Haley Bennett (“Hillbilly Elegy”) takes the title role of an early female entrepreneur in the historical drama, “Widow Clicquot.” The post Take Two: “Widow Clicquot” (R) appeared first on KKFI.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What makes us successful as creative beings? That's a question that scholars, philosophers and artists have been asking rhetorically for eons. Much, of course, depends on the nature of the creation. A lot also depends on the traits and temperaments of the creators. But the actual mix of attributes necessary for achieving such fulfillment may ultimately be difficult to define – or, as the French might say, a certain je ne sais quoi. Evan is off this week, so Megan and Dave braved this week's releases. Actually, Dave didn't see TWISTERS (2:39) — Lee Isaac Chung's disaster movie legacy sequel starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos — so it's up to Megan to tell you, dear listeners, that it's kind of crap. She has some positive things say about it (Glen Powell, for example)…but not many. Both Megan and Dave saw WIDOW CLICQUOT (21:52), a period-piece biopic directed by Thomas Napper about Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot who took over her husband's champagne business after his death. French people, chateaus, business? Dave's all about it (and all about Haley Bennett!). Megan liked it but didn't love it. Finally, they both saw ODDITY (39:07), Damian Mc Carthy's eerie horror film about a psychic (Carolyn Bracken) investigating her twin sister's murder, and his follow-up to CAVEAT. And they loved it! No complaints! Four stars! This movie is one creepy bastard! Over on Patreon, Megan and Dave talked about TWISTER, Jan de Bont's 1996 film starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, because apparently the pain of TWISTERS wasn't enough. (We actually enjoy it!)
Directed by Thomas Napper, WIDOW CLICQUOT follows Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot (Haley Bennett) as she grieves the loss of her beloved husband. Having been left the family's fledgling wine business in his will, Clicquot finds herself under pressure to relinquish the land to male buyers. But she refuses to sell, beginning a journey that will change the shape of the wine industry as she leads the company through political and financial upheaval. In this 1on1, we speak to Bennett and Napper about the complexities of winemaking & the legacy of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot.

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly newspaper column.Champagne's rise 2-8-2023The land was sheep country, too far north for grapes. The local wine was mediocre, pawned off to roughhewn wool buyers or consumed by locals as vin de table.Nevertheless, to raise money for monasteries, Benedictine monks steadily improved their vineyards. They learned what grapes fared well in the cool climate and chalky soils around Reims, the historic Benedictine cathedral town where French kings were crowned. They spent a significant effort dealing with the pesky problem of carbon dioxide—a natural byproduct of all winemaking.Reims Cathéter (2.0 Generic (cc by 2.0))Because wine did not travel well, local wine had to be poured at coronations and royal events at Reims. The local wine became linked to sumptuous celebrations and elite society.Hyacinthe Rigaud, cc By-SA 4.0Louis XIV significantly burnished the local wine's image when he enjoyed it along with his other obsessions of fashion, luxury, and prestige. Then Louis XV—son of the Sun King—authorized transportation of the local wine to other regions in bottles. Now, instead of the wine going flat in wooden barrels, the CO2 remained trapped in the wine. It sparkled. When English glassmakers improved bottles to contain higher pressures in the mid-1600s, the wine from the cold sheep country found its niche as a special wine for celebrations. Mythology followed. Pierre “Dom” Pérignon did not invent Champagne and never announced he was “seeing stars.” While Pérignon substantially improved vineyard management, he actually toiled to avoid bubbles. In a pure PR move, Pérignon was credited with Champagne's creation a century after his death.Bottles enhanced the Champagne myth. At first, labels showcased association with nobility. After the French Revolution, labels promoted Champagne as the soul and character of the French people. Voltaire proclaimed Champagne “the most glorious expression” of French civilization.Myth making accelerated. Jean-Rémy Moët established Moët in the United States with George Washington as a happy customer. Napoleon used Champagne to toast a new, industrious bourgeois society. When the Russian army routed Napoleon and reached the city of Reims, the resourceful Veuve (“widow”) Clicquot welcomed the soldiers. Instead of destroying her winery, the Russians got drunk and went home as an eager market for her product. The Industrial Revolution expanded markets. Winery innovations improved efficiency and quality. Champagne entered a golden age that continues today. Champagne became symbolic of sophisticated celebrations, triumphs, luxury, indulgence. The neglected region of sheep and inferior grapes turned the wine world upside down.Last round: Wine gives people ideas. Champagne gives people strategies. This is a reader-supported publication.

More than two hundred years ago in Napoleonic France, the business world was walled off to women, and champagne was a luxury reserved for the ruling class. So then how did a young widow take over her husband’s struggling wine business and turn champagne into an international phenomenon? And how does her legacy continue to shape what we drink today?Sign up for our newsletter: http://newsletter.businessinsider.com/join/brought-to-you-by
This Shot Caller story, told by Nicola Foulston, CEO of Rosenblatt Solicitors in London, will give you a birds eye view into the life of a true business disruptor! Do you think you are too young to disrupt a male dominated industry? Do you think you are too old to disrupt a male dominated industry? Nicola will prove you wrong on BOTH accounts. Nicola inherited Brands Hatch race track, a beloved British motor racing circuit in Kent, England, at the age of 19 when her father died suddenly. She saw an opportunity to transform this "old boys" sporting event, focused on the experience for the racer into a smashingly successful hospitality business, focused on the experience of the consumer! One of the biggest hurdles she experienced at this time had more to do with her age than with her sex. She sold Brands Hatch 7 years later in 1997 for GBP 120m/ $150m! This huge turnaround story earned her the Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year, which she received in 1997 as CEO of Brands Hatch Leisure Group. To date, she is the youngest woman ever to have received this honor. Nicola explains the importance of asking questions and how valuable it was to her to have John Moulton, a top British venture capitalist as her mentor. After listing Brands Hatch and netting a few pretty pennies, Nicola retired to Switzerland to start a family. She organically ended up running a family office where she made strategic, private investments. Her first two investments happened to be founded by women. Nicola admits that having a young family and trying to run a corporation was not possible for her. She saw her opportunity to start her family after selling her business and feels that was absolutely the right decision for her. In 2016, Nicola was enticed out of retirement by Ian Rosenblatt, the lawyer she appointed at the age of 19, early on in her Brands Hatch days. He knew if anyone could disrupt and reinvent the legal profession, it was Nicola Foulston! She used her formula of pairing the business back to nuts and bolts and understanding how it made money. It took her less than two years to do what she did with Brands Hatch, list the law firm on the London AIM stock exchange, raising GBP 43m/ $56m. Her goal, to self-fund their Litigation business, which is a very niche and profitable part of law. Rosenblatt was only the 4th Law firm to list in the UK. Nicky is unapologetically commercial and their firm has a net operating margin of 35%, which is exceptional. With their litigation fund, they can help the David's take on the Goliath's. We talk about promoter vs. prevention questions in the venture capital fundraising world. Women get asked prevention questions and men the promoter questions. We cover the urgent need to promote businesses finding solutions to the climate crisis and so much more. There is a link to the David Attenborough documentary trailer on Youtube. This is one hour packed full of inspiration, insight, motivation and wisdom from a very successful and impressive woman. For this episode, Kitty and Ellie crack open a bottle of bona fide champagne from France to tell the story of Veuve Clicquot. In French, "veuve" means "widow," and Clicquot was the married name of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin who would become a well-known name in the world of champagne. She was a pioneering woman who took risks, invented a new way of bottling and consistently kept her competitors, including Moet & Chandon, wondering how she did it. She was pragmatic, a single mother, and left a legacy for her family to enjoy for centuries after. So, we're popping a bottle of her demi-sec champagne, telling her story and toasting to her success.

The Veuve in Veuve Clicquot is Madame Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot. Married at 21 to François Clicquot, she was widowed only six years later. Left in control of his company, she stuck in and truly created the brand as we know today. Her innovations, including riddling (shaking the bottles to loosen the sediment, giving the champagne its flavor), and business acumen are lauded today. In the shadow of International Women’s Day last week, Best Sips is proud to have the Historian of Veuve Clicquot here today. FYI: Veuve Clicquot arranges the annual Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award which “champions the success of business women worldwide who share the same qualities as Madame Clicquot!” Where you can hear me drinking next: Next we return to London to meet Vittorio Gentile, who is reviving the 1930’s Italian Futurist cocktail-making manifesto and bringing it into the modern era.
