Australia is best known for its Shiraz. Big bold Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra. These are all from South Australia.We have talked about Western Australia (Margaret River) known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.Yarra Valley in Victoria is a cooler region known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.Tasmania is off the south Coast of Australia and is an island. This is a cooler region and produces sparkling wines, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.Riesling is normally dry and crisp and best known for coming from the Clare Valley and the Eden Valley. Barossa Valley: Famous for bold Shiraz.Coonawarra: Renowned for rich Cabernet Sauvignon.Margaret River: A key region for elegant Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc blends.Clare Valley: Known for world-class, dry Riesling.McLaren Vale: Produces excellent Grenache, Shiraz, and GSM blends.Yarra Valley: A cooler climate region well known for quality Pinot Noir. Tonight, we are tasting:2020 Koonunga Hill, Shiraz Cabernet. Penfolds Wines South Australia. The winery is one of the best known in Australia and was established in 1844. Deep purple color, sweet dark dense berries, chocolate. Medium acidity, full-bodied, 14.5% alcohol. Flavors of vanilla bean creaminess and warm spice. Dried rosemary and sage might give appearance of earthiness. I purchased at Costco for $8. I mostly saw this wine running around $11, but I did see an online clearance sale (at Fine Wine and Good Spirits) for $4.33 (it said $11.26 off). The wine comes from the South Australia, but is a multi-regional blend. 65% Shiraz and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.2020 Max's Shiraz Cabernet Penfolds. I purchased this wine at WineStyles for $17.00. Wine Enthusiast says aromas of blackberry jam, cherry cordial, pencil shavings and sweet vanilla bean-and-dark-chocolate oak influence. Rich, balanced acidity with tannins in the background. Could benefit from a few more years of aging. The wine scored a 92 from Wine Enthusiast. 70% Shiraz and 30% cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% alcohol.2021 Bin 28 Shiraz Penfolds. Purchased at Wall to Wall Wine for $30. Wine Enthusiast says dense, ripe and powerful with quite a bit of oak. Chocolate with dark fruit and pepper spice on the nose. Flavor is rich and luscious, muscular tannins support rather than overpowers. Could age for a few more years. The wine was scored a 93 from the Wine Enthusiast. The wine is aged in American Oak for 12 months. 14.5% alcohol.We both liked #2 Max's Shiraz/Cabernet the best, and we thought this was the best buy of the night. I also liked #3 Bin 28 Shiraz, a very powerful fruity-oaky wine. I felt it lost a little balance because of the amount of oak, Denise didn't care for it's finish. Neither of us really cared for #1 Koonunga Hill, Shiraz/Cabernet. Next week we are exploring white wines of Australia.

Tonight, we are tasting another new wine. It's Gruner Veltliner. Sometimes just referred to as Gruner. These wines have primary flavors of lemon, lime, grapefruit, and nectarine; followed by notes of white pepper, iris, green bean, radish, tarragon, ginger, and honey.The best Gruners are perfumed, dry, and full-bodied with high acidity. This is the number one wine grape in Austria. It can be made into a light fruity wine, a heavier bodied dry wine, and a sparkling sekt.Serve well chilled, near refrigerator temperature.We are tasting with a Riesling which I'm guessing will be fairly similar to the Gruner.Tonight, we are tasting:2024 Doris and Leopold Gruner Veltliner. Purchased at Trader Joe's for $5.99. Wine Enthusiast rated it an 88. Bright and lively, with zesty citrus, orchard fruit, white pepper spice, and a touch of macadamia on the finish. Clean and refreshing. 2025 Rieslingfreak No. 33 Reverence of Riesling. I purchased this wine from Costco for $14.99. It comes from Clare Valley, Australia. This winery has Rieslings that have scored upto 98. Fine Wine and Good Spirits called the wine highly perfumed bouquet of lemon thyme, lime, rosewater. This is a dry, fruity, and perfumed Riesling. The winery says it is made for immediate enjoyment. 10.5% alcohol.We both scored the Gruner a 3 and the Riesling a 4. We would highly recommend both of these wines.Next week we are exploring Australia.

I have to say that I can pick ém. My love of Bordeaux and the volume of Bordeaux I have tasted has lead me to Chateau Haut Bailly. Under the tootlidge of Veronique Sanders-Van Beek, the winery continues to make great strides not only in quality, but developing the experience of wine. You see, wine it not just a beverage, it has a soul, a connection, an expression of its place and of it's time. I have been fortunate enough to consider Veronique a friend and I look for opportunities to tell the story of the Chateau. Here I speak with Cyprien Chamanhet, Marketing Director of the Chateau. I have to tell you, having Cyprien Champanhet from Chateau Haut-Bailly in the studio was a real treat and just the sort of conversation that reminds me why I love hosting Wine Talks. We sat down in Southern California on a January day, and from the get-go, Cyprien brought an honest and unpretentious energy to the discussion—he cuts straight to the point. "Do you like the wine?" he asked, and it was refreshing to hear someone in the trade boil things down to pleasure and emotion, not just technical complexity. Even with fine wines, the fundamental goal is enjoyment. That's a sentiment I think too often gets lost in the shuffle in our industry, which can sometimes take itself a bit too seriously. We quickly dove into the DNA of Chateau Haut-Bailly. Cyprien is both Sales Director and Marketing Communications Director, but more than wearing official hats, he embodies what makes the estate special—the constant drive to improve, to question, and to never stand still. It's not that they have some rigid, well-documented strategy; it's woven into their identity. Every decision they make at the château pivots on the question: will this improve the wine, the hospitality, or the relationships with their partners? That's where the magic really happens, not just in boardrooms, but passing in the vineyards, talking among the team, and always with the Wilmers family, their deeply involved owners. Speaking of the Wilmers, Cyprien talked about Chris Wilmers, their chairman, and professor of ecology at UC Santa Cruz. Now, there's a boardroom influence that definitely filters down into the vines—and you see it in their approach to sustainability. It's much more than lip service. The château doesn't use weed killers or insect killers, maintains century-old vines, and considers not just organic or biodynamic approaches, but a kind of "third way" that balances environmental impact, carbon footprint, and even workers' and neighbors' health. I love seeing how that academic, ecological mindset brings practical, tangible benefits to the vineyard. It's a beautiful fusion of tradition and progress. We did some deep thinking around terroir—that mysterious, oft-referenced concept that supposedly starts and ends in soil. But as I prodded Cyprien, he agreed terroir extends into philosophy, history, and—yes—the boardroom. The energy and ethos of a place, its leadership, and the team all seep into the bottle. That's why I've never bought the idea of "bad vintages" at places like Haut-Bailly. As long as what's in the bottle is an honest expression of what nature and experience handed you that year, it brings emotion and memory—like a great piece of music with recurring themes and intriguing variations. One of my favorite moments came when Cyprien talked about how the industry tries to please the consumer—with supermarket formula wines versus character-driven bottles. He wasn't going to pander; at Haut-Bailly, the style is distinctive, loyal to its roots, and never sacrificed for fast trends. The real reward is in education and curiosity—getting people excited about differences in vintage, terroir, and story. And as we swapped stories about wine tourism, he lit up describing the new tasting room and the personal touch they offer visitors. Every guest becomes an ambassador, every experience becomes a memory, and suddenly, the conversation around the table at home is about what happened at the château, not just what's in the glass. I have to say, trading observations and anecdotes with Cyprien made me optimistic. We're in an industry built on pleasure, memory, and shared stories. This week the gang gathers up to talk about targeted content on social media and a new idea for a product to counteract one of the products that is frequently showing up on Sarcastro's feed in recent weeks.  They also tackle Fatty's adventure in going to Spirit Christmas which has just about exactly the merchandise they all expected it to have but without the absurdly named costumes.  This leads them to the idea of expanding the store to run all year with other holidays such as Presidents Day, Arbor Day and all the summer holidays which would just be horror themed Americana products.  Sarcastro takes Queen Sarcastro out for her birthday where she doesn't heed the advice of their server about not drinking the house wine and spending literraly a couple dollars more for a "better" red wine.  That triggered a memory of the days when the fellas used to drink Manischewitz wines and that prompts a suggestion by Sarcastro of having a Manischewitz wine bar at their upcoming annual Guys Weekend trip. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., the grandchild of Salvatore Ferragamo, the fashion designer and founder of the renowned Italian luxury fashion house known for its shoes and accessories since 1927, will be this year's special guest. Ferragamo's grandson owns part of the family wine company out of Tuscany, Il Borro, a super Tuscan wine producer, and Pinino, a Brunello wine producer. There will be a Ferragamo wine station open throughout the entire weekend of the festival, offering wine bottles and tastings. Ferragamo Jr. will attend the event briefly on Sunday afternoon. The two-day festival will feature over 30 wines from various regions in Italy, new Valley food vendors such as Luna by Giada and Elephante, along with returning favorites like Pomo Pizzeria, Mamma Lucy, Marcellino Ristorante and several others. Merchant vendors such as Outrageous Oils, Italian Harmony and Mamma Letizia will offer a selection of curated Italian products at the event. Additional items available include ceramic pottery from Lome, handcrafted apparel from Tea n Lace, jewelry, leather handbags and original artwork. This year, the festival will feature two stages with live entertainment along the waterfront. Programming includes cooking demonstrations from the festival's title sponsor, Greco & Sons, music performances by Ripalta Bufo, Sima and her All-Star Quartet, the Steve Ansel band and various street performers, including a group of 15 flag twirlers from Asti, Italy. Children can also enjoy face painting and balloon making at the event. The festival provides three ticket packages. The Salvatore Ferragamo Experience is available for $99.99 during the presale period from now until Tuesday, Sept. 30, offering one general admission ticket, six wine tasting tickets, four Ferragamo wine tasting tickets, as well as a wine glass and lanyard. After the presale, the price increases to $125 and does not include the wine glass or lanyard. The “La Strada del Vino” package consists of one general admission ticket, six wine tasting tickets, a wine glass and a lanyard, priced at $49.99 for presale and $65 at the regular rate. General admission tickets cost $15 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door. Children aged 12 and under receive free entry to the festival. The celebrations don't stop there. Ferragamo Jr. will also have an exclusive meet and greet experience on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of the Ferragamo store in Scottsdale Fashion Square, right next to the festival. For $150, guests can personally meet Ferragamo Jr. and select a bottle of either the highly rated Super Tuscan Il Borro or the Brunello di Montalcino from Pinino. Following the festival, Ferragamo Jr. will host an exclusive dinner on Monday, Oct. 27 at Virtu Honest Craft in Scottsdale. Limited to 50 guests, this event will feature a seven-course menu paired with wines from Il Borro and Pinino, offering attendees the opportunity to dine alongside Ferragamo Jr. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to the Italian Association in support of building a future Italian Culture Center. From his path—from Moët Hennessy in the U.S. to Hong Kong in 2008—offers a front-row view of the region's rise and recalibration.
