Environmental Control …..Definitely the most important aspect of commercial growing. The difference between success and failure. This week we have left the control of our whole show to our first guest Michael the man behind @tricleanair with 20 years of experience with environmental control in commercial gardens Michael saw the need for purpose built DHVAC units, which is an All-In-One system that can control Temperature, Humidity, and CO2 also TriFog Humidity Control systems and DirOxy Dissolved Oxygen Injection systems. Lots of tech talk, but on top of that Michael has created community with some of our old friends such as Ruga from @grassrootscalifornia who rumour has it might be LIVE in studio. We will also talk to some new friends and some of his successful clients such as Bean from @maven_genetics out of LA who believe that everyone who seeks more from cannabis is a connoisseur, an enthusiast, and a true Maven. Also joining the convo is Lance aka @craft_farmer707 who is utilizing Under Canopy lighting and crushing it by the way and finally Jacob @mi_gas from @sevenpointsupply out of Danville Illinois who like our other guests are creating craft cannabis on scale which can only be done with the right equipment which luckily dedicated people like Michael have designed from the ground up. A City on Mars: Can we settle space, should we settle space, and have we really thought this through? – That is the title of a book published in late 2023 which then became an instant NY Times bestseller and went on to win a 2024 Hugo Award. My guest this week is Kelly Weinersmith, one of its two authors, together with her husband. The book is a critical, and humorously written, examination of the question of whether humanity should settle space. It touches on everything ranging from legal aspects all the way to having babies in Space. For me as a die-hard proponent of humanity settling in space, this was a fun and insightful conversation to have. You know her, you love her, Marybeth Sanchez is back on the main podcast! Today Marybeth shares her deep passion for outdoor gardening, and gives us some incredible tips on how to control your environment (as best you can) in an outdoor setting. Marybeth discusses the importance of mulching through the entire episode, and she emphasizes the variety of benefits it brings from shielding the soil from sun, to reducing root temperatures, and more. She talks about a variety of mulch options, and which ones you should and shouldn't apply to your garden beds. This leads to a larger conversation about root zone temperature, and how in an outdoor grow it is often most beneficial to focus on shading and cooling your POTS rather than your CANOPY. MBS also discusses shade cloths before wrapping the show, which percentage of shading is right for you, and when it's best to grow your plants under stippled shade instead of a full blown shade cloth! *Code growcast15 now works with grow KITS from AC Infinity! www.acinfinity.com use promo code growcast15 for 15% off the BEST grow fans in the game, plus tents, pots, scissors, LED lights, and now GROW KITS!* *PROUD NEW PARTNERS: Pulse Grow Room Monitors, industry leader in grow room data and monitoring! Episode 85: Detecting Dementia and Evusheld®. Parneeta Singh explained a new blood test to predict Alzheimer's disease and an artificial-intelligence cognitive test for early detection of dementia. Dr Saito and Dr Arreaza present Evusheld, a monoclonal antibody for pre-exposure prophylaxis against COVID-19.  Today is March 4, 2022. Today marks the 2-year anniversary of our podcast. We have been bringing you relevant clinical information for 2 years, almost every week. We hope you have found this podcast useful. If you have learned at least one thing from us, our goal has been reached. This podcast started as an experiment and it has become an enriching experience for students, residents, faculty, and all of you who listen to us throughout the world. We look forward to many more years of education, updates, and fun! Thanks for listening.Introduction: Innovative ways to detect dementia: Alzosure Predict® and CognICA® By Parneeta Singh, MD, Ross University School of Medicine; comments by Hector Arreaza, MD.   Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurocognitive disorder that is the most common cause of dementia. More than 6 million Americans aged 65 and older have the late-onset subtype while many more between ages 30 and 60s have the early-onset subtype although the latter is very rare. One of the first signs of AD is memory issues. A decline in other aspects of thinking, impaired judgment or reasoning, visual/spatial problems can also indicate early stages of AD. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can also be considered an early sign of AD. However, not everyone with MCI will develop the disease. As the disease progresses, people with AD have trouble performing daily activities such as cooking, driving, managing their finances while some have personality changes as well. According to the Alzheimer's Association, two abnormal structures called plaques (deposits of a protein fragment called beta-amyloid that builds up between neurons) and tangles (twisted fibers of another protein called tau that builds up inside neurons) are most probably responsible for the damaging effects seen in AD. Patients with AD develop plaques and tangles initially in parts of the brain involved in memory, such as the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus, before affecting other parts of the brain such as the cerebral cortex which is responsible for reasoning, social behavior, and language. Today, AD is at the forefront of biomedical research with earlier diagnoses and interventions improving drastically. New research conducted by Diadem (a diagnostic company that focuses on AD research) exhibited that a novel blood test called Alzosure Predict® identifies a variant of the protein p53 which seems to predict AD's progression up to 6 years before a clinical diagnosis is made. This blood test measures a derivative of p53 (U-p53AZ) which is implicated in AD pathogenesis. Blood samples from patients aged 60 years and older who had different levels of cognitive function were analyzed which showed that the test predicted a decline from MCI to AD at the end of 6 years. The test can also classify a patient's cognition stage. The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were at 90%. Knowing which patients will progress to AD allows them to try treatments earlier on the disease when therapies are most likely to be more effective. Additionally, using the test could speed up the approval of prospective drug treatments and allow those patients with a likelihood of developing AD to enroll in clinical studies. Patients can also be monitored during a study instead of relying on costly PET scans and painful lumbar punctures. These findings were presented at the 14th Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's Disease (CTAD) conference in November 2021.Another way to detect dementia early on is by an artificial intelligence cognitive assessment called Cognetivity's Integrated Cognitive Assessment (CognICA®) which has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in October 2021. It is a 5-minute computerized cognitive assessment that is completed using an iPad. It has numerous advantages over traditional pen and paper-based cognitive tests such as avoidance of cultural or educational bias, absence of learning effect upon repeat testing, its high sensitivity to detect early-stage cognitive impairment, and since it is computer-based, it can be self-administered and performed remotely. In conclusion, reliable, simple, cost-effective measures of cognition are critical for providing quality care whether it is in the field of family medicine, neurology, or geriatrics. According to Percy Griffin, Ph.D., MSc, director of scientific engagement at the Alzheimer's Association, the ability of such technologies to detect dementia before significant loss of brain cells “would be game-changing” for individuals, their families, and the healthcare system at large. This is Rio Bravo qWeek, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California. Edited by Hector Arreaza, MD. Collaboration: Steven Saito, MD.This monoclonal antibody is for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) of COVID-19, which means it is given prior to exposure to the virus. Evusheld is not a replacement for COVID-19 vaccines, and everyone eligible to receive one of the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines should do so.It is meant to give protection to those who are unable to mount an adequate immune response against COVID 19 after vaccination. It was given an emergency authorization use by FDA on December 8, 2021. EVUSHELD is tixagevimab co-packaged with cilgavimab, two long-acting antibodies. This medication may be effective for pre-exposure prevention up to six months. It was designed to be given to the immunocompromised population and for anyone who cannot receive the vaccine, as long as the patient is older than 12 years and more than 88 pounds.  (We totally make the cut). If your patient has a health condition that won't allow their immune system to develop a strong enough response to the COVID-19 vaccine, for example, they are immunocompromised because of cancer, they can receive Evusheld. If they are taking medications that prevent a strong enough response to the COVID-19 vaccine, for example, chemotherapy or transplant anti-rejection medications, they can receive Evusheld. If they are unable to get the vaccine due to anaphylaxis to all of the COVID-19 vaccines or their ingredients, they can receive Evusheld.Monoclonal antibodies are lab-made proteins that mimic the immune system's way of fighting off infections. The two antibodies in Evusheld are long-acting and are made to specifically fight off against SARS-CoV-2. Evusheld is administered by two injections immediately given one after another. In a recent study done looking at how effective Evusheld was, it showed a 77% reduced risk of developing COVID-19 compared to individuals who received placebo. This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults older than 59 years old or with a prespecified chronic medical condition or at increased risk for COVID-19 and for other reasons didn't receive the vaccine and have no prior history of COVID-19. Some side effects of the medication include hypersensitivity reactions, bleeding at injection site, headache, fatigue, and cough. If you would like to provide this monoclonal antibody Evusheld to your patients, as well as other treatments such as Paxlovid, Molnupiravir, sotrovimab, and bebtelovimab, consult the COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator provided by the office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness & Response. You can do a Google search for HHS COVID-19 Therapeutics locator or you can find the link in the notes of this episode. [https://covid-19-therapeutics-locator-dhhs.hub.arcgis.com/]________________________________Now we conclude our episode number 85 “Detecting Dementia and Evusheld” You listened to Dr Singh present some new promising ways to recognize Alzheimer's disease early and detect those who are at risk of progression. We are all hoping for a simple way to diagnose Alzheimer's, and in the near future, we may have a blood test that can help us diagnose this devastating disease. Also, you heard about Evusheld, the new monoclonal antibody given Emergency Use Authorization by FDA for pre-exposure prophylaxis for COVID-19. Indoor cannabis cultivation promises total control over the growing environment. That means no weather disruptions, no surprises from a changing climate, and all-year growing. However, as many indoor cultivators have discovered, controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is still prone to fluctuations. Pockets of stagnant air develop underneath the canopy in a large flower room. Outdoor seasonal changes still impact the indoor temperature and relative humidity. In another example, relative humidity spikes in response to changes in the plants themselves. These ongoing fluctuations are why cultivators, both large and small, turn to automation and advanced grow room controls. It's been over a year and a half since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in South Carolina.  And, as much as people would like it to be, this pandemic is far from over.  Earlier this year, there was hope that this fall we would be edging closer to normalcy — that we would have overcome vaccine hesitancy enough that spread would have slowed.  But, that didn't happen, and slow uptake of the vaccine combined with the delta variant brought on South Carolina's third surge in COVID-19 cases.  Today, we're taking a closer look at the state of the pandemic right now, and the strain that it's causing for people tasked with fighting this pandemic every day.On Monday, Sept. 13, we spoke with Dr. Brannon Traxler, director of public health for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, or DHEC, about this surge and what makes it different from previous spikes in cases during this pandemic.Post and Courier Columbia reporter Avery Wilks also gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his deep dive into DHEC and the strain and frustration the agency's workers are feeling in the midst of the state's third major surge in COVID-19 cases. READ MORE: Inside DHEC, where workers fight anxiety, frustration, fatigue amid crush of pandemicVisit the Post and Courier's COVID-19 dashboard.

Environmental Control Measures: Boldness

In this message, the question was asked, “What environmental control measures have I established to meet with God?” This will determine how and what we establish with others. Salvation brings access to authority; the ability to adjust everything according to the need. Salvation brings empowerment because it now gives us the ability to see. We should conduct our lives as one looking out the window (looking forward) and not in a mirror (looking at the past).God talks to us so that we can connect, grow, serve, and celebrate resulting in a transformation of a life. We cannot be timid with the things of God. We must speak as the way God allows us to speak. We must understand the presence of God and what He provides. His presence is always with us. Pastor connected verses 19 and 22 of Hebrews 10. In the Old Testament, the priests entered boldly into the Holy Place, following specific guidelines both naturally and spiritually. For those who have received salvation - God can be trusted. Embrace the will of God by embracing the Word of God. Our actions will reflect in our walk whether or not we trust Him. There will be boldness without anger or under artificial stimulus. The Word of God has provided us the authority to walk in boldness. Our relationship with Him will help us walk with wisdom as a peacemaker. Having wisdom on board will help us to deliver knowledge and create relationships with others. God wants us to see Him in everything we do and say.Our environment has to serve us. Our environment should provide us with what we need. It will feed us in the midst of trials and tribulations. We were encouraged to perform a risk assessment. Let us examine what is in our environment that could influence us to do something that would lead us astray. When you have an established relationship with God, He will also provide an earthly counterpart who will also deliver the Word of God in our environment. The story of Lazarus was an example of what can take place within a designed environmental control measure. The event that took place gave the disciples an opportunity to see the boldness that could operate in their lives. Walk as the new man. Adjust your walk according to how you think as a new creation. Act on what has been provided you through salvation and relationship. Have in place environmental control measures that will work for who you are destined to be.

In this message, Pastor reflected on the actions of Adam, showing us that our lives are all about the decisions we make. Our decision should be to pursue God. We should be looking at how God works us as we receive Him through His Word. God has called us to be free. That can only happen when we are “in the know” of the things of God. If we know what really matters to God, then it will matter to us. Hebrews 10 calls us to deal with the mind according to our pursuit of God. We should persevere in being in the presence of God. God can be trusted to keep His promise. As we build up our relationship with Him, He can fulfill in us what we were called to do. Peace is what we all desire. Often, our activity is driven by our emotions. Our emotions should encompass what God has specifically given us to do. We are at peace when we are in agreement with what God has called us to be. That can be discovered through prayer, believing, and then doing. Our mind should always be kept on Jesus. God has created an environment for us through Jesus. In that environment, we can hear and see. Our environment should serve us. It should be one where risk is reduced and health and safety are promoted. Pastor challenged us to discover what is in our environments and why it is there. We need to see what's in that space that has created disruptions or distractions, and remove them. With the renovations of the church after the fire, South Tacoma Assembly has been given the opportunity to create the environment to best serve what we are called to do. We must recognize the changes in the platform God has provided for us as we go through the challenges of today's environment. Because of our relationship with Jesus, we can speak into the situations at hand. We have our first social distancing episode! Join Adam, James, and Matt as we interview Dr. Jamie Parker, freshly off his dissertation defense, on his dissertation: "The Fluidity of Late Colonial Development: Water Management, State Building, and Rural Resistance in Kenya 1938-63." On the heels of James and Matt's dissertation defenses, we work through defending dissertations in the mid-March pandemic stages during the first couple weeks of Massachusetts shutting down. Jamie talks about how the British colonial government in Kenyan took resources away from natives and gave them to white settlers in the name of progress and profit. Jamie makes his intervention into the history of development and water resources in the British Empire, using Kenya as his case study. He shows how prioritizing specific economic growth by people far away over all else leads to disastrous consequences. He looks at the power dynamics and how tribal groups interacted with settlers, the colonial government, and the London offices. Jamie lays out the timeline of the Kenyan water mismanagement from the war to the Mau Mau rebellion through independence and post-colonial structures, with the focus on cash-crops. How does that play out in the larger globe, when development agencies replicate putting specific models onto larger population centers? What led Dr. Parker to look to Kenyan colonial water management? What was defending his dissertation like during a pandemic like? What's next for Dr. Jamie Parker and the rest of the newly minted doctors of history? When we think about the U.S.-Mexico border, it’s hard not to think about the current immigration conflict and the contentious idea to build a wall. But the concept of a border wall isn’t new: proposals for walls have been made for more than 100 years. Our story starts in 1947, when a group of Texas ranchers demanded a fence along their state’s border with Mexico. Their motivation, though, was to stop an outbreak of a disease that struck farm animals. The response to the crisis was complicated and often messy. But in the end two countries came together to solve a complex predicament—instead of building a wall.  Credits Hosts: Alexis Pedrick and Elisabeth Berry Drago Senior Producer: Mariel Carr Producers: Rigoberto Hernandez, Alexis Pedrick Photo illustration by Jay Muhlin Music Music courtesy of the Audio Network. The Eating Well Podcast #005 on Environmental Control for Wednesday October 19th 2005 Today’s show topic is Environmental control, We’ve mentioned it a lot in previous shows. Now we really break it down and talk about it. What is EC? – The obligatory question Environment means the area around you. Itextends from your body out to where ever you need it to. Your home, car, jobsite or office, restaurants you may visit Any place you go or plan to be is considered your environment There are two types of environmental control: Additive and Subtractive Either your bringing things into your environment because you want to their influence, or you’re removing things from your environment because you don’t want their influence. Environmental Control is a behavior modification tool, that you can use to help yourself make better decisions, and change or encourage or discourage a particular behavior. That behavior can be anything from eating things from vending machines to getting exercise to what time you eat, the list is really limited by your own creativity because environmental control is a tool. Once you learn how to wield it you’ll find all sorts of uses for it.Environmental control can have a tremendous impact on your ability to eat a healthy nutritious diet and lead a more active lifestyle. There are a great number of choices you can influence in each enviornment where adding something to them or removing something from them would help you make a better choice. Adding things to your environment to yield positive nutrtion choices: have a large bowl of fresh fruit, already washed available at all times cut up fruit salad and grab & go veggies in the fridge frozen & canned fruits & veggies in stock easy to prepare and/or cook lean meats (sliced turkey, frozen chicken tenders, veggie burgers) keep low-calorie/sodium canned f/v’s in your office keep water bottle with you at all times keep whole grain snacks in your car & office (crackers, nuts, seeds) Adding things to your environment to yield other positive health choices: keep an extra pair of tennis or walking shoes under your desk to walk during breaks keep a stocked gym bag in your trunk (clean clothes, water bottle, shoes) carry a small journal with you at all time to track progress schedule yourself into your day, ie exercise from 2-2:30 pm Subtracting foods from your environment: do not keep your favorites on hand AT ALL, especially not in bulk (ie Ice cream, chips, cookies, nuts, bread) brown bag the cheeses (or any other goodie in the fridge) to “hide” it, out of sight, out of mind have a separate cupboard in the kitchen for your healthy options so that it won’t be necessary to move a tempting junkfood out of your way to reach the healthy option that you are reaching for if you love ice cream, go out for it & enjoy a scoop, do not bring any home. Plan for the calories, decide what you are going to have, exactly, how big or small it will be and all the details, BEFORE you go. Subtractive environmental control might include removing yourself: it is ok to decline an invitation to an event if you know that you will not maintain self-control or end up 5 lbs heavier Go to the event, but be sure to eat first. Have tea or water w/lemon & let your company know that you really wanted to be there but won’t be eating with them, “I’m not feeling well” socialize w/others just until the food arrives, then excuse yourself, return in 10 minutes, they’re done by then & ask for your plate to be removed (no one really notices) IN THE NEWSFloridas Star-banner is running a profile on Lynn Fischer called Eating Right”...it is important to set aside the fad diets and focus on eating to maximize nutrition.”

Fiber! #004 Why you need it, and where to get it. Proper fiber intake can promote better general health -Fiber supplements and bowel regularity -Improve your cholesterol -Blood sugar control -Reduce the risk of colon cancer? We think so anyway What is Fiber? -Listed on product labels -Include a variety of sources -Most experts suggest 25-35 grams of fiber per day -Most children only have 4 servings of fruit and veggies per WEEK! ---Sources of fiber for American kids -----Apple Sauce -----Fruit Cocktail from a can -----Pizza ---Check your food labels and keep track of your fiber intake, otherwise you're only guessing With fiber intake - Water becomes more important -Use good Environmental Control to get in 64 oz per day Work your fiber intake upwards slowly to allow your body to adjust Soluble vs Insoluble -If you really need to know this, do some research. More important is to get fiber from a variety of sources. Higher fiber foods -Tend to be higher in calories -Tend to be higher quality (nutritionally) -A preferred source of calories, this is why we make room in the calorie budget Try some legumes! Beans are very nutrient dense, so 1/2 a cup is serving -Michelle tells us about the Broccoli incident -Steve recommends 16oz bags of baby carrots -See if your kids will go for plain/raw carrots or apples, you might like them too Most fruits have 2 grams of fiber Most Veggies have 4 grams of fiber Check out the Nutrition Data search bar at the bottom of the page! Cooking foods does not change the fiber content, unless you remove the peel. (Apples) -Michelle chooses canned beans, rinse and ready-to-go Steve gets tons of different fruits and veggies and recommends experimenting with new foods and combinations Michelle recommends oatmeal for breakfast, plenty of fiber and really keeps your blood sugar stable leaving your full for a long time Low-carb diets can mean excluding fruits and veggies! Michelle is rather annoyed with this trend, you need fruits and veggies Try fresh fruits and veggies instead of relying on supplements, you might even like them. IN THE NEWS: -FDA makes needed changes in feed regulations for 2006 (ABC News) -Higher prices for fruit and veggies may mean less access for low income children (Forbes.com) Next show: Environmental Control - Promote positive decisions.
