Heavily BDSM-themed story. Mibu and Sakurada explore the extreme kinky play together. Mibu wants to take revenge on Sakuada for weakening his kinky side. I felt the story needed more direction. The story is a mixture of erotica and comedy, which didn't craft well in my opinion. This felt like an average story. Some may enjoy it, some may not depending on the reader.    This Manga is available in most bookstores and on Amazon.

Today's episode is a weird one. It's The Power Trip's first solo episode, with Nathan doing more comic book coverage…except it's a manga…about the first Super Sentai…so it's only peripherally related to Power Rangers. Anyway, thanks to Seven Seas Entertainment (who also translated and published the original Kamen Rider manga), Americans can now experience Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, which was created in 1975 by the Jack Kirby of manga, Shotaro Ishinomori. But if you read this graphic novel, be prepared for it to feel more like James Bond than Power Rangers. All the tropes aren't quite there, but it definitely feels like the prototype for both the Sentai and Ranger legacies. Ian speaks with journalist Shea Hennum about their article on #comicsbrokeme, in which workers in the comics industry shared their stories of tight deadlines, unreasonable workloads, and low pay following the death of cartoonist Ian McGinty. For the article, which appeared at solrad.co, they applied an analysis that synthesized communist and anarchist traditions in order to identify a multitude of sites of political struggle, challenge systems of domination and violence, and chart possible ways forward, similar to analysis applied in the movement to abolish the Prison Industrial Complex. They discuss past efforts to organize within the comic book industry as well as current organization efforts, such as the formation of the United Workers of Seven Seas, a union of workers at Seven Seas Entertainment, Comic Book Workers United, a union of workers at Image Comics, and Cartoonist Cooperative, a cohort of cartoonists committed to mutual promotion, skill and info sharing, and efforts to make industry wages and practices more transparent. Season 1 - Episode 8/10 Morgan Watchorn is a manga translator for Seven Seas Entertainment. Titles she's worked on include Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire?, Desire Pandora, and Call to Adventure! Defeating Dungeons with a Skill Board. She chose to talk about the English dub adaptation for the 2005 anime Black Cat, which was translated by Masako Ollivier, then adapted by Andrew Rye and Eric Vale for dubbing. "Completing every job with ruthless accuracy, Train Heartnet is an infamous assassin with no regard for human life. Donning the moniker "Black Cat" in the underground world, the elite killer works for the powerful secret organization known only as Chronos. One gloomy night, the blasé gunman stumbles upon Saya Minatsuki, an enigmatic bounty hunter, and soon develops an odd friendship with her. Influenced by Saya's positive outlook on life, Train begins to rethink his life. Deciding to abandon his role as the Black Cat, he instead opts to head down a virtuous path as an honest bounty hunter. However, Chronos—and particularly Creed Diskenth, Train's possessive underling—is not impressed with Train's sudden change of heart and vows to resort to extreme measures in order to bring back the emissary of bad luck. This assassin turned "stray cat" can only wander so far before the deafening sound of gunfire rings out." Additional Information Anime dubs involve the translator but then a whole bunch of people who are in charge of the dubbing itself. When a voice actor records a voice to a set video, this is called automated dialogue replacement (ADR). The translated script must therefore be adapted for ADR so the lines will match the lip flaps of any on-screen characters. As discussed in the episode, here are the credits for the people involved in the Black Cat anime dub. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. It's a sad day because the sun has to set on the discussion of Danny Archive's favorite light novel franchise. He explores in this episode why this particular franchise is not only important to the past him but why it is important to who he is as an individual now and how he knows it will continue to effect and mold him into the person he wants to be. That isn't to say that he doesn't recognize fault in one of his favorite entries. Danny seeks to explore why the younger him loved volume eleven and why the current him sees fault. It's a perfect evolution of he he is as a reader and who he hopes to be as an author. Beyond that he provides some positive and negatives, but at the end he ranks all of the novels presented on The Broken Shelf for a nice final segment and exit to the series. Like most of the final podcasts this is an emotional one for Danny so come in and reviews one of his favorite franchises with him and hopefully he can get you to read it for yourself. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Seven Seas Entertainment at: https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-light-novel-vol-11/ Original Cover Art owned by Rifujin no Magonote, Shirotaka, KC Fabellon, Seven Seas Entertainment, and Kadokawa INC. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Redeus Greyrat has reach a romantic turning point and Danny can't wait to discuss it. Since the first time he read it, volume ten has always been one of Danny's favorite, but this time he has to turn away his biting nostalgia and critically look at why its one of his favorites. That objective becomes much harder than Danny anticipated. Danny covers why, although narratively still sound, volume eleven suffers from a subpar and frankly random set of circumstances with the pacing. Despite that, however, Danny does gush over why volume ten does so many things right when it comes to character development and world building. There is a lot to unpack, and Danny talks about a few things outside the podcast in regards to The Broken Shelf. Come listen in and figure out why Danny loves this light novel so much. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Seven Seas Entertainment at: https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-light-novel-vol-10/ Original Cover Art owned by Rifujin no Magonote, Shirotaka, KC Fabellon, Seven Seas Entertainment, and Kadokawa INC. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Change. To a reincarnated individual it could be the most terrifying or jubilating form of life. Perhaps that is what the isekai genre is truly about? It's not always about the power fantasy or the harem, but about what certain individuals will do with a dramatic change in environment. However, not all of them attack the personification of second life. Rudy exemplifies that. It's the main reason Danny loves the franchise so much and it's one of the reason he loves this arc. But does it still hold up? Danny goes through one of his favorite light novels in on of his favorite light novel franchises and hopes to explain to himself and to the audience why volume nine is great. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Seven Seas Entertainment at: https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-light-novel-vol-9/ Original Cover Art owned by Rifujin no Magonote, Shirotaka, KC Fabellon, Seven Seas Entertainment, and Kadokawa INC. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The franchise has entered Danny's favorite era. When he reflects and thinks back on his time with this series and what it meant for him it's these next three novels that he thinks about the most. For some the return to the school setting will prove to be detrimental to a series that felt and read like something out of the Japanese cultural norm, but to Danny, and he thinks to a larger audience, that is the exact reason Rifujin makes his franchise so much fun. Volume eight challenges the norm of the light novel industry and because of its unorthodox writing style and attention to nuance and details for character growth and world building, Danny gets to have some fun with exploring what makes this franchise so magical. That isn't to say that there isn't something wrong with it. It's been a while since Danny has read this entry and with a fresh perspective he does see more of its faults. Questions for later because apparently they do and with the harvest theme in full swing it allows the crew to experience a plethora of hot situations and introduce a plethora of interesting new monster girls. Add to the fact that in a rare sense of narrative nuance, the protagonist of a harem genre has to solve a real mystery, win the heart of a fair maiden (and mean it, unlike most schmucks that do it out of principle), and stun the women he loves with a surprise. Danny has a lot to say about this novel, and for once most of it is in the positive. Maybe more so then any others because he was cynical and pessimistic about reading it again. Years before when he first picked the series up to read he wasn't the biggest fan of volume seven and when he read the series again a year later he skipped it. Now he considers himself someone of a different mind and it was only fair to give the volume another chance. But what did that mean? Why didn't he like it? Why did he skip it? How does the him of now find it? All those questions are answered inside the podcast. Danny takes a look at his favorite light novel franchise and analyses why it works, and can only work if you don't skip a volume. Is it metaphorical? Physical? Metaphysical? Maybe more importantly, when does a journey end? Does it end when a new one begins? That's the quandary Danny has to question when reviewing the sixth novel of one of his favorite series. A major arc is ending and a new one is beginning, but what happens at the end that propels the next into existence? Danny looks over Rudy's journey and how volume six reflects on the character and the universe as a whole. He takes a look at the first six novels and how the first major arc ends. Things have been stirring since Souix arrived and it's time for Glenn-sensei to grow into a real boy and act like a real character. Volume six tests Danny in the right ways, and he was incredibly satisfied with the foundation built by Origuchi-sensei, and how the light novel author has grown in his craft. Danny goes into the summary and then into a very light hearted list of positives and negatives. Really, Danny goes on some tangents because Origuchi-sensei does a few things his contemporaries are scared to do - or maybe their editors won't let them do, but that's another discussion entirely. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Father and son. The psychology of the grown man vs. the growing man can sometimes be on of the most childish and immature things in the world, but what happens when one of those individuals is a reincarnated soul? Throw on top of that two missing wives, one missing daughter, and binge drinking because someone can't unsee the death and you have a torrent of emotions. Rudy's journey has change more than just his psychology, because he will have to face the truth and by doing so accept who he has to be and what he wants to become. However, his obstacle is his father. Come listen as Danny documents one of the heaviest books in the series, and discusses what the volume did perfectly and what it did not so well. He also analyzes the psychosis of human change and the dynamic of father and son. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Seven Seas Entertainment at: https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-light-novel-vol-5/ Original Cover Art owned by Rifujin no Magonote, Shirotaka, KC Fabellon, Seven Seas Entertainment, and Kadokawa INC. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The second chance can be one of the most riveting narrative adventures in all of literature, and perhaps each person views and experiences that character's second chance in a different manner but for one Danny Archive this story is personal. Join him as he continues Rudeus Greyrat's journey through a second life and what insanity he has to live through on the demon continent and beyond. Danny, pulling back a little on his gushing respect, manages to put together a fairly even list of positive and negatives and he reflects on his original position on the novel which was at one point more cynical. Danny also discusses some of the translation and pacing problems but dives deep into the most important devices used in the novel: character development. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Most things in life are subjective. How they come across to an audience or specific individual is complicated. It can change, warp, with time. But is that change, whether scorn or endearment, a result of the product or the consumer? Perhaps that question is subjective, too. Regardless, Danny is facing that very question. His love for this specific product is out match by most fictional material. Not many products hold such a place in his heart as this. With that in mind how can someone so clouded review said material? Well, Danny gives it his best and he can only hope that the words on the page still ring true in his heart as they did when he first read them. This is a story about redemption and life, and just because there is magic and reincarnation involved does not make it any less of a moral masterpiece. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud imagery taken from Seven Seas Entertainment at https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/mushoku-tensei-jobless-reincarnation-light-novel-vol-3/ Original Cover Art owned by Rifujin no Magonote, Shirotaka, KC Fabellon, Seven Seas Entertainment, and Kadokawa INC. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The journey of Rudy Greyrat continues and Danny is full of excitement. This is his favorite light novel series and it shows in his overabundance of flare when talking about the plot, the new characters and the amazing development of the protagonist. Like no other light novel has our lead host found such a strong, relatable connection with and he covers it all. To Danny, Rudy is his prime protagonist, a fictional character that made him want to write his own novels with even a splinter of the connection he had with Rudy, and that evolution carries through strongly into the second novel. Not to mention one of the best tsundere's in Japanese fiction. Why does Danny have a strong connection to this narrative? Take a listen and embark on a new adventure in the grand-father of the new age isekai! It took years but Seven Seas Entertainment took the leap of faith and picked up Danny's favorite light novel series for localization. Long nights were spent reading this illustrious series instead of doing homework, but more importantly this series gave Danny the inspiration to start writing. Follow Danny as he covers the impact of the series on global markets, the light novel industry, and why it had such a prolific impact on him as a person. He then follows the introduction with a vivid performance of the summary and then an emotional positive and negative. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. This one confused Danny in a variety of ways. On one side he loves the deep, introspective dive into the psyche of the females, but on the other side the author went further down his delusional troped road. There's also the concerns circling the protagonist and his unwillingness to evolve as the central character, and yet, Danny argues the redundancies and cliches are the fault of the genre and maybe not purposefully the author's error. Regardless, this light novel series continues to make our host think. What makes a great light novel? How should the author have wrote the series? Is it allowed to blossom using projected scenes 'borrowed' from other, better works? Can Danny look passed his stubbornness and give an honest review? The Japanese media has his fuming and gushing all at the same time and it's a delight to listen to. Join as the crew draws ever closer to the big 100! [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Welcome back for more anthropomorphic harem hijinks. This particular series, as described by Danny, has come a long way in only four novels. Despite a few of the draw backs - such as the author's incessant need to wig out over his favorite 'MonMusu' episodes - the light novel made advances in both character development and story telling. Danny highly praises the chance Origuchi-Sensei took in changing the primary perspective from the protagonist to many of the side character for this installment. And continuing with the secondary theme, there was a chain of profound medical questions that ranged from the moral to the philosophical. Fun, ecchi, and, surprisingly, deep. Come here what Danny has to say! [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. Origuchi-Sensei legitimately stuns Danny with his second follow about monster girl hijinks. Testing the boundaries of his setting, and really implementing an organic system of biology and society, the light novel author overhauled the balance of his world, and thereby tested the personality and drive of his central character. He also effectively weaved psychological themes regarding maturity, medicine, and family relations. Danny was thrilled with the passion displayed in every word and it shows in the review. There are still some negatives, and conversely, still themes readily attached to Origuchi-sensei's influences, but overall Danny had a blast reviewing and reading the book. He laughed, teared a little - cause that's how emotional he gets sometimes - and was challenged mentally by the psychology. How high from a dust collector did volume two of this light novel climb? [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. There are times when you suffer for not doing research and Danny paid for such over sight. Needing a new series to start, Danny decided it best to follow his fantasy and purchase a light novel supporting his new favorite genre: monster girls. However, sometimes a seemingly good product goes through anguish because of market pressure. Danny discusses the positives and negatives of the light novel, the art, and how over saturation in one genre can cause deterioration in what would usually be considered a strong homage to the author's influences. Danny took a chance, and had to endure the hardship of said choice. Time Codes: 00:00:28 - Introduction 00:02:35 - September in October 00:04:17 - Vérité #1 00:49:17 - Cutie Honey: The Classic Collection 01:23:32 - Wrap up 01:24:34 - Contact us Shea and Derek are back for their September manga episode. (Yeah, yeah. We know it's the beginning of October, but the guys were a little late getting last month's show recorded.) This time they discuss two intriguing titles, each quite different one from the other. They begin with the inaugural issue of Vérité, a new anthology series out of India featuring classic alternative manga as well as contributions from contemporary Indian artists that have a gekiga feel to them. The guys were glad to see work from Tadao Tsuge, Susumu Katsumata, and Youji Tsuneyama, but they were also taken by fresh Indian voices such as those of Anpu Varkey, Shaunak Samvatsar, Nandita Basu, and Bharath Murthy, Vérité's editor. After that, Shea and Derek discuss Cutie Honey: The Classic Collection, by Go Nagai. This is another one of Seven Seas Entertainment's nice hardbound collections of classic 1970s manga, other titles including Captain Harlockand Devilman. The guys emphasize Cutie Honeyas a representative kind of shonen manga for its time, but they spend most of the time discussing the, at times discomforting, sexual or erotic nature of Go Nagai's creation. What was written for a particular audience back in the 1970s may come across as gratuitous or even offensive to more contemporary readers. But both Derek and Shea point out that, despite the erotic weirdness apparent at times, the story is engaging and worth revisiting.

Time Codes: 00:00:27 - Introduction 00:03:34 - Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection, Vol 1 00:42:39 - Slum Wolf 01:14:09 - Wrap up 01:15:17 - Contact us This month Shea and Derek discuss two great works that bring back some older, or classic, manga. They begin with Leiji Matsumoto's Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection, Vol 1 (Seven Seas Entertainment), a series that originally ran between 1977 and 1979. Captain Harlockis a classic science fiction work, and with a space pirate protagonist who can be seen as a romantic hero. The Two Guys discuss the figure of Harlock as a curious mixture, while at the same time trying to ferret out the his philosophy. In many ways, they see this manga anchored in its time, both aesthetically and politically. But this work definitely isn't limited to it's time and can be appreciated today. Next they turn to Slum Wolf, another translated collection from Tadao Tsuge (New York Review Comics). An earlier collection of Tsuge's work, Trash Market, was released in 2015 by Drawn and Quarterly (which the guys reviewed on their June 2015 episode). Slum Wolfis a collection of nine stories originally published between 1969 and 1978 in various publications such as Garo and Yagyō. It also includes an essay by Tsuge, as well as a outstanding contextual essay by Ryan Holmberg, who also edited and translated the collection. The guys discuss all the stories, to greater or lesser degrees of depth, but they spend most of their time talking about the linking features that bind most of the narratives. As both Derek and Shea point out, this is one of the manga highlights of the year, so far.

Covers Claudine by Riyoko Ikeda (it’s only one volume long!) Though Riyoko Ikeda’s classic manga featuring a transgender protagonist originally came out in 1978, it was officially released for the first time in the US in the summer of 2018 (40 YEARS LATER!). S&T host Ashley asks Jocelyne Allen, the translator of Claudine (and many other manga), about the use of gender pronouns and other translation challenges with this work that's set in early 1900s France, originally published in 1970s Japan, now being translated for late 2010s America. Plus, Jocelyne and Ashley walk through Claudine’s three romances, ponder if queerness coupled with tragedy are implied to be cyclical, and take a gender quiz that begs the question: Could Claudine be a mech? LINKS Claudine is available in English from Seven Seas Entertainment Riyoko Ikeda is most well-known for The Rose of Versailles, which was licensed in America by Udon Entertainment in 2015 but as of the release of this podcast, has not been released. They begin with Nagata Kabi's My Solo Exchange Diary, Vol. 1 (Seven Seas Entertainment). This is the follow-up to her previous autobiographical work My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, a text the guys discussed last year. Whereas the earlier work was more targeted to a particular experience, the first volume of Kabi's Solo Exchange Diary is broader in scope and chronicles a variety her life phenomena. Both Shea and Derek are fascinated by this project, especially given the diary's structure and the creator's conversations with herself. Next, the Two Guys check out the first volume of Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka's Grand Blue Dreaming (Kodansha Comics). The premise of this series is based on a young man going off to college and expecting to have the usual college experiences. What he finds instead is a wild world of drunken and naked partying, all generated by the men of the local Diving Club. Both Derek and Shea find this title quite different from their usual reading, and they didn't expect the wildness, and the weirdness, embedded within. If you're looking for a manga about heavy drinking and naked game play, then Grand Blue Dreamingis for you.

Disclaimer: neither of us have read much of the manga, so this is a very cold reaction. Maybe better that way, yeah? Enjoy the show!  Both shows will be available for streaming on Crunchyroll soon. The Ancient Magus' Bride is also being printed in the US by Seven Seas Entertainment.  Enjoy the show!
