In this week's episode of The Bible for Normal People, Jared continues his tour through the history of modern biblical scholarship, exploring five (or six) more “aha moments” that transformed how scholars understand the Bible. From Rudolf Bultmann's challenge to interpret ancient texts in a modern world and the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, to new insights about editorial shaping, literary criticism, and the role of readers themselves, he traces how scholarship increasingly revealed the Bible as a dynamic, evolving tradition. Along the way, Jared highlights the rise of feminist, liberationist, and postmodern approaches, as well as the New Perspective on Paul, showing how fresh historical evidence and diverse voices have reshaped long-held assumptions about scripture, interpretation, and faith. Together, these developments invite listeners to approach the Bible with greater historical awareness, intellectual humility, and curiosity about the communities that produced, preserved, and continue to interpret these sacred texts. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“You and all of your new perspective nowWish I could shut it in a closetAnd drag you back down.”~Noah Kahan, “New Perspective” “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), British scholar, writer, and Christian apologist, in “Is Theology Poetry?” “All those who are ‘in the Messiah' are covered, shielded, protected, like the Israelites sheltering under the blood of the Passover lamb. That's Romans 3. They are declared to be Abraham's true family, Romans 4. They are therefore the true humanity, Romans 5. And they set off on their journey through the Red Sea as newly-freed slaves, as in Romans 6; they find themselves at Mount Sinai in Romans 7, only to discover in Romans 8 that what the law could not do God has done in his Son and by his Spirit, and they are on the way home through the wilderness to their promised inheritance. This is the new Exodus.”~N.T. Wright, New Testament scholar and Anglican bishop “Here again [in Romans 8:15], it seems that Paul is describing the situation of his Christian readers in Rome by using exodus metaphors. They should not be afraid and desire to return to ‘the house of slavery,' as did the Israelites in the desert. … Instead, they should continue to recognize the leading of the Spirit of God, which confirms their status as ‘sons,' causes them to cry to God as Father, and shows the way to freedom.”~Richard B. Hays, New Testament scholar, in “Pneumatology: The Spirit in Romans 8” “When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, ‘Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: “Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians”? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.' And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord.'”~Exodus 14:10-13 (ESV)SERMON PASSAGE Romans 8:1-17 (ESV)Romans 8 (ESV) 1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.1 Corinthians 10 (NIV) 1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea…. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Exodus 16 (NIV) 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” Numbers 13 (NIV) 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” Exodus 14 (ESV)11 They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord”

Episode Synopsis:Season Five of the Blessed Hope Podcast is underway. I know that for many of you, the Book of Romans is your favorite letter in all the New Testament. When we wrapped up our time in 2 Corinthians a couple of months ago, the clock started on launching Season Five. I love Romans, I've preached through it twice using the lectio continua style of exposition, and I have lectured on parts of Romans on a number of other occasions. So I am very excited about season five, and I've worked very hard to get this verse by verse deep dive Bible study ready to go.There can be little doubt that Paul's letter to the church in Rome is one of the most important letters ever written. As we will discuss in this episode, the Epistle to the Romans has had a tremendous impact upon the course and history of Western Civilization, as well as a huge impact upon the people of God ever since it was written. For reasons we will address momentarily, the Book of Romans has a clarity and power about it which brings Reformation and renewal to Christ's church whenever it is proclaimed from the pulpit and studied by the people of God. We open Season Five with two episodes devoted to the importance and historical background of the epistle. In this first episode we'll take a look at the ways in which this letter has impacted the world in which we live, and we'll consider some of the key figures in church history and their testimonies about the influence which Romans has had upon them and their ministries. The influence of Paul's letter to the church in Rome is truly remarkable. That done, we'll briefly look at some of the main themes of the letter. What ground does Paul seek to cover in this letter to a church in the very capital of a pagan empire? Why did the renewed interest in Romans some 500 years ago generate many of the controversies which led to the Protestant Reformation and the split from the Roman Catholic church? Why does Romans still generate controversies, such as those associated with the New Perspective on Paul? What about those doctrines long associated with confessional Reformed theology? Can we find them in Romans? So, in addition to the themes laid out by Paul in this letter, I'll identify some of the main controversies we will address when we get into the meat of the letter. I'll also explain my operating assumptions as we open a new season–why am I approaching this letter from an exegetical, theological, historical, and confessional perspective? For show notes and other recommended materials located at the Riddleblog as mentioned during the Blessed Hope Podcast, click here: https://www.kimriddlebarger.com/
Clay interviews Craig Fehrman, the author of an important new book on Lewis and Clark, This Vast Enterprise: A New History of Lewis and Clark. Fehrman approaches the great story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by viewing it through the eyes of the often-overlooked participants: Sergeant John Ordway, Clark's enslaved valet York, and Sacagawea. Rigorously researched and grounded in actual historical discoveries, this book will be essential reading for students of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In his footnotes, Fehrman begins with a truly remarkable short essay on his methods and historiography. These essays, which amount to 40,000 words, are alone proof that his work needs to be taken seriously. And he's great fun to interview. This episode was recorded on April 9, 2026.

Last October while attending the American Literature Association fiction symposium in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I managed to sequester two live, dyed-in-the-wool employed philosophers who also happen to be Cormac McCarthy experts. My AV guy (which is me) thought to handle the situation in some arm chairs near an elevator using a very expensive microphone rig ($28 at least) which attached to my phone. So--the sound is challenging, but I hope that listeners will forge ahead to this excellent conversation. Returning to the podcast is Dr. Rick Elmore, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Appalachian State University and Senior Managing Editor of book reviews at Symposium. He researches and teaches in the areas of twentieth-century French philosophy, critical theory, animal philosophy, and Cormac McCarthy Studies. He is the co-editor of The Biopolitics of Punishment: Derrida and Foucault (Northwestern University Press), The Evolving Project of Cormac McCarthy (LSU) and, published after this recording, New Perspectives on Cormac McCarthy: Encountering The Passenger and Stella Maris (U. South Carolina Press). His articles and essays have appeared in Politics & Policy, Symplokē, Symposium, Mississippi Quarterly, and The Cormac McCarthy Journal, among others. Joining him is his good friend Dr. Vern Cisney, the chair and associate professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Gettysburg College, where he teaches at the intersections of philosophy, religion, film, literature, politics, and popular culture. “Send Coach John a message”I was listening to my friend John O'Leary's podcast today - his Monday Moments - and it was all about having new perspectives. I hope you want to check it out - find it HERE. The new perspectives come from lessons from the four astronauts that recently came back to earth from the Artemis II mission. John goes through some awesome and powerful lessons from this incredible trip to space. These lessons can encourage us in so many ways to remind us of how special being alive is really something to connect with. This ties into recent conversations with John O'Leary and guests from his monthly online zoom session that he had yesterday. Check out his entire website so you too can get connected to not only his great content, but also - Click HERE. Also there are connections to my chat I had with my former student Abel Sanchez - that chat will be coming out this coming Sunday. But our chat had a lot to do with how amazing life can be and things to connect with making it better. Great stuff all around us my friends. Just connect with it and pull what you need to make your life just a bit better. Thanks for listening. This episode explores an alternative framework for understanding cancer biology. William Supple shares the story that led him to investigate antiparasitic drugs, particularly fenbendazole, after witnessing a remarkable recovery in a family member. He explains the similarities between parasites and cancer cells, the mechanisms behind antiparasitic drugs, and why such approaches remain outside mainstream oncology. The discussion also touches on systemic issues in medical research, global health disparities, and the role of inflammation and environmental factors in chronic disease. ◉

Send us Fan MailLate Autism Diagnoses, Music, and Seeing Family Through a New Lens with Liam Edward Golder Host Tony Mantor welcomes listeners to Why Not Me: Embracing Autism and Mental Health Worldwide and interviews Liam Edward Golder, a London-born music PR professional and songwriter now living in New York. Liam shares discovering his own autism later in life after his father was diagnosed around age 70, and describes how late clarity brought relief, acceptance, and a new understanding of his father's withdrawal and difficulty reading emotions. He discusses traits such as overwhelm with menus, sensitivity to crowds, loud noise and bright lights, hyperfocus on music, photographic memory, and co-occurring ADHD and anxiety, reframing autism as a creative strength that supported a 30-year music career working with many artists. Liam also describes helping translate situations for his father, who also has paranoid personality disorder, and shares his goal of inspiring others that autism doesn't have to limit achievement. 01:18 Meet Liam Golder 02:12 Creativity as Strength 03:36 Dad's Late Diagnosis 04:15 Shared Traits and Triggers 05:37 Rethinking Autism 06:49 Getting Diagnosed and Relief 07:41 Telling Family and Support 08:49 Translating for Dad 13:13 Burnout and Anxiety 14:35 Acceptance and Purpose 17:34 Music Career and Structure 19:17 Legacy and Inspiration 20:28 Connection with Dad 23:07 Living Confidently Now 23:52 Closing and Call to Share The content on Why Not Me: Embracing Autism amd Mental Health Worldwide, including discussions on mental health, autism, and related topics, is provided for informational and entertainment purposes only. What happens when you come home from war… but your mind doesn't? Sean Martin didn't just serve in the military, he went searching for meaning, purpose, and truth at the highest level. What he found came with a cost. After his service, he was left navigating PTSD, disillusionment, and a reality that no longer felt like home. This conversation goes beyond the surface of "life after service." It explores what it actually feels like to carry those experiences, the internal battles that follow, and the long road back to clarity. Sean shares how he moved from self-medication and breakdown to self-awareness and intentional healing, not by avoiding the pain, but by confronting it head-on. Today, he channels that journey into music, using his project The Quarantined to express what many people can't put into words: trauma, anger, truth, and ultimately, growth. Guest Bio Sean Martin is the creative force behind The Quarantined, a grunge/punk/metal project known for blending aggressive sound with socially conscious themes around trauma, addiction, politics, and modern life. After early success in Southern California's live music scene and international recognition for releases like Point the Finger and Antiquate Hate, Sean expanded the project into a solo-driven vision, leading to the 2025 album Aversion to Normalcy, which has accumulated over 900,000 streams on Spotify. A U.S. Army Airborne Infantry veteran and Musicians Institute–trained artist, Sean brings lived experience into his music, with a strong focus on mental health awareness, particularly for veterans navigating life after service. You'll hear About Why Sean chose the military and what he was really searching for The unseen cost of service and life after combat How PTSD impacts identity, perception, and everyday life The turning point that shifted him toward real healing How music became a tool for expression, processing, and purposeh Chapters 00:00 Welcome and Introduction 02:00 Why Sean Chose the Military 07:00 Searching for Purpose and Identity 11:30 The Reality of Service vs Expectations 15:00 Life After the Military and PTSD 19:30 Self-Medication and Hitting a Breaking Point 23:00 The Psych Ward and a New Perspective 27:00 Facing the Root Cause of Trauma 31:00 Rebuilding Identity and Emotional Awareness 35:00 Tools for Healing and Self-Regulation 39:00 Translating Experience Into Music 42:30 Building an Independent Creative Path 45:30 Perspective, Gratitude, and Moving Forward Chuck's Challenge This week, take a moment to pause and examine your perspective. Don't interpret God's silence as Him being absent, apathetic, or angry. This is the story of John the Baptist doubting that Jesus was Who He said He was. Text: Matthew 4:12-13, 11:1-6 Speaker: Aaron Patton
We naturally hate and want to hide our weaknesses. Jesus gives us permission to be weak by allowing Himself to experience our naked weakness on the cross.Homily for Palm/Passion Sunday March 29, 2026
This week we are rewatching the Taylor Swift ‘Miss Americana' documentary with a new perspective. 5 years ago Netflix released a documentary during the Lover era where we got to see Taylor Swift go through moments of creating the reputation and Lover album, as well as discuss her relationship with Joe Alwyn, her eating disorder, the need to make a better album, her political stance and more. We always loved this documentary, but watching it 5 years later with hindsight and a clearer understanding of what was actually going on in Taylor's life at this time, it was a lot more revealing and eye opening.Don't forget to subscribe so you can listen and learn more about the Lover era every week on the best Taylor Swift podcast.SPONSORS:Get Out Pass (TTNPODCAST) // https://www.getoutpass.comJust Ingredients 10% (TTN10): https://just.crrnt.app/Vjw9vgNxTaylor Swift Podcast || Best Taylor Swift Podcast || Taylor Swift Miss Americana Documentary || Taylor Swift Lover Era || Taylor Swift Lover AlbumSend us Fan MailSupport the showFollow along to hear a new Taylor Swift related episode every single Tuesday.Watch our episodes on YouTube!Follow Us On Social Media:Typical Tuesday Night Podcast @typicaltuesdaynight.podcastKarli @everyday_ellisJess @jess.taitJoin our Patreon for bonus episodes and exclusive Taylor Swift group chat!Shop Our Merch!Feel free to contact us at typicaltuesdaynightpodcast@gmail.com
