Acts 11.22-23 NLT 'When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this evidence of God's blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.' When the church leaders in Jerusalem heard about the rapid growth of the church in Antioch they had lots of questions. Because the church in Jerusalem was strongly Jewish in character there were some who were deeply suspicious of what was going on in Antioch. Their concern was that the followers of Jesus should follow the Old Testament law. Others were excited to hear the news but wanted to know exactly what was going on so they sent a representative and their choice was a crucial one. They needed to choose someone who would be able to understand the non-Jewish background of most of the new converts in Antioch and who could give them plenty of encouragement. They made a very good choice when they selected Barnabas. Barnabas came from Cyprus. He had a much wider understanding of the world than the leaders in Jerusalem who had probably never set foot outside Judaea. More importantly, he was a man who was famous for his gift of encouragement. When we first meet Barnabas in Acts 4.36-37, Luke notes that his name means Son of Encouragement. That particular gift was crucial at this moment. If one of the other leaders from Jerusalem had visited Antioch and demanded that they should all follow the Jewish law, it could have been incredibly destructive. Thank God that they sent an encourager! When Barnabas got to Antioch, all he could do was rejoice! In his joy, he encouraged the church to keep it up and to stay true to the Lord. Making good appointments was crucial in the early church and it still is today. If the church is to thrive it needs people like Barnabas whose love for the Lord is so strong that they bring encouragement wherever they go. It must have been incredibly tough for the early Christians to live for God in a society that was fundamentally opposed to everything that they stood for. And it still is today. We need to pray that God will raise up an army of wise and godly encouragers. QUESTION: Who has been the greatest encourager in your Christian life? PRAYER: Loving God, thank you for all those to whom you have given the special gift of encouragement. Amen

Philippians 4.19 NLT 'And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.' Generosity is a beautiful thing. I had the blessing of a very generous aunt. She never married and was a devoted follower of Jesus. She was generous with her time especially to neighbours who were in need. Although she held a very senior executive role she was always happy to do the most menial jobs and would think nothing of it. She died whilst taking a neighbour to hospital and that seemed to sum up her life. She was always very generous with her money and was always looking for creative ways of helping people and planted firmly in my teenage mind the blessing of being generous. Christians are not automatically generous and the apostle Paul notes that the generosity of the Philippian church stood in marked contrast to many of the others. As he brings this letter to a close he thanks them once again for their gifts and describes them as being “a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God”. When we give financial support to one another God notices and is blessed by our action, because in our giving we are reflecting the generosity that God first showed to us. However generous we might be, our generosity is only ever a pale reflection of the generosity of God. This beautiful letter has described the way in which God has poured out his love to us in the Lord Jesus Christ. And now Paul assures his readers that they can look to the future with confidence knowing that God will continue to supply them with everything that they need. God loves us too much to give us everything we want but we can be sure that, whatever our circumstances or our needs, God will perfectly provide for us. QUESTION: Who has inspired you by their generosity, and in what ways do you seek to be generous to others? PRAYER: Thank you, loving God, that you have always been generous to me and always will be. Amen

SERMON THESIS- Today the Holy Spirit spot-lights two spiritual elements within our current cultural condition- 1- The operative force of -the mystery of iniquity- which is already active, and 2- The removal of that prophetic figure specified as -the Restrainer- who is currently withstanding the forces of iniquity. These two truths stand central to God's prophetic program and must ever be held in tension. The operations of -The mystery of iniquity- are reaching flood levels in modern society, and once -the Restrainer- is finally and fully removed, the dam will give way to an unprecedented tidal surge of world-wide wickedness. Philippians 2.22-23 NLT 'But you know how Timothy has proved himself. Like a son with his father, he has served with me in preaching the Good News. I hope to send him to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here.' Timothy was clearly very important to Paul. Born in Lystra in Galatia (now part of Turkey) he had a Jewish mother and a Greek father. Paul met him on his second missionary journey and he was a regular companion from then onwards. The letter to the Philippians was one of six letters in which Timothy was named as the co-author with Paul, and the apostle also wrote two deeply personal and moving letters specifically to Timothy who he refers to as his dear son. Here in Philippians, Paul says that he has no one else like him. Everyone else looked after their own interests, but not Timothy, who could be relied upon as a man of faith and someone who genuinely cared. As Paul languished in prison it must have been wonderful for him to know that he had Timothy's continual support. Paul's future was entirely unclear and his many references to death suggest that he wasn't at all certain that he would get out alive. Paul had to rely on those who could continue his missionary work and in Timothy he had someone who had proved himself, and who could be relied upon to take the work forward. Our lives are very different from Paul's, but we also need those on whom we can completely rely. Thank God for the blessing of good friends who share our convictions and our burdens, and who are willing to walk with us whatever happens. There is a wonderful verse in Proverbs that says that “a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18.24) What a gift! QUESTION: Who are you able to rely upon and how do you look after your relationship with them? PRAYER: Lord God, thank you for the gift of friends. Help me never to take them for granted but always to be loyal in my love and support for them. Amen

It was wonderful; we all laughed and learned a lot.One of us happened to mention that it was intimidating. Yes, whatever is unfamiliar might appear to be intimidating, fearful until we jump in and give it a try!The Polish-born scientist Marie Curie wrote: “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” Curie was barred from university at a time when women stayed in the home and winning not 1 but 2 Nobel prizes in science was about as likely as getting to the moon. And yet Curie was awarded the prize for Physics in 1903 and then again for Chemistry in 1911.   Question:  Who and what can we understand more so that we may fear less and live better, stronger, more productive lives? This is the place to thrive together. The Role of Gratitude in Recovery from a Heart Attack with Jackie Bledsoe: Day 76

The Man in the Pew Show with Phil Mershon

Do you appreciate your life? What if you had a heart attack?   In this episode, I talk to Jackie Bledsoe about his near-death experience with a heart attack. We explore the profound role that gratitude plays in the recovery process.   The heart attack At the age of 43, Jackie had a massive heart attack, known as a “Widowmaker.” He thought he could be dying and saw God orchestrate the lives of seven people to be at the right place at the right time to keep him alive. Several of them were supposed to be somewhere else, but in retrospect, it's obvious God directed each of them to be there.   Jackie remains thankful daily as he knows he could have left his family without a husband, father, and son. He has a profound sense of mission as he knows God spared him for a reason.   The path to recovery That doesn't mean the road to recovery was easy. As a former athlete, Jackie had to learn to not push through the pain as the pain was a warning sign. But once his body recovered, he now has to tell his mind that he's no longer injured. The body and mind don't heal at the same speed!   Spiritually, he's learning to remain on God's spiritual heart surgery table. At times, he would prefer to get off and take things at his own pace. But after experiencing complete blockage in one of his major aortic valves, he understands the importance of allowing God to remove spiritual blockage from his heart (e.g. selfishness and pride).    The Role of Gratitude in Recovery Not only does Jackie practice daily gratitude, but he also treasures every moment knowing that most people don't survive a widowmaker heart attack.   Like Jackie, I've had a near-death experience and know that when we remember that we could have died, it gives us many reasons to be grateful each and every day.   Researchers at Harvard University discovered that gratitude is a key contributor to recovering from a heart attack. Jackie practices daily gratitude by remembering three distinct things for which he's thankful. He also regularly retells the story of his heart attack recovery.   The Spiritual Recovery Team Just as God orchestrated seven people to save Jackie's life, he's also seen the importance of allowing key people into the spiritual heart surgery and the recovery process. We falsely believe we can do it by ourselves, but God designed us to help one another.   QUESTION: Who's on your spiritual recovery team?   Who is Jackie Bledsoe? Jackie Bledsoe is a bestselling author and international speaker who's reached over 100,000 people with The 7 Rings of Marriage.   He and his wife, Stephana, are the founders of Happily Married Couples, a marriage brand that helps couples better connect and communicate, so they can create marriages worth celebrating.   You may have seen Jackie on Good Morning America, ABC News, WTHR (NBC Indianapolis), The 700 Club, Moody Radio, The Huffington Post, Yahoo!, CBN's Turning Point International, YouVersion's Bible App, HomeLife Magazine, and more. Knuckleheads with Quentin Richardson & Darius Miles

We got Cynthia “Raise the Roof” Cooper in the building ladies and gents! Question: Who was the first person to bust her ass in the WNBA? Answer: NOBODY. Coop takes us back to her childhood, and how Lynette Woodard – the first female Harlem Globetrotter – was the female basketball player she looked up to. She talks about the dynamic duo she and Cheryl Miller formed at USC, the decade she spent dominating the basketball scene in Italy, and how she spoiled herself with some fine Italian leather goods while she was there. Luckily, she came back to represent the USA and win some gold, and then stuck around to play in the first ever WNBA season. She speaks about her elite Houston Comets team — you know, that one with Coop, Tina Thompson AND Sheryl Swoopes. Yeesh. How they won four — that’s back to back to backto back! — championships. Coop breaks down why she is absolutely made to be a coach in the NBA, and there’s just no disagreeing. Straight facts. Settle in and get ready for this episode. The first woman to be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame, Cynthia Cooper is a legend of the game. Period. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Question: “Who pays closing costs in a Wholesale deal?” It is completely optional. I had a friend call me the other day… he is buying a house and said, “Hey, I found this fee, is this normally real”. And I was like, “yeah there could be a fee for everything, this is America.” You could charge a fee just for listening to me, it’s called consultation. We charge a fee for anything and it’s absolutely legal to do that. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.Dad was the instigator: a new recipe, a different place to go camping, always some idea. Although in truth what dad liked most of all was a good walk, a good meal, and a good seat beside a lake.Mom was the do-er: she made it all happen. As the first born daughter and eventually eldest of 7 children I became a do-er, too. I couldn’t understand dad’s desire to just be in the present moment. I was too busy, doing. Here I am late in life finally embracing what I resisted for so many decades. Sitting on the deck with my early morning coffee, sun glinting her way through the pine trees, song birds waking up, deer high stepping their way through the tall grass.Do nothing. Think nothing. Enjoy everything. I am my father’s daughter.Question: Who are you discovering you are most like?     This is the place to thrive together. Estimates of the number of marchers, most of whom were African American men, ranged from 400,000 to nearly 1.1 million, ranking it among the largest gatherings of its kind in American history.   50.    Several African American leaders did not support the march, including Mary Frances Berry, chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and Rep. John Lewis, the latter of whom saw Farrakhan’s message as an effort to “resegregate America.”   51.    Comments:   52.    Featured Speaker: Louis Farrakhan, @62 yrs old   53.    Born Louis Eugene Wolcott on May 11, 1933, in New York City, New York, to Sarah Mae Manning and Percival Clark. His parents separated even before he was born.   54.    He did not know his biological father and was brought up by his stepfather Louis Wolcott. The death of his stepfather in 1936 led to the relocation of his family to Boston, Massachusetts.   55.    From an early age, he received rigorous training in violin, so much so that by the time he turned 13 he had mastered the instrument and was playing along with the ‘Boston College Orchestra’ and ‘Boston Civic Symphony.’   56.    In his first year as a teenager, he became one of the first black performers to appear on the ‘Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour. ‘The following year, he had two national level victories under his belt.   57.    He attended the prestigious ‘Boston Latin School’ after which he was admitted to ‘English High School. ‘After graduating from ‘English High School,’ he enrolled for a three-year course at the ‘Winston-Salem Teachers College’ on a track scholarship.   58.    Starting from the 1950s, he pursued a career in music. He recorded several calypso albums under the pseudonym ‘The Charmer. ‘He toured frequently since the release of his first album. In 1955, he organized a show titled ‘Calypso Follies’ in Chicago.   59.    Interestingly, one of his songs remained a chartbuster and on top of the ‘Billboard Chart’ for five years in a row.   60.    It was while pursuing his professional music career that he was first exposed to the teachings of ‘Nation of Islam’ through his friend and saxophonist Rodney Smith.   61.    Later, Elijah Muhammad invited him to attend the Nation of Islam’s annual ‘Saviours' Day’ address. Inspired by the discourse, he resolved to be a member of ‘Nation of Islam’ (NOI) in 1955. (@22)   62.    He fulfilled all the requirements to become a registered Muslim/ registered believer/ registered laborer of NOI. Subsequently, he received an approval by the NOI headquarter in July 1955.   63.    Initially known by the name Louis X, his name was later changed to the ‘holy name’ Louis Farrakhan. A derivative of the Arabic word furqan, which means "The Criterion". He gave up on a music career and dedicated his life to the ‘Nation of Islam.’   64.    Within a span of nine months, he worked his way up and started serving as the assistant minister to Malcolm X, who was heading the Muhammad’s Temple of Islam in Boston at that time.   65.    He was soon made the minister as Malcom X was shifted to the Temple of Muhammad in Harlem, New York. Farrakhan replaced Malcom X as the minister at the Boston Temple.   66.    Malcolm X was assassinated on 21 February 1965 and Farrakhan profited from it as he was appointed to two prominent positions in NOI. (@32)   67.    He was appointed to the chair of the minister of the influential Harlem Mosque in 1965, a position which he held until 1975. Furthermore, he became the national spokesman and representative of NOI and served in this position until Elijah Muhammad’s death in 1975.   68.    In 1975, the Nation's leadership chose Wallace Muhammad, also known as Warith Deen Mohammad, the fifth of Elijah Muhammad's sons, not Farrakhan, as the new Supreme Minister.   69.    Though Farrakhan remained a loyalist of the Muhammad clan for some time, in 1977 he withdrew his support from the organization and rebuilt the original ‘Nation of Islam’ which had been established by its founders.   70.    Soon after its foundation, he started a weekly newspaper by the name ‘The Final Call, Inc.’ The objective of this initiation was to communicate his views and thoughts to the supporters and members.   71.    Two years later, along with his supporters, he organized the first ‘Saviours’ Day’ convention in Chicago. Both her parents, James and Gayle Watkins, were musicians and singers.   126.    Her parents divorced when she was three years old. Thereafter, she was raised by her mother, who taught her to be “confident and independent”. At the age of nine, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where her maternal grandmother used to live.   127.    As a child, she was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia (SCA), as a result of which, she had to spend a lot of time in hospitals.   128.    As a teenager, she began working as a hair model, eventually serving as a manicurist and shampoo girl at a popular Atlanta hair salon.   129.    In 1990, (@20) Tionne Watkins heard that a teenager named Crystal Clear was planning to open an all-girls group like Bell Biv DeVoe, having a tomboyish, hip-hop image. Eventually, she appeared for an audition and joined the three-member band, the third one being Lisa Lopes.   130.    Calling themselves ‘2nd Nature’, they soon started working with Jermaine Dupri and Rico Wade on demo tape material.   131.    Meanwhile, Watkins met Perri "Pebbles" Reid, the owner of the management and production company, Pebbitone, and managed to arrange an audition with her.   132.    Impressed by the girls, Reid arranged an audition with the local record label, LaFace Records, co-founded by her then husband Antonio Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmund. She also changed the group’s name to TLC with ‘T’ representing Tionne, ‘L’ Lisa, and ‘C’ Crystal.   133.    Although Antonio Reid was impressed by Watkins and Lopes, he did not approve of Clear, who was eventually replaced by Rozonda Thomas in April 1991. Very soon, Watkins became "T-Boz", Lopes became "Left-Eye", and Thomas became "Chilli”, so that ‘TLC’ continued to be the acronym of their names.   134.    Their debut album, 'Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip' was released on February 25, 1992, by LaFace Records. It peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard 200, selling six million copies worldwide, and was certified quadruple platinum RIAA.   135.    'Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip' scored three top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Baby-Baby-Baby’ peaking at number two, ‘Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg’ at number six and ‘What About Your Friends’ at number seven. Moreover, ‘Baby-Baby-Baby’ also peaked at number one at Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.   136.    In 1993, the group started working on their second album, ‘CrazySexyCool’. But because of Lisa’s personal problems, it took time to complete and was ultimately released on September 15, 1994.   137.    Certified Diamond, the album was a huge success, peaking at the 3rd position on the US Billboard 200. It sold over 11 million copies in the United States alone. The album was nominated for six Grammy Awards, out of which it won two and helped TLC to become the second-best selling girl group of all time.   138.    Billboard named them the ‘Artist of the Year’ at the Billboard Music Awards. The album also appeared on Rolling Stone Magazine’s ’500 Greatest Albums of All Time’.   139.    Despite the success, TLC was forced to file for bankruptcy because of poor contracts they had signed in 1991. Eventually, the group signed a new contract with the same company and went back to work.   140.    Rozonda Ocelian Thomas (@24) was born on 27th February 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia to Abdul Ali and Ava Thomas. Her mother is of African American as well as Native American descent, while her father is of East Indian and Middle Eastern Background. She was raised by a single mother and did not meet her father until she was 25.   141.    Thomas studied at Benjamin E. Mays High School, from where she graduated in 1989. Soon she started working as a back-up dancer for the R&B group Damian Dame.   142.    In 1991, (@20) Rozonda Thomas joined the pop group TLC.   143.    Lisa Nicole Lopes (@24) was born on May 27, 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father was Ronald Lopes Sr., a staff sergeant in the US Army, and her mother was Wanda Denise, a seamstress. She was of Cape Verdean, Mexican, American, African and Portuguese descent. She was the eldest of three siblings. Her parents divorced when she was in school. Following this, she was raised by her paternal grandmother.   144.    At the age of five, she began playing the piano and eventually started composing songs over the next few years. She studied at the Philadelphia School for Girls.   145.    In late 1990, having heard of an open casting call for a new girl group through her then-boyfriend, Lopes moved to Atlanta to audition.   146.    Lopes’ personal life, though, was marred by her rocky relationship with football great Andre Rison, and in 1994, she was arrested for burning down his home.   147.    In 2000, she began her solo-project ‘Supernova’ which was set to be released in August 2001. However, the date was postponed repeatedly. It was eventually broadcast over the internet in 2002. The album was yet to be released formally and a fourth TLC project was in the making, when Lopes met with a tragic car accident in 2002 which unfortunately put an end to her life.  she was just 30 years old.   148.    Question: Is the WAP controversy justified?   149.    Movie Scene: Friday 1995 film   150.    (Links and Resources: Strong Black Legends: John Witherspoon; "John Witherspoon's Style of Comedy was Timeless," Justin Tinsley, The Undefeated; Gene Siskel's review, Chicago Tribune; Desson Howe's review, Washington Post; "After 20 Years, Friday Is (Still) The Most Important Film Ever Made About The Hood," Kelley L. Colorful characters abound, but nothing ties them together. I knew the picture was in trouble when its first gag involved an old lady spewing obscenities. (Rating: 1 star)   153.    By Desson Howe, Washington Post Staff Writer - April 28, 1995: "Friday," a comedy starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, is dirty, offensive, infantile and may launch a few sanctimonious opinion columns. And I mean that in the nicest way. The movie, which shamelessly hawks its own "Friday" music video at the beginning and eschews political correctness whenever possible, happens to be incredibly funny.   154.    After 20 Years, “Friday” Is (Still) The Most Important Film Ever Made About The Hood: - Kelley L. Carter, BuzzFeed News Reporter. Posted April 20, 2015.   155.    “...Todd Boyd, a professor at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts as well as screenwriter and producer of the 1999 coming-of-age drama The Wood, says that Friday didn't just add an element of comedy to depictions of everyday life in black neighborhoods, it spawned a new genre — the hood comedy.   156.    “The film demonstrated that black life was not all drugs, violence, dysfunction, and pathology — yet instead of offering a Cosby Show-like fantasy, Friday put these issues in context, finding humor in the everyday lives of regular black people,” he explains. “Since the 1970s, Hollywood has always looked favorably upon low-budget black films that produce high profit margins at the box office. Friday expanded the representation of the hood into the realm of comedy and achieved box office success at the same time.” 157.    Other hood comedies that followed include: 1996’s satire Don’t Be a Menace While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, 1998’s The Player’s Club (Cube wrote and directed it), 2001’s How High, and 2002’s Barbershop, the latter of which Cube starred in.   158.    Question: Friday or Carwash? - Chris Tucker or Mike Epps?   159.    TV Scene   160.    “Was UPN Black America’s Last Hope for a Black Sitcom-Friendly Broadcast Television Network?” April 20, 2017 - https://shadowandact.com   161.    “...Since ABC’s "Black-ish" debuted this fall, it has drawn numerous comparisons to "The Cosby Show" — and I have questions. I wonder why the majority of essays and critiques jumped to a show that has been off-air for 22 years. Although few television shows rivaled the mainstream popularity of Bill Cosby’s chef d’oeuvre, plenty of Black sitcoms have filled its gap since its 1992 finale. Does no one remember the quasi-Black glory of United Paramount Network (UPN)? And can there ever be another like it?   162.    From 1995 to 2006 UPN was the home for over 10 concurrently running Black sitcoms (and a handful of dramas). Given the sheer volume of programming, that’s remarkable in and of itself. But perhaps what is more noteworthy than the number of shows is the range of Black life they displayed.   163.    "All of Us," produced by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, centered on a blended family of two divorced spouses and their significant others. The Essence Atkins and Rachel True-helmed "Half & Half" explored the relationship between two estranged half-sisters. "Moesha" was UPN’s most successful sitcom during its five-year run and introduced America to another beloved, nuclear Black family besides the Huxtables. Other notable UPN sitcoms included "One on One," "The Parkers," "Eve," and "Malcolm & Eddie."   164.    UPN actively sought programming aimed for Black audiences at a time when Black mainstays from the Big Three networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) were waning. "Family Matters" was cancelled from ABC’s coveted TGIF lineup in 1998. Fox declined to extend Martin Lawrence’s eponymously named sitcom the previous year. The major networks were beginning to narrow their viewership to exclude all-Black casting on their sitcoms. Not only were Black actors finding work on shows sold to UPN, but established Black producer-writers like Eunetta T. Boone and Ralph Farquhar found a home as well.   165.    Despite—and maybe because of—its friendliness to Black programming, UPN suffered from a reputation as a sub-par network. The ratings for their sitcoms often scraped the bottom of the Nielsen barrel. UPN is remembered more for its utter failures ("Homeboys in Outer Space") and ignored when we fondly recall the glory of "Girlfriends."   166.    “UPN took the rejects. UPN was 'the Black channel,'” we joke. UPN may not have been perfect, but it gave Black audiences so much to choose from without feeling as if one show had to represent the totality of Blackness.   167.    Accordingly, "Black-ish" has a lot riding on its success. Black audiences tune in hoping big wigs take notice and order more Black sitcoms. But it is telling that major networks began a “blackout” of successful Black cast shows in the late 90s and The CW essentially did the same a decade later.   168.    "Black-ish" could be the start of another heyday for Black sitcoms. We reach backward to "The Cosby Show" because we love it best and we always will. But in doing so, we ignore the stable of Black shows that kept us laughing long after The Huxtables faded to black. However, the success of "Black-ish" will remain singular until executives reexamine their beliefs about African American audiences; we need them, like UPN once did, to give us a chance. I just hope it doesn’t take another decade.   169.    Other Notable UPN Shows: Everybody Hates Chris 2005 / Girlfriends 2000 / All of Us 2003 / Moesha 1996 / The Parkers 1999 / Malcolm and Eddie 1996 / In The House 1995 / Between Brothers 1997 /   170.    Other Notable WB Shows: The WB The Wayans Brothers 1995 / The Parent 'Hood 1995 / Steve Harvey Show 1996 / The Jamie Foxx Show 1996 / Smart Guy 1997 / MIB Animated 1997 / The PJs 1999   171.    Question: What the hell is wrong with BET?   172.    Vote: Best/most important/favorite pop culture item from 1995?

It’s here. Podcasting is not for the faint of heart. It’s a personal journey, like so many of our creative endeavors. Unless we have some clarity about what we do, for whom we do it, and how come we persevere we won’t be strong enough to keep on going, to keep putting one foot in front of the other when The Dip shows up and circles back again.  I walk this path, this journey with many unseen friends and colleagues. I thank each one from the marrow of my bones for sharing the stories and the magic together.Question: Who is giving you a hand up right now and, have you said "Thank you!"?   This is the place to thrive together. 466 - How to Seek God’s Face

Leaving Laodicea

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2020 59:01

One of the four requirements found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 is a cryptic command to “seek” God’s face. Note, not His hand, nor His blessings or grace, but simply to seek God’s face. What does that mean? And how is that done?Think, how do we begin the process of seeking God’s face? What does the Scripture say about that? Is it something I should be doing? Are there any requirements or things we first must do to be ushered into the presence of God? What is it like to “behold the face of God”? Is that even possible? If I do seek God’s face, won’t I die? And if I actually do experience the presence of God, how will that experience change my life? It’s maybe not as simple as we were led to believe. So, How Do I Seek God’s Face?In Psalm 24, we find the requirements God demands to have unhindered intimacy with Him, or to seek His face. These are not suggestions, but are aspects of our sanctification that allow us to “be holy, for I am Holy” by experience (1 Peter 1:16), and not just theologically or positionally in Christ.Note the question and answer in Psalm 24:3-4:Question: Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place?Answer: He who has clean hands (outward holiness) and a pure heart (inward holiness), who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. Also, note the distinction between outward and inward holiness. It’s the same distinction we find in the Sermon on the Mount. For example, let’s look at Matthew 5:21-22:Outward: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'”Inward: “But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.”And there is so much more we can learn about God’s requirements or standards that must be met to have the kind of intimacy with Him described as “seeking His face” and finding it. So join with us today as we strive to do just that, to “seek His face” together. To download the slides to this message, click – HEREOur Latest Posts:America’s Civil Wars – Then and Now50 Things You Need to Get Before It’s Too LateDay Two: Sending Me to You in the Form of Him465: The Forgotten Discipline of FastingThe Curtain is Closing for America

I’m walking miles a day, every day, changing up the lifestyle, but it’s not quite enough to get me where I want to be.So, come Tuesday and Friday I’m showing up for 24 hour intermittent fasting. I’ll give it a few weeks to see how it goes.We may never know how we have inspired or motivated someone. And someone may never know how they inspired or motivated us. But! If we do know and have the chance to say “thank you!” then let’s do that. While enjoying drinks on the Monarch Resort’s patio in Dana Point, Matt and his college buddies, who had gathered for their once-a-year guy’s weekend, were intrigued by the sight of a bunch of men dressed in black doing some sort of “clap and boom” not too far from them. Unbeknownst to Matt, this would mark the beginning of his Warrior journey. Welcome to this episode of Warrior Week: Parables from the Pit, with your host, Sam Falsafi, lead trainer, and his special guest, Matt Davenport, graduate of Warrior Week #60. Parable #1: Two-Clap BOOM! While enjoying drinks on the Monarch Resort’s patio in Dana Point, Matt and his college buddies, who had gathered for their once-a-year guy’s weekend, were intrigued by the sight of a bunch of men dressed in black doing some sort of “clap and boom.” Curious about them, Matt was told by their server that it was a secret business group called Wake Up Warrior. Upon returning home, his google search led him to watch video after video with messages that spoke directly to him. “I felt like someone had read my mind.” QUESTION How did you first encounter the message of Warrior?   Parable #2: From Denial to Awareness At the time of entering KingsKit 3, Matt’s life was in a pretty dark place, including his marriage. “The whole idea of telling the truth had me start looking in the mirror. It brought awareness of all the things I needed to change in my life, which was overwhelming at first.” It was through his association with men inside of Warrior that Matt felt he could be authentic and totally honest, and that the change he was witnessing in other men’s lives could be his experience as well. He was willing to do whatever it took to start making changes in his life, including attending Warrior Week. QUESTION Where in your world do you know you’re being authentic? Parable #3: Tell the Truth, Burn the Past It was that first night in the Pit where Matt realized he had been living his whole life seeking things that he thought would set him free and make him happy. He had tried everything except telling the truth. It was in the Pit that he discovered, “until you tell the truth, there is no way out.” Looking back on his life with regret and shame had become the go-to pattern for Matt. It was through writing down and burning a list all of the things he was going to let go of that put into motion the process of setting himself free. QUESTION What is something you know you need to burn from your past? Parable #4: Before & After Matt came out of Warrior Week renewed, reframed, and excited to leverage himself and his power. It definitely proved to be a pivotal point in his life. “Who I have been as a father to my girls has been life-altering.” Before Warrior, Matt explains, “I was always sedating. I was a workaholic, always watching TV, always distracted, never present, and always wanting to escape.” At the time, alcohol played a huge role in Matt’s life. Today he is alcohol-free which has profoundly affected how he shows up as a father. QUESTION Who are you today vs. the man you were before Warrior?   Parable #5: Warrior Week Plus Warrior Week has shifted into a virtual experience. “It’s amazing to see how we are able to create the same conditions and feelings virtually as we did in person, ” comments Coach Sam. He further explains that it’s the space and energy that the men allow themselves to experience that creates the conditions for their Warrior Week, whether in-person or virtually. QUESTION When will you experience Warrior Week Plus? “Parables from the Pit” “We are brought up with this condition where the only gear we know is the gear of the past, the grudge’s gear.” –Sam Falsafi “Going into Warrior Week, I felt like I was a prisoner of my past. Walking out of Warrior Week, I felt and believed that I was a new and different person; that I could create whatever life I wanted, and that the past no longer had power over me.” –– Matt Davenport

Shawn was led to the gates of Warrior by nothing less than perfect timing and divine intervention. After searching for answers to his wife’s eighteen-year condition, it was during a month-long stay at the Mayo Clinic while waiting for his wife that Shawn randomly opened up Facebook. Enter Garrett J White promoting a 30-day challenge. Welcome to the Warrior Week podcast with your host, Coach Sam Falsafi, and his special guest, Shawn McDonald, Warrior Week 54 graduate. Parable #1: Divine Intervention null Shawn was led to the gates of Warrior by nothing less than perfect timing and divine intervention. After searching for answers to his wife’s eighteen-year condition, it was during a month-long stay at the Mayo Clinic while waiting for his wife that Shawn randomly opened up Facebook. Enter Garrett J White promoting a 30-day challenge. At the time, Shawn’s relationship with his wife had gotten to an all-time low, and they were moving closer to divorce. “I was financially very successful, career-wise very successful; I was an executive doing very, very well. Inside? I was literally dead. I was hopeless as to where my wife’s situation was and very hopeless where I was mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. So… I took the challenge.” QUESTION Where were you when you were first introduced to the message of Wake Up Warrior? Parable #2: The Garage The first evolution in the Kings Kit Challenge takes place virtually in the guy’s garages. Previously organized because of his wife’s skills, his garage was now a complete mess, which was a vivid and glaring reflection of the shit taking place in his life, in his heart, and in the relationship with his wife.  “The whole process of bringing practical circumstances to the forefront of my perspective, and helping the other men and me literally walk through a journey of breaking things down piece by piece, helped me to completely get out of my pit and was the beginning of a revolution for me.” QUESTION What is your garage a reflection of in your life?   Parable #3: Exposed One challenge led to another until Shawn eventually found himself in the throes of the crucible, Warrior Week. During the Inquisition process, it felt like someone had peeled back the vale and had exposed where he had been for over 20 years of his life. Although he was ready to understand what was going on inside of him, admittedly, it was so much harder than he expected it to be. “When you finally get down to an understanding of things you have danced around forever, that awakening means everything.  The biggest thing for me was literally coming to a place of acknowledging that I hate myself and that I’ve never loved my wife.” QUESTION Where in your world is it time to shine a light to expose what you’ve been hiding? Parable #4: You’re Not Alone All around us, families are being crushed and shattered. Men are operating at the lowest version of themselves and have been conditioned to believe they have to go through this life alone. But that is simply not the case. “We underestimate the importance of men who have gone before us. In order to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with somebody, you have to have been tested by the fire yourself. You’ve had to have gone into your own pit, and trust another man to help you walk out of that pit.” QUESTION Who has your back in this world? Parable #5: Own Your Why On the second day of Warrior Week, Shawn experienced the next major step in opening his eyes to the work that lay ahead of him. He began identifying and imprinting into his soul the purpose for his existence, shouting to the world the names of his wife and children. “This is why I’m alive! This is my family that’s been entrusted to my care.”He realized it was his unwillingness to show up for himself and his family that led to a path of destruction for all of them. “It led me to five affairs, two bankruptcies, kids who didn’t want to have anything to do with me, a son who got on drugs, and a daughter that got raped.” QUESTION What is your why?   “Parables from the Pit“ “The majority of men don’t have the courage to admit their faults because they don’t want to remind themselves of their mistakes. And so they hide and hang with “positive” people who are also liars, and who will never have the fucking balls to remind them of their mistakes and lies.” –-Sam Falsafi “It’s one thing to point out another man’s lies; it’s a completely different thing to help lead him to the light.” –– Shawn McDonald

High achievers come with big ambitions and an intensity that helps them succeed. It’s one of the reasons they excel and are often seen as the super star leader or go-to member of the team. That drive can also lead to higher levels of stress and the potential for burn out. It can show up as less-than their best at work and can even carry over to problems in relationships and life outside the office. Today’s replay with a purpose addresses emotional intelligence. Guest Dr. Samantha Madhosingh explains that it is the key to sustaining high achievement and personal fulfillment. 2:20  What is emotional wellness? How you feel about yourself. How you show up in the world. Empathy and the ability understand all the ways you contribute, not just through work and achievement. 6:08  How do we cope? We see high achievers use busy-ness with no time to “worry” about feelings. When stress becomes untenable, Dr. Samantha shares that everything from overwork, to drinking and self-medicating is used to keep the high achiever going. 8:34  Emotional Wellness Myths It’s not important. Truth: How you feel (especially about yourself) is everything. Asking for help is a sign of weakness. Truth: It’s a sign of strength to want to be your best. Dr. Samantha shares excellent advice for those who want to change the burn-out dynamic. External drivers bring us happiness. Truth: What’s out there will never be enough if you don’t take care of your emotional wellbeing. 12:23  Coach Mo reminds us that it’s hard to see the picture when you live inside your own frame. Dr. Samantha shares a process that can help you make that shift. It’s a simple exercise that anyone can do. Don’t miss this step, especially if you want to continue to be a valued leader at work, with your health and wellness intact. 19:52  Coach Mo Knows Tip: Relaxation Techniques for Stress Relief   Question: Who will you invite to be your accountability partner? Inspiration: There are two things over which you have complete domination, authority, and control. Your mind and your mouth.   Dr. Molefi Asante Resources: Connect with Dr. Samantha Madhosingh
