Bust Buy's Turnaround time really is a gift of wonders. Daniel shares an example of why he chose them over Amazon for a particular retail purchase. He was amazed! In and out in less than five minutes and he didn't even have to leave his car. The future truly is wonderful. People are so quick to blame Amazon for disrupting and ruining other industries. Best Buy said no, it's not Amazon's fault. It's ours. It's our lack of execution that's put us in this position. When they took ownership of their own shortcomings, they were able to innovate greatly, and you also kind of have COVID-19 to thank for that, too. Dominic is surprised we still have poor customer service issues in 2021. Some people just hate human beings. Dominic sat down with his wife at a cafe. They overheard the wait staff complaining about them for ordering only two things. Why are you here? Business Coaching with Dominic Monkhouse As a business coach, Dominic Monkhouse has worked with humble, curious CEOs and their leadership teams to scale up their organisations. He knows there is a connection between the professional development of the CEO, their leadership team and business performance. Dominic brings his own experience, expertise and a proven process. He's Not Just a Business Coach... It's been 4 years since Dominic came on the show. Since then, he's been up to a lot of new things. One of which is his new book with a very courageous title. The name of the book it  "F**k Plan B". Another way of looking at it would be "burning your boats" Dominic says. It forces people onwards when you have nowhere else to go. He finds that often, business owners are trying to hedge their bet, and when they do, people won't commit to anything. The book is really on the success he had when running a couple Tech businesses in the UK. It talks about the things that Dominic decided were important for the business and things they doubled down on and wouldn't compromise on. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/book-1.mp4 When Dom does work with clients as a business coach, he finds that the hardest thing to do is getting his clients to reduce the number of things they are trying to do. Reduce the number of customers they are trying to serve. Reduce the number of products they think there trying to take over the world with. The book was trying to put together some of the things that Dominic had found from his own experience that had worked and hopefully people find it helpful in some way. Being a Business Coach Usually if a CEO comes to Dominic for help, the first thing he will ask them is "what's on your mind?". They usually give him 3 things, all of which are completely irrelevant. Dom will usually get some sort of sense of what the client needs help with, often a sales and marketing challenge, particularly around generating new business. Many times, it's that they haven't got the culture they want or they're growing too fast and afraid the culture they do have will fall apart. Other issues people come to Dominic for are that they are running the biggest company they've ever run and they have an executive team which isn't really a team. Or, it has the potential to be a high-performing team but they don't know what to do to turn it into a high performing team. So often, people come to a business coach wondering where they should focus their time on. What should they be doing in the Next 100 days (no pun intended). You've got a problem, lets think about what you can do in The Next 100 Days to sort it out. It's a core period of time. Long enough to make a change and do something different, but short enough to achieve a result a replan with the next big thing. One thing Dominic thinks about is that everybody has a business plan. Everybody has an Excel spreadsheet all ready in their head. This will grow like this and that will grow like that. We get here earn billions, sell the company and move to the Bahamas. What they don't have is a business model. In this new episode of Scaling Up Insights, we have panelists, Ami Kassar, CEO of MultiFunding, and the author of The Growth Dilemma; Cheryl Biron, a Business Growth Coach in both Scaling Up and 3HAG methodologies; and Dominic Monkhouse, a Business Growth Architect. In December of 2020 alone, women accounted for 100% of the jobs lost. Women in the workforce are suffering and it doesn’t look like they’ll be returning to the job market anytime soon. Schools are too unpredictable and the people who can’t afford it are single moms. With so many women leaving the workforce, Bill is worried about the quality of perspectives and the impact it will have on innovation within companies. In addition to the male/female disparities, the pandemic has deeply impacted the lowest economic class a lot harder and those jobs haven’t come back yet. When it comes to coming back into work, people are getting emotional that they can finally shake hands with “strangers” and be in the same room with people. In Dominic’s experience, you get more of an impact when you’re in the same room with people, and he believes that’s probably true with most teams and most companies. Bill believes we’re headed for a hybrid model. Dominic is not so sure. Whenever he worked remotely for international teams, it was apparent he was a second-class citizen. It was an absolute pleasure to have, world-renowned business growth guru and author of best-selling books, The Rockefeller Habits and Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest Don't, at the Summit at Foundry Farm. He joined Dominic Monkhouse for a discussion of the latest trends he has noticed in scaling businesses and leadership teams. Verne's talk at the Summit feels very timely. It was recorded back when the sun was still shining in September and when a “second wave” was on the horizon. Since then, most of the UK has been back into some form of a lockdown or another. Verne's knowledge feels just as on point as ever, so we are ecstatic to be bringing his conversation with business leaders at the Summit to The Melting Pot. For obvious reasons, Verne was not able to make it to the farm back then, but – lucky for us – he was happy to beam in from Boulder, Colorado via Zoom. His intervention is littered with informed business examples from top companies, and full of realistic optimism. Leaders should build empowered, open-minded teams, looking to “plan for the worst but hope for the best”. Leaders should be able to position teams to look for opportunities to innovate, grow into, and make the best of changing spaces. Central to this is also the idea that the CEO needs to be constantly in touch with the leadership team. Sounds simple, but is so often understated, says Verne. He discusses the weekly communications used by the likes of business giants, Facebook, and the strategies used by his own team to keep track of the thought processes of the leadership. Having a central communication like his weekly newsletter, Where's Verne, is paramount for business leaders to keep the whole company on the same page. Building company culture through engagement, but also by allowing the CEO to process ideas outside of their own head.  Synchronous communication to never miss an opportunityFor Verne, staying in touch is a foundation that needs to carry over to your sales teams and customer communication. Communication has always been key. But, how often do you actually sit back and look at the amount of time your customers have of your attention? Verne argues that now is the perfect time to look at this process. He believes you should never allow a proposal to go out on an email, without a human there to help the prospect through. He has also found that companies land big contracts by never leaving customer queries to be answered by email. It's more beneficial for you, and more efficient in the long run to immediately organise a call.Improve your praise and facilitate learning One of the biggest mistakes leaders can make is blindly thanking a successful team. This is a huge missed opportunity, according to Verne. Instead, take advantage of the fact that people learn better, and appreciate praise more, when it comes from their peers. So, next time your team has a great success, or your new sales guy lands the deal, use what Verne describes as “the most powerful question I've learned as a leader: ‘That's fantastic… how did you do it?'” Have them explain in front of the team so they are listened to, and make sure you sit back and listen as well. Scaling up or forward to be well-positioned post-pandemic Leaders have to take advantage of all opportunities and make their own at this time. Verne says that now is the time to reach out to and make the most of your relationships. They need to make sure they are surrounded by the best customers and the best talent. Leaders need to actively assess their current positions to be able to make the most of their current situations.They should also be on the lookout for new opportunities; the strongest leaders will be thinking about where there might be “a new category you can pioneer coming out of this crisis?”, says Verne. You should be looking to emerge in the strongest way possible for Spring, by tightening up processes and getting prepared for growth. Even if you are not actively expanding as a business right now. Verne believes you should be taking steps to improve your overall standpoint,  constantly and inexpensively; “if your job as a company is to make the lives of others easy, your job as a leader is to make your employees lives and jobs easy”. You should always be searching for ways to improve even if that does not necessarily mean expanding or investing right now, you should still strive to scale forward.

Is your business model based around great customer service? If so, do you measure how good your service is, and whether it is improving? If not, then Net Promoter Score might be the tool that makes all the difference to your business. We chat with Dominic Monkhouse, who has used net promoter score to transform service delivery in a number of different organisations. Net Promoter Score Dominic lives near Salisbury and works with a company called Shirlaws Group, helps companies between £2 and £12m growth fund or exit. His background is IT services. He is a sales and marketer. His secret sauce in his career was staff engagement and customer experience, he has experience in: Hiring the best people; How do you keep the best people? How do you engage them? Then, how does that manifest itself to produce great customer experience? Then, how do they buy more stuff off you and tell everybody about you. Net Promoter Score with Dominic Monkhouse So what is Net Promoter Score or NPS? We should note that NPS now stands for NET PROMOTER SYSTEM – it's not all about the score. Net promoter score originates with a Fred Reichheld article in Harvard Business Review. https://hbr.org/2003/12/the-one-number-you-need-to-grow Net promoter score gives a very simple measure of customer satisfaction. ONE QUESTION: Would you recommend The Next 100 Days Podcast to a friend or colleague? This question is scored on a 1 -10 scale 9-10:                        are satisfied enough to recommend you. - these are promoters 7-8:                           are neutral, they won't act, they won't hurt you, but they won't recommend you. 6 and below            are detractors, they are likely to get away from you, and potentially are customer terrorists and may well tell everybody that you are rubbish. Add up the number of people who give you a 9 or 10, then take away those who gave you 6 and below. 7-8 are neutral. That gives you the NET PROMOTER SCORE NET PROMOTER SCORE =  # Promoters - # Detractors Ideally you are looking for a positive score. Most organisations will have a single digit net promoter score. A world class net promoter score will be is in the 80s. Ask a supplementary question: Why did you give that score? Once your customers have provided their score, you would follow them up and ask them WHY they gave that score today. This gives free text thinking help to understand how customers are thinking about your business. You can measure across touchpoints in an organisation. Finance team sending bills etc. CEO could have a relationship score. Its not just about the external customer, many teams serve internal customers so its a great way of measuring performance of e.g. an IT help desk. There is often a 10-20% difference between a transaction and relationship score. Is this an easy thing for someone to set up? At one level, it is simple. Send an email. Get replies. But Dom advises you to build a system around this. SAAS platforms are available. https://www.livechatinc.com/blog/what-is-net-promoter-score/ Transaction score of 4, you'd want to call and say that's terrible how can we alter what we do in future to get you to a 9? Tips and tricks. Make the first communication about NPS from you as the CEO. This is important to me. If at any time you have a problem, this is my email address, this is my telephone number – give me a call. (in 20 years, Dom has done that, and only 5 people called him out of hours). It's not a department thing. It's a company thing. After the results come in, send them feedback and tell them what you have done. So many surveys don't let people know the results of the survey. Net promoter score and driving more referrals Dom's experience is that 9s and 10s SPEND MORE MONEY. A 9 and 10, they ring them up and say who have you referred us to? I haven't, they'll give you a name or two and you have business development ammunition.
