This episode covers three narrated articles written for Volume 22, Issue 3 – Summer 2021 and Volume 22, Issue 4 – Fall 2021 of DDW. The articles are called “The benefits of bioinformatics in genomics sequencing” and “LIMs vs ELNs – what does your lab need?”, for which Part I and Part II were published separately across DDW issues. Dr Bongcho Kim is the new CEO of Macrogen Europe, a Netherlands-based provider of genomic sequencing services. Dr Kim's appointment comes at a time of sustained growth for the company, which is benefitting from the rapidly expanding sequencing market. In the first article, he talks to Lu Rahman and explains the important role of bioinformatics in genomics. The second and third article are in two parts. Researchers often ask whether a LIMS or an ELN is right for them. In this two-part series, Barry Bunin, PhD, CEO at Collaborative Drug Discovery, offers a guide to understanding what a LIMS is, and how it differs from other scientific data management systems.
Advanced computer science expertise with the ability to code and a medical degree with over 20 years of clinical experience is a rare combination. This episode's guest, Martin Weihrauch MD, the co-founder of Smart in Media incorporates this rare combination. His digital pathology platform originated when he was asked by a pharmaceutical company to provide some interactive entertainment for the participants of a medical congress, something beyond just coffee, and the only thing really attracting participants to a company exhibition booth. He decided to host diagnostic quizzes with virtual microscopy. Since then, supported by the close collaboration of a pathologist, Dr. Alberto Peréz Bouza, the platform evolved from the initial virtual microscopy application, through a full pathology educational platform to a fully capable digital pathology diagnostic platform with an open API and the capability for AI algorithm integration. Smart in Media is a digital pathology platform designed by physicians for physicians. The software is optimized for pathology workflow and IT infrastructure. Through the open API, it can communicate with any LIS or LIMS system, has the capability of image analysis algorithm integration, and is extremely user-friendly. Smart in Media users can give real-time feedback to the platform developers about any bugs or difficulties in a user WhatsApp group. Smart in Media is already a leading digital pathology solution provider in Europe with its presence established in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the UK, and the Czech Republic, and is the official digital pathology provider of the European Society of Pathology. With its presence expanding to the US the company is striving to bring digital pathology to every pathologist and to improve and speed up their workflow. To learn more about Smart in Media visit their website here.

Implementing digital pathology into clinical practice is a big endeavor and a decision not taken lightly by pathology laboratories. Today’s guest, Dr. Ralf Huss, the chairman of Visiopharm’s advisory board explains:· what the biggest benefits of going digital are· how to start · and why pathologists will be forced to accept the digital transformation. Currently, the two greatest benefits of digital pathology which can be taken advantage of by every pathology practice are · telepathology, enabling access to remote experts, · and the ability to deal with complex biomarkers which can be tackled by image analysis and supported by access to experts and reference centers. New biomarkers are being detected by very complex assays and digital pathology, especially its image analysis component, gives pathologists the ability to standardize the reading and reporting of such assays, which directly benefits the patients. This reduces the inter-and intra-pathologist variability and translates into consistent treatment decisions and quantitative data. The biomarker assessment is especially complicated in the field of immune-oncology and in this field image analysis is often the go-to evaluation method. Going digital in a pathology lab can be a complex and daunting process. When starting the digital pathology journey, there are no “low hanging fruits” and the decision where to start depends on the needs and the availability of tools in each lab. The journey however should always start with a detailed plan and clear definition of goals and supporting action items.Regarding digital pathology hardware and software, the market is saturated with great standalone products, but the key to helping labs go digital is to provide tools that are interoperable and can be immediately plugged into a functioning pathology workflow. All hospitals and pathology laboratories already use a lab information management system (LIMS) and have a functioning IT infrastructure as well as other tools that are there to stay. The new tools need to have an open interface and be interoperable with the old ones. Only this approach will grant the vendors success.Even though the tools for digitalization of pathology have been available already for over two decades, only few institutions went fully digital and the lack of interoperability of the new and old pathology systems plays a major role in slowing down the digitalization process. For most institutions going “fully digital”, defined as the entire workflow having accessible digital information attached to its every step, will not be immediately possible. The transition will happen slowly, as an evolution rather than a revolution and the interoperability of digital pathology systems with the rest of laboratory equipment and infrastructure will play an important role in deciding whether to go digital soon. For now, some labs can decide to stay analog and still thrive, however, in the long run, the advances in medicine themselves will force pathologists to go digital. As the disease biomarkers get more and more complex, pathologists will require more and more help from image analysis and advanced analytic tools. However, to be truly helpful, these tools need to be user-friendly, robust, and standardized. Visiopharm is striving to provide such tools and with its image analysis solutions, the company is aspiring to be a part of an integrated pathology workflow and support pathologists where they currently are.
On this third and final episode of the LIMS, I talk about Robert Moses and how he contributed to maintaining racism through infrastructure.

Celebrate the anniversary of the Hash It Out Podcast with a personal update from founder and host, Micayla Harland! I give first hand insight into where I've been, what I've been doing (spoiler: cooking up a tiny human), and what's next for Hash It Out Productions. After the brief intro, Hannah O’Brien of Confident Cannabis sits down with me to discuss the company mission to bring transparency to cannabis test results in the latest Hash It Out episode. We chat about how Confident Cannabis’ model of connecting cannabis businesses based on accessible, accountable information helps transform the consumers purchasing decisions; as well as, our personal relationships to the plant. How industry professionals and consumers can positively impact cannabis’ future is a large part of our discussion this episode. We also chat about the progress and pitfalls of cannabis laboratories and how consumers can navigate test results more confidently. Some topics covered in this episode… The services Confident Cannabis provides such as Lab Integrated Management Systems or LIMS and Connect, a visual representation of chemical data paired with strain names and regions. How the Confident Cannabis wholesale marketplace based on lab generated test results makes sales easier for producers, processors, and retailers. ODA Hemp production as a point of entry to the cannabis industry. How does it differ from OLCC licensed production? What freedoms and frustrations might come with it from a data driven perspective. The long way cannabis laboratories have come, the legislative and practical obstacles that still lay ahead, and the way this affects the consumer experience. About Hannah Hannah O’Brien is Operations Manager for Confident Cannabis. Hannah is responsible for supporting labs and their clients with the onboarding process, implementation and integration of METRC and state tracking systems. She has experience leading teams at several high-growth technology companies, including operations for the peer-to-peer marketplace Shift. Prior to beginning a career in technology, Hannah travelled the world in an awesome way, earning her language teaching certification through Cambridge and teaching English abroad in France and Korea. Hannah holds a Bachelor’s in Political Science and French from Colorado University at Boulder. She’s an avid hiker who loves experiencing the peaks of high mountains in new places. About Confident Cannabis Founded on instilling trust and transparency in the marketplace, Confident Cannabis empowers all verticals in the supply chain—and ultimately consumers—to know what is made, who makes it, and what it’s made of in real-time. It’s the only place where cannabis producers, processors, wholesalers and retailers showcase and discover products from verified businesses with test results directly from licensed labs. http://www.confidentcannabis.com About the podcast Hash It Out is here as a resource for consumers who take an interest in the future of the cannabis industry. We are currently at a crossroads where it is more important than ever to make informed decisions about which companies to support with our hard earned dollars. In a landscape where quality is no longer a distinguishing factor, how do we as consumers decided who’s products to buy? Hash It Out is a series of conversations that dig into the bigger questions around how a business is effecting the future of cannabis, what values they model, and why they do what they do.

Putting yourself in another's shoes – or ski-boots — is an age-old tenant. But it would be truly hard to imagine being twenty-one years old and thrust into the biathlon world spotlight. At least year's Olympics in PyeongChang, Swedish biathlete Sabastian Samuelsson literally arrived on the scene in his canary yellow race suit — he won a silver in the pursuit and gold as a member of Sweden's men's relay team. During his post-race press conferences, his condor was appreciated as was his down to earth vibe. The medals, the massive media attention, the desire for his limited time were all new pathways for a young person to navigate. In this Nordic Nation podcast, we spoke with Samuelsson on February 8 to learn about his life since PyeongChang. Sebastian Samuelsson of Sweden celebrating silver in the men's 12.5 k pursuit at his first Olympics on Monday in PyeongChang, South Korea. It was also his first non-relay podium at the World Cup/World Championships level. (Photo: IBU/Biathlonworld) Beyond being one of the most recognizable faces in Sweden, Samuelsson has become an outspoken critic of WADA's Compliance Review Committee (CRC) and its Executive Committee (EX CO). This past January, after RUSADA missed the Dec. 31 deadline for handing over the Moscow Lab's LIMS data and any underlying data, Samuelsson penned an open letter to the CRC's head, Jonathan Taylor. (Despite missing the deadline, the CRC recommended to the EX CO to maintain RUSADA's compliant status. The EX CO voted not to penalize RUSADA for missing the deadline.) You can read Samuelsson's initial letter here. Taylor and Samuelsson then began an open letter dialogue to argue and counter-argue the main issue of re-declaring RUSADA as non-compliant. (Here's Taylor's initial response. Here's Samuelsson's reply. Here's Taylor's second response.) As the anti-doping movement matures in this post-Sochi era, one thing is clear: Samuelsson has found his voice. You can follow Samuelsson on Twitter to hear his political voice, and on Instagram to catch the Samuelsson day in a life.
This week we talk of creativity, inspiration and divergent thinking thanks to Sir Ken Robinson - who I saw speak at the LIMS show on education day, then we put Rich Hilton on the spot with a legacy question from Dan Austin who wants to know whats the difference between Peak Limiting and Compression and how do you use it? Then the Korg Nano series controllers and we're done.
