'He was a shiftless person, roving and maggotty-headed, and sometimes a little better than crazed. And being exceedingly credulous would stuff his many letters with fooleries and misinformations which sometimes would guide him into paths of error.' - Anthony Wood on John Aubrey 31st August 1667 Books: Brief Lives (edited by Richard Barber) and John Aubrey My Own Life by Ruth Scurr. It has been a strange year that has me thinking a lot of the troubles of the 17th century. A hero flittered through life in this time, always taken away from his passions by war, plague and the shiny objects and interesting people he desperately tried to make sense of. A magpie of knowledge with a brain to match, I have a huge affection for Mr John Aubrey, his scattered notes and collections make all our lives richer for his endeavours. It has been a while since I updated the Z List Dead List. I would be very grateful if you enjoyed this if you could share it with like minded folks. Leaving a review also helps out. 2-Minute Tip: Tell a Story to Add Value When presenting, we are often selling something. It may be a product, a service, or an idea. To be effective, though, don't just go through a barrage of features or details. It's the story that you can connect with your topic that gives it value. It's the story you tell that your audience will respond to and remember. It's the story you tell that makes your subject rise above the fray. Post Tip Discussion: Meet Iszi Lawrence The human brain is designed to listen to voices and designed to understand stories. -- Iszi Lawrence Iszi Lawrence is a British comedian, podcaster, presenter, radio personality, and public speaking coach. She has more than a decade of experience talking in places from nightclubs to boardroom to the Oxford Union to the Tedx stage in Southhampton. You can learn more about Iszi by visiting Iszi.com. I met Iszi through a Facebook discussion group. We had a wide ranging conversation about the comedy and speaking scenes in the UK, the value of human conversation, the differences in how aspiring male and female students tend to approach speaking, and the importance of acknowledging awkwardness. Iszi answers the question few speakers ask: What do you do when Sir Ben Kingsley eats into your time? We talked about a variety of websites and projects. What happens if you are outshone by your contemporaries. While Thomas Paine was busy changing the world, another man, also called Thomas was trying to do the same. Both men believed in Liberty at a time of American rebellion and guillotines in France. Merry new year to one and all! For our first episode of 2018 we've donned berets, waxed our beards and grabbed the nearest set of tom-toms to share stories of the worst poets in history. Naturally, the king of bad poetry William McGonagall is heavily featured, but we also meet a the Canadian James McIntyre who was quite unreasonably obsessed with cheese and Theophilus Marzials, a man who heard about onomatopoeia once and clearly thought it was the only thing that ever mattered in poetry. We are joined by the erudite Iszi Lawrence - host of the tremendous Z List Dead List podcast and owner of her own tame poet, the marvellous Mr A F Harold. The title of Sex God gets bandied around quite a bit these days, as Carrie Quinlain knows all too well. But there can only be one true sex god. How he got to be a god is a little more disturbing.
