NOTES The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 1. PLAN your generosity. But generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their generosity. Isaiah 32:8 (NLT) 2. Trust God with the TITHE. A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. Leviticus 27:30 (NIV) Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Malachi 3:10 (NIV) 3. Start being generous TODAY. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Philemon 1:6 (NLT) Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. Luke 16:10 (NIV) BOTTOM LINE: It takes faith to give FIRST. It doesn't take faith to give what's LEFT. THE CHALLENGE: Take the tithing challenge.

Movement on the farm bill process took place in Washington, D.C. this week. Chad Smith has more on the progress farmers and ranchers have been waiting for. Smith: House Agriculture Committee Chair G.T. Thompson and Senate Ag Chair Debbie Stabenow released overviews of each committee's version of the new farm bill this week. Joe Gilson, director of government affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation, talked about each release. Gilson: Chairman Thompson released a five-page outline of his 2024 farm bill, and he also announced a House Agriculture Committee markup date of May 23. Moving to the Senate, Chairwoman Stabenow released a section by section of her farm bill, very substantial, clocking in at 94 pages. She has not indicated a date for a markup, but we're looking over both overviews that were sent out and trying to read through them and what it means for the farm bill. Smith: He says both documents provide valuable insight into what the next farm bill may include. Gilson: Both overviews make large investments in Title I. We also see from Chairman Thompson's bill will include provisions to prevent states from regulating animal welfare outside of their borders. In Chairwoman Stabenow's bill, it does make conservation programs permanent. One thing she also wants to do is impose a $700,000 adjusted gross income limit for commodity program payments. Smith: Gilson says this month will be critical in determining what's next in the process. Gilson: The May 23 markup from the House Ag Committee, depending on how that goes, will determine what happens in this Congress in terms of the Farm Bill. If we get a solid bipartisan vote out of that committee, I think, it can move to the House floor and really put pressure on the Senate. Smith: Learn more at fb.org/farmbill. Chad Smith, Washington.

Charles Conn is a builder, a creator and an environmentalist. He's managed to wed those three passions together by investing in the biotech space as the co-founder of Monograph Capital. “The most consistent thing you can do is work in this biology space because when humans have health security, they tend to look after the planet,” said Conn who has also been a member of the Patagonia board for 15 years, and chair for the last few. Patagonia recently transferred all its shares to The Patagonia Purpose Trust to fight climate change and species eradication. “That was an amazing journey and one that was also quite challenging,” said Conn. Conn recently released his second book, The Imperfectionist: Strategic Mindsets for Uncertain Times, a sister book to Bulletproof Problem Solving: The One Skill That Changes Everything. Listen in as Conn and Cohen discuss the idea that curiosity needs to be the founding point of strategy, and dynamic problem solving needs to be the key framework or mental model for developing strategy. “To creatively solve problems is maybe at the very heart of what it is to be a human,” said Conn. David Hoffman built and sold big-data and data analytics company Next Big Sound to Pandora in 2015. He's now building Beam, which helps people create shoppable mood boards for DTC brands. David reflects on his experience with mentorship and the long arc of the conversation that is being a co-founder and being in community. We unpack the Techstars motto "give first" and discuss the power of the Techstars community and the importance of community relationships in entrepreneurship. We talk through the complex evolution that is founding and scaling a startup, his experience doing just that with Next Big Sound, and the challenges of becoming a leader inside a growing company. One challenge is always scaling culture as a company scales, and David outlines some of the routines and structures that helped in defining his startup's culture. David also shares some insights on the post-startup-sale emotional roller coaster and the decision to build another company. Some of my other favorite insights from David: Living the “Give First” motto requires approaching everything with curiosity. “Grown ups” is a construct: When it is your idea and your company, you can make the decisions you need to make. Your Culture is made of your routines, whether it's Friday bagels or snap-clapping after people share wins. Your MVP product can be much, much more simple than you think if it creates value for your customers. David's nuanced reflections are a gift, and I'm so glad he sat down for this conversation. Sean Grundy, co-founder and CEO of Bevi, wouldn't budge despite calls from, ironically, David Cohen, the GiveFirst podcast host. Cohen wanted Bevi smart water coolers in more places than just Boston. Grundy wanted to prioritize quality control and customer retention. “We wanted our mechanical engineers and electrical engineers close by so they could personally put their eyes on any errors, see what was going wrong and fix it,” said Grundy. That was back in 2014 just after participating in Techstars Boston. Grundy's phased approach ethos worked then and still works today. In fact, Bevi not only survived the pandemic but recently raised $70 million in a series D funding round. “The pandemic was brutal,” said Sean Grundy. “It felt like running into a wall.”Listen in as Grundy and Cohen discuss taking a compassionate approach to crisis leadership, gradual recovery and redefining success … all with only a few liquid-related puns. In this episode, we dive deep into the various aspects of the Canadian economy, providing insights and analysis on recent developments. We discuss the unexpected rise in inflation in April, speculate on the Bank of Canada's next move, explore RBC's prediction of a housing market turnaround in spring 2023, analyze the Q1 population growth data, and examine the national housing market trends. We also touch on bond yields, business insolvencies, wage growth, and new home trends. Throughout the episode, we provide valuable insights and discuss the potential implications for individuals navigating the rapidly changing market.Inflation surprised us all as it unexpectedly rose, increasing by 0.1% to 4.4% in April. This marks the first increase since June 2022 and is mainly driven by higher shelter costs, including rents and mortgage interest costs. Dan suggests that the Bank of Canada is chasing its own tail in trying to beat inflation, as the interest cost within the CPI basket has increased by 30% year over year. The previous statements made by the Bank of Canada's Governor about inflation getting under control, now seem questionable again. The expectations of a rate hike in the next six months and the potential for hitting a 3% inflation rate in the coming months are proving less and less likely. We also take our focus to bond yields, which have risen to 3.3% from 2.87% in just two weeks. This increase is expected to push fixed rates up from the mid-4s to the high-4s, while still remaining lower than today's variable rates. The inverted yield curve, with a difference of 100 basis points, is a classic recession indicator that suggests the possibility of a recession, even if it takes until 2024. We also explore the topic of wage growth and we question whether it is necessarily a bad thing for Canadians considering the current cost of living. We reflect on the challenges faced by central bankers in aligning wage growth with the cost of living in a globalized economy. With larger global forces, such as fuel consumption, energy prices, global transport costs, and integrated supply chains are all driving inflation and affecting the average consumer through higher interest rates. We raise important questions about whether the right problem is being addressed and explore the future drivers of inflation, considering recent shifts towards protectionist perspectives and disruptions to the globalized economy.National housing market trends have changed course starting with an 11% jump in sales, the largest month-over-month gain since COVID lockdowns. We note that new listings are at 20-year lows for the fifth consecutive month, resulting in a sales-to-new-listings ratio of 70%, the highest since 2021 and higher than 2016. The shift from a buyer's market to a seller's market and the significant decline in inventory, which has dropped by 6% in just one month continue to compounded pressures in the market. We also explore regional variations, with Ontario experiencing a 10% drop in active listings over four months. This episode is packed with insights that we surely have you scratching your head - especially the net immigration growth projection of nearly 2 million new people coming to Canada! Tune in and catch the full story! _________________________________ Contact Us To Book Your Private Consultation:

Brad and David also talk about mental health in the startup community and how to stop the stigma, both broadly and in the entrepreneur space. Also, don't miss episode 20 of the Techstars Entrepreneur's Toolkit, which discusses mental health issues facing entrepreneurs.Follow David Cohen on Twitter @davidcohenFollow Brad Feld on Twitter @bfeldListen & subscribe to the Give First podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more. As you've seen, Season 3 is dedicated to my father, Mike Jacox, who passed away late in 2021. I Love and miss you, Dad.Today, we sit down with James Oliver Jr., an author, entrepreneur, and host of the HOT new podcast, Parents Making Profits, a part of the Hubspot Network.   James and his team were fortunate to speak with Damon John, who got them going!  I met James in 2020 when I was growing so much from a diversity perspective.  So much of my growth is from my friends at the Shift up team, and the man, Dale Favors! In my episode with James, we talked so much about his life journey that all started in Brooklyn.  James always has had a Give-First mindset which is now coming back to him in many ways with his success.  James shares a story about his aunt, who played a significant role in his life.  She would be the first black woman to be a manager in the typewriter division of IBM.  James is a single father who talks about the experience of raising twins, which he jokingly calls "twinado."    Later in the episode, we talk about the word GRIT, inspired by the excellent book written by Angela Duckworth. He shares a favorite quote by Mark Twain regarding purpose in life and the impact we will have on the world. James also shares how we, as fathers, must be aligned with our purpose.  He talks about his faith and how God plays a crucial role in everything he does.  To learn more about James, you can connect with him on LinkedIn or find him on Twitter.Catch Sitka Seafoods Use promo code TAKE15 at checkout for a 15% discount on the BEST FISH EVER!Established in 2006, Acme Homes WA One of the most value-based home builders in the state of Washington!
