The partnership, which kicks off October 26 as Holland America Line completes the recreation of the brand's first-ever sailing from Rotterdam to New York City, features on-board video content across Holland America's entire fleet produced by an Ellis Island researcher, as well as a curated exhibit launching in 2023 at Ellis Island detailing the brand's historical prominence in bringing 1 in 10 immigrants from Europe to the United States. The collaboration will launch with a joint talk between Stephen Lean, director of The American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island and Bill Miller, noted cruise historian, detailing the immigrant experience in the late 1800s; the presentation will be available on-demand across all ships within the fleet. Noting the cruise industry's – and particularly Holland America Line's – importance in the immigrant journey from Europe to US, the Foundation will curate an exhibit in its History Center available for visitors from February to April 2023.The cruise line, which was founded in the Netherlands in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company, was primarily a carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying nearly 2 million passengers to new lives in the New World. Holland America Line was the first to do away with “Steerage class” altogether, renaming it “Emigrants Class” where unlike the competition, guests were served three square meals. It is this level of care and attention to detail – a tradition and hallmark of the brand that has continued to this day – that was the impetus for its nickname at the time: “The Spotless Fleet.” Holland America Line provided everything from doctors and a pre-departure hotel complete with English lessons and classes on American civics to ensure passengers a safe journey to New York; and in fact, 99% of the immigrants carried on the fleet were cleared for entry through Ellis Island, a tremendous feat at the time.Holland America Line began the recreation of its first voyage with a sendoff October 15 from the Netherlands. The ship will sail past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as it arrives in New York City around 7am October 26.Windstar Cruises Partners with Coral Gardeners in TahitiWindstar Cruises has partnered with the Coral Gardeners, a Mo'orea (French Polynesia)-based organization determined to revolutionize ocean conservation and create a global movement to save the coral reefs through reef restoration, awareness activities, and innovative solutions. The team works to grow, plant, and monitor thousands of heat-resilient corals with the goal of bringing life back to the ocean. The three-year partnership begins this month with Windstar's $35,000 donation to Coral Gardeners to adopt coral for all guests sailing with Windstar in French Polynesia for the remainder of 2022.2022 is Windstar's 35th anniversary of sailing in Tahiti/French Polynesia – the longest of any operator in the region. (It's also the only destination where the U.S.-based cruise line sails year-round, giving guests ample opportunity to plan a once-in-a-lifetime visit in any season.) With two ships sailing French Polynesia throughout October, Windstar has been celebrating its 35th season all month long with special events, integration with local dignitaries and artists, and a heightened infusion of local culture both on board and ashore.Guests on the remaining 2022 sailings will receive a small card in their guest room, alerting them to the adoption of coral in their name. In 2023 and 2024, each guest booked on a Windstar cruise in French Polynesia will be presented with the option to adopt a coral for a donation of $35 per person. Unique coral adoption cards for those participating will be placed in their guest room on board.Windstar is confident the majority of guests will choose to donate to help save the reef they are enjoying on their Tahiti cruise.A decade of FUN down under It's been just over two weeks after returning to Australian shores and yesterday Carnival Cruise Line celebrated an incredible 10 years of providing Australians with fun-filled holidays at great value.Kicking off celebrations at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, passengers aboard Carnival Splendor were treated to the party of a lifetime with beach games on the sand, Carnival cupcakes and a giant ‘10 Years in Aus' sandcastle before returning to the ship for her journey home to Sydney.First arriving down under in October 2012, over one million guests have since experienced the fun of a Carnival cruise. To say Daquan and Nicole Woodberry have a lot of irons in the fire would be an understatement. The chef and entrepreneur power couple hopes to transform the way Richmond orders food with both the LoCo food delivery app and virtual restaurants. "A virtual restaurant is essentially a restaurant within a restaurant. It thrives and operates solely off of delivery platforms," Dequan, who goes by Chef DQ, explained. "So if you go on any of the delivery apps such as [his app] LoCo, Uber Eats, GrubHub and DoorDash. And you're like, hey, I want fried chicken sandwiches, and you're scrolling down and you'll see [his new brand] Absurd Bird pop up. Well, you'll be able to order. And that food will be made at [his restaurant] RVA Cafe and it'll be delivered to you and you may or may not know is coming from RVA Cafe. So the big thing here is a lot of bigger chains and a lot of bigger corporations are getting into this. Maybe people have heard of Hootie's Burger Bar, that's a virtual restaurant from Hooters. But you walk into Hooters and they're going to look at you like you're crazy If you come ask them for a Hootie's burger. They're like, we don't know what that is, the servers are sometimes unaware. So this is how the world is changing. And it was happening way before COVID. But you know, being honest, COVID accelerated that process pretty much five times over." Daquan, who served in the Marines, said he learned his work ethic from his father Maurice and was inspired to follow his dreams by his wife Nicole. "When I say she saved my entire life she did. I was in a really dark space. I had just come out of the Marine Corps. I was actually injured. So I'm more than thankful, that God spared life on that end and I'm still able to function because I have friends that can't," Daquan said. "She really refreshed my life. She really came and poured life back into me and kind of encouraged me to go and find what I love to do. So that's actually what led me to be a chef. She said do what you love. And, you know, she supported me the whole entire way." Several years and businesses later, Dqquan admits it's more than support. "Now she's the real boss of the whole business," he said. " just sit here and look pretty. She does everything else." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hooters was one of the success stories among large sports-bar chains in 2020, largely because it was ready to shift to an all off-premises menu. The Atlanta-based chain already had seen that takeout and delivery were going to be growing segments of their business and had launched a fast-casual spinoff chain, Hoots Wings, in 2017, allowing corporate management and franchisees to become familiar with catering to the off-premises space. Additionally, Hooters management had been approached before the pandemic started by third-party-delivery company Uber Eats to roll out a virtual burger concept, so Hootie’s Burger Bar was up and running even before last year’s lock down. Since then, the parent company has launched Hootie’s Bait & Tackle, highlighting the chain’s seafood items, as well as Hootie’s Chicken Tenders. All of those concepts have remained popular even as dining rooms opened up, leading to incremental sales with minimal added cost. In this video, Hooters CEO Sal Melilli discusses the chain’s success and his optomism for a bright future.

The name of Erik's previous company was 80|20 picked because he was looking for a company name that was short, abstract, and related to business (the 80/20 rule) with an available domain name. About a month or two into it, someone asked if it meant “80% protein to 20% fat.” Turns out that's the ratio of hamburger meat and there was a local restaurant in Norfolk called 80/20 Burger Bar and there turned out to be a lot of brand confusion because of this. So he had to start rebranding it as 80|20 Software Consulting because of the brand confusion. Kevin's company name was ID Web Studios. Ironically, they both wanted to change their names when they joined together as business partners because they both hated the names they were coming into the partnership with. So the company rebranded as Array Digital. If you're thinking about getting into business, the company name frankly doesn't matter that much. There's a lot of huge companies out there with bad names, right? But once you build up your brand's reputation, it overcomes the bad name. Think about brand confusion and whether you're going to like your name for the long haul. If you try to morph into something else in the future, how can your name also change with your company? These are the most important factors in choosing a brand name and if you're not sure it meets these qualifications, pick a new name. — Erik J. Many of us have dreamt of making the move overseas and opening a small business, there are those of us who have done and those amongst who sit idly by, but Australian expat in Bogota, Darren Crockett is far from the latter.  Moving to Colombia from Germany with his Colombian wife, Crockett launched an ambitious plan to open up the "Gourmet Burger Bar," serving, as you would expect, hamburgers, vegetarian and vegan options, drinks and finger foods. And it's been a success as he and his wife have opened a second site in Chapinero (Calle 45 and Caracas) to compliment the first location in the district of Englativa.  Crockett and his team have plenty of ambition, hoping to open further locations soon and seeking investors. Tune in to this episode No 288 of the Colombia Calling podcast to hear about a success story and the trials and challenges that he has bested along the way.  You can find and follow the Gourmet Burger Bar on Instagram and Facebook
