“Leaning into how we can fundamentally transform lives and make them better, has been something I've been personally passionate about,” CliftonLarsonAllen's strategic pursuits leader for manufacturing Jennifer Clement said about why she loves working with manufacturers. Clement and CLA New England Manufacturing Growth Network Leader Stephen Fuller joined the CBIA BizCast to highlight the company's work in this major industry sector. With 130 offices nationwide, including three in Connecticut, CLA provides accounting, tax, outsourcing, and assurance services for a variety of industries including manufacturing. “I explored different industries and just clung to manufacturing, probably because it was just cool,” Fuller said. “Seeing a tangible thing created, and seeing those things created in Connecticut just made it more special to me.” Fuller said that as a Connecticut native, he's passionate about seeing manufacturers in the state succeed. “This evolving industry within Connecticut has been there for a number of years, and that just means a lot,” he said. Fuller and Clement also shared their excitement with CLA's support of the Coolest Thing Made in Connecticut challenge. Starting with 16 things made by Connecticut manufacturers, companies will compete head-to-head with residents voting on their favorite products in each round. The CBIA Foundation is leading the initiative in partnership with the Connecticut Office of Manufacturing and CONNSTEP. “What a great way to promote what we do in Connecticut, not only for ourselves, but for the rest of the nation,” Fuller said. “I mean, there's some really, really cool stuff that we do.” Clement, who is based in CLA's Milwaukee office, said Wisconsin has had a similar competition for the past eight years. “It is a frenzy each year,” she said. “So far over the eight-year span, we've had over a million people voting for these products. Clement said manufacturers across the country and in Connecticut are all dealing with challenges including softening demand, labor, and inventory. She said they work with businesses to help shore up their bottom line. “We're seeing a renewed effort and emphasis on profitability,” she said. “And what can we do in the short term to look at our cost structure.” Fuller said there are a number of state programs available to help manufacturers with job retention and growth, training, and tax incentives surrounding R&D and capital investments. “I think it's more about educating the manufacturers about what is out there," he said. Fuller noted that when it comes to growing the manufacturing workforce, it's not just about recruiting, but also retaining workers. “There's this generational mind shift of what is important to this newer class of workers,” he said. “I think that's extremely important for manufacturers and companies across Connecticut to understand what makes them tick, and to work with them to develop programs that retain them.” Clement and Fuller said that many manufacturers are also looking to new technologies like AI to improve things like efficiency and predictive capabilities as well as attracting and retaining workers. “We've got to think about how we now transform the lives of especially the younger workforce,” Clement said. “Manufacturing is seeing the same thing.” “What we're starting to see is the understanding that it's time. It's time for that shift, and to have that investment in the future," Fuller addeed. Clement noted that their remarks are not intended to be legal, financial advice, or accounting advice. Actress Loretta Walsh (When Calls The Heart) returns to the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to discuss The Lifespan of a Fact, the based-on-real-life play that she's producing and starring in this month at Studio 16 in Vancouver. The Lifespan of a Fact tells the story of a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a prominent but sinking New York magazine, a talented writer with a transcendent essay about a high stakes event concerning a teenage boy, and a magazine editor-in-chief who needs to balance truth and art with the unsentimental realities of the magazine business. The Lifespan of a Fact is funny but, given how it holds up a mirror to our culture's current fascination with bending lies into “alternative facts,” it's also terrifyingly timely. As Emily the editor-in-chief, our dear Loretta shares the stage with longtime collaborator Ben Immanuel and Tal Shulman from So Help Me Todd, under the direction of renowned theatre artist Jennifer Clement. The Lifespan of a Fact runs May 2nd to the 12th at Studio 16, and the May 8 performance will feature a post-show Q & A with the cast, director, and special guests. And that's not all: Loretta can currently be seen in season 11 of Hallmark Channel's wildly popular When Calls the Heart, which kicked off its latest season on April 7. In this compelling and at times emotional interview, Loretta talks about The Lifespan of a Fact, how When Calls The Heart's Florence has changed since season one, acting opposite Hrothgar Mathews, and the ways that theatre can soothe a broken heart. My guest today has lived, well, a life like no other. The writer Jennifer Clement grew up in 1960s Mexico, at the tail end of the Mexican Golden Age, next door to the former home and extended family of seminal artist Frida Kahlo. As a teenager she moved to New York, where she inhabited the artistic downtown world of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. She was - and still is - a magnet for the creative and surreal. But Mexico had her heart. Since returning to Mexico City, she has written many books, including the cult classic Widow Basquiat and Prayers for the Stolen which became an award-winning Netflix film. Jennifer was also the first and only woman president of the writers human rights organisation PEN International in its 100+ year history. In her memoir, The Promised Party, Jennifer looks back at an extraordinary youth spent with artists and revolutionaries, and examines the way it shaped her.Jennifer joined me from her home in Mexico City to talk about playing in Frida Kahlo's bathtub and why Kahlo's art speaks to so many women, why so much women's art is still sidelined, and how she developed a passion ethic not a work ethic. We also discussed rebellion, running away, the power of girlfriends, how acting on dreams can change your life and why her mother has been taking HRT for 50 (yes five oh) yearsIf you loved this episode, you might also like my conversations with Isabel Allende and Esther Freud.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Promised Party by Jennifer Clemenet and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Join the author of “The Promise Party: Kahlo, Basquiat & Me”, the read at the top of the charts in the UK for 2024. Move into the writing world of Clement's poetic prose and lingering metaphors, a universe of layers and dimensions in pure motion. Listen to her talk about how the act of writing and someone reading at the other end can become a mystical experience and how her famous novels “Gun Love”, a New York Times Editor's Choice book, and “Prayers for the Stolen” became the turning point of her calling to become an activist for the sake of Freedom of Speech. World acclaimed poet Jennifer Clement, the only woman to be elected President Emerita of PEN International, since this celebrated international writer's organization was founded in London back in 1921, is a fascinating author whose books have been translated into 35 languages. Hers is an intensive universe, a connective point between the brutal, the beautiful and the infinite.

Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat are huge names from the world of art, but what must it have been like to hang out and grow up in their worlds? Author and poet Jennifer Clement knows all about it and has written about her fascinating life in new book, Promised Party: Kahlo, Basquiat & Me.In the memoir, Jennifer writes about her upbringing in a bohemian community in 1960s and 70s Mexico City, before moving to New York City as a dancer in the late 70s, and living through the counterculture scene of the 1980s. She chats to tocayo Jen, about her experiences, story-telling, posthumous fame, and the work she's undertaken as PEN International's ONLY woman president, to make sure women's voices are heard, and celebrated.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Name: Sára Reading: Widow Basquiat, Jennifer Clement Why did you want to read this? This is one of my all-time favourite books. It travels well and doesn't age. It was given to me by a musician friend. The atmosphere and the people in the book have a loud pulse that doesn't fade. I love that Clement uses prose to write a memoir so close to the skin. It is also an excellent book to read to someone on a romantic stroll through a cemetery with famous graves - true story. How did you record yourself? I recorded it first thing in the morning when my speech tends to be at its calmest. I sat by the window overlooking the garden and a school, finishing just before the mayhem of recess erupted in the background.

And being a woman is a deadly mistake here. Girls mascaraed as boys to evade would-be kidnappers. Their friends are buried in the ground alive by their mothers, and dead bodies pop-up like flowers, blooming in a land where drug lords are the earth. In this place, one girl must hide the lies of her family while relying on her mother, neighbors, and her own self-determination if she hopes ever to breathe again the air of freedom. The girl: Ladydi Garcia Martínez. The novel: Prayers for the Stolen. LET'S GET LIT!...

Rachel Kushner’s much-anticipated follow-up novel to the dazzlingly successful The Flamethrowers is The Mars Room, a fearless and brutally honest portrayal of Romy, a woman starting a double life sentence in a US correctional facility, leaving her young son with her mother. In this event, filmed live at the 2018 Edinburgh International Book Festival, we welcome Kushner back to Scotland to discuss her latest book (which has subsequently been shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize) with American-Mexican novelist and human rights activist Jennifer Clement.

‘She disappeared, she never came back, men came for her; today she would be celebrating her sixteenth birthday’. These were some of the heartbreaking statements that Jennifer Clement heard when researching her novel,Prayers for the Stolen, about the plight of missing girls in Mexico. The war between the Mexican government and the drug cartels has killed more than a hundred thousand people. This does not include the missing women – those stolen from their streets or their houses because they are young, poor and pretty, or those hiding from the violence. Join the author as she shares the stories she heard over ten years of immersing herself in the lives of Mexican women, including rural mothers who dig holes in their cornfields to hide their daughters from traffickers. Have the drug wars become a war against women?
