Ensuring that your leadership and staff are aware and familiar with what your organization is and wants to present to the market is the key to employer value proposition (EVP) development and execution.
What is an employer value proposition and do we even need it anymore? I challenge this. Not because of what it could be but because of how most organizations abuse it. In this blog post and podcast-episode I talk about why I went ahead and challenged the holy employer value proposition (EVP). ⏱17:14 mins

TechRecruit Podcast, host Stacey Broadwell discusses Workforce Planning & People Analytics with Dan George, former head of People Analytics for Bridgestone. While workforce planning and analytics has been around for more than 10 years, the ability to capture and store this data has changed dramatically. In this episode, Dan George discusses how People Analytics and Workforce Planning helps companies not waste valuable resources, time or money by being proactive, hiring continuously & aligning your data with Finance. First, Dan George urges companies to be proactive in hiring. Asking questions like, how many hires are needed, how many internal positions are needed and how does that align with finance. Build the Employer Value Proposition and make sure that overhead is in line with business goals. Second, hire continuously while understanding seasonality & time to hire. If it takes 45 -60 days to hire a Principal Software Engineer and over 50% of your workforce is comprised of that talent, you have got to be proactive in hiring. If you have 115 employees in March and add 25 more in May, after graduation, and then in December your workforce decreases to 90, you will need to hire grads in December also so that your workforce is back to full staff in January. By planning ahead, you will not waste money or valuable resources on staffing agencies or experience costly lulls in hiring. Third, align your data structure with the goals of the company. Data warehoused by your analytics and systems teams have a hierarchical structure that must be understood across the organization with respect to how it ties to the business. Data structures must be related to overhead, profit and loss or sales for analytics to tell the story. This enables analytics teams to communicate ROI, ROA or BE to stakeholders. And while we are on the subject. Make a case for break even vs. ROI. Dan George suggests that selling your executive board on "we saved over 600%" vs. developing a break even model is much easier for stakeholders to consume and approve the funds you need for your next project. Check out Dan George's talk at MidWest TechRecruit Sept 18th 2019 in Chicago on Organizational Network Analysis and social network analysis and how it is challenging the traditional "Hierarchical Organizational Chart". Marketing Study Lab Helping You Pass Marketing Qualifications
Employer Branding is probably one of those Marketing topic that can be forgotten about as we focus on the external and turning prospects into clients and customers, but it is integral to an organisations success. If not implemented correctly, if at all, it can actually hinder not only the progression and growth of a company financially but also diminish opportunities to attracted the best talent in the future. So who better to show us the path to successful Employer Branding than Kim Kunze, who had a dream to one day work for Siemens and you know what, she does, as part of the Employer Branding and Social Innovations team, but I’ll let Kim explain more of that wonderful insight into dreaming big! Takeaways - Every company uses employer brand regardless of if it being given the care and attention it clearly needs or not. It is everything and everywhere, both online and offline and some may say this is just another word for reputation, but it goes further than that and communicates the identity of the brand – its culture, values and beliefs. - Employer Value Proposition, EVP for short – is the terminology for who we are as an employer and what the we stands for – notice how I didn't use ‘the company’ there as listening to Kim it is obvious that a successful employer brand is more about the ‘we’ than the ‘company’, which considers the outside as well as inside perspective being - Attractive, true, credible, distinctive and sustainable, which then goes on to form the underlying messages of the communications strategy. But make sure that this EVP is resonating with your audience…. Unless you’ll end up with values attributed to one man…. Santa! - Kim explained that VR is being used to show what it is like to work for Siemens via their Siemens 360 degrees app (links are in the show notes). Now I know I’m not a huge fan of this technology… yet, this is a great interactive way of engaging with the next generation workforce and being at the forefront of such technology puts the Siemens brand in a different place or viewed differently than it would be if it wasn't using or at least trying new technologies. And using VR as well in such an inventive way by simply using it to highlight that Siemens is more than just ‘washing machines’ – it’s robots, the London Underground and space - sign me up!
