Jared's fresh off of a trip to Montreal, or as he calls it The Coldest Place on Earth, and comes back with hot takes about the food and one glowing restaurant recommendation. Then J&J gab about their recent trip to L.A. and the difference in hotness factor between Los Angeles and New York (Gremlin Swamp People unite!). They also reflect on a strange interaction they had with a recently divorced man at a bar.Later, we dive into emails and hear from a listener who feels that her boyfriend made a joke at her expense that went too far. On an Awkward Encounter that we'll never forget, a listener takes a chance going to a playoff hockey game with a guy she just met. Things take a turn when the “Mayor of Detroit” picks her up in a Dukes of Hazard themed golf cart and gets plastered at the game. Then a listener taps J&J for advice on a romantic connection where the physical isn't matching the emotional one. We end with a round Red Flag Deal Breaker about a forgotten vasectomy, a mean quote from a Rate My Professor review, and an aspiring “boy dad.” Have a dating question for Jordana and Jared? We're one month into 2025 and J&J are here to keep you motivated, even if you already quit your New Year's Resolutions. Jordana is fresh off of hosting a housewarming party and Jared is struggling to find time to write a book about dating while actively still dating. Later, we hop into emails, including a listener who wonders if her friends actually need to know the guy she's dating and we answer the mother of all dating questions: How do I approach the gym hottie without being creepy? Today's “Awkward Encounter” takes us to church with a wild listener story about hooking up with their former worship leader. On “Red Flag or Deal Breaker,” J&J debate if terrible reviews on RateMyProfessor are a good reason to not date someone, consider what proper texting etiquette looks like during a national emergency, and question whether it's bad form to refuse to go to a certain dating spot because it isn't romantic enough. It's back to school season! I miss college so much, not the school work but just how fun it was, college was some of the best years of my life! So in honor of being out of college for 5 years now I wanted to look back and share the best advise for any college students beginning this amazing chapter of their life. In this episode I discuss; Getting organized- find a planner or scheduling app you'll actually use and set reminders to help you stay on top of your school work Get involved- I met some of my best friends in college so find a way you can plug into your collegiate community Make your schedule work for you- the beauty of college is you get to set your schedule so create one that is condusive for you Never pay full price for text books- 'nuff said Look into your professors- check out RateMyProfessor.com Stay on top of your finances- everyone is broke in college but don't dig that hole any deeper. Apply for scholarships throughout your college career, learn to cook for yourself instead of eating out and take cash when you go out so you can stick to your budget When to splurge- I highly recommend splurging on bedding and electronics. You will spend a lot of time in your bed sleeping and studying so make sure it's comfy. Also, having a good laptop and nice headphones will definetely be a purchase you get your money's worth for Pack light- you can always switch out your clothes on break when you go back home; additionally, keep in mind you're not going to want to bring anything that can't be washed easily. Be proactive- take responsibility for your own education and devote time every day to study or review material, you will thank yourself some finals week Your time in college are such formative years, I know it can be overwhelming being on your own for the first time in a new place while trying to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. Just know that it's okay to not know what you're doing, the truth is no one does. Try to enjoy this time in your life, pursue your interests, learn so much, meet amazing people and HAVE FUN! Dr. Shaun Anderson grew up in Arkansas and it wasn't easy to say the least. He was homeless twice. He attended both an HBC (Historical Black College) and a PWI (Predominately White Institution). He was the first and last African-American to be in his doctoral program. And sadly, he had to deal with so much racism at the University of West Virginia, it took him a couple of years to heal from the trauma from all the gas lighting, lies, and public humiliation on social media. Years later when Dr. A. attended a conference, someone that was in his program, much to Dr. Anderson's surprise apologized to him for how he was treated. Dr. Anderson, who is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Communication and Faculty Advisor for the Institute of Business Ethics and Sustainability at Loyola Marymount University, has a 4.5 (out of 5) rating on RateMyProfessor.Com where many of his former students call him hilarious, relatable, and caring. We're joined by Karen Walsh, Founder and CEO of Allegro Solutions, on the podcast today to talk about the good, bad, and ugly of cybersecurity content marketing. As a compliance expert, former professor, lawyer, and kickass cybersecurity auditor, Karen shares her formula for content marketing success, educates us on educating our audience, and even gives us a quick peek at one of her many talents outside of the cybersecurity space.  Timecoded Summary: [01:17] Introducing Karen and the concept of GRC (governance, risk, compliance) [04:27] Educating your audience through correct usage of webpage real estate [13:02] Discovering the formula for solid content marketing copy [22:46] Throwing out a few vague and unhelpful content marketing “bad words”  [34:41] Kicking ass in cybersecurity as a woman, a marketer, and a freelancer Sponsor: Thank you to our sponsors and producers Hacker Valley Media! Chris Cochran and Ron Eddings run an amazing studio, which produces not only the Breaking Through in Cybersecurity Marketing podcast, but a bunch of other shows that you're going to want to listen to as well. You can check these all out at HackerValley.com.    Do we really need to explain this again?  When explaining the essentials of educating your audience, Karen encounters more than her fair share of clients who think they don't have to explain or educate as much as they do. Education cannot be made with assumptions or without proper research into your audience. Although many of your potential clients may understand the terms you're using, explaining and educating instead of assuming will avoid making an “*ss” out of anyone.  “Have high standards of educating those who are coming into your website. They need to know things and they're not going to take that next step to convert if they don't understand and if you haven't educated them.”   How do you mix in SEO in order to be telling a good story to your buying audience, but also try and rank for terms for when people are searching? Karen believes that SEO and content marketing is a formula, and bases a lot of her work around the essentials of that formula. These are three challenges that X industry has when trying to do Y security functions. Through explaining the challenges faced and the methods that could be used to solve them, you're training yourself to not only educate, but to take up essential website real estate with impactful on-page SEO. “I mean, it's formulaic. You set out a business problem that you're looking to solve, right? You define what that business problem is, and when you're defining what that business problem is, you focus on certain terms.”   What are your top marketing buzzwords to avoid on content? Karen loves many things about content marketing, but there are some words that she cannot stand, including frictionless and actionable. For Karen, these words are vague and unhelpful in your marketing, leaving more questions than answers for potential clients. Get specific and explain why or how what you can provide separates your company from the pack. Don't fall victim to meaningless marketing words when specificity can help so much more.  “And I think part of the problem with a lot of these terms is people haven't really thought about what they mean by the term and so, it makes them meaningless.”    How do you earn respect in cybersecurity as a woman and a marketer who knows her shit? There are already huge barriers for women in cybersecurity, especially when coupled with non-technical roles, such as marketing and writing—  both of which are Karen's specialties. Karen explains that, for her, there's also the third layer of being a freelancer. Oftentimes, cybersecurity companies are playing into their own internal biases without realizing it and hurting freelancers by assuming negative things about their skills and quality of work.  “I know I'm a good writer. It's what I like doing. I don't want to code, but I have to make sure people don't treat me like I'm stupid because I don't do the technical job, which goes along with the marketing because they think marketing is fluff.” ---------- Spend some time with our guest Karen Walsh on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and the Allegro Solutions website  Additional resources mentioned in this podcast: Karen Walsh on Rate My Professor, Dark  Reading, Security Mag, Feedly's cybersecurity feed, Help Net, Votiro, TryHackMe, Black Girls in Cyber, Tricia Kicks SaaS, Everest Shoulder Rest, Lindsey Stirling Follow Gianna on LinkedIn Catch up with Maria on LinkedIn Join the Cybersecurity Marketing Society on our website, and keep up with us on Twitter Keep up with Hacker Valley on our website, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter

In this special guest feature, Brother Ross Baron teaches the origins of the 12 tribes of Israel, including what made Abraham chosen as ancient patriarch and as one who would covenant with Jehovah. We discuss what "the hearts turning to the fathers" actually means, and how we are a part of this ancient, you could even say eternal, legacy of obligation to and blessings from the Lord. Brother Baron shares his experiences while teaching at the BYU Jerusalem Center, including the miraculous events that took place to establish it, and which continue to occur in that sacred place. He gives his thoughts and historical context to help us better understand and respond to modern-day struggles in the Middle East. Brother Baron discusses the ancient symbolism and responsibilities of specific tribes, with emphasis on Levi, Ephraim, and Judah, and how all tribes are fulfilling their responsibilities in the Last Days. Finally, we talk about what can be expected in the days ahead for members of these tribes - also known as the "noble and great ones". DO NOT miss this incredible conversation - it will leave you convinced of your own great heritage, and will surely inspire you to boldly accept your own responsibilities to fulfill the covenants of the House of Israel.Brother Ross Baron was born and raised in Southern California. He joined the Church when he was 18, as a convert from Judaism, and served a mission to Argentina, Buenos Aires South which was divided and then served in Argentina Bahia Blanca.  When he returned home, Brother Baron met, fell in love with, and married Kathleen Ann Bolton in the Los Angeles Temple. They have nine children (five boys and four girls). Dr. Baron received a Bachelor's degree from BYU-Provo in Finance, a Master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California (USC) in Religion and Social Ethics. He was involved in business and entrepreneurship before going to work as a full-time Institute Director CES Coordinator in Southern California at the Glendora and Claremont Institutes for the Church.  After twelve years as an Institute Director and Coordinator, He came to teach at BYU-Idaho's Religion and Philosophy department in the summer of 2005 and commands an impressive 4.7 on Rate My Professor. Bro. Baron and his family also lived in Jerusalem Aug 2018-Aug 2019 where he served as a visiting professor at the BYU Jerusalem center. Bro. Baron has had a plethora of interesting opportunities throughout his life including swimming across the San Francisco Bay for the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, winning a stove, a mop, and a barrel sauna on The Price is Right, playing the drums with institute students at the Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles, and playing chess in the US open Tournament in 1991, where he first played Arnold Denker, who had previously beat Bobby Fisher, about which he says he was worked.Brother Baron represents an incredible example of what it is to boldly live the gospel, as he has often spoken at Christian colleges and universities, educating other sects about our faith. He once represented the Church on a History Channel special, and He also has led community firesides geared towards advocating for the church and which were attended by thousands. We invite you to follow us on Instagram @lddisciplespodcast. Madison authors, topics, book events & publishersIt's Stu Levitan's birthday, his 68th birthday to be precise, so he's taking the day off and dialing up an encore presentation of a conversation from this past February with UW Prof. Francine Hirsch, the author of Soviet Judgment at Nuremberg: A New History of the International Military Tribunal After World War II. Published by Oxford University Press, it is an award-winning reappraisal of the trial that became the pivot point between World War 2 and the Cold War.On November 20 1945, the United States, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union opened the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany, putting on trial 22 Nazi leaders and seven organizations, charged with conspiring in a crime against peace, planning and waging wars of aggression, participating in war crimes, and committing crimes against humanity. On September 30 and October 1, 1946 judges from the four countries announced their verdicts – 12 of the accused, including Reich Marshall Herman Goering and German foreign minister Joachim Von Ribbentrop, were sentenced to death by hanging, seven received prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life, and three were acquitted. Four organizations -the Leadership Corps of the Nazi Party, the Secret State Police, or Gestapo, the Protective Squadron or SS, and the Security Service, or SD, were found criminal – but only for what they did after the start of the war on September 1, 1939; three organizations – the Reich Cabinet, the Storm Troopers, or SA and the German General Staff and High Command – were found not guilty. In the collective memory of the west, these Nuremberg Trials – the only 4-power trials - were first and foremost an American exercise of finding truth and dispensing justice. Chief US prosecutor Robert H Jackson, on leave from his post as associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, was both star and director, with able prosecutors from Great Britain in friendly support. The French were only marginally relevant, and the Soviets … well, they were at best an annoyance and at worst an embarrassment whose obvious and overwhelming conflicts threatened the very legitimacy of the entire exercise. But what if that Nuremberg Moment was just a myth, and our memory is not of the whole story? What if, notwithstanding their own dealings with Hitler and their own war crimes, the Soviets were actually essential to the Tribunal happening at all? What if it was a Soviet lawyer who came up with the fundamental breakthrough in international law underpinning the entire trial? Those are the questions that Prof. Hirsch asks and answers brilliantly in this landmark account, for which she has already received the American Society for International Law's 2021 Certificate of Merit for a preeminent contribution to creative scholarship.Fran Hirsch is the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison so it is no surprise that she has produced such a work of scholarship and style. Her first book, Empire of Nations: Ethnographic Knowledge and the Making of the Soviet Union (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2005) received awards from the American Historical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, and the Council For European Studies. She also scores a very healthy 4.4 rating on Rate My Professor. It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat, Prof. Fran Hirsch.

EPISODE 5 BABY!!!! It's back to college for most students and in that spirit Ant and Kai discuss everything class related. It's only appropriate then that the guys start off by debating if students should even try to have 8:00 am classes. This also leads into the discussion as to which is worse, 8:00 am classes or 6:00 pm classes. Of course the negatives about such an early or late class is the effect it has on attendance. Another key part about classes is how you get to them. Ant and Kai discuss why it's actually better to not have a car on campus and both of their preferred methods of travel on campus. Both Kai and Ant had early and late classes and they give their stories on how they handled the tough schedule while also talking about how sometimes they attempted to finesse the system. After reminiscing on a foolish attempt by Kai to fake his attendance, the guys give advice on how to actually find your class on campus. Ant is a strong advocate for the FindMyClass app while Kai suggests a more “adventurous” method of finding your class. To top it all off of course the guys talk about their strategies or lack there off of researching their teachers. Ant always does his research via the rate my professor website while Kai tends to pick his teachers randomly. This comes back to haunt him though leading Kai to seek revenge on one of his worst teachers ever. Today in the Word Devotional

A website called Rate My Professor allows college students to evaluate their teachers, rating them on their level of difficulty and expertise. Many students, when selecting courses, will look at those reviews and use that information to decide which course to enroll in. These student reviews are highly influential! What one student, who has been through the course, says carries significance for those deciding whether or not to enroll. In his review of Jesus, John the Baptist declared Him “the Lamb of God” (v. 35), a statement that heavily influenced Andrew and John. Jesus then issued this life-changing invitation to His disciples to experience Him for themselves: “Come and you will see” (v. 39). He invited them to come, to walk alongside Him. After spending the day with Jesus, Andrew enthusiastically went to his brother Simon and proclaimed, “We have found the Messiah” (v. 41). Both John and Andrew became influencers, sharing the good news that the Messiah had come. Word of Jesus quickly spread to many others, including Philip, Andrew, and Peter. History now records the disciples’ day-to-day experiences as they walked alongside God’s Son and learned from His example. And Jesus’ influence did not stop with His death, resurrection, and ascension. His life has been recorded in the bestselling book of all time spreading from Jew to Gentile and to every continent. When we share how Christ has worked in our own lives, we influence others. Since September 2, 1981, my life has truly never been the same. Hallelujah! September 2 was the day of my salvation. Tell others how your life has been miraculously influenced by the saving grace of Jesus Christ. >> How has your life been changed by Jesus? Tell someone about it today, in a conversation, with a letter, or even on social media. While you might not write a bestselling book, you can certainly tell someone today Who has influenced your life.

Lee's talented. He's written 64 plays. He's been a professor at USC. He's built an agency that grew during the recession.  But it's more than talent. He works hard. Really hard.  And why wouldn't he? He believes work provides purpose.  He's a caring guy that speaks from the heart. And in fact, that's one of the founding elements in his agency - from the sales process through the execution of the work - “it's heart to heart” as Lee would say.  Although he didn't do all this alone. He has a brilliant business partner. He's fostered a team through an intentionally collaborative environment. After a long day of teaching at BYU where he expertly handles several classes (see his “Rate My Professor scores) on American Culture, Western Humanities from the Renaissance to Now and Interdisciplinary Studies, Kerry Soper unwinds by painting masterful small landscapes full of light, warmth and serenity. His tight schedule means he’s only able to produce a handful of paintings each year so the demand is high. He’s also an author of two books on comic strip satire. He attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice by publishing cartoons and short satiric pieces, as well. Kerry Soper studied art as an undergraduate at Utah State University. He then attended Emory University where he pursued an MA and PhD in American Studies. In his “spare” time he enjoys fly-fishing and soccer.

David and Tamler dive deep into Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 hallucinatory classic, Vertigo. Why does this movie seem to gain stature among critics and academics every year? Is this a really a exploration of Hitchcock's own obsessions and sexual repression? Is it a story about filmmaking and celebrity? Or is it just a twisty noir thriller about a man who has no job and can't kiss to save his life? Plus, some thoughts about bad reviews on Rate My Professor and why it's hard to get feedback about job performance in academia.

Over the past month I had the privilege to participate in Goodie Nation's #Hacktheviolence College Innovation Lab hack-a-thon. This was my very 1st time participating in the whirlwind of productivity that is a hack-a-thon. It's EXHAUSTING, but so rewarding. I had the opportunity to contribute to the Civility app by Roverlent, which is like Glassdoor or Rate My Professor but for police officers. It's designed to take the intimidation out of reporting excessive force as well as reward good cops for positive interaction. I also contrast the diversity shown in Twitter images from hack-a-thon again the imagery from the Innovation Congress conference and call on conference organizers to address the access issue to their conferences faced by many minorities.   You'll Learn: Good Nations #Hacktheviolence initiative to reduce violence by 40% by 2020. Why the future is bright as we race towards SkyNet. Lol! How the Civility app by Roverlent helps report personal encounters with police and improves police community relations. Why the diversity in the audience at Innovation Congress wasn't reflected in the images that were tweeted out. How conference organizers can partner with organizations like Goodie Nation to bridge this diversity gap.   3 Key Points: Hack-a-thons are not for the faint of heart. Goodie Nation's #Hacktheviolence initiative is using technology to reduce violence. Digital Marketing conferences like Innovation Congress need to do a better job of reflecting the diversity in their audience in the images they tweet out.   Resources Mention:  Civility app by Roverlent Goodie Nation | Hack the Violence Innovation Congress What Diversity in Marketing Jason A Miller?   Killer Resources: Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you?
