We caught up with Roger Mitchell while he was in London, to talk about his new book Sports Perfect Storm: An Industry Now Totally Adrift. Roger describes himself as 'a chartered accountant from Glasgow' who at the end of the 1990s 'made his personal passion for sport a profession' when he became CEO of the Scottish Premier League, giving him a seat at the UEFA table. Now he runs his own boutique investment firm Albachiara, from his home on Lake Como. The venue for the conversation was upstairs at L'Escargot the French restaurant in Greek Street, which is one of the great institutions of Soho. Deaths resulting from interactions with the US criminal legal system are a public health emergency, but the scope of this issue is intentionally ignored by the very systems that are supposed to be tracking these fatalities. We don't know how many people die in custody each year, whether in an encounter with police on the street, during transport, or while in jails, prisons, or detention centers. In order to make a real difference and address this human rights problem, researchers and policy makers need reliable data. Our guest in this episode is one of the authors of Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do About It. Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr is a professor and chair of pathology at the Howard University College of Medicine. He is a forensic pathologist who previously served as the Chief Medical Examiner and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice in Washington DC. —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Deaths in Custody – A Public Health Emergence w/ Dr Roger Mitchell Jr appeared first on KPFA.

With more than 25 years in the game, actor E. Roger Mitchell still gets the same excitement on the set of Tyler Perry's, A Jazzman's Blues as he did when showing up to his first acting job. The seasoned actor shares many laughs and stories with Dr. Christina Greer about his childhood in Miami and his passion for creating Black content with BET. The pair also discuss his love for HBCUs, stage acting, and the power of a good conch salad.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of The Black Futurist podcast, host Bryndan D. Moore is joined by two remarkable individuals who are shedding light on a grave societal matter that demands our attention: Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr. and Dr. Jay Aronson. The pair are focused on quantifying and minimizing deaths that occur within the US criminal legal system—a haunting public health emergency that often remains hidden from public scrutiny. As the authors of the groundbreaking book "Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do about It," and the hosts of the companion podcast "Official Ignorance," (produced by Bryndan D. Moore for Hip Hop Caucus) Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Aronson bring invaluable insights and storytelling to the forefront. Dr. Mitchell, a prominent professor and chair of pathology at the Howard University College of Medicine, along with his extensive experience as a forensic pathologist and former Chief Medical Examiner of Washington, DC, shares his expertise on the profound issue of deaths in custody. Dr. Aronson, founder and director of the Center for Human Rights Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and an esteemed professor in the Department of History, contributes his deep understanding of the complex dynamics between science, law, and social justice. The problem, as discussed in this episode, is staggering: a dire lack of reliable data surrounding deaths that occur during interactions with the criminal legal system, whether in police encounters, during transportation, or within detention facilities. The intentional disregard of this issue by the very institutions tasked with oversight magnifies the urgency for change. Join us as Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Aronson passionately articulate their motivations behind their powerful collaborative project, detailing their practical and attainable solutions for accurate data collection and comprehensive investigation into these tragic incidents. Their compelling insights pave the way for a transformed future—one where transparency, accountability, and human rights take center stage. Stay tuned for the launch of "Official Ignorance" in September 2023, and remember that their book, "Death in Custody," is available now wherever books are sold. #TheBlackFuturist #DCRA #DeathinCustody --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theblackfuturist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theblackfuturist/support

Adam Sol was born in New York, and lived in East Brunswick, New Jersey for a few years, but he thinks of New Fairfield, Connecticut, as where he really grew up. Adam went to Tufts University for undergrad, which included a year at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. It happened to be the 1989-1990 school year, which was pretty momentous for a few reasons. He borrowed a mallet that spring and got my own little chunk of the Berlin Wall, though it doesn't look any different from a normal piece of painted cement. After some wandering, Adam went to Bloomington, Indiana, to get an MFA in Creative Writing under the supervision of David Wojahn, Roger Mitchell, and Yusef Komunyakaa. Took a year off after that, got married, and moved to Cincinnati, where the University of Cincinnati beckoned. There he got a PhD in American Literature. His dissertation was on the “invention of ethnicity” in the novels of some Jewish writers from the early part of the 20th century. While Adam was finishing his coursework for the PhD, his wife Yael Splansky was finishing her rabbinic ordination at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. They moved to Toronto for her first gig at Holy Blossom Temple, and have been there ever since. Read More You can find Adam's books on the ECW Press page and read more about his poetry here. Director: Scott Derrickson Screenwriter: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, Joe Hill (short story The Black Phone) Starring: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies, James Ransom, Miguel Cazarez Mora, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal Runtime: 1 hour 42 minutes Synopsis: After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims. We got the whole Movie Trailer Review gang back together to discuss the latest from director Scott Derrickson, The Black Phone. Blumhouse has been on a bit of a slide with some really questionable films as of late. Their last series of Welcome to the Blumhouse films on Amazon Prime Video were absolutely atrocious. And who could forget what happened when we all got together last time to discuss the travesty that was the Firestarter remake. So coming into The Black Phone, one couldn't blame audiences if they were a little apprehensive. Thankfully, The Black Phone A lot of things work for this movie. First, Scott Derrickson really knows how to capture horror elements in this film. It's a trend across all of his films but it really stands out in this one. The camera angles, sound editing, framing and everything comes together to really draw the audience into the situations in this film. It also helps that the cast is outstanding. Ethan Hawke has been on a tear lately with the characters and range he's been portraying in movies this year. He's perfectly cast as "The Grabber". He does a lot of "eye acting" that pairs very well with the various masks he wears. But it's not just him. This film has a really solid cast of young actors with Mason Thomas and Madeleine McGraw that pair off extremely well with the adults in this film. The Black Phone has a mix of Stranger Things with your typical Horror Thriller that works very well for it. It can be dumb at times and even predictable but it's done in a way that feels like it pays off in the end so the audiences will enjoy it. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD on hope, and why becoming a minister is so important to him ~ "It's not enough for me just to speak to families. It's extremely important for me to be on sides where we can really promote hope in a way that frees people so that we can make the best choices in this city." Roger Mitchell, Jr., MD, Chief Medical Examiner, Washington DC, with host Andy Ockershausen in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen and this is Our Town. I say this from the bottom of my bottom heart, it's so delightful to have Roger Mitchell on Our Town. Do you realize Roger that you are one of the most important persons in the city of Washington? You're the Chief Medical Examiner for the Capitol City of the United States if not the world. What a title. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: Listen, I made it to Our Town and the word on the street is if you can make it to Our Town, then you might very well be an important person. I'm excited about being here, Andy. Andy Ockershausen: This program's so important that we don't have any commercials, but we do have some, but these are people in Our Town but Roger, you have such a career. What you've done is amazing to me because you're a learned man and you paid the price to learn what you're doing. But that is a great title, Chief Medical Examiner. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: Yeah, Chief Medical Examiner. I'm a young chief, too. Andy Ockershausen: I bet you are. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: There's not many young chiefs out here and it's just good. I've been here about five years now. Andy Ockershausen: But you're not a native. You didn't grow up here of course, but you went to Howard University. THE Howard University and New Jersey Medical School - Smart and Lucky Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: I did go to Howard, THE Howard University. Andy Ockershausen: You went to New Jersey for medical, are you from Jersey? Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: I am from Jersey, born and raised. New Jersey Medical School is a state school. It's Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. It's fantastic. Andy Ockershausen: Fabulous institution, Rutgers, too, right? Gotta be smart. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: You gotta be smart or lucky. Andy Ockershausen: It's a tough school. You're both! Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: I think on the bottom of my certificate, it might've said lucky but we won't look at the fine print. Andy Ockershausen: Luck follows speed, Roger. That's something I learned many years ago. You gotta be fast in this world. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: That's it. Andy Ockershausen: But, you have a background in forensic medicine which, to me, is so impressive and you continue to do it today. OJ Trial Takes Forensics to New Level - Mitchell Becomes Interested in Forensics as a High School Junior Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: I started forensics early. You remember the OJ trial, right? Andy Ockershausen: Oh yeah. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: The infamous OJ trial, right? Andy Ockershausen: Oh my, yeah. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: And so, forensics really, in this Country, was catapulted into the forefront. Andy Ockershausen: I believe what you're saying. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: This Country really wasn't thinking about blood stain pattern and proper evidence handling really until the OJ trial. And so, when I was, I think I was in my junior year- Andy Ockershausen: In medical school? Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: No, it was in my junior year of undergrad at Howard University and I was doing- Andy Ockershausen: Our Town. Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD: Washington, D.C., yes, your town. Andy Ockershausen: Great,

Roger Mitchell, the former Chief Executive of the Scottish Premier League, is the feature interview on this week's SB Weekly. An accountant by trade, Roger has held a number of senior roles in a number of sectors, but rose to prominence in the sports industry when he left his job as CFO of EMI Music in Italy to become the inaugural CEO of the SPL in 1998. He spent four-and-a-half years there and was responsible for all administrative, organisational and football issues. He also became a Member of UEFA’s Professional Football Committee. Today, Roger spends his time advising a variety of sport businesses, investing in tech and media start-ups, and is the Chairman of publisher GiveMeSport, a go-to destination for sports news, opinion and features. On the podcast, Roger talks about why GiveMeSport's raison d'être has changed over the years; how start-ups go bad; why the club football elite is only going to get stronger - and at the expense of numerous former club giants; his future ambitions; and how he sees the sports digital landscape evolving.

'Partners in faith', Presbyterian and Roman Catholic congregations working together in Belfast ------------------------ (Archive show from 1993) Dr. William Rutherford (Fitzroy Presbyterian Church, Belfast - since deceased) and Fr. Gerry Reynolds (Clonard Monastery, Belfast), whose two churches have been working together since 1982, discuss the 11 year relationship between their churches. (The interview with author, Roger Mitchell, from England, which we had planned for this slot, has gone irretrievably missing. So, we thought that instead we'd treat you to a wee bit of the original live FM show, from way back in 1993 - when the troubles in Northern Ireland were showing no sign of coming to an end. We've even left in a little sample of the UK Network News from the end of that show, which will give you the authentic flavour of that period - an archive sample of the (originally 1-hour) faith-based radio show from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The original one hour show was produced in 1993, but outdated/irrelevant material has been removed to leave original interview and music - apart from a little bit of UK Network News from June 1993. (Fr. Gerry Reynolds died in November 2015) ------------------------- Produced and presented by Raymond McCullough, with music from: The Electrics, (Scotland, UK) - '2,000 years', () Enya, (Ireland) - 'How can I keep from singing?' (Shepherd Moons) Phil and John, (England, UK) - 'Redemption Song', (Carnival of Clowns) Rodney Cordner and Jean-Pierre Rudolph, (N. Ireland & France) - 'Gift', (Measures & Dreams)
