Plenty to cover from T100 London, starting with Hayden Wilde's incredible win less than 100 days after a horrific bike crash and Lucy Charles-Barclay's brilliant performance that makes her a clear contender for the Ironman World Championships in Kona this October. We break down both the men's and women's races, with the women's race standing out as one of the best T100 events we have seen. Away from London, Alex Yee smashed a 5km road race, setting up an epic showdown the next time he races Hayden. We then preview Ironman Kalmar, where Chelsea Sodaro and Nikki Bartlett headline the women's race, and Ironman Copenhagen, which sees Joe Skipper going head-to-head with Rasmus Svenningson in what promises to be an exciting battle. In this powerful message, Pastor Alex explores what it means to live by God's holy standards versus man's standards. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 4:9-13 and the story of David's anointing in 1 Samuel 16, we discover why Christians are called to embrace "last place" in a world that prizes first place.Key Topics Covered:* Understanding the difference between holy standards and human standards* Why the apostles described themselves as being "displayed in last place"* The story of David's selection as king and what it teaches us about God's perspective* How to respond to persecution, criticism, and being dishonored for following Christ* The danger of judging leaders and others by external appearances* Living with the knowledge that "earth honors what heaven hates"* The power of communion and covenant communityScripture References:* 1 Corinthians 4:9-13* 1 Samuel 16:1-13* 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13* Psalm 5:5This message challenges believers to examine whether they are living by God's standards or trying to meet the world's expectations. Over 75 years after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that launched America's entry into the Second World War, one persistent question remains unanswered: "Did President Franklin D. Roosevelt have foreknowledge of the attack---and did he (and his senior military leadership) then withhold that knowledge from his overseas commanders in Hawaii?" Douglas P. Horne, a former Naval Officer who recently completed 40 years of combined military-and-civilian service to the Federal Government, deals directly with this most difficult of all questions about World War II, in the first major "Revisionist" work about Pearl Harbor written in the last decade. Contrary to recent assertions by mainstream historians that the Revisionist hypothesis is now dead, Horne finds it to be more robust than ever. In the first known work that studies FDR's foreign policy "on the road to Pearl Harbor" as a timeline, or chronology (which assesses numerous factors---including codebreaking, diplomacy, military strategy, the unfolding events in Europe, and the personality and words of FDR himself), the author compellingly presents his own unique findings regarding the longstanding allegation by Revisionists that FDR used the impending Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a "back door to war." Horne concludes there is, indeed, persuasive evidence that once FDR's undeclared naval war against Hitler in the north Atlantic failed to provide the desired casus belli (which would have allowed him to request a declaration of war against Nazi Germany), then consequently, permitting the Imperial Japanese Navy to attack Pearl Harbor---without providing any specific advance warning to the Hawaiian field commanders (i.e., allowing the Japanese to "fire the first shot" and commit "an overt act of war")---became the last, best chance for FDR to get a united America into the Second World War. FDR's overriding goal throughout 1940-41 was the imperative to get America involved, as a belligerent, in the war against Hitler's Germany, and the Japanese attack accomplished that goal, as Roosevelt knew it would. Both the timing of when FDR apparently received his foreknowledge of the impending attack, and the mechanism by which it was likely delivered, are thoroughly considered in this work. Author Douglas Horne also provides a critical assessment of the most recent Revisionist works, and using a new approach to the "big question" about Pearl Harbor, provides a bold new interpretation of events that will surprise most readers.https://amzn.to/4owLBL2Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Jerry Douglas is never not entertaining. On stage, on record, or in conversation, Flux, as Bela Fleck famously dubbed him, is full of wit, joy and inventiveness. His talents have garnered him 16 Grammy Awards, 28 IBMA Awards, 3 Country Music Association Awards, 3 Americana Music Association Awards, an NEA National Heritage Fellowship, and an artist residency at the Country Music Hall Of Fame and Museum. I heard once that his style playing Dobro was so popular that practically every other player emulated it, to the point that he had to reinvent his own style to distinguish himself from the rest of the pack. This story could very well be apocryphal, but it points to the fact that his influence is everywhere in bluegrass and bluegrass-adjacent acoustic music. And Jerry Douglas has stories. Ask him about anyone in bluegrass, or even a ton of artists outside the genre, and chances are that he knows them and can spin a yarn or two about playing with them or being in their orbit. Get him going, and he may even tell you about his ancestor David Douglas, of Douglas fir fame, and the spectacular and mysterious way he met his end in Hawaii. Here, we bring Jerry Douglas back to Southern Songs and Stories for a second time, following his 2021 episode “It's Always Roots Music 12 O'Clock With Jerry Douglas”. Since then, Jerry has been inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame; he has served as festival host and solo performer as well as in his tribute band The Earls Of Leicester for the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, with frequent guest appearances for a number of other artists and bands there; he also fell right back in with Alison Krauss & Union Station for their first album since 2011, Arcadia. Jerry Douglas will be the host once again at the Earl Scruggs Music Festival in late August 2025, where he will perform with the Earls of Leicester as well as Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and who knows how many artists as their on stage guest. Recently, he spoke with me on a video call while on tour with AKUS, where he gives us a preview of Scruggs Fest, plus he details a lot of what went into Arcadia. We also find out what he believes is the best key for playing bluegrass music, and learn how he approaches his instrument in Union Station differently than on his own. Jana Ireijo is an Hawaii born muralist whose passion as a conservation artist is born out of a love of art that started at a very young age. Jana creates vanishing murals using charcoal gathered from areas recently affected by wildfires. This material, formed by the heat of the flames, carries the story of destruction and renewal that is intrinsic to the natural world. She says her art is a reflection of the transience and impermanence of life and nature. Born in Honolulu in 1968, Jana has spent most of her life in transit leaving the island for California, before attending grad school in New York, then as a divorced woman to Connecticut where she raised her family, and finally returning to Hawai'i in 2023, where she has come full circle. Jana is the eldest of three children; she has a younger sister and brother. Her parents Rona August, a realtor, father James Ireijo, and step-father Joel August (both attorneys) encouraged Jana as a child to explore the arts, taking her to museums and galleries, and ensuring she always had access to arts and crafts. It was her mother that recognized a natural talent and told Jana she would become an artist. When the time came to choice her career pathway, Jana was drawn to advertising and after graduating from H. P. Baldwin High School (Maui) in 1986, she headed for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to earn a BFA in Graphic Design in1991. She then attended Pratt Institute, New York, where she earned an MFA Painting in 1999. Jana took ten years off from her art to raise a family before turning her hand to public murals and developing her own style. Now back in the islands as an empty nester, Jana has immersed herself in her passion for environmental issues, such as the ocean, deep sea mining, and helping her community. She is also working on her first book for children entitled Vanishing Moon. Here we go with another Tuesday. Some rain possible this morning…hopefully if it does rain, it'll dry out by the time I have to mow the lawn this afternoon. We started the show this morning with the latest news on the flooding in the Milwaukee area this past weekend, including Governor Evers declaring a state of emergency. Also in the news this morning, President Donald Trump is deploying the National Guard in the city of Washington to take over for the city's police department, a nationwide recall on a hand soap, Oktoberfest tickets are on-sale now, and a wild video of a passenger boat in Hawaii crashing into shore. In sports, the Brewers just won't stop winning, week 2 of the NFL preseason begins on Friday, the schedule & bracket for the Little League World Series is out, the College football AP Top 25 has Texas at the top, and the UFC is moving to Paramount! Elsewhere in sports, Skip Bayless reviews "Happy Gilmore 2", and the Vikings have a new male cheerleader this year and people on the internet are not happy. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and we also let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday. Plus, a late-night announcement from T-Swift! A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
We use the term Milky Way for that glowing arc across the sky. But how people picture it varies from culture to culture. In Sweden, that starry band goes by a name that means "Winter Street," and in Hawaii, a term for the Milky Way translates as "fish jumping in shadows." And: the history of naming rooms in a house. Some old houses have a room off the kitchen with only a sink and cabinets. It's not a kitchen, exactly -- but what's it called? Plus, the colorful flag of one European town features a visual pun on its name. It's a drawing of a hand holding a heart. All that, and head over teacups, humpty-twelve, lowdown, chockablock, overhaul, Desper't Ambrose, honyock, an imaginary boyfriend named Raoul, and so mad I could spit nickels. The White House has declared war on Latin American drug cartels. Although this seems like great news, has anyone stopped to ask if the goal is to shut down competition? Recent executive orders from May stripped regulations for domestic pharmaceutical production in the United States and attempted to create a direct-to-consumer purchasing program to subvert insurance companies. This is in a country that consumes more pharmaceutical drugs than any other on planet Earth. Likewise, the opioid crisis was created by the same industry. There are more bad actors than just the stereotypical south of the border drug cartels as we also learned with Iran-Contra. HHS secretary RFK Junior is furthermore being praised for cutting 22 mRNA programs and saving $500 million, yet few are catching the crucial details about his openly stated agenda to create a universal Covid and flu vaccine instead, or the coincidental nature of that amount of money being exactly the amount needed for the Stargate gene therapy program. Meanwhile, as we have seen recently with more genetically modified mosquitoes being dropped in Hawaii, the Chikungunya virus is supposedly spreading in China; and US media, while saying there is no threat, has blamed it on mosquitoes the same week that an active shooter roamed the streets near the CDC headquarters. The shooter took his vaccine and blamed it for why he got sick, creating a PR campaign backed by the pharmaceutical companies to call him an anti-vaxxer who had mental health issues. Something strange is brewing. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. From someone who once "couldn't even cook rice" to an innovative culinary force transforming Hawaiian ingredients, Chef Mari's story is a delicious journey of passion and perseverance. She reveals how exposure to diverse food cultures in Los Angeles sparked her culinary awakening before returning to Hawaii to study at KCC Culinary. What makes her approach unique is the scientific foundation beneath her creativity – with a master's degree in nutrition and dietetics, she brings deep understanding of food's impact on our bodies to every dish she creates.Breadfruit (ulu) emerges as the star in Chef Mari's culinary repertoire. "Ulu is literally my most favorite ingredient to work with," she explains, detailing how this versatile fruit functions beautifully in both sweet and savory applications. Her innovations are practical magic – transforming ulu into Alfredo sauce and gravy without traditional thickeners, creating poi churros that had her culinary students raving, and developing egg substitutes from traditional Hawaiian ingredients during the egg shortage. These creations showcase her gift for honoring cultural traditions while pushing culinary boundaries. The conversation explores Chef Mari's unexpected path to teaching culinary arts at Kaiser High School, where she commanded a classroom of 80+ students despite having no formal teaching certification. This experience crystallized her definition of what makes a chef: "a leader who inspires people in the kitchen." Now working as a chef consultant with the Culinary Institute of America while building her social media presence, her future vision centers on creating a non-profit cooking school accessible to everyone in her community. Throughout it all, she maintains that cooking is fundamentally about connection – whether through television appearances, Instagram videos shot entirely on her phone, or the dream of a community cooking space that celebrates local farmers and ingredients. Follow her continuing culinary adventures @BiteLogic on Instagram and TikTok, where science and flavor merge into something truly special.
If you are ever tempted to think that one person can't make a difference, think again. My colleague Cleo Paskal exemplifies what a single individual can do with determined and sustained effort. Cleo has long warned that the Chinese Communist Party is using insidious political warfare to undo hard-won and extremely costly World War II victories that liberated strategic Pacific islands west of Hawaii from the control of another totalitarian regime, imperial Japan. With help from Steve Bannon and other amplifiers, Clare Paskal is now getting high-level and popular attention, particularly with her argument that U.S. territories like Guam and the Northern Marianas constitute America's western border. Like the other frontiers President Trump has done so much to secure, it too must be protected from our most formidable enemy, ever: the CCP. With a Pacific summit looming, it's time for action, action, action. This is Frank Gaffney.
Today on The Conversation, we broadcast live from Fort Street Mall and explore plans to revitalize downtown Honolulu through the creation of a business improvement district.
