My guest for this episode is psychologist and psychotherapist Michael Wilson, who joined me to discuss his recent book, Portals into Deep Imagination: Celtic Mythology, Nature's Year, and the Quest for Soul. The book is an anthology of weekly contemplations and practices for spirituality through the lens of psychology, inspired by the culture and mythology of the Celts in Britain and Ireland and their connection with nature. Following the course of the Celtic year (beginning at Samhain), each weekly chapter offers tales and folklore from Celtic mythology, followed by a suggested practice of meditation and contemplation. It explores the metaphor and symbolism contained in these myths and legends and shows how those themes can be used to examine the nature of the human mind and imagination and the relationship between them. In the interview I begin by talking with Mike about his background and how the idea for the book came about. We discuss the structuring of the book around a yearly cycle and then our conversation broadens a little, exploring the importance of connecting with nature and the relationship between folklore, myth, the imagination, dreams and altered states. While many people celebrate Saint Patrick's Day with parades, shamrocks, and green celebrations, the true cultural roots of Ireland reveal something far more mysterious. Beneath the cheerful imagery lies a world filled with spirits, death omens, cursed landscapes, and supernatural creatures that have haunted Irish stories for centuries. We begin by stepping into the ancient spiritual beliefs of the Celtic world. Long before Christianity spread across Ireland, the Celts believed the natural world was alive with unseen forces. Hills, forests, and rivers were thought to be inhabited by supernatural beings known as the Aos Sí—mysterious entities believed to dwell beneath ancient burial mounds. These beings were not harmless fairies but powerful spirits capable of both blessing and cursing those who crossed their paths. Many of these sacred sites still exist across Ireland today, and even in modern times locals often avoid disturbing certain hills or "fairy forts" out of respect—or fear. One of the most chilling figures in Irish folklore is the legendary Banshee, a supernatural woman whose terrifying wail is said to foretell death. According to legend, certain Irish families are watched over by a banshee spirit that appears before tragedy strikes. For generations, people have reported hearing an eerie scream echoing across the countryside in the night, followed soon after by the death of a family member. Whether interpreted as folklore, psychological phenomenon, or paranormal encounter, the banshee remains one of Ireland's most enduring supernatural legends. The episode also explores Ireland's famously haunted locations, including the notorious Leap Castle, often called one of the most haunted castles in the world. Built in the 13th century, Leap Castle carries a brutal history of betrayal and violence. Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported shadow figures, disembodied voices, and the presence of a disturbing entity known simply as "The Elemental." Many believe the dark energy of the castle is tied to the discovery of a hidden dungeon filled with human bones—remnants of a brutal medieval past. We also dive into one of Ireland's most infamous paranormal locations, the ruins of the Montpelier Hill Hell Fire Club overlooking the city of Dublin. This festival eventually evolved into the modern holiday of Halloween, but its origins lie in a deep belief that spirits and supernatural beings could cross freely into the human world during this sacred night. From haunted castles to death omens and shapeshifting spirits, Ireland's folklore continues to captivate believers and skeptics alike. Whether these legends are echoes of ancient spirituality, cultural storytelling, or glimpses into the unexplained, one thing is certain: Ireland remains one of the most mysterious and paranormally rich landscapes on Earth. So this St. Patrick's Day, when the celebrations fade and the night grows quiet, remember that the stories behind the holiday are far older—and far stranger—than most people realize.

Today, I'm talking about the element of fire. This is the third episode in my series on the elements. Last fall, I explored water and wind, what they represent and how to work with them in everyday life. The Element of Fire When I say fire, I mean the flames that warm you, cook your food, clear land, and forge metal. Fire is one of the few elements that feels instantly familiar and deeply mysterious at the same time. You've sat in front of a fire and felt its heat. You've probably stared into the flames and lost track of time, almost like a meditation. That alone tells you something important. For thousands of years, fire has been far more than a tool. It has been treated as a presence, revered as a teacher, and even honored as a deity. Across cultures, fire has been seen as a messenger between worlds, a force that connects the visible and invisible. In classical and esoteric traditions, fire is one of the four primary elements, alongside earth, water, and air. It's associated with energy, passion, illumination, will, creation, destruction, and transformation. More than anything, fire is the element that changes things. Everything that touches fire is altered, and there is no undo button when it comes to flames. That's exactly why mystics, shamans, and alchemists paid such close attention to it. When I talk about fire as a spiritual element, I'm talking about a force that burns away what no longer serves, illuminates what's been hidden, and initiates transformation at a deep level. Fire is never subtle. Fire Across Time and Tradition If you look back through history, fire appears everywhere people were trying to understand life, death, and the unseen world. In ancient Greece, fire was considered a divine substance, famously stolen from the gods by Prometheus and given to humanity. That myth alone tells you how powerful fire was perceived to be. Fire wasn't just heat, it was consciousness, creativity, and civilization itself. In Vedic and yogic traditions, the fire element is called tejas. Tejas represents inner radiance, metabolic energy, and illumination. It's linked not only to digestion of food, but to digestion of experience, what you can process, integrate, and turn into wisdom. In Chinese philosophy, fire is one of five elements and is associated with the heart, joy, vitality, and spirit. When fire is balanced, there's warmth and enthusiasm for life. When it's excessive or depleted, it shows up as burnout, agitation, or a coldness of spirit. Celtic traditions placed fire at the center of seasonal festivals like Beltane and Samhain. Bonfires marked thresholds between worlds, protected communities, and ushered in new cycles. Fire was symbolic and practical. And in homes across the world, the hearth fire was the literal and energetic center of life. It's where food was prepared, stories were told, and decisions were made. The hearth was both sacred and ordinary. When we work with fire today, we're stepping into one of the oldest relationships humans have ever had with an element that could both sustain and destroy them. Fire demands respect and doesn't negotiate. In return, it offers truth by stripping away illusion and getting to the core. Builder, Destroyer, and Catalyst for Change One of the most important things to understand about fire is its dual nature. Fire is both a builder and a destroyer. People usually think of fire's destructive qualities, but destruction is not inherently bad. Fire clears old growth in the forest, so new life can emerge. It purifies, resets, and creates space. In alchemy and mysticism, this dual role is essential. Fire breaks structures down to their core components. From that essential place, something new can be formed. This mirrors an inner process many people experience, especially in midlife and beyond. There's often a moment when what used to work no longer does. Old identities might feel restrictive and old patterns can feel exhausting. Maybe there's an inner fire saying, “This cannot continue.” That inner fire isn't trying to make you uncomfortable, but working to realign you. Fire doesn't consider your comfort zone as it eliminates illusion to reveal the truth. Fire and Spiritual Alchemy In spiritual alchemy, fire is the heat that refines raw material into something clearer and more potent. Alchemists weren't just trying to turn lead into gold. They were working to transform fear, emotion, and confusion into insight and clarity. That doesn't happen without heat. Fire has long been described as a bearer of information, a force that accelerates transformation and amplifies subtle energy. In yogic and Buddhist traditions, balanced inner fire is linked with clear perception and intuitive awareness. You see more clearly. You digest experience instead of storing it as emotional baggage. This is why working with fire can feel clarifying and, at times, uncomfortable. Fire asks simple but powerful questions such as: What's ready to be released? What truth is trying to surface? What no longer fits? If you've ever sat in front of a candle and had an unexpected realization, you already know how fire speaks. The Hearth and Everyday Alchemy For most of human history, the hearth fire represented safety, nourishment, and belonging. In Greek tradition, Hestia was the goddess of the hearth, embodying stillness and presence. In Irish tradition, Brigid carried the triple flame of hearth, forge, and inspiration, overseeing care, craft, and creativity. Cooking over fire is everyday alchemy. Raw ingredients are transformed into nourishment through heat, time, and attention. When you cook with awareness or light a candle with intention, you're already working with fire as an ally. Fire for Manifesting and Divining Fire has also long been used for manifestation and divination. It creates momentum – just think of how a fire spreads so rapidly. Fire also shifts things from one state to another, responding to clarity and sincerity, rather than force or desperation. Across traditions, people burned symbols of what they wanted to release or manifest. Watching something physically transform signals completion to your nervous system. The flames help the body and psyche understand that a shift has occurred. Fire has also been used for divination, especially using a candle. Observing how a flame moves, steadies, flares, or resists lighting has long been a way of engaging intuition. Fire helps you reflect on what's already present rathern than telling you what to do. One of the easiest ways to work with fire is by candle gazing, a practice found in yogic traditions called tratakah. Watching the flame steadies the mind, quiets mental chatter, and brings clarity. A couple of years ago, my friend Krista and I sat in front of a fire. Suddenly she suggested we should “talk to the fire.” I was surprised, and honestly delighted, when I actually heard something. I had been told it takes years of training to speak with the elements. That's no longer true. The energy on earth moves faster now. The veil is thinner. Many people have a higher vibration today. What I heard from the fire was simple and unmistakable: “I am powerful. I am destructive. I am creative. I am transformative. I am beautiful. I am warmth. I am dancing. I am passion.” That sounds exactly like fire, doesn't it? Fire teaches through warmth and light, but also through endings and change. When you work with fire, you're can't control it. You're partnering with a force that knows how to transform everything it touches. You listen, respect, and collaborate. Sometimes, that's exactly the kind of magic you need. On today's episode I am joined by Brianna — known online as The Grey Witch — a Romany witch whose craft is rooted deeply in old-world folk magic, land-based practice, and ancestral tradition. Brianna is one of the most authentic witches I have ever had the honour of speaking with. Her connection to the land is fierce and lifelong, and she approaches every aspect of her craft with honesty, integrity and devotion. She does not shy away from difficult conversations, and her willingness to share even a glimpse into her lineage feels incredibly sacred. We begin by exploring how Brianna was taught witchcraft through her family line, including traditional fortune-telling methods passed down through generations. She speaks about crystal ball reading, divination with playing cards, and the ways her ancestors taught her to see, sense and interpret signs. Brianna also shares stories of how she has supported her community — helping farmers with their crops, performing spellwork for those seeking guidance, and calling upon her spiritual court, including a powerful spirit known as The Rider, who she describes in depth. One of my favourite parts of this conversation was hearing how she works with the sickle as a magical tool, both symbolically and practically. We also explore Brianna's use of animal remains within her craft — a topic she approaches with complete reverence. She works only with animals already sacrificed for food, honouring every part of their body in accordance with ancestral custom. Nothing is taken lightly. Nothing is wasted. Her approach reflects a form of witchcraft that is deeply rooted in reciprocity and respect, far removed from modern farming systems and very aligned with how our ancestors lived in relationship with the land. Another fascinating thread in this episode is how Brianna weaves her Catholic faith through her folk magic. She speaks about saints, spirits and symbols with the same natural ease that many witches speak about herbs or lunar phases. This episode was not easy to record. As I began to speak, the candle beside me went out, and soon after, I became sick for a moment. What unfolded was a deep clearing, a full-body cleanse that mirrored the energy of this moment in time: the thinning of the veil. I share what this season has traditionally meant through Samhain and how I'm experiencing it now, beyond history and tradition, as an invitation into deeper healing and remembrance. Through the lens of Oneness, ancestors, and guides are an extension of One Consciousness - One Player, many characters. With my South Node, Saturn, and Pluto all in Scorpio, this journey into witnessing magic rather than practicing magick is both my personal evolution and part of what I'm here to teach. I reflect on Aleister Crowley's definition of magick, how it differs from true divine magic, and how real magic unfolds when we release control and allow life to reveal itself. I also share a story of profound past-life healing, how timelines folded into the present moment, showing that only now is real. When we stop trying to control through the mind, we can receive the signs and communications from God consciousness that guide our healing. Through that witnessing, distance is created, and identification dissolves. Finally, I speak about the Nordic runes that have woven through my life since becoming pregnant with Lumi, and how the rune Othala, a symbol of ancestry, lineage, home, and inherited gifts, brought this entire episode together.
