We trace why the scrolls became the object of a long international struggle, what they actually say, and what they reveal about the roots of the Bible, Christianity, and modern Judaism. Today is another example of why I love podcasting: it gives me opportunities to have conversations with amazing people. Then I get to share those conversations with you! In the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, I listened to a lot of contemporary Christian music, otherwise known as CCM. If you remember back in the days before streaming took over the world, we had these little things called “liner notes,” which contained the songs, lyrics, musicians, and others involved in the making of an album. One of the names I regularly saw was Jimmy Abegg, also known as Jimmy A. He was not only active as a musician on many albums, but also as a photographer who took photographs for many contemporary Christian music album covers. For those of you familiar with CCM, you might recognize Jimmy from his days as the guitar player in the Charlie Peacock trio, as well as one of the players in Rich Mullins' Ragamuffins. Today I get to bring you a conversation with Mr. Abegg, and I hope that it will inspire you as it did me! Here's a snippet of Jimmy's bio from his website: “In 1989, a career in music led me and my young family to Nashville, Tennessee. Today, we still call Nashville home and I am proud to say that the years have been generous and full. I have been given so many opportunities to provide for my family and care for others while creating things I love. Be it, playing music on the road, recording in the studio, making fine art, showing in galleries, designing record packaging, photographing musicians, writing music, or mentoring others on all of the above; my life of creativity has explored many mediums. Whether abstract or figurative, my painting continues the tendency towards curiosity, whimsy and simple beauty, with a healthy dose of train-hopping, carefree adventure.” Jimmy suffers from macular degeneration, which has taken away the majority of his sight, but he still makes art and music. Interestingly, he says that some of his favorite pieces have been created during this period of his life. In this conversation, Jimmy and I talk about songwriting, collaboration, artwork, and creative habits, among other topics. One of my favorite quotes from this conversation is when Jimmy gave advice for people trying to figure out their path in life. He said, “Try to quit what you're doing. If you can't stop, maybe you should be doing that.” I also want to give a shout-out to the kind and generous Cindy Morgan, who thoughtfully connected me with Jimmy! * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. As we've seen on this podcast, there can be some serious consequences to playing in the mountains. But one thing that seems to stay consistent, is that no matter how traumatic the injury, how devastating the loss, we are always finding our way back to the mountains. Why is that? What calls us back to the activity and environment that caused the pain in the first place? Our guest today is Steph Abegg. Climber—Photographer—Adventurer— and Math&Data Nerd. For as long as she can remember, she has been triply afflicted with an insatiable thirst for adventure, a persistent awe of the natural world, and a need to document the world around her. During her years of adventure and alpine climbing Steph witnessed a major accident and  sustained two major injuries herself that would have completely sidelined most athletes. But for her, not climbing, not being in the mountains just simply wasn't an option. As she puts it, The Mountains are in my Blood…In our conversation we dive deep into Steph's past, chat about three major accidents, discuss her recent move to Estes Park, and finally we cover her website where she has meticulously documented over 750 routes with trip reports, photos, and route overlays. Please rate, review the show, and share this podcast with your friends. Abstract: The ability to form precise, episodic memories develops with age, with young children only able to form gist-like memories that lack precision. The cellular and molecular events in the developing hippocampus that underlie the emergence of precise, episodic-like memory formation are unclear. In mice, the absence of a competitive neuronal engram allocation process in the immature hippocampus precluded the formation of sparse engrams and precise memories until the fourth postnatal week, when inhibitory circuits in the hippocampus mature. This age-dependent shift in precision of episodic-like memories involved the functional maturation of parvalbumin-expressing interneurons in subfield CA1 by extracellular perineuronal nets which is necessary and sufficient for the onset of competitive neuronal allocation, sparse engram formation, and memory precision.

Wait – what?!

Welcome to Lady Startup the show that’s all about helping you understand what it takes to build a business from scratch. Rachel Corbett's guest today is one half of the fashion label, Spell & The Gypsy, Lizzy Abegg.   Lizzy’s sister Isabella (Spelly) was living in Byron selling her jewellery at the local markets and working part-time to cover the rest of her living costs. Down south in Sydney, Lizzy was working in a job she wasn't passionate about so after going through a tough break up she realised she needed a change.  In a moment of inspiration, while on the Bondi to Bronte walk, Lizzy called her sister to ask if she wanted a business partner. Next thing she knew she was packing up her life and moving to Byron where Spelly gave her half the business and they started to build the Spell & The Gypsy brand together. Spelly focused on design while Lizzy turned her attention to building the brand as well as their social media presence (which is now pretty significant).    So how did they go from a market stall that wasn’t even covering the cost of a couple of rolls of toilet paper to an international brand with celebrity fans like Sienna Miller and Vanessa Hudgens? Lets find out Listen to find out... 8 years ago, Lizzy Abegg had an epiphany that she needed to move to Byron Bay to help her little sister grow a struggling jewelry business. Well, that business is now called Spell & the Gypsy Collective ...  and it's a multi-million dollar fashion empire. “Spell and the what?!” I hear you say. Spell & the Gypsy Collective is a Byron Bay fashion label with a cult-like following. The label began when Lizzy's little sister Isabella (whose childhood nickname was Spell) started selling her handmade jewellery at Byron Bay's local markets. Before too long Lizzy had an epiphany that she needed to be in Byron Bay with her sister, so left her Bondi Beach home and career as a film editor to become Spell's business partner. From there the label has expanded into fashion, accessories and homewares … and they recently won the overall national Telstra Business Award (against some pretty bloody tough competition). Spell is now consistently doing over a million dollars a month, has 660,000 Instagram followers, and a flagship store frequented by celebs from around the world. It's also a shining example of entrepreneurship and business passion in the notoriously tough and highly competitive fashion industry. We cover a lot of ground in this chat … from the early days of Spell, to the importance of authenticity, to why we should avoid perfection, to some critical factors in ensuring your marketing actually delivers. Plus I share some feedback from a listener who's taking action after tuning in to their favourite marketing podcast ;00, and I share three live events that you should consider attending (well, two actually, the first one is invite only and all invites are gone). That said, I'll be doing a n epsidoe from it with all the key learnings. Yep, another big show. Small Images - Lizzy's rule of designing for the mobile screen first is critical if you want your marketing images to work - this applies to logos, taglines, photos, social media posts …. Everything! Perfection (or lack of it!) - I love the fact that the brand has multiple versions of its name (Spell and the Gypsy Collective, Spell, Spell Designs) - whilst not ideal, it hasn't affected them growing a multi-million dollar empire. So, if you're waiting for everything to be perfect before you make your next move then you may be waiting a long time! Instead, take a leaf out of Lizzy's approach!OVER TO YOU … What was your biggest marketing learning or ah-ha moment from this episode? Leave your comment below. Isaiah 53:11 (from the King James Bible)“He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”From The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible (from The Great Isaiah Scroll of Qumran) verse 11 translates as follows:“Of the suffering of his soul he will see light and he will find satisfaction. And through his knowledge his servant, the righteous one will make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities” (The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, by Abegg, Flint and Ulrich, p. 360; Harper Collins Publishers, New York, N.Y.:1999).Note (he will see light) is missing in the Masoretic text (The text of which many translations of the ‘Old Testament' is based.Lets look at what the Septuagint (LXX) translation of this verse says:“The Lord also is pleased to take away from the travail of his soul, to shew him light, and to form him with understanding; to justify the just one who serves many well; and he shall bear their sins.”Reading here from the common text projectA rendering similar to ‘he will see light' is recommended where MT has ‘he will see.' The word אור ‘light' is attested in three Qumran scrolls, 1QIsaa, 1QIsab, and 4QIsad, and ‘light' (φῶς) is likewise found in the Septuagint. The Qumran evidence is particularly significant, since 1QIsab differs from MT in relatively few places, so few that it exemplifies the proto-MT or early rabbinic text. Thus we have agreement between proto-MT and the Hebrew behind the Septuagint, not to mention the other two scrolls. If we accept יראה אור ‘he will see light' as original, an explanation of why some manuscripts lack the word אור suggests itself. Due to the visual similarity of יראה and אור, a scribe could have written יראה then glanced back to the wrong place in the exemplar, mistaking אור for the word just copied, and thus omitted אור by accident. What is this telling us?Of the suffering of his soul he will see light and he will find satisfactionBy His Father's Spirit, Messiah Yahushua came out of the darkness of the grave and into the marvelous light of His Father's esteem. Messiah is our example in EVERY way. Messiah is the Passover Lamb, and as Moses led the children of Israel out of the darkness of Egypt, and into the light of a new Master, he is also typified in Yahushua as He lead us out of the dark grave of Egypt and into the light of His Kingdom. The death of Messiah the Lamb of Elohim, caused the angel of death to Passover us, and the resurrection of Messiah allowed us to Passover into the kingdom of light and in a properly restored order and fellowship with His Father.Leviticus 23:10 “Speak to the children of Yisra'ĕl, and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest.Exodus 23:19a says, “Bring the first of the first-fruits of your land into the House of Yahuweh your Elohim.”First is reshiyth – (Genesis – Bereshith) According to the TWOT it means first, beginning, choicest, first/best of a group. e primary meaning is first or beginning of a series.First-fruits is bikkurim meaning (per Strong's): the first-fruits of the crop. From bakar: to bear new fruit, to constitute as first-born. A primitive root; properly, to burst the wombWhat is waved by the priest is an omer (sheaf) (1/10) of an ephah of the first of the first-fruits (of the barley)Colossians 1:9-20 ISR

Works for piano by Schumann performed by Paavali Jumppanen on May 4, 2014 and November 30, 2014.Robert Schumann: Variations on the name "Abegg" in F Major, Op. 1Schumann: Sonata in F-sharp Minor Op. 11This podcast comes courtesy of several musical personas. Not just Schumann, the composer of both the works, but also his alter egos – Florestan and Eusebius – the characters he used to personify different aspects of his artistic disposition. It was under these names, not his own, that Schumann published his first piano sonata—the “Grosse Sonate” in F-sharp minor, opus 11.Before the sonata, we’ll hear a shorter showstopper, also by Schumann: Variations on “Abegg,” Schumann’s opus 1, the first piece he ever published. The dedication is to another of Schumann’s fictional friends—the countess Pauline of Abegg, a character likely inspired by Schumann’s childhood friend Meta von Abegg. The piece takes its namesake quite literally, building on a theme using the notes A-B-flat-E-G-G—spelling out the name “Abegg” in the notes. Those five notes are a starting point for a series of variations that are alternately dazzling and lyrical. Both pieces were performed at the Gardner by pianist Paavali Jumppanen. We begin with the Abegg Variations.

Works for solo piano performed by pianist George Li.Schubert-Liszt: Ständchen von ShakespeareSchumann: Abegg Variations, Op. 1Schubert: Fantasy in C Major, D. 760 ("Wanderer")The theme and variations form is one of the oldest in music, and a particularly popular choice for keyboard music. Two of the variations we’ll hear on today’s episode are based on songs by Schubert. The most substantial of these is the last piece on the program: Schubert’s Fantasy in C Major, popularly known as the “Wanderer Fantasy.” In this work, Schubert takes his lied, or song, “The Wanderer,” as a kernel of inspiration, and stretches it to an elaborate piece of nearly twenty minutes. The first work is also inspired by a Schubert lied: Franz Liszt’s Ständchen von Shakespeare. Ständchen is one of the lightest pieces in the collection, a ray of sunshine amidst the Sturm und Drang of Liszt’s twelve Schubert lieder transcriptions. Between these two works, we’ll hear Schumann’s Abegg Variations, Opus 1. The piece was inspired by and dedicated to the Countess von Abegg, whose name is literally spelled out in the work’s musical theme—with the notes A, B-flat, E, G and G.
