Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.15.516637v1?rss=1 Authors: Borrus, D. S., Grover, C. J., Del Negro, C. A., Smith, G. D. C. Abstract: The preBotzinger complex of the lower brainstem generates two breathing-related rhythms: one for inspiration on a timescale of seconds, and another that produces larger amplitude sighs on the order of minutes. We hypothesize that these two disparate rhythms emerge in tandem wherein recurrent excitation gives rise to the inspiratory rhythm while a calcium oscillator generates sighs; distinct neuronal populations are not required. We present several mathematical models that instantiate our working hypothesis including: (1) an activity (firing rate) model and (2) a minimal spiking network model. Both modeling frameworks corroborate the single-population rhythmogenic hypothesis. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Janice Del Negro is a bit of a hero in the world of storytelling. She teaches is at Dominican University, where she is a professor, subjects such as storytelling, children's and young adult literature and foundations of library and informations services. I have been following Janice for a while, and love her work and over COVID-19 time have got to know her better. We first met years ago, but we rarely saw each other. Why folks tales? "True love and money is what everyone wants." Another quote about folk and fairy tales from Janice: "People yearn for justice." In this episode Janice goes into her process and shares the making of a couple of stories and a line she started with, a line she came up with for the story - the last line of the tale: "Seven brides you have sent to the bottom of sea, and now you will be bride groom to them all." I hope you get as much from this as I did! https://storytelling.org/delnegro https://www.
Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
“Storytelling? I’m already reading books to my child – isn’t that enough?” Your child DOES get a lot out of reading books (which is why we’ve done a several episodes on that already, including Did you already miss the boat on teaching your toddler how to read? (https://yourparentingmojo.com/003-your-toddler-isnt-reading-yet-neither-is-mine/) . But it turns out that storytelling benefits our relationship with our child in ways that reading books really can’t, because you’re looking at the book rather than at your child. If you ask your child what kind of story they’d like you to tell, you also get incredible insight into both their interests and concerns – I can attest to this, as I’ve been singing story-songs about poop and various kinds of baby animals who can’t find their mamas on and off for several weeks now (we had an incident a few months back where she couldn’t find me in a store). In this episode we also discuss the ways that people from different cultures tell stories, and what implications this has for them as they interact with our education system. I got to sit down with Kimi, who cut her teeth in journalism working in high level positions for such little-known slackers as Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Oprah Winfrey. Among other gems, Kimi shares how one of the pivotal moments in her career took place just before she graduated college when, as an intern, she was called to report on an occurrence that we would later come to know as The Columbine Massacre. She walks me through the ups and downs that eventually led her to the point where she left journalism to produce one of my favorite films of 2016, the critically acclaimed documentary, "Gleason" (if you haven't seen this, go watch it now - it will destroy you and inspire you) as a passion project to tell the story of one of her best friends. Gleason was purchased by Amazon after a competitive bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival and subsequently found itself on almost every shortlist for the Oscars. In her spare time, Kimi's underachieving work ethic helped her co-author the best-selling book, "A Letter to My Dog", which has sold eighty thousand copies around the world and has been translated into three languages. She's also raised three wonderful kids who never forget to say "please" and "thank you" to Mr. Del Negro (that's me, guys... I'm Mr. Del Negro. At least someone gives me that respect).
