Howard Scott Warshaw returns to the program to talk a very serious topic: stalkers. Whether in the form of jilted exes who can't let go, deluded strangers who imagine a rapport, or vengeful online trolls, obsessed individuals can create havoc for a person's personal and professional lives, and can be highly unstable and dangerous. Howard discusses the psychological roots of stalking behavior, why certain people become objects of fixation, and what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones if confronted with such a person. Pick up Howard’s new book: Once Upon Atari: How I Made History by Killing an Industry About the Guest: Artist, technologist, creator and healer, Howard Scott Warshaw is first and foremost a communicator. Holding master’s degrees in Counseling Psychology and Computer Engineering, his career accomplishments include Video Game pioneer, MoMA artist, celebrated software developer, award winning film producer, author, educator and columnist. Former Atari game designer, documentarian and psychotherapist Howard Scott Warshaw returns to talk the lost year of 2020. While everyone was locked down in an attempt to prevent physical illness, mental illness has risen sharply during the quarantine. Agoraphobia, claustrophobia, domestic violence, depression, divorce...it's all gotten very, very ugly. But there is hope, and Howard is here to help to uncover the root of why we feel this way, how the pandemic has changed us in ways we haven't even realized, how to spot the signs of a downward turn in your friends or loved ones, and what to do if you're afraid they're in danger. Plus, Howard talks about his new memoir, Once Upon Atari: How I Made History by Killing an Industry, the story of how he came to be one of Atari's top young programmers, only for the video game crash of 1983 to send his career in a vastly different direction. At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education, we are passionate about promoting lifelong learning and professional development for dance educators. Our mission is embedded in challenging the dated teaching methods that no longer suit today's dancers and today's dance classes. We know teaching practices and methods need to progress along with dance research, curriculums, and dance programming. The good news is, is that we are not the only ones who are passionate about changing the norms. How we speak about dance, how we teach dance and how we represent ourselves contributes to the way our profession is perceived. With us today is the Assistant Professor of Dance at Southern Utah University Ms. Danielle Sheather. GUEST: Danielle Sheather completed a BFA in Dance and BA in Psychology from Honors College and received her MFA from the University of Arizona. She has received numerous awards some of which include the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant for the College of Fine Arts, the Creative Achievement Award and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award. Danielle has previously served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo and as Guest Artist and Instructor at East Carolina University Currently serving as Assistant Professor at Southern Utah University she is interested in exploring the neuromuscular/psychosomatic connections that exist between the mind and body in order to develop sound anatomical alignment, longevity, and injury prevention techniques. The “Silicon Valley Therapist”, Howard Scott Warshaw joined Tatiana and Lauren for a deep conversation about the ins and outs of psychotherapy, the psychological conditions of tech people, and how these crazy quarantine times are affecting all of us. Howard started out as a programmer, but after a wildly successful career in the video games industry, he started looking for something else. After trying his hand at art and filmmaking (also with spectacular results), he found psychotherapy as the perfect way to integrate all his skills and better help the people he used to entertain. He shared how it is possible to conduct sessions on Zoom, how he reconciles the brainy and the emotional aspects of himself and his clients, and all the right (and wrong) reasons for starting therapy. Tatiana then geared the conversation towards love and relationships, specifically among tech professionals. Turns out there are a number of common problems that these people face due to often being socially excluded in their early years. However successful they become as the new ruling class, they keep questioning their self-worth and have trouble connecting with people. Lauren was then wondering how COVID-19 is affecting people psychologically, which is something Howard had a lot to say about! The difficulty of creating connections drains everyone, but basic human emotions are not going to change. The trio ended the discussion by exploring why conspiracy theories are rampant today, and what possible solutions there could be to recreate the connections we feel are lost. About the Guest:Artist, technologist, creator and healer, Howard Scott Warshaw is first and foremost a communicator. Holding master's degrees in Counseling Psychology and Computer Engineering, his career accomplishments include Video Game pioneer, MoMA artist, celebrated software developer, award winning film producer, author, educator and columnist. Alan is highly regarded for his vital, re-imagined versions of classic plays and musicals. His work tends to mine the present-day relevance of a story, challenging people’s memories and expectations, so that they hear and experience the words and ideas anew. His style invites audiences to lean forward and participate rather than just observe, breaking down boundaries between audience and actors, encouraging hearts to flutter and conversation to ensue. His 10-person Oliver! was solicited by Stage Entertainment and had its inaugural production at the Human Race Theatre Company, with choreography by Spencer Liff. He worked in conjunction with the Lerner Estate on his post-modern and highly celebrated Camelot for the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago, where he also mounted a provocative, madcap, Vegas-themed Joseph…Dreamcoat and a rather progressive and highly stylized take on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.Alan has directed plays and musicals for Laguna Playhouse, Olney Theatre, Arkansas Repertory, Walnut Street Theatre, The New Theatre, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Virginia Musical Theatre, 3D Theatricals, Texas Shakespeare Festival, and the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport, among others. He has also directed many world-premieres, including The Little Hours (based on the short stories of Dorothy Parker), Exposure Time, and Multiple Family Dwelling for NJ Repertory, Mourning the Living at the Abingdon Theatre in NYC, and Death Valley: A Love Story for the Springfield Contemporary Theatre. He has been nominated for both the Joseph Jefferson Award and Carbonell Award, has received multiple Edgerton Foundation Grants for New Works, and has had his work recorded for the National Theatre Archive.Alan has directed original benefit performances on Broadway, for both the Actors Fund of America and the Christopher Reeve Foundation. He is a frequent Guest Artist at University Drama Programs throughout the country and is a Director and Teaching Artist for the Broadway Dreams Foundation.Based in NYC, Alan is a member of SDC and a Taurus.

The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) is temporarily closed to limit the spread of COVID-19. All previously scheduled classes, events, and programs are cancelled until further notice. However, the Museum has compiled a list of 10 Ways to Digitally Experience Glass, found here (https://visit.cmog.org/resources). Susie Silbert, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Glass at CMOG, discusses the enjoyment of taking a virtual museum tour, the fun of the Color Our Collections program, ways to discover what was hot in glass every year since 1979 by reviewing New Glass Review online, and the benefits for artists, collectors, galleries and glass lovers of remaining engaged with glass during these uncertain times by exploring CMOG’s virtual collection. Glass is all around us, working hard to enrich our lives. It’s so easy to look through glass, but we rarely pause to look at it. CMOG’s new live chat series, Connected by Glass, features experts and special guests who share their insights into a range of topics, allowing us to discover all the unexpected ways that we are connected by glass. Join CMOG at 1 p.m. EDT each Thursday on MS Teams as topics including glass used in science and innovation, entertainment, fashion, industry, design, and travel are discussed. Ask speakers questions via the chat feature. Each Connected by Glass episode will be uploaded to CMOG’s YouTube channel. Eric Goldschmidt, CMOG’s Properties of Glass Supervisor, will host the first episode of Connected by Glass. Airing May 7 at 1 p.m., the live chat will focus on fiber optics, a vital technology that’s enabling us all to stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. CMOG’s panel of experts includes: Dr. Marvin Bolt: Curator of Science & Technology, CMOG; Dr. Claudio Mazzali: Senior Vice President Technology, Optical Communications at Corning Incorporated; and Chris Schmidt: Executive Producer, PBS NOVA. They will discuss the topic and answer questions from the virtual audience. Lastly, Eric Meek, CMOG’s Manager of Hot Glass Programs, will discuss the Museum’s Watch with the Artist series, launching on its YouTube channel: https://www.cmog.org/press-release/corning-museum-glass-launches-online-watch-artist-series. Based on past demos from the Guest Artist program, the Watch with the Artist series gives viewers a new way to engage live with talented artists as they watch previously recorded demos together. Each Wednesday at 1 p.m. EDT, a featured artist will be active on the Museum’s YouTube channel, ready to chat, answer questions, and share stories with viewers about all things glassmaking. Guests so far have included William Gudenrath, Catherine Labonte’, Eusheen Goines, Kristina Logan and Jeff Mack. The Museum’s YouTube channel, which has 144K subscribers, is currently seeing more than 50,000 visitors per day and the average watch time has been 1 hour and 17 minutes. To access the Watch with the Artist series and many more pre-recorded glassmaking demonstrations, visit YouTube.com/corningmuseumofglass. Says Meek: “During this unprecedented moment when we may be physically distant, the Museum is proud to offer a new way for art lovers and artists to be socially together. It’s fascinating to watch an artist create, but it’s rare to actually interact with them while they’re working. The Watch with the Artist series allows direct conversations between artists and fans as everyone watches the process unfold together.” A glassmaker himself, Meek runs the Guest Artist program and was the featured artist during a soft launch of the Watch with the Artist series on April 1. “It was great fun,” Meek continued. “It was refreshing for all involved to spend two hours chatting about a material we all love. During a time when I physically can’t be in the Museum’s hot shop creating new work, this is the next best thing.” Meek also discusses CMOG’s new blog series, “Virtual Journeys into our Collection,” and his inaugural post: https://blog.cmog.org/2020/04/07/virtual-journeys-into-our-collection-thoughts-from-a-glassmaker/ This feature comes out every Tuesday, and staff members from across the institution share interesting stories about their favorite objects. For comfort and solace, the Museum also released a 3+-hour white noise “virtual fireplace” video that features in-progress pieces inside the reheating furnace! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g1i9FSZYWU

The Corning Museum of Glass is a proud collaborator on an exciting, new competition series, Blown Away—created by producers marblemediaand a co-production of Netflix andBlue Ant Media of Toronto. The 10-episode show, which will bring the art of glassblowing to a global audience through the Netflix streaming platform, will launch on July 12, 2019. The show follows a group of 10 highly skilled glassmakers from North America who have a limited time to fabricate beautiful works of art that are assessed by a panel of expert judges. One artist is eliminated in each 30-minute episode until a winner is announced in the 10th and final episode. YouTube star Nick Uhas, best known for his popular science show Nickipedia, hosts Blown Awayand renowned artist Katherine Gray serves as the “resident evaluator.” The series was filmed in the largest glassblowing studio ever built in North America, designed specifically for the scope and scale of the competition. The space allows 10 artists to work simultaneously, using two large glass-melting furnaces, 10 reheating furnaces and 10 individual work stations. The Craft and Design Glass Studio at Sheridan College in Toronto consulted on the studio design and aided the competitors for the first nine episodes. The Corning Museum of Glass, which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass, the library of record on glass, and one of the top glassmaking schools in the world, served as a key consulting partner on the series. Eric Meek, Senior Manager of Hot Glass Programs at CMoG also served as a “guest evaluator” for the series finale, helping to select the winner of the competition. The winner of Blown Awayis awarded the title of “Best in Blow” and a prize package valued at $60,000, which includes a week-long Guest Artist appearance at CMoG. The winner will complete two working sessions this summer, July 17-18 and August 28-29, in preparation for the “Blown AwayResidency,” October 14-18. During these times, the winner will participate in glassmaking demonstrations for the public in CMoG’s Amphitheater Hot Shop. This summer, CMoG is displaying the exhibit Blown Away:Glassblowing Comes to Netflix, which tells the story of how the Museum found its way into the global spotlight. Visitors can see work created on the show by each competitor, and watch a behind-the-scenes documentary with interviews conducted on the set and footage captured of the Museum’s Hot Glass Demo Team taking part in the finale. “The Corning Museum of Glass inspires people to see glass in a new light,” said Eric Meek. “Blown Away is a global platform, and it’s exciting to think about how this will broaden glassmaking’s level of exposure.” For a complete list of contestants and judges visiting talking our your glass.com, click on Season 4, click on Blown Away. Bronze Level: J&K Productions’ Website Program Notes: EAST WIND (l987) EAST WIND for solo flute was commissioned by the National Flute Association for its annual Young Artists Competition, and was first performed by the six semi-finalists at the l988 San Diego NFA Convention. The work’s opening motif is a slightly varied treatment of the simplest of ideas – a single note which is then encircled in a flourish-like gesture by its neighboring tones, consisting of a half step above and whole step below. It is this varied treatment, though, immediately conveying a hint of ecstasy and abandon, that imbues the motif with its distinctness and recognizable quality, maintained throughout the journey undertaken as the piece unfolds. EAST WIND’s central image -- from within its ornamented, inflected, winding, twisting, at times convoluted lines, a gentle melody gradually emerges... The work is dedicated to the memory of Karen Monson, a writer, critic and friend, who died in February 1988 at the age of 42, after the work was already fully composed. -Shulamit Ran
