Our David Lynch mini-season comes to a close with 2001's Hollywood nightmare, Mulholland Dr. Like Twin Peaks, Mulholland Dr started life as a pilot for an ABC TV series, but became a self-contained puzzle of a film when that pilot was rejected. The resulting movie is part-Cinderalla story, part noir throwback, and part artful commentary on the power dynamics and hidden spaces of the dream factory of Hollywood. What will Rob and Dave make of one of Nath's favourite films ever? A Haligonian ballerina has decided it's time for her to retire. Hannah Mae Cruddas has been dancing professionally with Ballet Jörgen for 13 years. She's danced in many productions, like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Cinderalla. But most might recognize her as the titular character of Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables: The Ballet. Mainstreet's Alex Guye spoke with Hannah Mae in a series of interviews, including one after her final performance.
It's mistress week and today we are talking rags to riches (kind of) in this Cinderalla story (that also includes like... so much adultery). The Katherine Swynford story. A poignant volume that introduces a new character to the lore and explores feelings around death and childhood. And it may come as no surprise that even a horror Shoujo manga somehow has to reference ballet, we all seen Black Swan right? Skip plot summaries @ 6:11 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 130: Petshop of Horrors vol. 5 By Akino Matsuri Translation by Tomoharu Iwo and James Lucas Jones Lettering by Nunu Ngien In the first chapter, ‘Dual' a congressman appears to D asking for the legendary Kirin. At first D denies the existence of such a creature deeming it as a myth, but in truth it is the Kirin who chooses the owner. The Kirin can make the dreams of its owner come true, granting them great power but at an extreme cost. In the end the Kirin chooses the congressman's aide/assistant and so he makes the greatest sacrifice. In ‘Day Nursery' we are introduced to Leon Orcot's little brother, named Christopher, a mute child who stays at the Petshop under D's care. It comes as a surprise when Christopher sees the pets as humanoids, the same as D and can converse with them telepathically. Christopher has survivor's guilt due to his mom dying from a complicated pregnancy and a feeling of being unloved from his brother Leon. Yet he finds a mother figure in the elderly black bird, Madame Sultana. On the day that Leon is injured he has a near death experience where he dreams of his mother who coincidentally looks like Sultana, or at least the way Christopher sees Sultana. In this realm both Leon and his mother talk about Christopher. On the same day Madame Sultana dies and D can sense the disturbance in the air. Soon enough Leon is apprehensive to be sending Christopher to a specialist school, his stoic nature hides it, but he gives his little brother a hug before he drops him off. Continued in ‘Darling' Christopher brings in a missing runaway Cat with emerald green eyes and a necklace for a collar, the cat feeling as if she is unloved and only valued for her necklace. The necklace being crown jewels and whomsoever wins the affection of the cat is owner of the jewels and in turn the next heir to the throne. With the cat choosing to stay with D she wishes for a life of a commoner and D trims her fur/ hair at her request, he then claims sovereignty due to possessing the necklace and holds the cat ransom. However, D's plan is to see if the rightful prince Saleem can recognise their cat. But like how a prince recognised Cinderalla, so does the prince recognise his cat. D sees how much the cat and the prince love each other and so he gives the necklace back. Christopher however gets his first taste of jealousy. The last chapter of this volume reads a lot like, Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. Jeanne Lecroix, jealous of not being able to play the lead role of Swan Lake spends the afternoon at D's pet shop. There he shows her many of his pets all performing for her, including a bloody cockfight. Through comparing the performance with her abilities, she feels inadequate. Therefore, D gifts her a blade, telling her that with it she will achieve her desire. Later D takes detective Leon to see Swan Lake and we find out that Jeanne has torn apart her rival's black swan costume, it is then decided that Jeanne will play the black swan and her rival Dominique will play the white swan. By the end of the second act Jeanne gets an ovation and it becomes clear that she is wanted for the third act, However Jeanne goes missing, having won the heart of her prince co-star she is never seen again after that performance. Context: · In Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake the role of both the black swan and the white swan is conventionally played by the same person. This is why in the chapter ‘Dance' Jeanne is jealous of Dominique since it is a dual character role. · Depending on the translation you are reading, the country that Saleem is prince of is either fictional or based on the country of Yemen. Historical, scientific, and cultural references: · A Kirin (Qilin) is based on Chinese mythology, often mistaken for a giraffe in eastern languages but can also be mistaken for a Shishi in the west, the mythical Chinese lion like dog. A Kirin is more like a deer mixed with a dragon in that it has hooves and antlers along with scales. If someone from the Ming dynasty saw a giraffe then they may have mistaken it for a Kirin. They even share the same name. · Madame Sultana is a Myna, which is a Starling bird native to India, it can talk like a parrot, even going for lower frequencies of speech than the average parrot. Although symbolically it is more representative of a crow in how it is a pomgeist or conduit for the deceased. · The Cat in the chapter ‘Darling' is named Pandora. It means “all giving” and “gifted” named from the Greek creationist myth. · The Dying Swan solo dance was created by Mikhail Fokine for Camille Saint-Saëns's ‘The Swan' for the Ballerina Anna Pavlova, having premiered in 1907 as a special occasion piece, It is inspired by the Alfred Tennyson poem of the same name and of course it would be adapted and used for future Swan Lake performances. In the words of Fokine's granddaughter, Isabelle: "The Dying Swan does not make enormous technical demands, but rather enormous artistic ones because every movement and every gesture should signify a different experience, which is emerging from someone who is attempting to escape death." · La Syphide is a dance original choreographed by Filipo Taglioni in 1833 but Sadly, the 1836 August Bournonville choreography is the only one to have survived, since Bournonville did not have the rights to the original music thus he created a new version of the dance. It is not to be confused with the 1909 ballet Les Sylphides, another ballet involving a mythical sylph. A Sylph being a spirit of the air. · “Pas de deux” is a ballet term for a dance duet. Literally translated from French as “Step of two” Facebook Instagram Twitter/X Official Website Email
"You, sir, are supposed to be charming." We watched "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" and we do NOT need to be rescued thank you very much! Drew Barrymore is having a bit of a career renaissance these days with her super charming, super viral (personal space anyone?) talk show, but we're taking it back with this one. Twenty Five Years to be exact! It was 1998 and Hollywood was still experiencing a contact high from Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and we wanted more retellings of the classics through a 90's lens! More young Hollywood It-Girls! More alternative rock songs in the trailer! But we'll be darned if this movie doesn't actually work. Drew is really giving it her all as Danielle, the soot-faced orphan doomed to live out her days serving her Wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters, but we need to talk about Anjelica Huston absolutely eating as The Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent - the Wicked Stepmother. Drew knew what a moment it would be for the Barrymore and Huston acting dynasties to be together for this one, so she called Anjelica herself begging her to take the role. And we as movie-goers are forever in her debt. We also get to see Melanie Lynskey (herself having a moment lately) in an early American film role and she's so adorable we can't even stand it. Listen, we all know the story of what could have been with Dougray Scott's (Prince Henry) career (google it) but in what could have been a thankless role, he really came to play and it shows he's having a good time. This movie is straight up fun - it's a Cinderalla story where historical Leonardo da Vinci plays the Fairy godmother. Honestly, work. Hello HWIDGicans, we have an important announcement to make today. There has been a recent change in leadership, as Elon Musk has acquired the majority of shares in our company. His ruthless coup of our Board of Directors was shameful, and we can only assume blackmail was involved. Some changes to be instated include: mandatory Tesla ownership per host, a switch over to Starlink for internet, and since Mr. Musk is African-American, Tab must now listen to the entirety of Kanye West's discography. We hope these changes won't impact you, the listener, too much and we will be in touch about how we're gonna spend all this money, yo.- Trojan Whiners- Being Babied- Netflix and Chill- USFLRemember 300? It's a great tale of men coming together to defend their country against all odds. They hold their defenses strong when thousands of Persians descend on them, they cut through "immortal" warriors, and shrug off volleys of millions of arrows. In the end, they go down fighting, but one soldier is able to tell their tale and rally the troops at home for another round. It's pretty much non-stop action. Because that's entertaining. What's not entertaining would be the sequel where we see all their wives grieving for two and a half hours. Because actions change things. People that whine about everything happening to them but take no action to change their fate are the opposite of the Spartans. Don't not be a Spartan.Babies suck. You've got to watch them 24/7 just so they don't kill themselves. Don't touch that hot stove. Don't put that fork in the electrical outlet. Don't create a resistance uprising leading to your assassination attempt. You know who's not a baby, and therefore doesn't need to be led by the hand at work? Me. And everyone else. Mostly. Look, there are some fellas working out there that really need guidance. The kind that don't understand why a male-to-male electrical cord is a bad idea, but in a work zone that mostly involves pushing boxes on wheels around? You can pretty much just point to a thing and point to where it needs to go, and it'll get done. No need to baby the guys doing it.Remember Netflix and Chill? Well, it's going away if Netflix's stock prices are any indication. "How'd they do that?" person who clearly hasn't used Netflix in years asks. Well person, remember when Netflix had movies you wanted to watch? Not anymore! It's Bollywood garbage and straight-to-digital Bruce Willis act 'em ups. Remember liking that Netflix Original Series? Well these days they make so many at such low standards, that's all they have! Remember paying ten bucks and splitting it with three other people? The CEO of Netflix wishes you would get cancer and die you filthy criminal! Netflix turned into the digital version of the Amazon Returns bargain stores that have cropped up recently. You wade through a bunch of garbage that you already have better versions of or can't fathom ever wanting in hopes of finding that one "Cinderalla" item you can take home, or you walk away dejected. Well great, now we have to think of another euphemism for casual sex. How about HBOMax & Chillax? Or Tubi & Boobie. Or Disney Plus & Cunnilingus. Or Crunchyroll & Punchy-hole.Remember what the XFL promised? A brand new football league that was tired of RULES and 5 HOUR GAMES, no they wanted X-TREME FOOTBALL to be the new norm. And believe you me, I wanted it too. In my mind I imagined spikes on shoulder pads, flaming goalposts, boost and jump pads, the ultimate football videogame that never was. But alas, it was just the NFL with slightly changed rules. So when I found out about the recently launched USFL I questioned why it exists. The XFL is coming back, and we know it'll be just as milquetoast as it was the first time around. And they want to be EXTREME! So this is just another league, with tiny differences in rulings so that football addicts can get another round in after the NFL finishes their season. All this and more on this week's fast and furious episode! Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of September 3, 2021. Labor Day Weekend is here and Marvel has one more blockbuster to wrap up the Summer season with ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.' The exciting and surprisingly beautiful film brings martial arts into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a fun and fantasy-driven way, now in theaters. On Netflix, the streaming service brings you Michael Keaton in ‘Worth,' an emotional and poignant tale surrounding the events of 9/11, and gets right to the point of asking, “What is life worth?” Over on Hulu, Steve Martin and Martin Short have teamed up again for a hilarious murder mystery tv series, this time adding a third to their comedic duo with (of all people) Selena Gomez. In ‘Only Murders in The Building' the unlikely group shines with an absurd premise, snappy writing, as well as a bit of MA content. Andy also dives into the upcoming fall lineup from Amazon's new and modern-ish version of ‘Cinderella' and the much anticipated 25th movie in the Bond film library. With so many great options at home and on the big screen, what film will audiences choose to unwind this long weekend? . Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Rags to riches tales have been an important part of storytelling since the beginning of time. This week, Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel talk about their favorite movies about sudden riches. They also talk about 'Hunter Hunter' and one of the craziest endings in years.Covid-19 has been in the news cycle all year. It was only a matter of time before movies about it starting coming out. While this has already begun, the guys talk about HBO Max's upcoming release and whether people are interested.Hollywood is constantly talking about how it is becoming more inclusive. This has been a case of "I'll believe it when I see it" for the most part. Surprisingly, there was a noticeable, if small, change in 2020.The guys also look at 'Hunter Hunter'. The IFC Midnight release is a survival horror that is story driven and very tense. It also has one of the most talkable endings in years. This week's main segment is rags to riches movies. Of course, there is Trading Places and Cinderalla, but Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel talk about why they are so popular. There is a discussion about how much audiences are willing to be preached to plus some good old fashioned rich people bashing.Adventures in Movies! is hosted by Nathaniel Muir, Blake, and Danny. Patrick Mahomes proved again why he is the best QB in the game as the Chiefs stopped the Cinderalla run of the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs defense made King Henry look like a pauper (2:18-9:40). The Green Bay Packers were out played, out manned and out coached. The Forty Niners knocked the Packers out with a right hook (DEFENSE) and a left hook (Raheem Mostert). The game was over before it began (9:42-15:27). The Chiefs will be crowned the champs in Superbowl LIV. When your QB is Patrick Mahomes your team has the advantage. Bryant "Smug" Huggins had a Cinderalla story run at the ELEAGUE finals that saw him make it all the way into the final bout with Tokido. After an impressive 3-0 reset by Smug, the cameras cut to a two minute break that sent the FGC social media world into a frenzy about how unfair this was to Smug and his momentum. Was it really the wrong call?
This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss Daniel Mallory Ortberg's new short story collection "Merry Spinster." The book reimagines classic fairy tales but with very dark twists. Then, inspired by "Merry Spinster" we move on to discuss other books inspired by fairy tales that we love. And as always, we close with recommendations: Peter recommends the video game "God of War." "It is just an incredibly well rought game in terms of basically everything. It feels great, it looks great, but I think what's captivated me most about it is how the story itself is such a mature standing for a character that had previously been an incarnation of greedy bloodbaths. I think it's symobolic of a lot of growth in the video game inudstry as a whole." (You can check out Mashable's review of the game here.) Martha recommends the 1997 version of Cinderalla featuring Brandy and Whitney Houston. "These are all legends and it's fantastic. It's the black Cinderella. It's perfect." She also recommends doing facemasks during your flights. "You put your facemask on and so that you wake up wherever you're landing, you feel fantastic and you look fantastic." MJ recommends the New York Times podcast Still Processing's episode about Beychella, Beyonce history-making Coachella performance. "They talk about Beychella in terms of pop culture, pop culture history, race. It's the smartest deconstruction and reading of what this performance is." Next week we are reading "The Rosary," an essay by Alexander Chee from his new collection How To Write An Autobiographical Novel. You can find it online here and we hope you'll join us in reading it.

The OKC Thunder have won 8 in a row and seem to have put it together on offense. Are they a threat in the Western conference? The Cavaliers are dead last in defensive rating. Are they likely to make the NBA finals? Not as constructed. What needs to happen? The Pacers are the team that if the NBA were March Madness would be called the Cinderalla team of all Cinderalla teams which seems appropriate given that Victor Oladipo is playing basketball in Indiana again. Traditionally, Native Americans have enjoyed telling myths about how various natural phenomena originated. And "naturally", the members of the Seneca Tribe (part of the Iroquois Confederation) were greatly impressed by Niagara Falls, as millions of visitors have been in more recent times. Niagara FallsThis week, we bring you our wacky version of the tale we call "Niagara", which is perhaps the best-known account of how this majestic landmark came to be. It's certainly more poetic than the scientific version of a huge glacier trucking through 10,000 years ago, and it also features an important theme about the hazards of greed and the importance of revering nature. Niagara apparently comes from a Seneca word, but nobody's certain which word or exactly what the name means -- our favorite version is "thundering water". Originally located about 7 miles north, near Lewiston, NY and Queensland, Ontario, Niagara Falls moved southward to its present location over the years due to erosion. (Yes, you read that right: these waterfalls are nomadic, just like us!) There are three waterfalls in all, although the smallest one, Bridal Veil, is the Cinderalla of the group, tucked behind an island where most people don't even see it. There's Horseshoe Falls, which is 173 feet high and 2600 feet wide, and American Falls, which is 70 feet tall and about 1100 feet wide. (American Falls was taller until 1954, when a massive rockslide deposited some enormous boulders at its base. Hmmm... it was sort of like the Native American story.) Fed by the 35-mile long Niagara River -- one of the few rivers on this continent to flow north -- Niagara Falls drops 100,000 cubic feet of water per second over the cliffs in peak season. We reminisce about our past visits to this splendid sight, including our first time during a very harsh winter, when the falls were surrounded by ice and snow. Maid of the MistAnd we talk about our excursion this time on a Maid of the Mist boat, one of the vessels that have been taking tourists out to the bottom of Horseshoe Falls since 1846. In 1960, one of these boats rescued a 7-year-old boy who was swept over the falls, the first person ever to survive such a fall without protective gear. Other foolhardy folk have made the plunge over the years in barrels, and some have survived -- one 63-year-old woman did so in 1901. One man survived the feat, spent 6 months in the hospital recovering, and later died from injuries sustained when he slipped on an orange peel in the street. On this podcast, we also discuss Zephyr's latest jaunt to North Carolina to perform with his band; and how in his absence mom and dad took a bicycle ride to Canada.Happy Listening!
