From who gets an ICU bed to volunteering for a vaccine trial, ethics in the time of COVID is a complicated business. “Sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking that life is mostly ethically neutral unless we come across some catastrophe or other, or some really difficult moral choice. But when we look more closely - and this I think is what COVID has done - we realise that our values and our beliefs about the world, and what’s important, and who’s important, are making themselves present all the time.” Dan Fleming is the head of Ethics and Formation at St Vincent’s Health - so he’s been kept plenty busy this year. He speaks with Natasha about pandemic ethics - pandethics, if you will - including who gets prioritised when health resources are scarce, quality-adjusted life years, and what happens when a vaccine becomes available. Natasha also speaks with Ed O’Neill, an oncology researcher at Oxford University - who also put his hand up to be one of the first guinea pigs in the world for a COVID-19 vaccine trial. Both Ed and Dan draw on a particular ethical framework for the choices they’ve had to make in this pandemic year - one that conceives of people as made in the image of God, and centres on love of neighbour. “The neighbour to whom one is called first is the neighbour who's forgotten by everyone else. So today we might talk about priority populations, or poor and vulnerable groups. Different commentators use different language, so they might talk about the forgotten ones, or those who live on the underside … A unique feature of this framework is every person has the same value, objectively speaking. Every human person is enshrined in a special dignity. And that calls on us to think about, okay, well, in the context in which we find ourselves, whose dignity isn't being ensured? Whose dignity is not being served by our current context?”

Andrew Cohn is an Emmy-Award winning filmmaker, screenwriter, and founder of Seven34Films. His feature documentaries include Medora (executive-produced by Steve Buscemi and Stanley Tucci), and Warriors of Liberty City (executive-produced by Lebron James). His first narrative feature, The Last Shift, executive-produced by Alexander Payne and starring Richard Jenkins, Shane Paul McGuie, and Ed O’Neill, premiered at Sundance this year and was released in theaters on September 25. What you will learn: The importance of a good production designer, and why Adri Siriwatt was such an asset to The Last Shift; also the importance of letting a film speak for itself. [0:00-10:07] What first sparked Andrew’s interest in documentary films and why he focuses on the characters and the world they inhabit, as opposed to using those characters to make a pre-determined point. [10:07-20:20] How understanding characters in an authentic way was handled in the documentary Medora, and how Steve Buscemi and Stanley Tucci got involved. [20:20-29:03] How Andrew’s professional ambitions turned from teaching to filmmaking, and how he became a filmmaker without film school or formal education or training in film; also, what made him choose to move on from documentary films to writing and eventually directing a narrative film. [29:03-39:50] How a phone call from screenwriter, director, and producer Alexander Payne opened doors to working with an amazing cast and crew on his first feature film, The Last Shift. [39:50-48:06] How the controlled balance of comedy and drama and be a vehicle for finding truth in stories, and how Andrew was able to come in under budget by limiting the number of locations and characters in his screenplay for The Last shift. [48:06-56:30] Why he enjoys shooting films in Chicago, where he found the brilliant crew behind the new season of Fargo to help him film The Last Shift. Also, how Andrew chooses which festivals to enter after completing a film, and why film festivals are so important for filmmakers. Alright people, look, to quote Ed O'Neill from all those commercials, it's time for some straight talk. We're living in a scary world right now, I think it's safe to say. What with corona having shut everything down and there being a new world ending threat every month, it's safe to say that everyone could use a little levity. But wouldn't you know it, the subject/area that people need the most right now, is the area that has, to nobody's surprise, come under the most fire right now! Yes people, cancel culture is back in full swing, and here on Talkin' TV, we decided to break our no politics rule for this one episode, because it's safe to say that we, like many other people, love comedy, and hate to see so much of our favorite subject matter coming under fire. So we decided to talk about it and examine it from all angles. Are there actually people to blame? What is stand-up's role in the world? Do stand up comedians have better takes on current events than most news sources? Should information censorship exist in anyway? Do people actually care about these issues that are brought up or do they just want to be a part of something because it's cool? And can new comedies come in and actually make an impact in this swath of content? All of these questions, and more, are answered on this episode of Talkin' TV! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

What can Awkward do? Anonymous recently learned her neighbor is secretly into crossdressing and being dominated while doing housework. Now he wants Anonymous to be his Domme. He's so eager to come over and clean her house. The problem? She's not a Domme and not really into the whole thing. What the heck should she do? Lookin' 4 Love is desperate to know when will men stop sucking!? She's been hurt by so many men, including the men who seem less toxic and more self aware. Is she doomed? Are there ANY good men out there who aren't steeped in toxic masculinity? She's awesome and wants to find someone awesome to be with. And you know what? Lookin' 4 Love isn't wrong. Privilege is invisible to those who possess it, and it takes a lot of CONSTANT work and checking to begin to unpack it. There are men out there who are doing this work and doing it well, like Imran Siddiquee and his colleague Jonathan MacIntosh of "Pop Culture Detective". Also, Mike Domitrz of "Can I Kiss You?"  Finding rad dudes who are unpacking masculinity and speaking to other men about what they're finding is super important, and the good news there are more and more men doing this work. But hurt is inevitable in love and life, so it's not only about finding really rad men, but also building our own resilience in our own lives for being able to hold that hurt. The movie stars Ed O'Neill and Ethan Embry as two unlikely travelers trying to get home for Thanksgiving, and we somewhat unfavorably say that this is a combination of Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Home Alone. We're also talking Genesee Brewing Company's new Dark Session Lager, the Schwarzbier style. Approximate timeline 0:00-12:00 Intro12:00-20:00 Beer talk20:00-end Dutch

Join Scott and Hamish for an interesting look back at a very strange and short-lived TV show from the early 80s, the Star Wars themed sitcom "The Cantina". Listen as they discuss this odd and long forgotten series starring Billy Crystal as the struggling Mos Eisley cantina barkeep Blorp and his one employee, the clumsy, yet ambitious wolf man Grunchy, played by Tony Danza. They'll talk about the many factors that ultimately led to the show getting cancelled after three episodes: its poor props and makeup, its silly acting, and most of all, its frequent commercial breaks. With a decently famous cast, (along with guest stars like Ed O'Neill, Craig T. Nelson, and Sally Field) and the Star Wars mythos backing it up, how could a show like this possibly fail? Very easily, it turns out. So put down your lightsaber mop, grab a sugar glass mug of bantha milk and listen to whatever this thing is! 33 - Creating an Inbound Marketing Strategy Without Blowing Your Budget On Tools (May 17, 2017) Hubspot expert George B. Thomas, kicked off Wednesday’s Social Media Breakfast with a jam session, wowing the crowd with his beatboxing skills. George is also a self-described “inbound Jedi” at The Sales Lion. George dove right in asking the crowd about their knowledge of inbound and content marketing. He said in his work over the years, he’s found that there are two main problems people face when coming up with a plan – the buyer and budget. He illustrated his buyer point with a picture of actor Ed O’Neill, who played shoe guy Al Bundy on the hit show Married with Children. George then showed a picture of Zappos, an online shoe and clothing shop. George said Zappos changed the game and is now the shoe guy. “They made it so that you can buy them online, get them, try them and send them back. Things are changing. People are more than willing to get anything they need online,” he said. So how do you build your own inbound marketing machine? “There are many moving parts to an inbound machine. Social media, analytics, SEO, automation, content, lead conversion, lead nurturing. These are all the buzz words about things we should be doing to do a digital business right,” George said. George asked the crowd if they use WordPress for their websites and received an overwhelming response. He then discussed various tools to use with WordPress sites. Content, design and development Visual Composer – Page builder plugin for WordPress. Gives you a lot of functionality and allows you to set up your pages the way you want to set them up. Cost: $34 one-time fee George said once you get your website set up, you should be measuring everything that’s happening. Measure your website and consider these tools: Google Analytics MonsterInsights Slim Stat Analytics To drive people to your website, George said focus on keywords and keyword questions. Thinking about experiences with Google, Siri and Alexa, people simply ask them a question. George has started coaching his clients on using keyword questions. Increase website traffic consider these tools: Ahrefs Yoast Your website is looking good, you’re measuring results and you’re bringing people to the website because you’re using keywords. Now, how do you convert those people to leads? Convert web visitors to leads consider one of these tools: Mautic Inbound Now George said you have to make your site look good, measure everything and focus on the questions that people are asking. “We need to get them in a position where they convert and then we need to be able to segment those contacts and nurture them down the buyer’s journey into our sales and marketing funnel,” he said. “Go forth and become an inbound marketing hero and rock out the world!” To learn more about Social Media breakfast: www.SMBMad.org To learn more about George head to: www.

On a daily basis, Scott juggles these respective “right brain” and “left brain” professions and has even managed to combine both. Indeed, among his many active projects, Scott is writing a legal sitcom pilot for Double G Productions. A member of the Writers Guild America West, Scott won the 2007 Austin Film Festival Drama teleplay competition for his Grey’s Anatomy script, “Reality Bites” and his credits include three years on the Emmy Award winning Christopher Lowell Show, where he wrote comedy cold opens and other material for the interior design guru. Among Scott’s other credits are celebrity autobiographical endeavors with Fess Parker (Walt Disney’s Davy Crockett and TV’s Daniel Boone) and model and actress Amy Theismann (daughter of sports broadcaster and former NFL great Joe Theismann). In addition to his legal sitcom pilot, Scott is developing a comedy feature for a Paramount Pictures based production company and was recently invited to pitch to a top TV producer. Among his many activities, Scott is a board member of First Stage, a renowned non-profit theater group in Hollywood, which has staged some of his plays and attracts such prominent actors as Ed Asner, Estelle Harris and Ed O’Neill. Join Dr. Arlene as she uncovers how Scott manages to balance two demanding careers and how each has served the other.
