Is your “healthy” breakfast secretly the reason you feel tired, bloated, or foggy by 10am? In this episode, Jen Smiley breaks down the hidden truth about oatmeal—from its effects on your blood sugar and gut health to the anti-nutrients and pesticides lurking inside. Plus, she shares easy clean swaps to satisfy your cravings without sacrificing your health.  Key Takeaways: ✅ Oatmeal spikes blood sugar like ice cream—causing energy crashes and cravings.✅ It contains phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that blocks mineral absorption.✅ Most oat-based products are contaminated with glyphosate, a toxic pesticide.✅ “Non-GMO oats” is a marketing myth—there's no such thing as GMO oats.✅ Bloating? Fatigue? Leaky gut? Oats may be the silent culprit.✅ Clean swaps: Use nut milk pulp (like almond or macadamia) or try Wella grain-free oatmeal for the same texture without the toxins.✅ Make your own anti-inflammatory nut milk at home—Jen shares how!✅ Use the Read the Labels app to scan foods and spot hidden toxins.Disclaimer:The content provided by Wake Up and Read the Labels and Jen Smiley is for informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. Episode #89 Grains and Legumes Decoded – Friend or FoeThere is emerging evidence that the Standard American Diet, which is low in fiber and high in sugar and unhealthy fats, may initiate this process. In any case, staying away from an overabundance of grains and processed foods will help heal and maintain a healthy gut. This episode examines many studies in the area of grain consumption and chronic inflammation in our bodies, and examines both sides of the story about whether or not grains and legumes are good for us.Gluten intolerance is examined, as well as the concept called "Grainflammation" that plays a part in all of this. Lectins, Phytic Acid, and Leaky Gut are all explained and explored. I talk about how just cutting down these foods because of their carbohydrate load will help you get out of diet prison and help you to get some footing with intuitive eating where the amount glucose produced by these foods does not constantly bathe your system to trigger cravings and urges to eat. Links to all the studies mentioned in this episode are in the transcript accompanying this episode.Get all my free guidesTake a look at three great new coursesJoin me on FacebookFollow me on InstagramCheck out PinterestAnd don't forget my book!

What's in oatmeal that could harm your teeth, gut, and digestion—and what can be done to neutralize these risks?   Oatmeal offers a string of health benefits, such as potentially lowering cholesterol and bile acids in the blood. But there is a “dark side” to oatmeal that gets less coverage than its perks.   Nearly a century ago, a study on tooth decay compared the teeth of children who cut oatmeal from their diets to those who continued eating it. The results showed stark differences in their dental health.   While some studies suggest oatmeal has a relatively low impact on blood sugar, this may only be in comparison to a blood-sugar elevator: white bread.   Why should those with irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and arthritis be particularly wary of oatmeal?   What simple ingredient can be added to oatmeal to neutralize its harmful phytic acid?   On VitalSigns, host Brendon Fallon contrasts the wholesome and hidden dark side of oatmeal.   ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

In this week's video, I'm talking about phytic acid. If you have been around the paleo community or keto community for the last 20 years, you have probably been schooled on the horror of consuming phytic acid-rich foods. What is phytic acid anyways? Phytic acid is essentially the storage form of phosphorus in the plant. Phytic acid is found in abundance in grains, seeds, legumes, and nuts. I would also recommend sprouting, soaking, fermenting, or cooking your grains, nuts, seeds, potatoes, beans to increase their digestibility but I wouldn't stress about completely clearing phytic acid from your meal. Sprouting alone has shown to increase bioavailability of minerals in many grains from 40-98% depending on the grain. When might you want to pay special attention to the amount of phytic acid you're consuming? If you're a vegan or vegetarian If you're eating a lot of soy products If you're anemic If you're getting sick all of the time If you're not getting enough zinc So, if you are concerned about iron, calcium or zinc you could always eat foods or supplements at another time during the day and in so doing bypass the phytic acid issue.   ___ Want to know what some of the food staples are for me and my family? If you missed episode 22 : Misleading Diet Fads, I'd recommend checking that episode out first! This is a continuation following up on the information I shared in that episode, and further investigating the mechanisms of the diets and foods I spoke about. In this episode, I mainly discuss the misleading information about vegan diets and "Detox cleanses," both of which are heavily promoted in today's diet cultures, and both of which carry potential dangers and false claims. I wanted to use the best medical sources I could find to present this information, and investigate things like polyphenols (source of antioxidants), Phytic acid, oxalates, and more.Support the show

Dr. Berg’s Healthy Keto and Intermittent Fasting Podcast

In this podcast, I explain about phytic acid and phytates. They've gotten a bad rap as an anti-nutrient, which is a myth. In fact, phytic acid is a very powerful antioxidant found in nuts, seeds, and the fiber around rice, grains, and beans along with some vegetables. It's there to protect the seed from growing. • Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course! • How to Bulletproof your Immune System Course • Dr. Berg's Beginner Guide to Healthy Keto & Intermittent Fasting Plan • Intermittent Fasting Basics for Beginners • Dr. Berg's Healthy Ketogenic Diet Basics: Step 1: https://youtu.be/vMZfyEy_jpI Step 2: https://youtu.be/mBqpaAKtnXE Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. Episode 37 - Are Plants Toxic?

Get Lean Eat Clean

Plants don't want to be eaten because plants can't run away from predators the same way animals can, they protect themselves by producing toxic chemicals and compounds. Looking back, we know our predecessors ate some plant foods but they were eaten as survival foods. Also, indigenous groups would prepare plant foods to help render them less toxic - like fermentation. One of the most common plant anti-nutrients are lectins - which are sticky proteins that attach to other foods molecules and cause inflammation. Lectins can be found in sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts, beans, legumes, grains (wheat, barley, and oats) and nightshade vegetables. You want to limit your consumption of these foods because they are pro-inflammatory and could damage your gut and trigger your immune system. Oxalates are another chemical found in plants which could cause formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones. High oxalate foods are turmeric powder, kale, spinach, almonds, beet powder and chocolate. You might want to not do a green spinach smoothie everyday. I would recommend using a pressure cooker when preparing beans, and potatoes. Soak nuts, peel and deseed eggplant, and squash and ferment other veggies. Phytic Acid is another compound found in nuts, grains and legumes. Eating a diet high in phytic acid could contribute to anemia, zinc deficiency, magnesium deficiency and hypocalcemia. Plants vary in their toxicity levels for individuals Least toxic: Avocadoes, berries, squash, cucumbers, apples, oranges, olives, honey, dates And Most toxic: Beans, Legumes, leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, nightshades, nuts, seeds, grains, coffee and mushrooms I hope this opens your mind regarding plants and how they could be causing inflammation and gut issues for some people. In this podcast, I explain what phytic acid is along with its significant health benefits. Another name for phytic acid is IP6 or vitamin B8. It forms a storage system for phosphorus in plants, bran, seeds, nuts, and grains. You've probably heard that fiber is good for you; well, it's the IP6 that is the part of fiber which is good for you. Phytic acid binds with calcium, iron, and other minerals to regulate them and prevent them from building up to toxic levels in your body. It's a strong anti-cancer compound and the most potent antioxidant on the planet. Here's what makes phytic acid such a strong anti-cancer compound. With cancer, one of the first things that happen is the destruction of your mitochondria. Iron and copper combine with oxygen to produce severe oxidation in your body, destroying the wall of the mitochondria. But phytic acid makes iron and copper unreactive; in other words, they don't create oxidation. Avoid taking vitamin C with phytic acid, because it will reduce its effects. As well, don't take phytic acid if you're anemic or low in iron. Sadly, though, most people have too much iron and calcium. Phytic acid is an excellent way to counter and neutralize the oxidative effect of metals in your body. We talk more in-depth about the food sources and potential harmful effects of specific antinutrients such as Phytic Acid, Lectins, Goitrogens, and Oxalates. We discuss how to prepare foods high in antinutrients to reduce digestive issues. We give you tips on how to adjust your diet if you are particularly sensitive to one of these antinutrients, as well as how to determine whether you do have a sensitivity. We give options for those who have high sensitivities to many antinutrients, such as using certain diets -- like autoimmune paleo and elemental -- as stepping stones to rebalance. There are hidden reasons why people have these nutritional deficiencies despite taking vitamins. Nutrients are the help factors that help chemistry work well through the body by the formation of body tissue and the body chemicals to allow these chemical processes to occur, protect against diseases, and protect cells against damage. 1. Low Stomach Acid (Stomach) – Not having enough hydrochloric acid will give a hard time absorption of minerals and trace minerals. 2. Low Bile (Gallbladder) – The gallbladder is not working or is missing, you wouldn't be able to get the sufficient fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E, K), essential fatty acids, DHA, and Omega 3 fatty acids. 3. Low Enzymes (Pancreas) – The pancreas produces most of the enzymes in the body. 4. SIBO or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth – microbes are growing in the place where it shouldn't be, the microbes then will eat up all the nutrients. 5. Decrease Flora (Friendly Bacteria called the microbiome) – by taking antibiotic or being exposed to glyphosate in GMO foods that kills of the microbes and without the flora, it wouldn't recycle the bile. 6. Raw Vegetables/Nuts/Seeds 7. Insulin Resistance 8. Non-food based vitamins 9.
