Entering into "messy" conversations with our kids can feel scary. We want to say all the "right" things, and we want to be able to answer any questions they might have. The reality is that we rarely feel prepared! That is why we are SO excited to tell you about a resource from our church called "Walking Together!" Walking Together is a book collection designed to help elementary-aged children process common yet difficult topics alongside their parents. We have loved hearing how this collection has already been impactful to families. Today we thought it would be a great opportunity for you to hear about how these books visually have come to life! So today, we sat down with author Katie Robinson and illustrator Samantha Slezak to talk about art, gifting, and the creative process. Katie and Samantha are two different generations of women who have been shaped by our church, and today we get to hear how they are using their giftings to encourage others in their walks with God. You can learn more at www.portcity.church/walkingtogether!

For many of us, our feminine qualities and energy are not the tools we think we serve us when we're feeling lost, frightened, isolated or out of control. Yet, Tatiana Slezak, Bioresonance Practitioner and author of 'How to Get Out of the Fog', explains that they're surprisingly powerful parts of us that can guide us through the fog when we tune into them, trust them, and allow them to be expressed. Tatiana grew up in Poland and migrated to Australia 15 years ago. She shares about how her upbringing and move across the world to a different culture has allowed her to appreciate the value of the feminine as an important element of self discipline and turn on. Tune in to hear us discuss: What it is to feel turned on What fog means in her book 'How to Get Out of the Fog' How addiction suppresses the feminine What you discover when you change yourself instead of trying to change others What opens up with challenge and breakdown Why hitting rockbottom is a blessing The impact of choices and appreciation Differences in culture and the expression of the feminine How following your intuition is efficient The power of energy and frequency in our body What Bioresonance is and how it works The popularity of Bioresonance in Poland You can connect with Tatiana via: Instagram @iamtatianaslezak https://tatianaslezak.com/ Or download her book on the website: https://howtogetoutofthefog.com/

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.07.507027v1?rss=1 Authors: Pandiyan, V. P., Schleufer, S., Slezak, E., Fong, J., Upadhyay, R., Roorda, A., Ng, R., Sabesan, R. Abstract: Light propagation in photoreceptor outer segments is affected by photopigment absorption and the phototransduction amplification cascade. Photopigment absorption has been studied using retinal densitometry, while recently, optoretinography (ORG) has provided an avenue to probe changes in outer segment optical path length due to phototransduction. With adaptive optics (AO), both densitometry and ORG have been used for cone spectral classification, based on the differential bleaching signatures of the three cone types. Here, we characterize cone classification by ORG, implemented in an AO line-scan OCT and compare it against densitometry. The cone mosaics of five color normal subjects were classified using ORG showing high probability (~0.99), low error ( less than 0.22%), high test-retest reliability (~97%) and short imaging durations ( less than 1 hour). Of these, the cone spectral assignments in two subjects were compared against AOSLO densitometry. High agreement (mean: 91%) was observed between the two modalities in these 2 subjects, with measurements conducted 6-7 years apart. Overall, ORG benefits from higher sensitivity and dynamic range to probe cone photopigments compared to densitometry, and thus provides greater fidelity for cone spectral classification. Palestine Remembered speaks to Associate Professor Peter Slezak about his journey within the Jewish community and advocacy for Palestine, followed by our analysis of the Trump/Netanyahu press conference, where Trump befuddles Netanyahu with a suggestion of a one state solution
Slezak's international career commenced in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he sang Siegfried (a punishing role that he would soon drop from his repertoire) and Lohengrin in 1900. (He would return to Covent Garden in 1909 after undertaking further vocal studies in Paris the previous year with a great tenor of a previous era, Jean de Reszke.) Slezak secured a three-year contract with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1909. Met audiences acclaimed him in performances of works by Wagner and Verdi. Along with Italy's Giovanni Zenatello, he became the most famous Otello of his generation, famously performing the role at the Met with Arturo Toscanini conducting. He was a convivial person, and many anecdotes reveal his amiable sense of humour. The best-known example is as follows: during a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin, a stage hand sent the swan out too early, before the tenor could hop aboard. Seeing his feathered transportation disappear into the wings, Slezak ad-libbed to the audience: "Wann fährt der nächste Schwan?" ("When does the next swan leave?"). Slezak had a versatile repertory which embraced 66 roles. They included notably Rossini's Guillaume Tell, Manrico, Radames, Walter, Tannhäuser, Hermann and, as we have seen, Otello and Lohengrin. He sang 44 roles in Vienna alone, where he chalked up 936 appearances in 1901-12 and 1917–27 and became an idol of audiences. Dame Blanche,Euryanthe,Queen of Sheba
Where Did You Come From? (December 26, 2015) “Where Did You Come From?” is the title of the first track on Suz Slezak’s newest album, a collection of lullabies called Watching the Nighttime Come. Slezak and David Wax, both members of Mexo-Americana band David Wax Museum, perform live in the studio—and share some challenges and triumphs of taking their baby on the road. And: In their book Balancing the Big Stuff: Finding Happiness in Work, Family and Life, Miriam Liss and Holly Schiffrin (University of Mary Washington) find that “having it all” isn’t a matter of having more, but achieving a balance in life. They dissect the myths of helicopter parenting and gender issues to give concrete steps toward reaching harmony among our roles in life. Miriam Liss is a recipient of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award. Later in the show: Adoption in America With the success of TV shows like Modern Family and Parenthood, it’s clear that the way Americans think of family is starting to change. Yet Linda Seligmann (George Mason University) says for trans-racial and trans-national adoptions there are still many cultural barriers. And: Carmen Balogh talks about what it was like growing up in a blended family. Plus: Forgiving others is hard, but forgiving ourselves is harder. Everett Worthington (Virginia Commonwealth University) learned this painful lesson after his brother committed suicide in 2005. One of the country’s foremost experts in the study of forgiveness, Worthington tackles the subject in his upcoming book Moving Forward: Six Steps to Forgiving Yourself and Breaking Free from the Past.

“Where Did You Come From?” is the title of the first track on Suz Slezak’s upcoming collection of lullabies Watching the Nighttime Come. Slezak and David Wax, both members of Mexo-Americana band David Wax Museum, perform live in the studio—and share some challenges and triumphs of taking their baby on the road. And: In their new book Balancing the Big Stuff: Finding Happiness in Work, Family and Life, Miriam Liss and Holly Schiffrin find that “having it all” isn’t a matter of having more, but achieving a balance in life. They dissect the myths of helicopter parenting and gender issues to give concrete steps toward reaching harmony among our roles in life. Later in the show: With the success of TV shows like Modern Family and Parenthood, it’s clear that the way Americans think of family is starting to change. Yet Linda Seligmann says for trans-racial and trans-national adoptions there are still many cultural barriers. And: Carmen Balogh talks about what it was like growing up in a blended family. Plus: Forgiving others is hard, but forgiving ourselves is harder. Everett Worthington learned this painful lesson after his brother committed suicide in 2005. One of the country’s foremost experts in the study of forgiveness, Worthington tackles the subject in his upcoming book Moving Forward: Six Steps to Forgiving Yourself and Breaking Free from the Past.
