The brilliant Wajahat Ali, author of Go Back to Where You Came From, and playwright of The Domestic Crusaders, had me on The LeftHook to share my new book A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women: 20 Steps to Find Your Purpose and Power in a World on Fire. Watch or listen to the full discussion on how to overcome the very real and urgent threat of fascism. (Side note: In France, Marine Le Pen is campaigning for president wearing an ankle monitor, following in the footsteps of her fellow Russian asset, the convicted felon/Epstein wing-man). Trump is doing to our country what he did to the East Wing of our White House. How do we rebuild from the wreckage? That's what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about. It's for anyone tired of Steve Bannon trying to demoralize us and flood the zone with sh*t. It's about concrete steps to stay grounded and focused in a world of chaos, to align your deepest needs and dreams with a higher purpose, creating world domination for the collective good. My own journey begins with being raised on stories of the government trying to kill you, and blame you for the crime, helped by Western corruption to cover-up the torture and murder. I am of course speaking of my Ukrainian heritage and the Holodomor, Stalin's genocide famine in Ukraine. In all my years of studying my family's history and the two monsters, Hitler and Stalin, who drove that history, I look back on America's own, and see the authoritarianism that established this country. The white supremacy blood lust terrorizing Black Americans, Native Americans, mass discrimination and violence against immigrants, and the list goes on. Trump, Stephen Miller, Peter Thiel, and too many others carry on that violent legacy. That's why they're aligned with the Kremlin, which sees Ukrainians as inferior. In Ukrainian culture, we're taught to fight for our very lives, our voice, our art, our culture, our language, because no one else will. They want to erase us, so we must do the opposite and shine, shine, shine. In Ukrainian culture, art is literally survival. The coded language of poetry preserves historical truth, our shared humanity, our courage and defiance. Life is incredibly stubborn. Creativity is how we fortify our resilience. A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women provides 20 concrete steps for women–who are the favorite target of fascists, because they fear the fight in us–and their allies–to dream big for themselves and the kind of world we want to live in. That is how we reset the culture, overcome their darkness with our light, and gather our people to create a better world. We are the alternative to their dystopian vision for our future, a future that belongs to us. To better get to new my new and most personal book, I put together this Q&A: Empowerment can be a privilege. Many nonwhite women, especially immigrants, are juggling several jobs just to survive. How does this book make space for different lived experiences A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is based on my own lived experience of being raised in a Ukrainian immigrant family. My grandmothers both worked as maids to survive. So I take nothing for granted when it comes to the diversity of demands on women today. Throughout the book, I share wisdom and insights from women across history. There's also a recommended reading guide in the book, featuring an incredible list of women authors, like Mikki Kendall and trans activist Raquel Willis. I also share a troubling story about a Black mentor telling me to get a white man to join me for my pitch meetings and just sit there. I'm sad to say it did make a difference. Planting seeds of hope and change – whether that's through launching a dream project like a film, book, business, non-profit, or some other ambitious goal – can be a grind. Does this book highlight organizations on the frontlines doing that unglamorous work in the shadows, helping us build that collective power? Yes, absolutely! And I made sure that the blurbs (endorsements) featured at the front of the book included voices from grassroots groups, to promote their efforts to a wider audience. Julie Delaurier of Rise and Resist began as an organizer in ACT UP and helped organize Tesla Takedown and No Kings. She also organizes to track and resist ICE raids in NYC. She read the book and provided a heartfelt endorsement. So did civil rights leader Maya Wiley, President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and Holley Atkinson of the grassroots group the Media and Democracy Project bringing legal challenges to the existence of Fox News. Isn't self-help ego-driven? A Reasonable Guide is all about collective action. Individual choices produce collective action. Think of A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women as Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way meets Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny. Self-knowledge isn't the end goal here; it's the foundation for knowing where you can make an impact. It cites women across movements and their advice on how to stay creative and build power in a time of mass destruction. But isn't this focus on the self just new age nonsense which is a slippery slope to fascism, given reports of new age online movements being breeding grounds for fascist cult recruitment? This book follows an ancient tradition of taking on an empire with the power of ideas. Ideas cannot be killed. And you cannot stop an idea whose time has come. Know thyself was popularized by the ancient Greeks, most famously by Socrates who was a champion of women for that time. The Greeks were conquered by the sadistic and corrupt Roman Empire. A couple hundred years later, the Greeks conquered them right back through the power of self-knowledge and ideas. Greek became the dominant language of the Roman Empire. Self-knowledge is not ego. The book walks you through steps to think creatively and conquer doubt in order to build meaningful collective action. I had to produce my film Mr. Jones myself because no one wanted it. Mr. Jones was a film to bring historical justice and truth to a massive genocide by the Kremlin, covered up for generations, including with the help of Western corruption. A former Ambassador to Ukraine called Mr. Jones Ukraine's Schindler's List. A screening was shut down in Moscow, and Memorial, Russia's once largest NGO that dared to screen it, was liquidated. There were death threats and harassment during the making of the film, but still the team and I fought on, holding on to the power of our creativity and voices. That is what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about: remembering the power of your voice in a world that wants to silence you and kill you. It's also a damn good time. I hope you will consider checking it out and pre-ordering A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women, which helps build buzz in the industry and gets the word out. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work over the years. It means so much.
Wisconsin Democrats narrowly chose Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over Democratic Socialist state representative Francesca Hong in the gubernatorial primary, 39.8 percent to 39.4 percent. It's close enough that this might be headed to a recount, but it doesn't appear that Hong won. Crowley, who was endorsed by Governor Tony Evers, will face Trump-endorsed Republican representative Tom Tiffany. The result halted the progressive left's recent primary momentum, but it still showed its strength in a battleground state. What you're probably going to hear about is the polling. After the polls wildly overestimated Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, the final State Navigate poll had Hong at 44 percent and Crowley at 22 percent — a 22-point Hong lead. Instead, Crowley won by 0.4 percent. That's a 22.4-point miss on the margin. Jeez Louise. Hong's vote share wasn't wildly off; the poll totally underestimated Crowley. The question is why these polls keep overrepresenting progressive-leaning voters. One theory is that more polls are using online surveys. The old problem with landline calls was that they overrepresented boomers because nobody under 60 had a landline. Nobody answers an unfamiliar number on a cellphone, so that leaves online responses, which might overrepresent progressives. It's also worth noting that the DSA endorsed Hong, but Bernie Sanders and AOC didn't. Pure DSA play isn't good enough to get you over the hump, even in a Democratic primary. Bernie and AOC provide some wiggle room away from the DSA's baggage.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. Flanagan overcame a major spending disadvantage after attacking Craig's immigration record, particularly her 2025 vote expanding ICE authority. Republicans nominated former NFL reporter Michele Tafoya, but barring huge changes in the race, Flanagan is going to be Minnesota's next senator. In the governor's race, Amy Klobuchar easily secured the Democratic nomination, while state House speaker Lisa Demuth defeated Trump-backed My Pillow founder Mike Lindell. Please raise your combs in celebration.South Carolina's emergency election to replace Lindsey Graham is headed to an August 25 runoff between interim senator Darlene Graham and Representative Ralph Norman. Graham, Lindsey's sister and Trump's endorsed candidate, finished first with 32.7 percent. Norman took the second spot with 24.6 percent, narrowly eliminating Representative Russell Fry. The vote was pretty split, and I don't know whether Darlene has the juice to keep Norman off. A lot of Republicans were already angry that she decided to seek the seat permanently instead of serving as a placeholder. Ralph Norman has a real shot. The kiss of death for Darlene would be the double endorsement — a double Trump endorsement.Former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin also defeated 14-term Democratic representative John Larson, 54 percent to 33 percent. Larson, 78, became the seventh House Democrat defeated in a primary this cycle, while Governor Ned Lamont won renomination. In Alabama, Trump-endorsed Republican Rhett Marques advanced to face Democratic representative Shomari Figures in the redrawn Second District, where the Black voting-age population was reduced from 48 percent to 40 percent.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:05:42 - Tuesday Primary Results00:16:18 - Exploring Disney's America with Andrew Heaton01:19:36 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. She's a green card holder, has lived in California for yrs, she's a teacher, with no criminal record, who's done everything right per our fucked up immigration laws, but for the past five months, she, and her husband and her high school aged son have been locked up in horrible conditions in an ICE detention facility in Texas. The Trump administration's push to execute the largest deportation campaign in U.S. history is unfolding in “a fog of fake numbers and statistical subterfuge.” That's according to The Atlantic's Nick Miroff, who covers immigration and the Department of Homeland Security. We talk to Miroff about the political pressures shaping the deportation push, the unintended consequences of blue state backlash to ICE detention facilities and how Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin is responding to attacks from far-right critics who say he's not aggressive enough on immigration. On today's podcast, Charlie Sykes and Matt discuss:—Why DSA member and failed Wisconsin candidate Francesca Hong was an “absurdly bad candidate” (and why Bernie and AOC stayed away)— How Dems realized they were about to blow a winnable race and hand Wisconsin to an election-denier, so they voted for David Crowley, a candidate who had previously dropped out of the race— Charlie says there are three things every candidate must prove to voters (Hong went 0-for-3)— Matt says 2026 is largely “baked in the cake” as a blue-wave year driven by Trump fatigue, overreach, tariffs, ICE, etc. But! Dems better not take 2028 for granted.— An Independent / Centrist / Unity-Ticket surge has Katie Hobbs (Arizona Democratic governor) picking a Republican running mate, and David Jolly (former Republican Never Trumper congressman) picking a prominent Democrat as running mate in Florida.— Can we trust the polls?— Plus: Trump's catering-truck Air Force One escape, the independent/unity-ticket surge, Minnesota, Michigan, and more.— And MUCH more!Subscribe to Matt Lewis on Substack: https://mattklewis.substack.com/Support Matt Lewis at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattlewisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MattLewisDCTwitter: https://twitter.com/mattklewisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattlewisreels/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVhSMpjOzydlnxm5TDcYn0A– Who is Matt Lewis? –Matt K. The Department of Homeland Security is planning to spend up to $20 million to purchase a new tool for ICE agents: electric shock gloves. “G.L.O.V.E” stands for “generated low output voltage emitter” and they deliver painful electric shocks used to “gain compliance” from a suspect within three seconds. The pain is described as being similar to a bee sting and proponents hope it could prevent some of the recent shooting deaths we’ve seen between ICE agents and immigrants. Those opposed question whether ICE agents can be trusted with these gloves, and could be a recipe for more harm to the public. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On January 18th, 2026, protestors marched into a church building in Saint Paul, Minnesota in the middle of the worship service. They began chanting and disrupting the space, forcing the church ushers to evacuate the children's wing and the congregation. The pastor of that church is Jonathan Parnell. Parnell also serves as the Send Network's City Missionary in the Twin Cities, where he works to encourage fellow pastors and train church planters. He is the author of Mercy for Today: A Daily Prayer from Psalm 51 (2020), Never Settle for Normal: The Proven Path to Significance and Happiness (2017) and coauthor of How to Stay Christian in Seminary (2014). While busy with rehearsals and last-minute staging to prep for tomorrow's The G. Dworkin Post-Primary Hour in Review, David Waldman had a few moments to share his thoughts on recent events. Attending the NATO summit in Turkey, Donald K. Trump bailed on his pimped-out Qatari 747 to ride home in his official 747… Psyche! They actually loaded Trump into a catering container (which should be a devastating health code violation) and onto an Airforce jet! The big question remaining is which journalists will go to prison for reporting this? Trump's staggering vanity project cash grab has been exposed… well, another one of them. This one routes national park money into gold-plated helipads and deluxe toupees. Once they were rid of Erik the Red, Greenland believed that the threat of being raped and pillaged was gone forever. Unfortunately, Dr. Phil has come ashore. Could Mike Lindell be far behind? Who knows what stupid evil awaits? Marsha Blackburn won her primary against that ever-present threat of Tennessee commies. Now, like the president, Marsha believes she's entitled to fill her own seat. Trump can thank the appointment of Bob Mueller for taking the heat off him on his Russian ties. With new tactics, ICE reaches a new high in monthly arrests, because they don't have quotas in convictions or deportations. Todd Blanche was sworn in by Emil Bove in the Oval Office because whoever's in charge has a really dark sense of humor.

[X] SB – Former NBA player officially wants WNBA You know what I love about the media these days? They're absolutely convinced they're still in charge. It's adorable. They're like the mall cop giving directions after the mall closed three years ago. "Sir, you'll need to move your vehicle. And no, there isn't even a Sears here anymore." That's the legacy media. They still think they decide what America talks about. They don't. America decides. The media reacts. And nothing proves it better than what isn't happening anymore. Remember ICE? Remember when every arrest was treated like the Normandy invasion? CNN had dramatic music. MSNBC had crying anchors. Somebody on The View was one tissue away from needing CPR. You would've thought ICE agents were kicking down the doors of orphanages. Where are those stories now? Where are the massive protests? Where's Antifa? Where are the college students chaining themselves to Starbucks because America deported somebody with six felony convictions? Gone. What happened? Did ICE stop? No. Did deportations stop? No. Did immigration suddenly become less important? No. What stopped... ...was the media's ability to manufacture outrage. That's a huge difference. America's border has undergone one of the most dramatic turnarounds in modern history. In this exclusive conversation, Border Czar Tom Homan joins Erick Stakelbeck from the White House to reveal how the Trump administration transformed what was once the worst border crisis in U.S. history into what Homan calls the most secure southern border America has ever had. Homan explains why catch-and-release is over, illegal crossings have plummeted, and ICE is conducting record numbers of arrests and deportations despite unprecedented political opposition, lawsuits, and attacks against federal agents. He also addresses the misinformation surrounding immigration enforcement and why he believes the American people deserve to hear what is actually happening on the ground. Homan delivers a blunt message: America's border is finally under control—but the work isn't finished. From the search for nearly 150,000 missing migrant children and the ongoing effort to locate every one of them to the dismantling the cartels to removing dangerous criminal aliens and protecting the homeland from terrorist threats, he says the mission now is to finish what was started. The border is secure. The cartels are hurting. And America is taking its sovereignty back. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This is an encore episode of 'The View' — new episodes return Tuesday, September 8! The View co-hosts weigh in on Britain's plan to ban children under 16 from social media following Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement of a major policy shift and question whether the United States should impose similar restrictions. Vice President JD Vance joins the table to address the state of the economy under the Trump administration, sharing his view that “there's a lot more work to do” and that voters will ultimately decide in November whether the administration has done a good job. When pressed on the administration's immigration crackdown and use of ICE, he tells The View: “We do have to strike a balance, of course, between enforcing our laws. We don't want to dehumanize people.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Trump administration has been unabashed in its intention to criminalize dissent, labeling protestors “domestic terrorists.” A recent verdict against anti-ICE protestors in Texas promises to be consequential in that effort. Scholar Thomas Zeitzoff reflects on the administration's widespread attempts to quash opposition, from targeting fundraising by liberal nonprofits, knocking on the doors of former activists, or charging people with conspiracy for communicating on Signal about protests. The third season of the fantasy drama television series House of the Dragon premiered on HBO on June 21, 2026, in the United States, and will consist of eight episodes. The season covers the events of the book Fire & Blood, a prequel novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. The season follows in the aftermath of the second season's final episodes, in which the war known as the "Dance of Dragons" between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen continues, causing House Targaryen to become further divided. Aegon is supported by the Green Council and his mother Alicent Hightower, while Rhaenyra is supported by the Black Council and her husband and uncle Daemon Targaryen, both sides seeking allies from the great houses of Westeros and fighting for the support of their armies to claim their rightful positions to the Iron Throne.Hosted on Ausha. This week on The Necessary Conversation, Chad, Haley, and Mary Lou cover the biggest stories in American politics.⚖️ The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche — Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer — as the permanent Attorney General by a single vote. Mom was told Blanche was just an interim replacement. That was a lie. Blanche has already withheld over 3 million Epstein documents, doxxed victims including their nude photos, and negotiated the deal that made Trump and his family permanently immune from paying taxes. We ask Mom: do you see the conflict of interest now?⛽ Iran published its list of demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since February: end the war permanently, lift the naval blockade, withdraw U.S. forces, lift sanctions, release frozen assets, and pay war reparations. Trump and Rubio are unlikely to agree because it would mean admitting they lost. We ask: should Trump just meet the demands and get gas prices back down?

Hauling 20 Amazon boxes up to a seventh-floor dorm is one kind of reality check. Watching a major political party insist its most extreme slogans are “not really happening” is another. We start with a very relatable back-to-college story, then pivot hard into the headlines shaping national and New Mexico politics and why so many voters feel like they're being sold a version of reality that doesn't match what they see with their own eyes.We unpack the growing rift inside the Democratic Party, including Bernie Sanders' attempt to downplay positions like defund the police, abolish ICE, and open borders, and why that conflicts with what prominent candidates have actually said. From there, we look at how party leadership tries to normalize internal upheaval, why comparisons to the Tea Party miss key differences, and what happens when activists gain influence faster than institutions can respond.Next we dig into Michigan's Senate race as a warning label for swing states: how primary dynamics reward purity tests, why general-election voters react differently, and what recent polling and prediction-market shifts suggest about nominee risk. Then we zoom out to the economy and media framing, using the “23,000 jobs lost” story to show how one-month headlines can obscure the underlying drivers while families still feel hammered by inflation, energy prices, and higher interest rates. On the New Mexico front, we cover voter registration changes, a controversy over Gabe Vasquez and the Fraternal Order of Police logo, the decision to let some law grads practice without passing the bar exam, and the renewed fight over repealing the state income tax. We also end on forward-looking optimism: domestic semiconductor manufacturing, mining and rare earths, and why trade school careers are becoming one of the clearest paths to stability and upward mobility. Once again, desperate people are being weaponized by fascist regimes. Why did over 60,000 immigrants from the authoritarian regime of Morocco, a regime aligned with Trump, rush the border of Spain, an enemy of Trump? Gaslit Nation has questions. The Russian disinformation factories have been pumping out floods of videos and shock-porn social media posts, including several hundred in Spanish. Gaslit Nation investigates to see if there is more to the story. MAGA influencers Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie, who led the bipartisan Epstein legislation, seem to think so. To listen to the full recording of this segment, which opened Monday's salon, including the Q&A on the shocking events in Morocco and Spain, be sure to sign up at Patreon.com/Gaslit, GaslitNation.Substack.com, or grab a membership on YouTube. This week's bonus show was the extended conversation with kleptocracy expert Casey Michel, sanctioned by Russia, and the author of the new book United States of Oligarchy. This week's upcoming salon will be hosted by longtime listeners and salon regulars Bethany and Lisa. On Monday August 17 at 4pm ET we're opening up our salon for all to hold a letter writing party for the Prairieland Defendants, the group of "antifa" activists given a combined 556 years in prison for protesting a brutal ICE detention center. It's a Soviet-style case of political repression, and history will be on their side. But let's bring them comfort and solidarity now by writing them letters in prison. This event is open to all so be sure to invite your friends. The Zoom link will be posted and open to the public on Patreon, Substack and on our socials. Be sure to share it to help us get out the word. For more on their story, listen to Gaslit Nation's episode in the show notes called "Free the Prairieland Defendants and All Political Prisoners." Join our community of listeners and get bonus shows, ad free listening, group chats with other listeners, ways to shape the show, invites to exclusive events like our Monday political salons at 4pm ET over Zoom, and more! In this episode, Alyson and Breht examine the Trump administration's emerging campaign against what it calls "far-left terrorism." We begin with NSPM-7, the presidential directive encouraging federal agencies to investigate not only alleged political violence, but the organizations, funders, media networks, and ideological communities surrounding it. We then look at two distinct examples of this framework in practice: the sweeping Prairieland prosecutions in Texas, where defendants received extraordinarily severe terrorism-related sentences, and the separate crackdown in Minnesota following anti-ICE mobilizations and political unrest. From there, we analyze Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller's international counterterrorism summit, the effort to redirect the machinery of the War on Terror toward the anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist left, and the State Department's Cuba document, which portrays socialism, anti-imperialism, Palestine solidarity, and antifascism as parts of a foreign-influenced revolutionary network. Finally, we ask whether the United States has entered a new Red Scare, what may come next, and how left-wing individuals, media outlets, and organizations can protect themselves without abandoning their political work.
