Keyaira Miller, Lead Business Partner at Target, brings a broad set of Retail experiences and expertise spanning over 16 years within the areas of Buying, Sourcing, Product Development and Brand Management. Keyaira is a Lead Business Partner on the Merchandising Vendor Development Team at Target Headquarters. In her current role, she is responsible for sourcing, connecting, growing and amplifying emerging diverse and/or women owned brands to support Target's merchandising strategies and drive inclusive assortment for Target's diverse guests. Her notable and most recent work includes helping curate Target's Black History Month Assortments, Tabitha Brown's Limited Time Apparel and Food launches and Target's Activation booths and programming at Essence Fest in New Orleans. Keyaira has a passion for retaining and growing brands, allowing them to reach their fullest potential by empowering them with the right foundational tools, partners and resources in hopes that it creates a space to fuel generational wealth and drive economic vitality and equity. Prior to Target, Keyaira was at Amazon Fashion, leading the Women's Product Development team within Private Brands. Much of what Keyaira loves is involved with collaboration and connection. Assembling a team with gifts different than mine, who shine in ways I don't have, has been both inspiring and crucial to my success. Keyaira is a 2002 Graduate of West High school in Waterloo, IA and has degrees from The University of Northern Iowa and The Academy of Arts University. Keyaira currently resides in Waterloo with her loving husband and 10-year-old old son. Here's what we covered on the episode: How I met Keyaira when she was speaking at a panel at The Black and Brown Summit, a local event I attended in earlier this year, and I wondered how a girl from Iowa got to work with brands at Target Keyaira shares that at an early age she was always was interested in fashion, and was fascinated by how fashion worked She knew that the University of UNI had a great fashion and textiles program and the program showed her the familiarity she needed to know to get the opportunities she wanted Initially, she was interested in the buying part of fashion and she got her first opportunities by networking and cold calling, as this was before the opportunity By building up her network, working in retail in high school, she got her first opportunity in the field at Target in Minneapolis Melissa and Keyaira shared the same experience of not having an awareness of big fashion brands like Louis Vuitton or Manolo Blahnik growing up in Iowa until we saw Sex and the City Keyaira used her experience working at Victoria's Secret when she was younger and worked as an intern for Von Maur How she got laid off from Target after a few months during the recession, but they called her back shortly after Knowing Yourself, Knowing Your Wealth, and Knowing the Shelf Why it's important for Keyaira to equip the brand she works with to be successful at any retailer that they chose, showing them how to know themselves, know their wealth and know the shelf Know yourself: do you know yourself and do you have the capacity + capability to really scale in retail?  Being “retail ready” means you must be ready to get a retailer a shipment of 20,000 units in less than 2 weeks when they're ready to give you a PO, your answer should be yes Know your wealth: You really have to be truthful and honest with yourself that you're in the right place to be in retail, as it could put you out of business if you're not ready Know the shelf: you must understand your competition and understand the retailer where you want to be. Where do you want your product to be placed? Go there and take a picture to see if it fits there.    Melissa shared how she learned through her own desire to start a mascara line, but she decided to put that on hold Keyaira shares that she currently works within food and beverage, but may crossover in apparel, beauty and more Why Melissa is excited to learn more about what Keyaira does because it helps her and her audience learn how the retail sourcing process works The ins and outs of how Keyaira's team at Target works How Keyaira's team works with retail-ready brands, and learns more about them, like what their costs are, what retailers they're already in, and making sure that they're aligning brands that match the merchant strategies Each merchant or buyer has a strategy they want to follow, for example, bringing in more diverse brands for rice and beans Keyaira shares how she finds out about up and coming brands events, online and has a collaborative conversation with her merchant and buyer, who have the final say on who makes the final decision If they're interested in a brand, then Keyaira helps them get ready for a line review, and making a great impression and staying in touch with your buyer to continue the conversation Why Keyaira recommends brands have patience in the retail process; buyers change hands all the time, timing is everything and next year it could fit right into the new strategy How over the years of talking to vendors and understanding why it's so important to know yourself before you start a business, even though in this day and age anyone can start a business Keyaira shares an example of a luxury brand who was already on the shelf at Saks, and how they were adamant about being on the shelf at Target, but it wasn't really a fit for the brand Why having the awareness that as your business scales, your team must scale as well, or knowing when you need to bring in a distributor, and being able to re-evaluate your business on a consistent basis Keyaira's perspective on partnerships Keyaira shares an example of a how they did a small activation with Coca-Cola and to amplify black-owned brands like Ghetto Gastro with food demos, and created a moment with guests to have a connection and wanted to have a Coke The goal now is to drive guest discoverability with classic, iconic brands to drive awareness to brands like Ghetto Gastro How Target works with organizations like WBENC, and why those partnerships are crucial to the success because it's another layer that helps creates success and inclusivity  Melissa shares that her experience at Dress for Success Worldwide opened her eyes to different brand activations and partnerships that were out there and happening in the real world  How a lot of what Keyaira does is organic and fluid; but how her role and the area of business and the human centric approach matters, and why that's missing from a lot of brands  Why Keyaira loves meeting new brands and learning more about them Why inclusive design matters How inclusive design has been around for a long time, but now it's getting recognition it deserves Why there's power in leaning into inclusive design, and why it's a huge misconception, for example, that all black-owned brands are only designed for black people A lot of times, the brand is only serving products for everyone Why Keyaira recommends that brands celebrate heritage, and how data shows that buyers wanna support brands that have that messaging that celebrate heritage Why brands are now putting the logos of the causes they support and the certifications you have on your packaging Buyers are looking to bring cultures together; and how Target is seeing data that backs it up Why it's important for brand to have inclusive brands, inclusive products and as it relates to design and branding, it's not going away Why more retailers are going to lean into it more, and why brands should lean to it, be authentic to it, showcase it and not hide it  Sometimes when brands get ready to be inside of a retailer, they want to change their mission statement but there's beauty in who you are, and stay authentic to your brand and yourself  How you can connect with Keyaira on Instagram or send her a message at keyaira.k.miller@gmail.com Links mentioned: Connect with Keyaira on Instagram Learn more about Keyaira's role at Target   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. What explains the bumper retail sales this festival season?

Business Standard Podcast

The festival season is here. Retailers, both offline and online, have rolled out carpet discounts on all categories of items, from electronics to fashion to appliances. In a festive season without Covid restrictions after two years, consumer demand has shot up, despite the soaring inflation. The festival sale, which started on September 23, is expected to be month-long and last till Diwali. Ahead of festival season, retail businesses across India have reported a moderate growth of 15% in sales in August 2022, as compared to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, according to a survey by Retailers Association of India. The trend captured during this period suggests that most items were hit by inflation. While higher priced items reported good growth, driven by upper middle and elite class, sales of lower priced items were not that impressive. On what the early signs are looking like for the offline retail segment, Kumar Rajagopalan from Retailers Association of India tells us more [Byte of Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, Retailers Association of India] Once the sale season kicked-in, both online and offline retailers doled out steep discounts in order to woo consumers. The discounts are also coupled with big cashbacks and other offers. Internet marketplaces have run a marketing blitzkrieg, hired additional workforce and rolled out other sops including a partial waiver of seller fee. In the online segment, Redseer Consulting expects the internet e-commerce companies to clock a 28 per cent year-on-year growth in sales at nearly $12 billion during the sale month. In Covid-hit 2020 and 2021, e-commerce companies clocked overall sales of $7.5 billion and $9.2 billion respectively. Amazon and Flipkart accounted for 90 per cent of overall festival sales in 2021. The bumper sales in the festival month this year are expected to push the online retail gross merchandise value to $68 billion in 2022, up 30% from last year. Another survey found that 83% of consumers are willing to shop this festive season, with a strong sentiment for fashion and electronics appliances. The early signs are encouraging and are in line with the forecast. The first four days of the festival sale saw the overall daily average gross merchandise value, which is the total value of items sold in a given period, rise to 5.4 times when compared with the business-as-usual (BAU) days for the overall online retail, according to a report from the redseer. The business-as-usual days are non-sale days. The growth is driven mainly by fashion and mobiles. Mobile phones have seen a 10-time jump in terms of daily average GMV and an estimated 50-55 million shoppers made purchases in the first four days, according to a report from the redseer. Meanwhile, fashion, including apparel and footwear, saw a jump of 4 times in daily average GMV from BAU days. The fashion segment was muted in the last two years due to the pandemic. Overall, the first four days of the festival sale have been better than that of last year. It stood at $3.4 billion, making up for 60% of the projections. Last year it stood at $4.8-billion. The first week of sales is expected to reach $5.4 billion. Most of the demand is also coming from non-metros and tier 2, 3 cities. According to unicommerce, over 60 per cent sales for Amazon Fashion came from tier 2 and 3 cities in the first two days. Meesho said 85 per cent of its first day sales came from tier 2 cities and beyond. According to redseer, the tier-2 plus growth wave is driven by reverse migration, digital adoption and value offers post Covid. So, what is driving this retail buying frenzy online?    Sanjay Kothari, Associate Partner, Redseer Consulting says, hangover of Covid forced people to stay muted for last two years. Consumer sentiment improved over the last couple of months. Clear indications of people wanting to spend on high-ticket items. The first part of the festival month is off to a good start and analysts expect the trend to con

Shar Biggers is the creative director and founder of Provoke Design, a branding studio. A native of Atlanta, by way of St. Louis, she holds an MBA in business management and is a graduate of Miami Ad School's Portfolio Center of Design. In her extensive experience, she has worked with Fortune 500 companies, led design for Amazon rebrands like Amazon Fashion and Amazon Diversity, and helped more than 10 million Americans say "I'm with her" for Hillary Clinton.   Here's what we covered on the episode: Underrepresented Populations + Provoke Design  How we originally met Shar on Episode 170 of The design Business Show and why I invited her back on to discuss how a lack of investment in banding can create limitations for underrepresented populations  Shar's created her agency, Provoke Design, to provide branding for all different types of businesses – specifically, businesses led by color, businesses led by women, and businesses led by people who may come from backgrounds who may not have the funds necessary to succeed in their business Just because you come from one of these three groups doesn't mean you don't have a good business concept, idea, product or service, or leadership Shar expresses how much of a struggle it can be to see these businesses come in but not have the resources or funding available to get them to where they need to go, and not have the awareness needed to have a strong brand and marketing presence that they need to succeed Too often throughout Shar's experiences, she would see those businesses not be able to approach the agencies she knew of or were so well known, which created a massive gap that Shar saw needed to be filled because she could see how it affected the economy and diversity in business How there are so many examples of where representation for these 3 groups does not exist Many people who do not fall into these groups usually get money from friends and family for their first investments when starting a business, which is the first stumbling block when it comes to underrepresented people because they don't usually have people they can turn to When you come from an underrepresented group and are starting a business, Shar says you are probably the breadwinner - the reason they are trying to launch a business is to try to help the family and leave a legacy Shar says she is thankful to have gone to school for an MBA because being educated in psychology and business first and design second has helped shape the type of way she wants to do business  Once Shar sees those businesses that have a need, she tends to consult them on business overall - product design, product name, digital presence and asks questions like, what's customer service like, do people like your company, is your product/service actually strong and solving a problem, or do you need to pivot Sometimes when people come to Provoke, they don't have an idea at all, or they have a failing idea and need help figuring out an idea that will do better – they are coming at different phases, Shar says, some need a rebrand, and some need help with their overall brand to make it stronger Using Design to Help Solve World Problems  Shar explains there are some things in place that make it really hard for these underrepresented groups to qualify or get approved; that's why she created a business where some of their biggest blocks can be solved through the branding and design work they do Why Shar believes design thinking is the way of the future and the way businesses should be led - she believes if the world's biggest problems were in the hands of designers, they would be solved Shar's advice for designers is to think about the things you are passionate about and would like to see solved and think about how you can help solve that thing in a beautiful way  Another great suggestion Shar has for designers is to think about including a certain number of pro bono projects or discounted projects per year for underrepresented groups so they can have more accessibility  Sometimes designers don't think their work is that serious when it comes to branding, but Shar explains that it can help determine how great of a legacy these underrepresented groups can leave their families, which impacts the nation and is why were need to be more thoughtful and empathetic towards finding a solution to this problem  If you don't see anyone solving the issue that you feel needs to be solved, you should think about how you can solve it  Even if you aren't an expert in something, that doesn't mean you can't make a difference in that area with the skillset and knowledge you do have How the majority of people don't realize how social, economic, or racial problems aren't just limited to health care or housing, but how it stretches into business  Shar wants to make sure people are aware, so they can begin to think of solutions and little things they can do in their personal lives to help solve this problem in branding As designers and problem solvers, we can help figure out ways through what we're passionate about to help solve these world problems    We hope this conversation ignites inspiration -  make sure you check out Shar's agency website and connect with her on Instagram    Links mentioned Provoke Design Website    Episode 170 of The Design Business Show    Connect with Shar on Instagram  Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. In her extensive experience, she has worked with Fortune 500 companies, led design for Amazon rebrands like Amazon Fashion and Amazon Diversity, and helped more than 10 million Americans say "I'm with her" for Hillary Clinton. Here's what we covered on the episode: Shar's Background + Design School  How Shar initially reached out to me on Instagram and how we've stayed in contact ever since  As a child, Shar was creative but ended up going to school for neuroscience, where she received her bachelor's degree in psychology - she started her PhD program but quickly realized it wasn't what she wanted to be doing even though the work itself was valuable.  Shar explains that she changed paths to pursue an MBA instead and tried to get into marketing and advertising agencies for about a year with no success and says she felt very discouraged  Finally, an agency that Shar had sent her resume to reached out and asked her to do an internship with them - she accepted and worked in SEO and SEM but says that she was fascinated with the graphic design department there and realized that's what she wanted to be doing  Shar Shares that she went to Portfolio Center of Design and did a 2-year program and after moved to New York, where she began working in an ideation firm   We talk about how in high school, we didn't know there was this creative world that you could be part of where you didn't have to be considered a starving artist and how our country has been more accepting of creativity Shar recommends a TED Talk called, Do schools kill creativity? given by Ken Robinson  Getting Into the Design Industry How Shar found such strong differences between working in design houses vs. working in advertising and says she learned a lot from working in marketing and advertising but felt more comfortable working in design  Shar explains that it took her a couple of years to figure out her design identity and says she tried working in print, advertising, branding, packaging, etc.  How Shar was able to get into agencies to work in things like media buying, SEO, or social media but couldn't get into graphic design right away because she didn't have a portfolio even though the agencies agreed she had raw talent Shar shares why she thinks it's hard to break into graphic design work at agencies as a self-taught designer because they typically think that if this is your job, you should go to school to study your craft, and they want to rest assured that you have the training and knowledge needed to design because they take it seriously  Why we need to bridge the gap between people who took the traditional design route and the people who are self-taught designers or who just graduated from school When thinking about building a portfolio, Shar says it's important to figure out what you love doing first because you want your portfolio to be relevant to the work you want to be doing How you should focus on specializing to a certain extent instead of being a jack of all trades because once you master a certain area, if you want to pivot, people will believe in it, and you because you showed them you mastered something already Shar thinks people should perfect the craft they want to be good at and think about what kind of designer they want to be because everything takes a different route and gives the example of her best friend who also went to school at the same time as her, but took a different route into advertising   The story of how Shar worked very hard at school, which even meant sleeping there most nights because she lived an hour away - she shares that she was eating, sleeping, and breathing design to prove that her work was just as good as anyone else  Shar's advice to those listening is to think about what you want, how badly you want it, and where you want to go - and if people are not seeing it, you have to take a step back and say, is everyone picking on me or am I missing something?     The story of how Shar wasn't able to pay for her last year of school and had to move back home with her mom had no money to her name but launched an online store on Etsy store selling pop culture-focused phone cases that went viral and helped pay for her last year of school  Creating Your Portfolio + Provoke Design  If you want to build your portfolio, study your craft, and take on free projects if you need to - Shar shares that she took on some very low paying projects so she could master her craft  Shar says as a new designer; you shouldn't be so eager for money because you still need to understand the industry and learn but says, if you master your craft, you can charge whatever you want  When you're trying to learn, Shar recommends finding a small, local agency that puts out better work than your own and saying, hey, I want to learn, and if you have the capacity to teach me, great  Another piece of advice Shar gives is, be willing to intern for free so you can learn the skills you need, especially if you are self-taught; that way, they can be your teacher, and they can help you master your craft      Shar created Provoke Design because she saw an unmet need of the market - after working at a lot of different places, she noticed one consistent thing was that she was usually the only person of color and one of the only women, and also noticed the clients she worked with or the products they would put out lacked diversity When Shar worked for Hillary Clinton, Hillary was an advocate for change, and if you didn't see the change you wanted, she encouraged to do it yourself, so that's what Shar did - Shar didn't start Provoke Design because she wanted a design firm, she did it to start changing the design industry Shar says she works with all types of businesses but works to keep her business accessible to brands that can't afford to go to the best branding houses  For the first couple of years, Shar was the only full-time person, and she worked with other partners from writers and strategists to art directors and producers based on project budgets  Shar is currently working on the logistics of building an in-house team with the primary focus of staying accessible  Shar wants to remind you that regardless of your situation or circumstances, you can make a path for yourself - do what it takes to get there and don't be afraid to do the things that may be seen as unconventional  Connect with Shar through the Provoke website or follow them on Instagram     Links mentioned:   Provoke Design Website    TED Talk - Do schools kill creativity? Episode CreditsHosts: Rob Bates and Victoria GomelskyEditor: Olivia BrileyProducer and engineer: Natalie ChometPlugs: jckonline.com, @jckmagazine Show Recap Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and "Zoom-worthy" JewelryVictoria starts out by reporting on the passing of a beloved member of the jewelry industry, William "Lecil" Henderson of the Henderson Collection, and passes on her deepest condolences to his family and friends. Victoria and Rob then switch topics to talk about Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, and more holiday sales to come. Rob thinks the forecasts for retailers are pretty good this season, and he tells us why consumers looking for “Zoom-worthy” jewelry could help drive sales—if retailers put in the work. A Labor of LoveVictoria picks up the question of how retailers can improve their holiday season sales and says that this is certainly a labor-intensive season for store owners. Some states are still allowing backyard or garden showings, which are intimate jewelry showings that have the potential to be very successful. While wholesale may be down for people like Mark Patterson, a designer in SoCal who Victoria spoke to, his retail has more than doubled for 2020. Rob and Victoria both encourage people to shop local to keep small businesses afloat. Amazon, Luxury Jewelry, and e-CommerceVictoria brings up e-commerce in the luxury space, and how it has been really heating up lately. Amazon has been trying to ramp up its luxury offerings, especially luxury fashion. Amazon Fashion is going up against Farfetch—the online luxury platform in which Richemont and Alibaba have invested—and LVMH". In 2020, the online luxury market has gone from taking up just 12% of the luxury market  to 23%. Jewelers must have digital operations up to snuff. Gold in the Watch IndustryConversations around responsible gold sourcing have amped up because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Victoria recently wrote an article for the New York Times on responsible gold sourcing in the watch industry —which isn’t discussed as often as responsible sourcing in the rest of the jewelry industry. Despite growing consumer demand, Swiss watchmakers haven’t been more transparent about their gold sourcing, nor do they talk about where they get their raw materials from. Hushed PracticesRolex is a huge brand in the industry but won’t communicate about its sourcing practices. Rob discusses how recycled gold, while sounding good, may not be the best option either. Victoria and Rob end by giving resources for companies that want to start assessing their supply chain and sourcing their gold responsibly.
