Four film lovers revisit The Matrix (1999) for the first time in years. The action still holds up. The philosophical ideas still land. But the script? That's where things get complicated. We break down the Hong Kong cinema influences Hollywood never credited, the Dark City and Invisibles connections, what Keanu Reeves actually brings to Neo, and whether the Wachowskis wrote a cyberpunk masterpiece or got carried by everyone around them. Plus: our 10-point rating and the one scene that still divides the room. Ready to stop paying more than you have to?

Was The Matrix the first film to ask whether our reality is manufactured? No! There are huge parallels between Dark City and The Matrix, with both films using some of the same themes, visuals, and even sets. In this episode of Four Play, we dive into Dark City (1998): Alex Proyas' noir-drenched sci-fi cult classic that arrived one year before The Matrix and explored memory, identity, and control in ways that still feel unsettlingly modern. Is Dark City just a forgotten cyberpunk curiosity or is it one of the most important science fiction films of the 1990s? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Alex and Luke Talk Night City, Mainline Endings, and Never Having Dinner at Embers.Cyberpunk 2077, developed and published by CD Projekt Red, launched in December 2020 and has since completed one of the most dramatic redemption arcs in modern gaming. Set in the neon-drenched chaos of Night City, this open-world RPG blends cyberware upgrades, branching narratives, high-speed gunplay, and existential dread into one sprawling, synth-soaked package. Whether you came for Keanu Reeves, the hacking, or the moral ambiguity, this is a game that swings big and refuses to be subtle. At the time of recording, Cyberpunk 2077 holds a Metacritic score of 86 on PC and 87 on Xbox Series X. According to HowLongToBeat, the main story averages around 25 hours, with completionist runs easily stretching beyond 60+ hours depending on how deep you dive into side gigs and fixer drama. In true Low Five fashion: you can mainline it, but Night City really wants you to linger.Alex played on PC and rolled credits, seeing one of the game's endings through to completion. Luke played on Xbox Series X and is still roaming Night City — notably having never eaten at Embers. Together they unpack how the game feels post-redemption, where the writing shines, how the combat holds up, and whether the hype cycle ultimately helped or hurt the legacy. This episode is unofficially brought to you in part by fake patriotism for the Olympics.Audio Credits: “V” from Cyberpunk 2077 Original Soundtrack — composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz, P.T. On this week's episode, Gita and Luke welcome special guest Brendan Caldwell of the newly-launched website jank.cool, which is all about PC gaming. Brendan is quickly learning how owning a website can be both exciting (you're your own boss, no one else can tell you what to do or what to write about) and very scary (how even do websites work?). But if it gives you a place to publish your weird trauma about getting attacked by Australian magpies under the guise of reviewing video games, the rest of it is worth it. Then in video game land - aside from the usual layoffs updates, a horrifically normal thing - Luke gives us his impressions of Romeo Is A Dead Man, Gita's got strong feelings about the romance options in Cyberpunk 2077, Brendan's trolling his friends in co-op auto mechanic sim Car Service Together, and Overwatch is back in all of our lives (much to Luke's ire & dissociation). And in the Mailbag we'll reveal the ratio of dead-body cleanup requests to demo mixtapes we receive on behalf of other businesses also named Aftermath, and recruit other orphaned video game mascot characters to send to the Olympics.Credits- Hosts: Gita Jackson, Luke Plunkett, and special guest Brendan Caldwell- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Ultima IV. We talk about the boat, we talk about dungeons (a tiny bit), we deep dive into NPCs and consequences, we talk about the quests and how everything is in the world, and answer some listener email. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More of Ultima IV (Much more, in B's case) Issues covered: revisiting locations and finding new things, a game that does a lot with a little, everything existing in the world, getting to know the world, NPCs sharing sprites and being hard to remember, getting a ship and fighting your way on, broadside combat, dying to a waterspout, wanting to search the oceans, badly simulating tacking, riding a horse, being interrupted in any location, trying to replicate the tabletop experience, feeling like a "yes" game, whether what you do matters, can you be a thief, watering down a morality system, having a limited palette of options at any one time, layering frosting, taking out the friction and icky feeling, the niche audience of some RPGs, taking elements from older games and bringing them into modern games, asking questions of the player who is also the character, avoiding the uncanny valley, an aside into adventure mode, the horseshoe effect on NPCs, reaching the limits of what the human brain can contemplate, an aside into Dunbar's number, facing the same challenges, chunking chapters, feeling the anxiety of there being too much, coalescing your notes from time to time, the telescope moment and seeing the map, the lack of loot, preparing to do things, validating your assumptions, having to revisit everywhere, the friction of Pikmin, getting good controllers, handheld mode, the Wavebird, bouncing off character creation, character creation we've liked, wanting a story to wrap around a more specific character, the generic hero, having fun with a character creator, a freeing character creator. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Final Fantasy (series), Gold Box (series), Eye of the Beholder, Outer Wilds, The Witcher (series), Beowulf, Dungeons & Dragons, Wizardry (series), BioWare, Mass Effect, BioShock, Dishonored, CD Project Red, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate III, Thief, Robin Hood, VtM Bloodlines, Undertale, Dark Souls, Land of the Lost, Dwarf Fortress, Planescape: Torment, Metroid / Castlevania, Richard Garriott, Sasha, Pikmin, Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto, Switch, PlayStation, Analog Pocket, Ashton Herrmann, Monkey Island, Wing Commander, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Bethesda Game Studios, Blizzard, World of Warcraft, Diablo (series), Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima, Saint's Row IV, Call of Cthulhu, Asher, Cuphead, KyleAndError, Hitman, FFSZilla, MGS: VR Missions, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.
