“Wisdom is not just about knowledge. Wisdom adds to knowledge with discernment, with understanding, with a moral sense of what's right and wrong.” We live in a time of overflowing and interweaving crises. A global pandemic exacerbates a mental health crisis caused social media technology. The upheaval of American electoral politics caused by an erosion (or breakdown?) of social and relational trust. The rise of nationalism, the proliferation of war, and longing for justice in the realms of gender and race. Underneath it all appears to be a crisis of knowledge and its convergence around skepticism of science, a culture of suspicion, and confusion about basic factual information, let alone right and wrong. We need wisdom. Badly. But in times of crisis and chaos, where are we to turn for wisdom? In this episode Mark Labberton is joined by longtime friend Francis Collins, physician, researcher, and former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Known for his leadership in mapping the human genome, his public service at the NIH spanned three presidencies and culminated with overseeing the national response to Covid-19 pandemic. The author of many books, including his bestselling The Language of God, Collins's new book is *The Road to Wisdom: On Truth, Science, Faith, and Trust,* a reflection on the crisis of truth, science, faith, and trust, and how the exhausted middle might chart a path toward a better future. About Francis Collins Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, is the former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As the longest serving director of NIH—spanning twelve years and three presidencies—he oversaw the work of the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world, from basic to clinical research. Collins is a physician-geneticist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the international Human Genome Project, which culminated in April 2003 with the completion of a finished sequence of the human DNA instruction book. He served as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH from 1993 to 2008. Collins's research laboratory has discovered a number of important genes, including those responsible for cystic fibrosis, neurofibromatosis, Huntington's disease, a familial endocrine cancer syndrome, and most recently, genes for type 2 diabetes, and the gene that causes Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, a rare condition that causes premature aging. Collins received a BS in chemistry from the University of Virginia, a PhD in physical chemistry from Yale University, and an MD with honours from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to coming to the NIH in 1993, he spent nine years on the faculty of the University of Michigan, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. Collins was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2007 and the National Medal of Science in 2009. If God is universal, can we contend for a theology of God that transcends culture? However, Kant said that "History is a result of the varieties of human natures and circumstances," and throughout history man has imposed an idea of God that caters to his privileges, context and goals. Muta Baruka said that God is a human creation, meaning that the way we understand God is the way human have determined that we see God, stroking human egos. Yet, Paul Tillich declared that God is man's ultimate concern and possess that internal drive which predisposes him to a reality of God that is deep which has always escaped him so that we live our lives pursuing the existence of God through worship, faith or some transcendental experience. Just as human drives lead him/her to contend with the truth of his own existence within multiple realities of time and space which extends beyond the world, he/she finds himself/herself in the outer space. Human beings are always working to discover something beyond themselves, either within or without and find themselves travelling as far as to the Moon in hopes of finding truth that extends from the limitations of life on earth or within his personal domains. Yet Descartes philosophizes that what we know for certain is not beyond the subjective. Nevertheless, Man has imposed a reality of God that is universal and objective in the hopes of advancing a life that places him or her above the rest. We say that life is about people and how they relate. Yet, life is what people make of it and human tendencies to promote self has created dynamics couched in the universal creation of a God that exceptionalizes his personal experiences and cultures and go as far as to discredit other ideas and perspectives of God that competes with his position and place in life. This has led to the Conquests and crusades and the destruction of cultures where some with a westernize theology of God created a New World in the eyes of their perspectives. The Europeans went to Africa and the Caribbean to Spread religion in the name of a God to spread religion, a particular way of life and to take away the prospects of others which they justify in that same faith thy have come to promote. Discrediting those who have found God for themselves. Walter Rodney wrote how Europe underdeveloped Africa, yet Europeans justify their efforts based in a Theology that is exceptional and one that promotes their cultures and ways over others. Economics. Economics can be both a tool of the internal and external subversive. For the external subversive, simply cutting off credit can cause severe economic problems for a country. An example of this is the United States' relations with Chile in the early 1970s. In an attempt to get Salvador Allende removed from office, the United States tried to weaken the Chilean economy. Chile received little foreign investments and the loss of credit prevented Chile from purchasing vital imports. Economic pressure of this kind prevents an economy from functioning and reduces a country's standard of living. If the reduction is too great, the people may become willing to support a change in the government's leadership. The main objective of economic pressures is to make it difficult for the country to fulfill its basic obligations to the citizenry either by cutting off trade or by depriving it of resources. The internal subversive can also use economics to put pressure on the government through use of the strike. An example of this is the Chilean Truckers' Strike during the 1970s. The strike prevented the transport of food staples and forced nearly 50% of the national economy to cease production. Activities of these kinds create human, economic, and political problems that, if not addressed, can challenge the competency of the government. Agitation and civil unrest. As defined by Laurence Beilenson, agitation is "subversive propaganda by action such as mass demonstrations or the political strike, that is, a strike not intended to benefit the union or workers in the ordinary sense, but intended instead against the government." Furthermore, propaganda and agitation, even when they are legal forms of freedom of speech, press, and assembly can still be classified as subversive activity. These tools further demonstrate the need to determine intent of those taking action to identify subversive activities. Civil unrest creates many of the problems that an insurgency campaign does. First of all it is an affront to government authority, and if the government is unable to quell the unrest it leads to an erosion of state power. This loss of power stems from the people's lack of trust in the government to maintain law and order. In turn, the people begin to question whether or not new leadership is needed. Discrediting, disarming, and demoralizing the government is the goal of these activities and the cause of the government's loss of power. Civil unrest depletes resources as the government is forced to spend more money on additional police. Additionally, civil unrest may be used to provoke a response from the government. In the 1940s, during strikes against the Marshall Plan, communists in France would "deliberately provoke the police and gendarmerie into acts of repressive violence in order to exploit the resulting 'martyrs to the cause' for propaganda purposes." These martyrs and subsequent propaganda can be useful in turning political and social groups against each other. In this episode, we took a look at how the Russian government and its media networks used their power and reach to discredit Covid vaccines made by Western companies and how it boosted its own Sputnik V Covid jab -- and how this might backfire. Experts say that attributing anonymous or obfuscated social media profiles is tricky, but they tend to be remarkably consistent and align with the goal of promoting Sputnik V at the expense of Western, but not Chinese vaccines. We talked to Seb Cubbon, a research analyst at First Draft (one of their reports here), Miriam Matthews, senior behavioral and social scientist at RAND, Olga Dobrovidova, a Russian science journalist, Bret Schafer from the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), Peter Stano, lead spokesperson at the European External Action Service, which is the EU's diplomatic service, and Peter Balasz, a former diplomat and professor emeritus, Central European University. In his last public speech, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, a misnomer to start with ‘cause it gives the feel of a U.N. like organization, was nervous. His face did not reveal the full extent of his anxiety nor did his voice divulge his true anger. To blur the issues, his office was arranged such as only the Lebanese flag stood behind him. He raised his finger twice or thrice and made fun of it as to decrease the tension with his viewers. His, was an address to almost 2 million Lebanese who descended onto the streets from all major cities and towns of Lebanon demanding the end to a corrupt, inept, and untrustworthy political class. Starting with a government made up of sectarian appointees and cronies, who as one of their members stated, had the audacity to ask people to pay taxes even if such taxes were squandered! However, the government-sanctioned corruption and the ‘Ebola of bribes' which has ravaged all echelons of Lebanon's body politic is but one part of the Iceberg against which the Lebanese Titanic has collided. Saying that should not take our sights away from the apparent component of the Iceberg. That part is the one that appears to the naked eye, that stares its victims in the face, and rubs their noses in the dirt. That part is comprised of the political class which includes the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, several former ministers and high-ranking civil servants, and their entourage of shadowy and questionable business partners. These partners constitute the effective channel through which the politicos conduct their organized theft of the public coffers. Such theft comes in the form of rigged public contracts, lease or sale of State assets, procurement of fuel and other energy supplies, and the usual racketeering from the mobile cellular services, the Casino's gaming and gambling revenues, proceeds from the tobacco monopoly and tens of other government sources. Attacking this political class is legitimate, justifiable and a civic duty to all those citizens who have been deprived of their savings and more so, of their hope for a normalized State after 15 years of civil war and another 15 of turmoil. Discrediting this political class is the easiest part of this revolt. The other part of the Iceberg, its core base, is much more tenuous and harder to dislodge. That component is made up of Hezbollah, an Iranian-trained, backed, and financed militia that takes its order from the Mullahs in Tehran and its marching orders from Qassim Sulaimani, not the Lebanese people. A fall of the current Lebanese government would be a deadly blow to Hezbollah as it would lose the screen through which it operates. The decoy of the official State and institutions is a much-needed cover for this US-labeled terror group accused of narco-trafficking and money-laundering on a global scale. This group cannot deal with the international institutions that Lebanon needs urgently such as the U.N., IMF, World Bank and the EU, as well as, with regional powers such as Egypt, and the GCC countries. The so-called ‘protector' of Lebanon has finally become its tormentor. Hezbollah is at an impasse and not the youth in the streets of Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli, Tyre and other cities and towns. It could support the current government and lose its reputational credit with a crippled economy and a discredited government, or it could find a half-way solution. The half-way solution would be to get rid of the political class -in its entirety- and bring on a new team of decent, proficient, and national figures with no ties to the sectarian parties of Lebanon. This would get the country back on its feet, and the issue of Iranian influence in Lebanon onto the back burner till a compromise between the US administration and Iran is reached in the coming years. In the meantime, the patient namely, Lebanon would be out of the ICU and onto a slow but hopeful recovery. When the economy is nursed back into normalcy,
