When the fervour of professional Rugby Union fades into the quiet intensity of fatherhood, a man's search for identity takes on a whole new playing field. Join me and my guest, Austin Smith, as we explore the profound shifts in life that come with trading stadiums for the living room and legacy for lullabies. Austin, a former professional athlete turned exercise physiologist, opens up about the personal challenges he faced in the pursuit of inner  fulfilment, sharing insights that resonate with anyone who has ever grappled with the weight of external expectations.I originally asked Austin to be a guest on the show so I could tap into his exercise physiology expertise; injury re-hab, diet, and all things health and wellbeing to support skateboarding endeavours. However, instead, our dialogue traverses the diverse landscape of relationships and personal development, where Austin and I exchange tales of romance, the trials of parenting, and the quest for purpose beyond the scoreboard. This episode is a testament to the power that candid, supportive conversations can have in steering us toward our better selves. As we wrap up our time together, Austin and I reflect on the broader implications of our journeys, from the philosophical quandaries of parenting in modern society to the ethical conundrums posed by advancing technology. The future is complex and often daunting, but it's the community and the support we offer each other that lightens the load. Tune in for an episode that goes beyond the surface, inspiring you to embrace the challenge, confront the unknown, and appreciate the intricate dance of life's pursuits.THT gets by with a little help from these friends... (Intro) Music by Def Wish Cast.Song: ForeverAlbum: The Evolution Machinewww.defwishcast.com.auhttps://defwishcastofficial.bandcamp.com/INDOSOLE - Sustainable footwear Code: THT(15% discount shipping is WORLDWIDE and fast).Sandals made from recycled Tyres. When I sat down with Kane Horsepool, the artist  also known as Trait, we didn't just talk art; we ventured into the depths of personal growth, the struggle for authenticity, and the profound effects of integrating one's deepest values with creative pursuits. Kane's candid reflections on mental health, his commitment to being a present husband and father, and his artistic process offer a stark view into the life of someone balancing the rigors of full-time work with an unquenchable need to create. His upcoming show at the Bad News Gallery in Wollongong promises to  be a true manifestation of an artist who is letting go…so they can grow. We reminisce about formative influences, the sustenance we draw from passions like skateboarding, and the importance of local culture and grassroots environmental efforts. There's links to the emotional growth that comes from confronting challenges head-on, and the unapologetic truth that one's well-being is paramount to creative success. Kane shines a light on the transformative power of art in all its forms. So join us for a conversation that's as much about the art on the canvas as it is about the art of living a mindful, purposeful life.Enjoy,ShanTHT gets by with a little help from these friends... (Intro) Music by Def Wish Cast.Song: ForeverAlbum: The Evolution Machinewww.defwishcast.com.auhttps://defwishcastofficial.bandcamp.com/INDOSOLE - Sustainable footwear Code: THT(15% discount shipping is WORLDWIDE and fast).Sandals made from recycled Tyres. #192 - Sidney Tapia: "I'm just living the Go0d life"

This week I speak with former professional skateboarder, exceptional artist, husband and father, Mr Sidney Tapia. Sid joins me live from his Art Gallery in Brisbane, Australia, to take us on a deep, authentic, and often raw journey, through his life so far.  Sid reflects on his tumultuous childhood and teens years, the challenges of being a child of migrant parents who divorced when he was 3 years of age, finding art as his place of solace, navigating a liveable income as a sponsored skateboarder in the 90s, being contracted to draw murals for sports organisations such as the NRL and the UFC,  his innate desire to be of service to others, finding his faith in God, and much much more.Despite Sid's rich history in Skateboarding, we don't really talk much about it in this episode. I assume this will be disappointing to some, however, his charismatic tales of redemption, hope and love, are much more engaging and enriching in my opinion. He analyses the human condition we all endure with vigour. He strips back the layers, sifts through the shit, and comes out clean on the other side...Just for today anyway.   I love this episode. The three of us have an open conversation about mental health, it's inevitable fluctuations, trauma, and beyond. Melissa shares elements of her personal story which is brave and appreciated. This week I catch-up with one of my personal favourite Australian Skateboarders, Mr Darren Kaehne. Darren and I have a relaxed, yet long conversation, at his house in Mona Vale on the Northern Beaches of Sydney Australia. Darren shares about his early years growing-up, finding a sincere passion for Skateboarding, meeting his wife, starting a family, and everything in between. We reflect a lot on the Australian skate scene in the 90s which was fun, but mainly we philosophise, and go off on a variety of random tangents. It was an enjoyable blur of a conversation. I loved it.Some might say Darren is a gifted Skateboarder (which I agree with), however, he is also someone who has literally never stopped. He's been doing it for 35 years (plus). Never one to chase the spotlight, never one to expect anything from it, just pure love, and when you watch him skate, this is abundantly clear. There is an endearing sensitivity to Darren that I really liked. He attributes a healthy lifestyle, gratitude, presence, and non-attachment to the past, as values that have allowed him the longevity that he now enjoys with his skateboarding. At 47 years of age he is still ripping. Be sure to check-out the edit I put together of our post-podcast skate. Darren literally stacked about 3 minutes worth of quality footage in the space of a couple of hours at Mona Vale Skatepark...You'll be inspired.Enjoy,ShanConnect with Terrible Happy Talks online:Website: https://terriblehappytalks.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/terriblehappytalks/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TerriblehappyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/terriblehappytalksFriends of THTUse Code: THTKRUSH ORGANICS - CBD oils and topicalsCode: THT(Get a HUGE 40% Discount...shipping is WORLDWIDE and fast).Purveyors of the finest CBD oils and topicals. Jeffery Olsen and his son Spencer, are Near Death Experience survivors of a car accident that took the lives of Jeffery's first wife, and Spencer's mother, Tamara and Jeffery's son (Spencer's brother), Griffin. To add to the trauma of the event, Jeffery's leg was amputated in the process, he broke his back, endured eighteen surgeries, and five months in an Intensive Care Unit. In this week's episode, Jeffery and Spencer share the details of their lives prior and post accident, their ongoing navigation of grief, loss and acceptance, their journey of hope, enlightenment, and the healing gift that is Jeffery's second wife, Tonya and the children they now have together. There is a trigger warning for this episode, as Jeffery and Spencer courageously recount the day of the accident in explicit detail, and their comparative experience with it. Compellingly, Jeffery discusses the subsequent Out-of-Body Experience he had in the immediate moments post accident, an experience he describes as profoundly vivid, in which he was able to converse with his deceased wife, as they floated in a ball of light. Her instruction to him in that moment was simple and clear: "You need to go back and raise our son so he is not orphaned".The event that Jeffery and Spencer endured on that day was tragic. However, it is overpowered by hope and love. Twenty six years later, you will see two humans that are enriched, at peace, and in their own words, "refusing to be victims". Jarrett Wilbraham is a professional MMA fighter and past guest. This week he joins me remotely to check in, discuss his recent title fight in Melbourne, and in true Jarrett fashion, we get deep into his ongoing healing journey. Despite being an absolute savage in the Octagon, Jarrett is a deeply sensitive, and empathetic human who attributes much of his healing journey to his conscious use of psychedelics, supporting family and friends and training at an elite level. The conversation goes on a variety of tangents, we talk about:His wild fight down in Melbourne as parts of the HEXS promotion. A fight that he dominated, yet lost due to error. The losing mindset, learning from defeat and growing from it.The role of psychedelics on healing his trauma, and being better for those around him.Being part of Alex Volkanovski's UFC284 training camp. His financial concerns, making a living from fighting in order to provide and start a family of his own.And there is much more to the conversation, you'll have to tune-in and enjoy the ride. We record remotely, and yes there was some sound quality issues which Jarrett and I were able to rectify. Jeremy Rowling is a skateboarder, photographer, dedicated family-man, and a lifelong friend. It's an important episode for me. As a teenager, Jeremy was that person I looked-up to the most. He was a few years older, a few years cooler, confident, kind, funny, and the catalyst that held the crew together. Enamoured with skateboarding, and as the the oldest...he had a job. This meant that he was able to buy the latest skate videos when they came out, in which we would spend countless hours watching, studying, learning, mimicking, and developing our sense of identity as individuals, and also as a collective crew, in the process. In this week's episode Jeremy discusses his childhood growing up in semi-rural NSW, finding skateboarding, his family's move to the south coast, that time he knocked his tooth out learning how to ollie, finding a magical crew, that time Julian shot me with a slug-gun, skateboarding in a time without skateparks, legendary Nowra spots, influences, falling in love with his now wife, becoming a father, why radness begets radness,  and much much more. We could've talked for days reminiscing...Straight-up golden years of skating, partying, hanging with friends and no responsibility. Mainly good times, sometimes awkward, sometimes painful,  either way, it seems like most of us reflect on our teen years with great reverence. So listen, compare, and reflect on your own experience with this stage of life, and ask yourself who your Jeremy Rowling was.Enjoy,Shan Support the show and become a subscriber. Not only that – the process provides dignified work for many in Indonesia. For a decade now Indosole has strived to be the environmental keepers of the future. They have successfully merged artisan skill with social impact, developing a custom shoemaking process that transforms tires to shoe soles by hand.Through this crafted concept and forward thinking, Indosole has been able to save over 100K+ tires from landfills, but to have a mass scale environmental impact a breakthrough technology was needed.Powered by: ReFi Jobs - ReFi jobs curates the best new regenerative finance jobs at leading companies and startups - Learn more---> Check out the Causeartist Partners here.---> Subscribe to the Causeartist Newsletter here.Listen to more Causeartist podcast shows hereFollow Grant on Twitter and LinkedInFollow Causeartist on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram

Today we're learning from Kai Paul, Head of Manufacturing and Sustainability at Indosole based in Bali. Indosole is a B Corp certified vegan footwear company that uses 100% recycled tires for it's soles. An idea that came about after Indosole's Founder, Kyle Parsons, purchased a pair of hand-crafted sandals made from motorbike tires during his first trip to the Indonesian island.  They've since scaled up and streamlined the process, collecting tire waste, pulverising it into a powder, and pressing it into new soles with soul, as they like to say. He talks about their company journey, the challenges of using recycled material, and what's next for Indosole. Use Promo Code "Coldharbour" to enjoy 10% off your next Indosole purchase. Deb Young is a wife, mother, self-confessed yoga nerd, a trained Doula with a passion for helping women during pregnancy, entrepreneur, global traveler, food-lover and co-founder of the long-established Younga Yoga studio on the South East Coast of Australia. Basically, she is a charismatic leader who inspires those that have the privilege of being in her presence. Deb has a Degree in Physical & Health Education and a background in dance, but it wasn't until she met (her now husband) Russ that she discovered her love for all things Yoga and the amazing way it can help bring balance to life.Deb has a unique ability to bring Yoga philosophy to life on the yoga mat with dynamic & clear sequencing by drawing metaphors between what we practice ON the Yoga mat as a symbol for what we do in our everyday life OFF the Yoga mat. When I first practised with Deb and Russ in their tiny studio (in what seemed like a previously used office space), I immediately sensed the passion and desire for sharing their knowledge, building a community, serving others and effectively creating a collective consciousness of Yogi inspired humans! Since those early days back in 2006, Younga Yoga has since moved to a larger studio, inspired a larger audience and stayed true to their core values, whilst growing a sustainable business. In this week's episode, Deb is with me to share her journey, experiences, challenges and hopes for the future. Recently Francis and his team of SOAP student representatives flew to Hawaii, funded by Parley for the Oceans to attend a youth summit on ocean conservation strategies, activism and raising awareness. One of the many steps in the journey towards saving our planet’s most important resource. The ocean. Francis is with me on this week’s episode to discuss his journey, challenges and hopes for the future. In episode 115, Kestrel welcomes Tomide Awe, the founder of Olori, to the show. A handbag line that incorporates traditional African textiles into modern designs, Olori was built with an intention to help women become actively involved in solving women-interest issues, especially with regard to education.  "It's not about just donating money - we are not a charity organization, this is not a charitable affair for us. We are on a mission to build this network of future empowered women, and we wanted to ensure that the girls feel the full effect of every dollar that we spend."  -Tomide Awe, Founder of Olori   In this episode, Tomide shares more about her journey, and how growing up in Nigeria helped her realize the impact an education can have on women's lives. According to UNESCO, a girl in Nigeria has a 73% chance of not going to school. For Tomide, her mom helped to ensure she was able to get an education, and now she has multiple degrees. She wants to pay that forward to help give other young girls the opportunity to learn, grow and build their own future. With each Olori bag purchased, a girl receives one month of education, in coordination with Olori's giving partner Bridge International Academies. One powerful element of Tomide's company is she's not just a charity and/or a business with a giving model. Instead, she has built a supply chain that supports women throughout the backstory of her products as well. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: Wharton, university where Tomide studied and received her Master's degree "Nigeria is a country where a girl has a 73% chance of not going to school at all, according to UNESCO" "About 9.5 million girls will never step foot in a school, compared to about 5 million boys [in Africa]." "UNICEF says that mothers that have had some education are more than twice as likely to send their own children to school." Bridge International Academies, Olori's nonprofit giving partner Olori actually means "queen" in Tomide's language - the Yuruba language of Nigeria Aso-oke: textiles used to make Olori's bags "We strongly believe that when women support women, incredible things happen." In episode 113, Kestrel welcomes Lawrence Lenihan, the CEO of Resonance, to the show. A venture operating company, Resonance partners with brands to enable them to build a fashion business that is as beautiful as their creative vision. "WHAT WE'RE DOING IS WE'RE RETHINKING. THIS WHOLE INDUSTRY WAS BUILT ON THE IDEA THAT YOU MAKE MANY - LOTS AND LOTS - BIG RUNS ... WE'RE ACTUALLY GOING COMPLETELY THE OPPOSITE. RATHER THAN HAVING FEWER STYLES OVER MORE AND MORE UNITS, OUR WHOLE ARCHITECTURE IS: HOW DO WE MAKE ONE UNIT AS EFFICIENTLY AS A THOUSAND?"  -LAWRENCE LENIHAN, FOUNDER OF RESONANCE  In this episode, Kestrel asks Lawrence to talk more about how Resonance intends to fuse the worlds of art and commerce, when so often they tend to resist each other. For Resonance, it's about bringing business and art together, but allowing art to be the driving force. Lawrence shares more about how fast Resonance can move their brand partners' designs from inception to customer doorstep - in less than nine days. Kestrel and Lawrence explore whether this new infrastructure Resonance is building is "speeding things up" or just shifting the model to allow the designer to have more control. Additionally, Kestrel asks Lawrence to elaborate more on this idea that "creation is discontinuity," which is a foundational element of Resonance's approach.  The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: Resonance's Art vs Commerce Video "We have sold 20,000 units with 2,000 different styles."  "The interesting thing about fashion is that it is the thing that is touching you physically, and it represents where you are, where you think you stand, where you belong. And, that expression of "where I belong" is a current expression of conditions in the environment in which I live, and that's why i think this is a really, really critical thing." Plausible deniability: "the ability of people (typically senior officials in a formal or informal chain of command) to deny knowledge of or responsibility for any damnable actions committed by others in an organizational hierarchy because of a lack of evidence that can confirm their participation, even if they were personally involved in or at least willfully ignorant of the actions" GIVEAWAY ALERT Conscious Chatter has partnered with IndieGetup for a Conscious Closet Giveaway! Your Path will Emerge   Introducing Kyle Parsons Looking toward the future, the paths our life takes doesn't necessarily seem to be interconnected.  However, with the right attitude and openness to new experience we can often look backward and see how our completely unrelated experiences have been linked to a present outcome.  Call it serendipity, fate, happenstance, or destiny, we often find that indirect roads from point A to point B seem to come about  This is just like the story of Kyle Parsons and his company Indosole.  This San Franciscan had previously interned at New Balance shoe company, worked in surf shops managing the sandals section, and had spent time working at a recycling plant in the east coast.  Somewhat unrelated right?  However, Kyle's disjointed experiences seemed to gel during a family surf trip to Bali back in 2004 when he was on the hunt for a fresh pair of sandals.  Coming upon a local market, Kyle saw a really cool pair that was made by local artisans.  The unique thing about these sandals was that the bottoms were made from recycled motorcycle tires.  They weren't the most comfortable, but they were stylish and cool, and upon further research Kyle found out that tire waste was a huge problem in Indonesia.  His past experiences and a chance meeting got the gears grinding in his mind and he returned to Bali in 2006 with the plan to start his own footwear company that would aid the environment, help out the people of Indonesia, and make him some money.  Kyle has since grown his B-Corp from receiving suitcase loads of footwear to container loads and has the goal to repurpose a million tires and keep them from adding to landfills.  Check out this episode of Boiling Point to be inspired by the positive impacts you can make using your past experiences and the right attitude.   In this episode Kyle tells us the story of Indosole and how he never saw himself previously as the head of footwear business. He goes on to tell us about the growth of the company and how a suitcase of sandals being imported is has become container loads. Kyle explains how tires are not the only thing he repurposes for his shoes and his commitment to the Indonesian community. He explains how he got the financing to start the project while working as an on-the-road sales rep. Kyle also tells us how he gets around needing the celebrity endorsement that many footwear companies rely on and how this idea helps to foster community. He also tells us about an incredible opportunity to intern for Indosole in Bali.  Surfs up! Greg is inspired by Kyle's journey and asks how many challenges are right on our doorstep that we could turn into mission based businesses if you let “the rubber hit the road” and have “lots of sole”. Greg and Dave both note how seemingly unrelated events can turn into something so big. Greg recalls how chance encounters ignited his passion and got him partially to where he is today.   Links - The Indosole Website - Indosole's Good Humans - Music from Indosole Good Human Dustin Thomas - Indosole Retail Locator - Indosole on Facebook - Indosole on Instagram - Indosole on Twitter   Learn more about your ad choices.
