In this return to the long-form interview format, The Cinematologists are deeply honoured to welcome Professor Vivian Sobchack to the podcast. In an incredibly profound and wide-ranging conversation, Dario discusses with Prof. Sobchack a diverse array of topics related to her work and life as one of the most important and influential thinkers and writers on cinema. The subjects covered include: The Evolution of Film Studies: Vivian reflects on film studies' early formation in the United States and the profound impact of phenomenology on the discipline. She shares rich insights into how our embodied experience shapes our interaction with films. Her Personal Journey: Vivian offers fascinating accounts of being a young female scholar during the early formation of film studies, providing unique historical perspectives on the discipline's growth. Film Phenomenology: If the episode has a central theme, it is Vivian's groundbreaking legacy in film phenomenology. She contextualizes her work within a broader framework, contrasting it with Marxist and psychoanalytic film criticism, and highlights the distinct contributions phenomenology offers to the study of cinema. Cinema as an Immersive Experience: The conversation explores the intricate relationship between viewers and films, emphasising the shared, immersive experience that makes cinema a unique cultural and artistic event. Genre Analysis and Science Fiction: Vivian discusses her analysis of genre, particularly focusing on science fiction. She draws on the cultural and philosophical implications of films like Arrival, Inception, and Her. Reflecting on the interview, Dario and Neil unpack how Prof. Sobchack's work provides invaluable insights for developing more nuanced ways of thinking about the filmic experience. They discuss how her scholarship underscores cinema's role as a mirror to culture, technology, and the human condition. The episode highlights the importance of creating space for in-depth academic dialogue and explores the personal impact Sobchack's work has had on the hosts. Neil and Dario also delve into the multifaceted relationship between cinema and its audience, emphasising the need to engage with film as an experience rather than merely consuming it. Prof Sobchack's Biography: Vivian Sobchack, born in 1940 in New York City, is widely regarded as one of the most influential American film theorists of the past 25 years. In the early 1990s, she played a pivotal role in re-establishing phenomenology as a vital methodology in film studies with her groundbreaking book, The Address of the Eye: A Phenomenology of Film Experience (1992). Her work emphasizes the bodily and material foundations of film viewing, championing an existential-phenomenological approach to moving image media. This perspective is articulated with particular elegance in her celebrated collection of essays, Carnal Thoughts: Embodiment and Moving Image Culture (2004). A trailblazer in the field, Sobchack was the first woman elected President of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (1985-1987) and received the organization's Distinguished Career Achievement Award in 2012. She served for over 20 years as the sole academic member of the Board of Directors at the American Film Institute (AFI). From 1992 to 2005, Sobchack was Associate Dean and Professor at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. She continues to inspire new generations of scholars as Professor Emerita at UCLA.

Bruce Francis Cole is an esteemed cinematographer whose career has traversed both coasts of the United States and extended globally. Born and raised in Upstate New York, his artistic journey began in a surprising place—painting. Before transitioning to cinematography, Bruce honed his skills as a classical painter, drawing inspiration from the likes of Vermeer, Picasso, and Rembrandt. These formative years of artistic exploration instilled in him a deep understanding of color, light, and composition, which would later become the hallmark of his cinematic work. Bruce's path to cinematography was as unique as it was diverse. Raised in the inner-city, his exceptional talent in visual art opened doors to experiences far beyond his immediate surroundings. Fuelled by his passion for social justice, Bruce embarked on a journey across America, dedicating himself to non-profit programs that aimed to make a positive impact on society. This period of exploration and activism eventually led him to discover film as a powerful art form. His formal education in cinematography took place at both the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), where he studied under luminaries like David Gordon Green and Jeff Nichols, and later, at The American Film Institute (AFI). At AFI, he refined his craft under the mentorship of renowned cinematographers Bill Dill, A.S.C., and Stephen Lighthill, A.S.C. This academic foundation paved the way for Bruce's ascent in the film industry. Bruce's cinematic portfolio boasts a diverse range of projects, from TV shows like "Queen Sugar" and "Queer as Folk" to acclaimed films such as "Farewell Amor" and "Jinn." Notably, his international short film "Gringo Honeymoon" earned a nomination for Best Cinematography at The Madrid International Film Festival in 2015. Beyond these achievements, Bruce has lent his visual expertise to commercial giants like Nike and Apple, where he artfully blends creativity with commercial branding. His passion for storytelling through the lens extends to his work with top-tier musicians, including Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Eminem, Shakira, T.I., Wyclef Jean, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, and Linda Perry, among others. Bruce's cinematography skills have graced music videos that have left an indelible mark on the industry. This podcast delves into the intricate layers of Bruce Francis Cole's artistic journey, unveiling the intersections of painting, activism, and cinematography that have shaped his unique perspective. From his inner-city upbringing to his evolution as a visual artist, his story is a testament to the transformative power of art. Theoretische Schnitt-Analysen, praktische Tipps und Tricks und zahllose “How to's”. "Mank" is one of 2020's most technically dazzling films. David Fincher's perfectionism transported us back to the Golden Age of Hollywood to tell us the story of Academy Award winning screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman) and the film has been hailed as one of the year's best, most recently being rewarded as one of the Top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute (AFI). Many members from the film's production were kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the film including Academy Award-nominated sound designer Ren Klyce, Costume Designer Trish Summerville & Co-Producer/VFX Producer, Peter Mavromates. Our twisted humor is brought to you by William Phoenix, the man that taps his way into your heart one pun at a time, with his obsession of Harry Potter and Marvel; then the film snob of the group, Luis Lacau, that will bleed his film heart out for Kubrick and Lord of the Rings, but nothing else; finally our host with not the most, Branden Lacau. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian postulant in Salzburg, Austria, in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children.[4] After bringing love and music into the lives of the family, she marries the officer and, together with the children, finds a way to survive the loss of their homeland to the Nazis. The film was released on March 2, 1965, in the United States, initially as a limited roadshow theatrical release. Although critical response to the film was mixed, the film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time—surpassing Gone with the Wind—and held that distinction for five years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries. Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000.The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time, and the fourth greatest movie musical. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Movies Discussed:The Sound of Music West Side Story Hedwig and the Angry InchJersey BoysAmistadJoin our Man Bites Media Family every Friday as we bring you 5 films each week and the latest movie news.www.ManBitesFilm.com#Comedy #Horror #Netflixmovies #Amazonprime #Hulumovies #Luislacau #Manbitesmedia #Manbitesfilm #Brandenlacau #williamphoenix #Hulu #Shudder #Netflixoriginal #Hulu #Scifi #Comedies #Dramaseries #mbm #podcast #fandom #nerds #geeks #moviesreview #anime #miamireviews #newyorkmovies #Orlandomovies

ERASERHEAD (1977) may be the most well-made student film ever produced. As a brilliant piece of film history, it is forever cemented in as the ultimate cult film and perfect midnight movie. David Lynch was able to create a deeply personal and mesmerizingly quirky film which was the first of its kind. Strikingly bold visuals, an unnerving soundscape and oddball characters help create a grim, surrealist story wherein the viewer is submerged in a bizarre, yet mysteriously familiar world. ▶️Synopsis: Set in an industrial, dismal environment, Henry is confronted with meeting his girlfriend Mary’s off-kilter family, then discovering he is the father to a premature newborn, which appears to be inhuman. This is a richly nightmarish reality which feeds common anxieties concerning relationships, parenthood, regret, life and death. ⏩⏩Discussions include: Lynch’s relationship with The American Film Institute (AFI), the community effort which made ERASERHEAD possible and how Lynch’s underlying personal narrative flowed into the plot and themes. In addition, we’ll discuss how a direct story is told through surrealist, subconscious visions and very intentional sound design, leading to why the film is open for interpretation. We’ll further explain our favorite moments in the film, give a ton of behind-the-scenes information and how ERASERHEAD is connected to other subsequent Lynch projects. **Starring Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph, Jeanne Bates. Directed by David Lynch.** ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** Lindsay's Pick — BLUE VELVET (1986): This neo-noir mystery follows an innocently curious man discovering a disembodied ear, leading to a possible romance, but also a criminal underworld of drugs, violence and sexual trauma. An unreal, yet familiar world where voyeurism becomes addicting. **Starring Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern, Dean Stockwell. Directed by David Lynch.** AVAILABLE ON TUBI NOW! Justin’s Pick — THE STRAIGHT STORY (1999): An elderly man embarks on a 240 mile journey to visit his ailing, estranged brother. Having no other way to travel, he uses his riding lawnmower to complete his quest. An unusual road trip film, which is also based on a true story. **Starring Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, Harry Dean Stanton. Directed by David Lynch.** ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: With all this talk concerning parenthood in ERASERHEAD, we’ll scrape the surface of Billy’s upbringing and his eventual turn into becoming a father of six boys. ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: We need to talk about the newborn in ERASERHEAD... ▶️NEXT UP: THE ‘BURBS (1989)!
Luckily I got to speak to Bill Duke! Film director and actor Bill Duke was born on February 26, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, New York and is the son of Ethel Douglas Duke and William Duke, Sr. After earning his A.A. degree from Dutchess Community College, Duke became interested in the performing arts while attending Boston University, although he initially enrolled as a pre-med student. He eventually majored in theater there and then went on to earn a M.A. degree in fine arts from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Duke later enrolled in the American Film Institute (AFI). Duke began his career as an actor in New York City theaters like The Public Theater and New Federal Theater, performing in plays such as LeRoi Jones' Slave Ship and Melvin Van Peebles' musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death. Duke's first movie role came in 1976 when he portrayed a fierce young Black Muslim revolutionary named “Abdullah Mohammed Akbar” in Car Wash. Duke's television directorial debut came in 1982 when he directed episodes of Knot's Landing, Falcon Crest, and Flamingo Road for Lorimar Productions. Duke's most prominent and critically acclaimed television work, however, has been his direction of teleplays for the PBS series American Playhouse including “The Killing Floor,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” and “The Meeting,” a 90-minute drama that depicted an imaginary meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. During the 1980s, Duke amassed more than 100 television directing credits, including more than 70 episodes of roughly 20 television series such as Miami Vice, Dallas, Crime Story, Cagney and Lacey and Hill Street Blues. Duke directed his first feature film in 1990, a film adaptation of Chester Himes' novel A Rage in Harlem. Duke went on to direct many other films including Deep Cover, Sister Act 2, Hoodlum and Deacons for Defense. In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Duke to the California Film Commission, which works to enhance the economic climate of the state by keeping film industry jobs in California. Duke also works with non-profit and charity organizations such as Educating Young Minds, an organization that helps inner-city students excel at school and in life. Duke is the recipient of numerous awards including the AFI's Lifetime Achievement Award, the NAACP's Special Award for Outstanding Achievement, SCLC's Drum Major for Justice Film Award and a Cable Ace Award. President Bill Clinton appointed Duke to the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1997, the American Film Institute (AFI) made a list of what they considered the 100 Greatest American Movies. Star Wars placed 15th. In 2007, the AFI released a 10th Anniversary list which placed Star Wars at number 13. I had assumed they would do a 20th Anniversary list in 2017, but they did not, which left me a bit surprised. So for today's episode, let us imagine where Star Wars would place if they were to release a new list. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pageturnerstheywerenot/support
