Tom welcomes back Chris Irons, host of the Quoth The Raven podcast, to the show. A note of caution, Chris takes the gloves off in this episode so some swearing ensues. Chris is concerned that China is challenging the United States as a global superpower and they probably have more gold reserves than they publicly acknowledge. China's business approach tends to be sharper and more ruthless than the West. They have a long time horizon for planning and economic policy. It's not hard to imagine that China might eventually want to back their currency with something solid. Now with events in Ukraine, we see the unprecedented attempts to sanction Russia and other countries are taking notice. It looks like a separate economic system from the U.S. Petrodollar is an increasing possibility. We could be on the verge of the largest shift in monetary history. He discusses the movie "The China Hustle" and how it portrays some of the fraud with Chinese-based companies. The government continues to push for more control and encroaches more and more on rights. Once your rights are taken you're not getting them back. Governments need to evaluate the cost-benefit of their policies. Since the United States is a nation of gun owners that has to be taken into consideration but in many other countries firearms ownership is not an issue. Politicians, however, are allowed to be surrounded by men with guns. We're in the process of a giant reset and it seems unanimous that gold will back a new system in one form or another. Gold is going to be the commodity to hold because it brings you control and protection. At some point, we're going to see a mad dash for gold around the world. Governments are also going to want gold because that will give them power. Miners will eventually go into a mania phase and we won't see control in the gold markets. This will happen as the public realizes things are out of control. The risk of nationalization needs to be in your risk assessment. The world needs more resources but governments keep intervening in undesirable ways that exacerbate the problems. Lastly, Chris discusses his opinion on the problems in crypto and why the bottom probably is still coming. This week's Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher speaking first with Mark Minervini, author of several best-selling books, Trade Like a Stock Market Wizard and Think and Trade Like a Champion, among them, and then with Dan David, the founder of short-focused activist-research outfit, Wolfpack Research. Minervini is leading the pack this year in the U.S. Investing Championship in the $1+ money manager category with a whopping 262% gain. Though not a short seller by nature, at least some of Minervini's gains have come from his decision on September 13 to short the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY). What led Minervini to short the market and to remain short was his observation of the weakening technicals beneath the averages - among them, 80% of S&P 500 stocks down 10% or more, and just 38% of Nasdaq names above their 200-day moving averages. Minervini made news last week saying that the technicals of the market remind him of the situation prior to the 1987 crash. Those who extrapolate that statement to him predicting a crash, however, are missing the point. What he's trying to say is that conditions continue to favor a correction in stocks, so he's staying short. When the technicals improve, he'll cover and go long. Dan David is perhaps best known as a featured protagonist in 2018's, The China Hustle, a film that documented his work in uncovering fraud in China-based U.S. stock listings. At the root of The China Hustle is that it was legal in China to defraud foreign investors. That remains so today, says David, so bottom line: The financial statements of Chinese companies - from giants Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu (BIDU) all the way down to the smallest of small caps - cannot be trusted. And though David doesn't trade the Chinese megacaps, he assures that the regulatory crackdown on these players is for real. “Thou shall not be bigger than the state,” he reminds. It's all about control, says David, who isn't surprised by China's moves against Bitcoin. A government that doesn't allow its currency to float or guarantee basic freedoms can hardly be expected to sit aside while citizens keep their money off the books. And on Taiwan, David is certain that China will take over/invade at some point, and that the U.S. will be powerless to stop it. Whatever one thinks of Chairman Xi, says David, he's a man who does what he says he'll do … And he's said as much. Turning to active trades, David continues to be profitably short what he considers to be frauds like SGOCO Group (SGOC) and Moxian (MOXC), and a SPAC deal - Skillz (SKLZ) - where he believes the sponsors were too aggressive with their projected numbers. In recent days, U.S. investors have lost over $400 billion in funds invested, often without their knowledge, in non-transparent, unaccountable and ultimately unreliable companies tied to the Chinese Communist Party. This financial carnage prompted seven U.S. Senators to write the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission raising serious concerns about such exposure and the fact that foreign shareholders have no claim against the PRC corporations in which they are supposedly invested. Instead, they typically hold paper issued by so-called “Variable Interest Entities” typically based in the Cayman Islands and have no recourse if the Chinese government opts capriciously to sanction or regulate such firms.  If Americans can't be persuaded to avoid investing in CCP-tied companies because they often pose threats to our national security and/or our human rights values, maybe the prospect of losing their shirts will do the trick. This is Frank Gaffney.

Tamar Yonah interviews Joel Caplan, a private citizen and former investor who was defrauded in an investment business deal in China. Joel learned the hard way about the dangerous world of Chinese Stock Frauds. He responsibly invested in several green clean-tech companies, however, soon after, massive accounting fraud was discovered and exposed -not just in the companies he invested in, but in hundreds of companies operating in China. Companies that had obtained US listings and seemed to have been vetted. In reality though, these companies had fabricated their books in records in the CCCP. The discovery of these systemic and formulaic accounting frauds ultimately resulted to the delisting by NASDAQ and NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGES. He pursued justice in US Courts and obtained, what he called, “worthless Court Judgments”. Next up on the list of films to stream this holiday weekend is The China Hustle. The documentary begins amid the depths of the 2008 financial crisis, when we meet protagonist Dan David and a band of Wall Street outsiders. These detective-like investors operate on the fringes of the financial world, scouring global markets for money making opportunities. With the U.S. economy and markets in a tailspin, they turn to China, where there is what seems like a modern day gold rush. Chinese stock market indexes are doubling every year and the potential seems endless. There’s one problem, though: U.S. investors can’t participate because they are barred from investing directly in Chinese markets. But this is America, and people always find a way. A few Wall Street operators create a novel solution by bringing hundreds of promising Chinese companies directly to U.S. stock markets. All of the sudden, US investors can get in on the Chinese miracle, without leaving the comforting confines of the NYSE and the NASDAQ. It all seems to be going well, until detectives discover that most of the companies they’re investing in are frauds, producing phony balance sheets, claiming sham inventory levels and celebrating non-existent profits. The investors flip their strategy on its head and begin to master the art of short selling, essentially, betting that a company will fail. Have a money question? Email me here. This week, Abla picks Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, a sort of parallel documentary to the previously discussed The Vow, also about Keith Raniere and NXIVM but more explosive and revelatory and Egyptian horror series Paranormal. She mentions award-winning documentary Tell Spring Not to Come This Year available to watch online all this month here.    Coco Green talks about:  The China Hustle (2017) Like the 2016 documentary Betting on Zero, about short sellers and their suspicions of fraud in the multilevel marketing company Herbalife, The China Hustle has a similar focus, but with Chinese companies running a similar scam. It's believed that many of the reverse merger companies are overvaluing their companies by as much as 1000% to raise money in an IPO. After traders make their commission and companies get the cash, the value drops leaving any existing stockholders with worthless stock. And... Richard Wershe Jr. case White Boy Rick film (2018) White Boy (2017) documentary   Richard Wershe Jr. became an FBI informant at the age of 14—easy stuff like identifying dealers and drug houses in his Detroit neighbourhood.   His father, Richard Wershe Sr., was gun dealer and involved in the criminal world, so he negotiated the paid informant job on his behalf—rationalised it as they were targeting the more dangerous drug dealers   The case stands out because unlike the dirty cops, hired hitmen, and drug kingpins Wershe's testimony and narcing put away, at age 17 his drug dealing saw him receive a life sentence. Ultimately released in 2018 after serving more than 30 years, it's a story of black political power in Detroit. Rick Wershee Jr doesn't have the political, social or economic power to fight his charges—nor was he about to move his whiteness beyond symbolism to access the white neighbourhoods, schools, jobs, and wealth that would've allowed him to serve ‘white time' that he otherwise would've been entitled to.   —————— We discuss:  His House (2020) The film tells the story of a refugee couple from South Sudan settling into English life as they await a decision on their asylum application. Spoiler, to escape the genocide they kidnapped a child to make their way onto a bus that was ahead of soldiers carrying out atrocities. Then, in their journey across the Mediterranian, the boat overturned and the husband, Bol, let the child drown while saving his wife, Rial. They're now haunted by many things, but mostly their descent into brutality in an effort to save their own lives. The Social Dilemma (2019) A docu-fiction on the ills and dangers of social media, which includes talking heads from among the highest echelons of the tech community, many of which were at the helm of major social media networks and have since then left and are critical of the role it plays in disseminating false news, polarising opinion and disintegrating social relations.  ————— Sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of the homepage.  Comments & feedback at:   @mydylarama on Twitter & Facebook

The new documentary film The China Hustle begins amid the depths of the 2008 financial crisis, when we meet protagonist Dan David and a band of Wall Street outsiders. MOVIE TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55892jT06aI It all seems to be going well, until detectives discover that most of the companies they’re investing in are frauds, producing phony balance sheets, claiming sham inventory levels and celebrating non-existent profits. The investors flip their strategy on its head and begin to master the art of short selling - essentially, betting that a company will fail. With the help of a team of Chinese researchers who risk their freedom to uncover the truth behind these fake companies, the investors discover the frauds and bet against them in the market. There are no good guys in this story. But there are a few people who are sick of a financial system built on lies. The China Hustle follows their story through Wall Street, China and your retirement savings to uncover the biggest heist you’ve never heard of, and to challenge all of us to wake up and demand accountability and transparency in our markets before it’s too late. “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment. There are no good guys in this story, including me. – Dan David, GeoInvesting After the 2008 financial collapse, U.S. investors began scouring global markets for new opportunities for high returns, and they turned to China to take part in its explosive economic growth. Looking beyond profits that seemed too good to be true, a band of rogue Wall Street outsiders uncovered a massive web of multibillion-dollar fraud. From the producers of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, The China Hustle takes a deep dive into China's economic miracle to reveal how many ordinary Americans who want to invest in China's dynamic growth—through pension funds, retirement savings, and mutual funds—are unaware they could be holding billions of dollars of junk. Academy-Award® nominee Jed Rothstein follows Dan David and a group of whistleblower investors who go to China to discover a landscape ripe for fraud. Working with Chinese investigators who put their freedom at stake, they expose hundreds of small Chinese companies that have vastly overvalued their assets, revenues, and and future prospects—representing 1.1 trillion dollars in market value on the NYSE and NASDAQ—and the American companies willing to turn a blind eye while they rake in huge profits.
