The new challenge for ex-Defence personnel in your Supply Chains with Rhiannon Willis

To coincide with Anzac Day, this episode unpacks the concerning emerging issue for ex-Defence personnel in your business and your supply chain. The Defence Amendment (Safeguarding Australia's Military Secrets) Bill 2023 came into law in Australia on the 8th April 2024. The act has two arms: the first impacts ex-Defence personnel and ex-Department of Defence staff, the second affects ‘Australian citizens'. Both carry penalties up to 20 years imprisonment. At face value, the need to safeguard Australian military secrets makes total sense- it's a no-brainer… but as the episode's guest explains, the Act has raised concerns in the business community. To many, it looks like it achieved ‘The Law of Unexpected Consequences'. And today's guest is not only perfect for the task at hand, she's also a fascinating guest in her own right: Rhiannon Willis is an emerging leader in her field, a highly qualified lawyer. She has a history in procurement and business, and she is extremely knowledgeable in the impacts of this new regulation. James and Rhiannon have an engaging and interesting conversation. Well worth a listen. In this episode, James learns about Rhiannon (an interesting tale) and her career to date (also fascinating) and then the two deep dive into the new regulations: • What is it? • How will it impact individuals and companies? • What it might mean for the hiring of highly trained ex-Defence people? • The possible implications for your upstream and downstream supply chains. • And more. James and Rhiannon also discuss other current legal issue such as cyber-security and ESG. And we find out of the connection between Rhiannon and England and Wales. To find out more about SAMS, here are some helpful links: • Here's the main defence page explaining SAMS. • Here's the parliament site which sets out the history of the legislative process for this Act and includes explanatory memoranda, links to the various versions of the Bill and ministerial speeches on the intended impact of the Bill. • Here's the link to the Act itself.

It's every day life in Centralia, Pennsylvania, a creepy abandoned town that's been on fire since 1962, and was the inspiration for one of the most terrifying video games ever created. Carney told NPR's Steve Inskeep that we will almost certainly face similar problems in the future, so we should be wary of today's unstable political systems.

We’ve previously talked about the “F.I.R.E.” movement (Financial Independence and Retire Early). Most people assume that early retirement is a universally good thing. But what are some of the unexpected drawbacks of leaving the workforce early? 1. Not as Happy as You Expected Generally, retirement makes you happy, but the increase in happiness was already priced in. It’s not like an instant happiness from winning the lottery. Retiring early is a process that you’ve been building up. Perhaps it’s better to say that the process toward early retirement may cause a gradual increase in happiness. People have said that the initial happiness of retiring early tends to fade in three to six months. As humans, we adapt to our circumstances quickly. Your way of living eventually becomes your normal. 2. Identity Crisis Many people don’t realize how much of their identity is connected to their job and only after you leave your job do you truly realize how wound up you were in your profession. This identity crisis may last as little as three months or even up to a few years. When people ask what you do for a living and you tell them you don't do anything, it could pull at your sense of self-worth. It’s hard to tell people that you are not working when you used to do something. You may feel like you now have a void that needs to be filled. 3. Loss of Power/Influence This affects more of corporate America. When you work for a company, regardless of your actual salary, you may have a fancy executive title. You make decisions that have potentially million-dollar impacts. You have people reporting to you, depending on you, and seeking your permission. It is extremely hard to shift from having all of that power and influence to having none of it. Going from a job like that to fishing every day may sound heavenly, but people report that it is hard to deal with the loss of that sense of importance. When people prepare for retirement, they often think of the financial aspect, but It is important to plan for how it will impact you mentally and emotionally, too. 4. Need for New Motivation Most of us have been working for money since we started working. Once you achieve financial independence, what now? You don’t want to be idle, but you’re not striving for the highest paying position. Losing your main source of motivation can be disorienting, but it is something you have to learn to deal with. When someone retires, their motivation isn’t for money anymore. They need to find happiness and fulfillment in other ways. The most public example of this is Bill Gates. He made his money in Microsoft, but he’s not working on Windows anymore. He’s trying to cure malaria and solve nuclear power. Not everyone will retire and become a philanthropist, but retirement opens the opportunity to do something you love. Maybe you had a demanding work schedule that kept you from volunteering. In retirement, you now have the time to pursue those desires. 5. Living within a budget This does not apply to everyone, but many retirees have to watch what they spend. Maybe you start declining dinner invites, forgoing expensive travel, downsizing belongings, or sell your home. For many, living on a budget is an easy decision when deciding if they would rather be back in the rat race, or forgo some things and truly be retired. I’ve read essays from folks who have been through this. I think the F.I.R.E movement is not just about retiring early but making sure you’re set up to have resources. Retirement means changing your budget for the stage you’re in. For some, it will be a tougher adjustment than for others.   You can learn more in my book, “How to Invest for Retirement”

Expectations are tricky things, and we deal with them every day in the systems we create - community expectations, religious expectations, and expectations with friends and acquaintances. In a relationship with your spouse, expectations help to reinforce the system your household relies on to conduct its business. You expect that the bills will be paid, you expect that the dog will be walked, and so on. But as a lot of parents know, when you place those same expectations on children who don't have a say in how the system runs - it can lead to problems. So think about those community expectations, religious expectations, and the systems they create. Who had a seat at the table in creating those expectations? And as a result - what consequences do we now live with? Today we're having a conversation with Simon Goettl about how personal, familial, and societal expectations intersect - and how those expectations can contribute to resentment in some cases, and to success in others. https://www.patreon.com/bottomlesscoffee (Support Bottomless Coffee on Patreon!) https://www.instagram.com/jerometevans (Connect with Jerome on Instagram) https://www.bottomlesscoffeepodcast.com/ (Bottomless Coffee Website) Patreon Producers: Aaron Weiss Alex Palacios Ron Hunter Colin Gillens Brendan Phillips

One of the (perhaps not so obvious) consequences of organic gardening is keeping the four-legged critters from eating what we grow. But much more serious is the consequence that climate change has on growing large scale food for our planet. We know about the floods and droughts, but what about the nutritional quality of our edibles? Today I look at this scary problem that is happening right under our noses. There was a mind-blowing article in politico from 2017 that talks about decreases in nutrient levels due to rising CO2 levels. That article can be found here.    Harvard.edu has a short but not so sweet article on this issue as well. It can be found here.    I summarized a detailed sciencey article from the journal, Nature. That article can be found here.   This article in Advances in Science talks about how climate change can affect the diversity of edible plant species. In this episode, I talked about my review of a documentary called "the need to grow". That was episode 242 and it can be found here. As always, if you have any questions about today's episode or would like to sign up for nutrition counseling with me, you can contact me on my website, Which Is Healing outside the box.

The one we're in now has brought obvious changes — like the impact on businesses, education, and the economy — but no one could anticipate the changes to society beyond the obvious. Like the impact on social services, supply chains and the different ways we have to navigate social interaction. People have rescheduled medical procedures. Stores are sold out of exercise equipment because gyms were closed. People who read lips can't do that as easily with so many people wearing masks in public. What unforeseen effects have you noticed since the pandemic, and subsequent safety measures, have begun? When does the pursuit of safety lead us into danger? Greg Ip, of the Wall Street Journal and author of Foolproof talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the ideas in his book--the way we publicly and privately try to cope with risk and danger and how those choices can create unintended consequences. While much of the conversation focuses on the financial crisis of 2008, there are also discussions of football injuries, damage from natural disasters such as hurricanes, car accidents, and Herbert Hoover. Along the way, Herman Melville's insights into the mesmerizing nature of water make an appearance.

Economists are widely familiar with the Ricardian equivalence thesis. It maintains that, given the time-path of government spending, a change in taxation does not alter the set of feasible life-time consumption plans of the households and affects neither the demand for commodities and services nor the rate of interest, provided the households act rationally. In this note a surprising finding is established. Assuming that the agents in a standard infinite horizon growth model hold the very expectations the thesis proposes (“Ricardian expectations”), it is shown that these expectations are invalidated. This divergence from the Ricardian equivalence thesis is traced to the omission of interest payments on public debt as part of the households' disposable income. The non-equivalence is valid in a wide class of models.

In this note a surprising finding is established. Assuming that the agents in a standard infinite horizon growth model hold the very expectations the thesis proposes (“Ricardian expectations”), it is shown that these expectations are disappointed. This divergence from the Ricardian equivalence thesis is traced to the omission of interest payments on public debt as part of the households' disposable income. The non-equivalence is valid in a wide class of models. Further it is shown that a permanent deficit policy does not imply a violation of the government's budget constraint at any point of time in the future.
