” due out soon in Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society. I wanted to talk to Brian today about the ways COVID-19 is giving cover for the wholesale destruction of public higher education. What’s happening at Ohio University? Since the beginning of the month, OU has eliminated the jobs of at least 340 people coupled with the retirement of another 88. 74 of those retiring are faculty members. The cuts have included layoffs of 53 instructional faculty and the elimination of 149 administrative positions. Most recently, OU announced cuts to 40% of the faculty at their regional campuses. All these cuts have been done with the cover of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s like Margaret Thatcher has returned from the dead to remind us “there’s nothing we can do.” Is this just a force of nature or are we seeing disaster capitalism on steroids? At the University of Cincinnati, we see similar patterns of cut, gut, and punish with one significant difference. While faculty members are discouraged from using the copier for class handouts in the name of saving money, the university has been on a spending spree when it comes to NCAA Division I athletics. According to an excellent investigative report by UC’s student newspaper, The News Record, records show that while UC had an athletic deficit of $5.6 million in 2005, in 2019 that deficit increased five-fold to $29.7 million. What’s that meant for faculty teaching on the University of Cincinnati’s campuses? We’ll ask Brian about that. UC’s budgeting schemes will sound like they come from the same playbook that we see right here in PA’s State System of Higher Education. Maybe because it is. And in a time when the most vulnerable are the most at risk, Ohio’s labor laws are double jeopardy for adjunct faculty. Bailie highlights the fightback coming from AAUP:UC and discusses how important it is to have collective bargaining rights and an active union. He also clues us in on an awesome student organizing effort at UC called Boldly Bankrupt. And on today’s last call, we’ll look for temporary diversions from COVID-19 and the disaster capitalists to see if we can get Brian to give us some beer recommendations from his neck of the woods. I’m wearing a Rheingeist Brewing hat in his honor! Here’s some of Bailie’s recs: Mad Tree Brewing in Cincinnati: Check out Lift - “crisp golden ale” and Psychopathy - bright citrus and floral IPA coming in around 6.9%. Saunder Brewing in Mason, OH. Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. in Cincinnati. And, Bailie gives the shout out to the employee-owned, sustainable ethos brewery New Belgium from Colorado. He says you should definitely check out their new Fat Tire Belgium White. We close out looking at signs of hope and resistance.

Heather French Henry, or Heather Renee French, or as I once knew her, just “Heather” the page designer. Or maybe the-one-who-would-not-go-out-with-us, as I would remind her. Heather French Henry, right, and Joe Wessels Heather and I have known each other since college, where she was the very kind, very capable DAAP fashion design major and, apparently, a beauty pageant contestant who happened to kill some time doing ad design and layout at the illustrious University of Cincinnati student newspaper, The News Record. In this episode, we discuss the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand's latest monthly update. 10 out of 17 regions reached record house prices, and the median house price in New Zealand was up $22.5K up on last month, to a record high of $630K. This is fantastic news for property investors and owners of property, as it means they will have more wealth in their portfolios on average. There is also good news because Auckland City and Christchurch City also achieved record prices, even as the regions have been relatively sluggish over that period. All up this is good news for the property market as we head into 2020.
In this episode of Podcast More Life, we welcome commercial photographer and owner of Rooted Media House based in Cincinnati, OH 22-year-old Nick Brown. Nick Brown comes on to the podcast to share his story of discovering his passion for photography in high school and how he quickly turned it into a thriving business in a matter of a single year. Join us as we discuss finding your passion and the power of believing in yourself. Nick shares how his confidence and skill set helped him truly realize his potential. Moreover, Nick shares his story of dropping out of college to pursue his passion full-time and shares some tips if you're debating doing the same thing. He even shares what it was like to share the decision with friends and family and how it all impacted his social life. Nick is one of the most humble and nice dudes one can ever hope to meet. Listen in as Nick humbly shares his crazy fast story of success and the many accolades and accomplishments he's already attained and he's not even 25 years old. You don't want to miss out on this incredible podcast where we learn about the power of positive thinking, hard work, and betting on yourself and your dreams. Nick Brown Bio: I have always been intrigued by art and design, but it wasn't until October of 2014 that I picked up a camera for the first time. Less than 6 months after taking my first photo on a DSLR, I won a statewide competition for photography, which qualified me for nationals. Over 20,000 students went into the photography competition at all the state levels, and I came out with 6th place honors at the national level. This was when I decided I was going to pursue photography not just as a hobby, but as a way to make a living. Thus two days after orientation for Computer Science at the University of Cincinnati, I decided to change my major to Photojournalism. Within the first week of class, I decided to get involved with the student newspaper, The News Record (TNR). The first event I shot for TNR was a soccer game, which was also the first time I had ever shot sports. I quickly adapted to shooting sports, and became the go-to guy for sports for TNR. By the time second semester rolled around, there was an opening for the Chief Photographer spot. Through all the hard work I put in for sports and other events, I was honored with receiving the position of Chief Photographer for TNR as a freshman. Through my first three semesters at UC, over 300 of my photos were published in print at The News Record. I covered an array of exciting events like Bill Clinton visiting Cincinnati, the 2016 Men's Basketball American Athletic Conference Championship in Orlando, Florida, covering the pro-soccer team FC Cincinnati, and shooting a Cleveland Cavaliers game. Currently I am in my second year at UC, but I have decided to take a semester off from college and step down from the Chief Photographer position at TNR. Why you may ask? First and foremost I can't afford to go into further debt. Oh, and I also started a photography business that I'm trying to get to gain more traction. In September of 2016, I started up a photography business with my friend Michael Millay called Cincy Rooted. We developed in the Cincinnati area and kept on growing very quickly. Thus in the summer of 2017, we changed our name to Rooted Media House, making it easier for us to expand beyond the Cincinnati region, while still staying true to our city by keeping rooted in the name. You can continue to learn about my journey by heading over to our website: www.RootedMediaHouse.com

Finally, Sam Elliott, the former Sports Editor of the News Record, calls in to deep-dive the returning players and what we should expect from them in 2019-2020 (30:30). Three Burning Questions:1. John Temple teaches reporting and writing courses at West Virginia University. His specialty area is narrative nonfiction writing. His new book 2016 Edgar Award nominee “American Pain” chronicles how two young felons built the largest painkiller distribution ring in the United States. The book, published by Rowman & Littlefield, also explores the massive rise in the use and abuse of narcotic painkillers over the past two decades. Temple is the author of two previous nonfiction books: “The Last Lawyer: The Fight to Save Death Row Inmates” (2009) and “Deadhouse: Life in a Coroner’s Office” (2005). In 2010, “The Last Lawyer” won the Scribes Book Award from the American Society of Legal Writers. More information about Temple’s books can be found at www.johntemplebooks.com. Prior to teaching at WVU, Temple taught and studied creative nonfiction writing at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned an M.F.A. Temple worked in the newspaper business for six years. He was the health/education reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, a general assignment reporter for the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., and a government and politics reporter for the Tampa Tribune in Tampa, Fla. Hollee Schwartz Temple is a journalist-turned-lawyer-turned-professor at West Virginia University College of Law. She is the co-author of Harlequin's "Good Enough is the New Perfect" and the textbook "West Virginia Legal Research." After graduating at the top of her class with a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northwestern, Hollee headed to Duke University School of Law. She graduated in 1999 and began a four-year stint as a litigation associate at a large Pittsburgh law firm. After her first son was born in 2002, Hollee returned to her firm part-time before joining the WVU faculty the next year. An active scholar and speaker, Hollee has been published in newspapers (including the Miami Herald, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and Michigan City News-Dispatch), national law reviews and legal writing publications. She has conducted seminars on generational issues and projecting professionalism in writing for large law firms. John and Hollee have also been small business owners since 2013, when they opened the Morgantown, West Virginia's party destination beauty salon known as "The Beauty Bar." Notes from the show: John takes 6 months to a year to put together a book proposal. Hollee's proposal on her first book took 3-4 months. A book proposal contains sample chapters, outline, and Hollee's included a national survey she and her co-author Beck conducted. Mentioned: The New Times article "Pain and Gain", David Simon's book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and the eponymous television show. Warner Brothers bought the rights to "American Pain," to be adapted for the screen by Melisa Wallack. Best business advice: Hollee's: "I'm the heart of the business. I can't just give that away." John's: "Stick with it until the 18 month point." Best book writing advice: John's: "You have to schedule your writing into your day and give it a prime spot in your day."
